After installing windows 10 build, I see a boot selection menu each time I reboot your PC. When I get to this screen, if I do nothing it will automatically boot to the Windows 10 Technical Preview within 30 seconds by default. Why is it happening.
View 14 RepliesRecently I've installed Windows 10 on a Dell Inspiron 17. It had had a preinstalled Ubuntu. When installing Windows, I deleted the Ubuntu partition, leaving only the one for system recovery and the one called DIAGS, I think.
Now everytime the system is loading, for a split second I get the Windows Boot Menu screen that's cut from the top. See : [URL] ....
After that, the system loads just fine. What is it and how do I get rid of it?
I'm using WIn 8.1 as my main OS, but I have the 10 Home preview (Build 10240) on a second hard drive and I'm dual-booting. But there's something strange happening:
- If i set WIndows 10 as the default OS, then the PC boots to the OS selection screen and gives me 30 seconds to pick which one I want to use
- But if I set 8.1 as the default, it boots directly into 8.1 and doesn't let me select the 10 preview.
I'd prefer to have 8.1 as the default, but I don't want to go into BIOS every time I want to switch between them.
Just want to check something, I am running 8.1 and 10 in dual boot, but when the time comes to running 10 on it's own how do I get rid of the OS boot selection option at start up?
I know that MSCONFIG has options but it will not allow me to set the timeout less than 3 seconds.
What about the start up and recovery option in the advanced tab in system settings? Would this get rid of the selection screen?
I've got a slideshow of images set as my desktop background, and under the Personalization settings for Colors I have the three settings "Automatically pick an accent color", "Show color on Start, taskbar, and action center" and "Make start, taskbar, and action center" all switched to On.
The problem is the accent color selection does not automatically refresh when the slideshow rolls to the next image. I have to either send the computer to sleep and wake it up, or toggle the "Automatically pick an accent color" slider in order to get it to refresh. Needless to say this is pretty impractical and I end up just sitting through the whole day with an accent color that only matches the first image of the slideshow.
It looks like the super-thin window border telling you which window has focus is still updating color correctly, but nothing else, anywhere, does at all.
Win10 Laptop, upgrade from Win7.
Every time I fire up my laptop without exception I cannot connect to the internet via WiFi.
Power settings are High Performance and the operating system doesn't switch off anything to save power. I never hibernate or allow sleep. It's either on or off.
The device and its drivers appear to be good, a list of nearby networks are displayed for me to connect to. On attempting to manually connect I get a message "Cannot Connect at this time"
If I then reboot the laptop it successfully connects to my WiFi network automatically without delay or errors and continues to maintain a connection.
When I shutdown the laptop I have the same problem when it is started, I have to restart it.
This same problem occurs with three different wireless networks I have access to.
Switching off the wireless adapter and back on again doesn't work. Switching off the router and back on again doesn't work, I have to reboot the laptop every time.
On all three routers the routers give the laptop a static IP address. The routers give me a different IP address though.
After installing a 32 bit windows 10 from a USB by mistake I decided to upgrade to the 64 bit version. I have 3 hard drives, one of which is an ssd that I am trying to install the OS to. After downloading and setting up the media creation tool and creating a USB I restarted and boot form USB.
I followed the steps and deleted the existing windows 10 partitions on my dad and tried installing straight to the unallocated space. After the installation completed it restarted the installer, which is not what happened when I previously successfully install windows 10. I then changed the boit order to have my ssd first and rebooted, which gave me the Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media error.
Confused I loaded up the installed and there were correctly partitioned installs already on the ssd ( although one partition looked a little small). I tried reinstalling windows 10 with the same result over and over.

I was on 8.1 but did a clean install following the guides on the forums and it worked great. Only issue I had was with the Synaptics settings that keeps resseting after reboot but sorted that out.
Now for some reason 90% of the time my laptop goes to sleep I can only get it to work again by rebooting via power button. I have tried various guides on the forum (disabled fast boot, hybernation, etc) but nothing seems to work. If it does work, it only last a couple of hours at best. I have also noticed that the laptop does not always shut down fully...
I have just done a reset again (did a clean install yesterday) and left the laptop on for about 30-45 minutes and it goes to sleep and I can't wake it. I left everything default to rule out any possible changes I could have made to the settings.I am wondering if it's the iso I got from Microsoft website when I did the install...
The computer goes to sleep after a period of inactivity, when mouse or keyboard is used the tower starts up but the monitor won't. I've gone into Device Manager and made sure mouse and keyboard will wake machine, but alas, no monitor. Must reboot every time.

