Boot To White Screen With Black Squares Flashing
Oct 13, 2015
Recently I've started to encounter an error when booting my computer, occasionally it would boot to a weird flashing white and black screen. An example of this can be seen here: [URL]....
This occurs just before the login screen. While this happens, my cursor is still visible, though larger than normal. After a while, the flashing stops and the screen stays black, usually before this I would force restart my PC then it would boot fine.
General specs:
GPU: Asus gtx 980 strix
CPU: i5 4690k
Motherboard: Gigabyte Gaming 7
Ram: G.Skill Trident 2x8gb
PSU: Thermaltake Gold 650watt

This is weird. I rebooted and the windows logo showed up but then it went to a flashing black and white screen. I rebooted a few times and the same thing.
Then I tried F8 while booting (thinking that would get me to safe mode) and it booted fine. BUT, it didn't look like it went to safe mode (not sure if it is obvious in Win10 since I haven't booted to safe mode yet). I rebooted a few more times and all OK.

PC froze and wouldn't ctrl-alt-del, so I turned it off from the power supply, and when I turned it back on, I get a black screen with flashing cursor just after the BIOS splash and just before the Windows symbol would normally appear. I've used a recovery usb - refresh, automatic repair, and system restore do not work, and I can't continue booting with the usb, can't get to safe mode.
I had a spare SSD, so installed 8.1 on it and used it to boot the PC, then attached the drive that wouldn't boot as a secondary drive. All of my files/programs appear to be there on the faulty drive, but for whatever reason the Windows 10 installed on it will not boot.
I'm sure the easiest option would be to wipe the trouble drive and reinstall Windows, but there are several work programs that would be a pain to go back and reinstall (would have to call in the vendor). Since the drive itself seems to be working, could I create a new partition and reinstall Windows to it, then uninstall the corrupted version?

My PC has been acting up for about a week now. I have 2 Samsung 24inch Monitors and a decent gaming PC. I have tried all the options this forums has brought to me such as control alt delete and recovery mode, nothing has worked so far. I have just upgraded from 7-10 and it just wont start up without booting to that black screen.

So i don't know what happened to my computer last night (Maybe it did an automatic update) I did a normal shutdown, and in the morning after I couldn't boot my Windows 10. It won't go pass the black screen with the blinking dash. I don't want to do a fresh install. I got all my important files in this computer.

I installed windows 10 from 8.1 on my Vision E2 Gateway. When I sign in, the desktop keeps flashing a black screen every second. It doesn't allow me to open anything, I can't click on any icons visible, and this has been happening ever since I first signed in with windows 10. Is it a virus or something? It can't be that my computer isn't compatible, because it TOLD me it WAS.

I've done a clean install of Win 10. Games that work perfectly on Win 7 64 bit are crashing consistently on Win 10 Pro 64 bit. I was a system builder for 15 years, but I don't know much about Win 10, and am no expert on advanced trouble shooting.
It only crashes in games. I only play driving games/simulators (Project Cars, Driver SF, Burnout Paradise, and several Need for Speed games). It crashes on every one of them. When it crashes, it's 5-10 mins into game, crashes to white or black screen with no sound. The system does not reboot (even when set to reboot on errors). It simply hangs with a white or black screen and no sound. Keyboard strokes no longer work either.
The only thing showing in event viewer is error 41 kernel power (63), which is obviously when I'm manually restarting by holding power or reset buttons.
System is not overclocked other than I like to run my video card fans at 70% with MSI Afterburner (crashed before and after I installed Afterburner)
System is dust free and has good air flow.
I've got several monitoring devices, doesn't appear to be a heat issue with CPU (55C-60C at crash) and video card (57-58C at crash)
Ran MemTest over night, no errors
Ran Prime95 over night, no errors
Ran Heaven Benchmark overnight, no errors
Ran Seatools long test on all hard drives, no errors
Have latest MB drivers and BIOS
Page file is set to physical memory x1.5 and resides on C: with OS.
I've tried complete memory dump, small memory dump, and automatic memory dump - all set to overwrite existing - it never saves a dmp file Ctrl/Alt/Del does nothing
I've gone from a Belkin surge protector and straight to the wall power - no difference.
Tried many different drivers for my video card. I completely remove with DDU in safe mode before installing different ones. Older (14.9, 14.8, 14.12, 13.9, and 13.12) drivers do not stop fans and vary between black and white screens at crash - but the latest Crimson (15.201, 15.3, and 16.1.1 Beta) drivers stop the fans during crash like the PCI-E slot has stopped working completely (this seems to be the key to the problem, but I'm lost as to what it might be) .
System specs:
MB: GA-H97-HD3
CPU: Intel i5 4690 (stock cooler)
Memory: 2x 4GB GSkill F3-12800CL8
Graphics: AMD Radeon 7850 OC (300MHz/1200MHz) (onboard Intel controller disabled and drivers uninstalled)
HDDs: Corsair 256GB SSD with OS (141GB free space), 3x 2TB WD Red for storage (all with at least 40% free space)
PSU: Seasonic 520w M1211 Bronze
I have a backup image of Win 7, and everything still works correctly on it. If not for that, I'd think it was the MB PCI-E slot. That, and the tests on hardware seem to imply that it's not a hardware problem.

I have downloaded and successful installed Windows 10 on one of my two computers. When I downloaded to second computer it hung on the installation re-boot. Now machine will only display BIOS splash screen and then shows a black screen with a single fast flashing cursor.
I tried putting the original Windows 7 install disk in the DVD but could not boot that way either. I can not get in contact with Windows support in Australia and have not been able to find an email address.

When I turn on my laptop, it shows a black screen with non-flashing dash on top left after Lenovo logo. I did the clean install but it didn't work. After that,I tried to clean install Windows 10 on my old HDD and it works! Why my SSD isn't work?
P.S. It can enter the BIOS menu

What does it mean when you see a black screen that has a grey flashing dash located at the top left-hand corner of the screen? It moves down a bit before finally moving onto the Windows 10 logo, where it sometimes gets stuck and reboots (and the grey dash screen appears again before moving on).
I noticed this issue both during upgrade (when it failed and tried to recover the installation) and after installation. This issue occurred on an Acer Aspire Z5801. It does not occur on Windows 7.

So I have a bit of a problem where my screen flashes, I instantly thought it