View 1 RepliesI upgraded to Windows 10 everything seems to run fine but system will not restart from the restart selection on the start menu. Windows update will not reboot automatically either. System looks like it is going to reboot, everything shuts down but as system trys to restart everything freezes. Only way around it is to do a hard shutdown by holding the power button. Updated graphics card,hard drive and bios but still no luck.
View 1 Repliesyesterday I opened Windows 7 iso file in my Windows 10 operating system, and pressed 'Install now', I immediatly cancel the operation, and a new partition showed up next to C: drive, I knew nothing about system partition yesterday and I though Windows 7 installation reserved it, so I erased the 2 folders that had inside (EFI and Boot). But the partition still existed, so I restarted the PC and now shows: "Reboot and select proper boot device" (Windows 10 no longer boots).
I tried to fix it with Windows 10 USB iso's troubleshoot and everything failed, so I tried using the Command prompt tool but couldn't do much with it.
I try and go into the bios to change the order of the boot devices but my keyboard start to turn on with flashing leds like normal then just turns off.
View 1 RepliesI occasionally (but frequently enough that it is noticeable) get an unresponsive start menu. When this happens Win+P for display switching also does not work. The start menu starts working after a reboot and only after a reboot. Obviously this gets annoying because of all the windows I have to reopen.What I've tried when the start menu stops working:
1. sfc /scannow - this doesn't show any errors
2. Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"} - the process finishes but the start menu doesn't start working anyway
I really hate restarting the PC when this happens.
On Dec 14th a W10 updated (critical update) was implemented.
On Dec 15th I received a "Critical Update. Your Start Menu is not working .... etc. We'll try and fix at next reboot"
I've been on various forums, reloaded in "Safe Mode", etc but the problem still exists.
When turning on my computer today, I had to face a BSOD with the error name being "System Thread Exception not Handled", which prevented me from launching Windows 10 in either way. So I rebooted my computer on my Linux Mint partition in order to look on the internet the solution to this error. I then created a USB bootable with Windows 10, so I can access to the troubleshoot kits. However, when I launched my computer again on my USB key, I found myself in front of a black screen with words saying "Reboot and select proper boot device".
Things get quite weird from now, because when I try to boot from my SSD where Windows 10 is installed, I no more have the previous BSOD, but always and always this black screen with the same message. I do not know how to do now in order to access to Windows 10 again.
Unfortunately, being unable to access to Windows 10, I can't give you a DM Log Collector.
Downloaded Windows 10 and started installing it. The install got to around 20% and now I'm stuck on a black screen with "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key". I have gone into BIOS and changed boot order around but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
View 1 RepliesI can not provide a crash log or a screen shot because I can not get past the Repair/Diagnose loop.
My Windows 10 pro has been running just fine until yesterday when I did an update. After the update and reboot, I get stuck in a loop stating the system cant start because of "Inaccessible boot device". It goes thru a process of restarting itself and self diagnostics and repair, but it keeps looping without fixing itself. I do get to select options such as boot up in safe mode but it wont, it goes back in that loop. I can boot into the Bios, I have an SSD that has always been set to ACHI mode, and it is. I just cant get out of this loop?
The only fortunate thing is that I have backup image files, so I do a quick secure erase of the SSD and reload the image fresh. All goes well until I do the Windows update, then reboot into this problem. I disabled Updates for the moment and spent a lot of hours on Google and YouTube, nothing I found so far has worked, so I figured I would try a fresh start here.
I am getting that error at splash screen after failed dual boot install of Debian. It was on the same drive, but I do not have another PC to get a boot repair or any other tool. I could go to a friend as last resort. Tried setting bios, still doesn't work.

View 1 RepliesThis is on a custom-built machine upgraded from 8.1 Pro to 10 Pro. See screenshot. Left my computer idle for a while. Came back to that on the start screen. This also happened last night under the same seemingly random conditions. Unsure of what caused it, but logging out and back in made the icons reappear. While they were invisible, they were still clickable and functional.
View 2 RepliesMy custom-built pc all of a sudden won't boot in to windows. i get the error message "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key", and i have made sure that my hdd is my first boot option. i want to reinstall windows now because that seems like the only way out, but i cant because i have no recovery usb or disc. what can i do to boot to this harddrive, that my bios detects just fine.

View 4 Replies10 doesn't seem to be booting very nicely. What I mean is that it seems to be having a difficult time initilizing my SSD, so upon boot I get a blank black screen for anywhere from 60-180 seconds, where the primary drive activity LED is inactive, before it actually boots. This could be problematic, because I need it to both boot and shut down very quickly since I use my laptop for class; no sleep mode, either, because my system is old and batteries no longer work with my mobo.

It can take more than 5 minutes, even though the boot drive is a 250GB Crucial MX200 with the latest firmware. I know that this is a very vague issue, but if i should provide more info for you, let me know.
My motherboard is an Asus Q87M-E btw.
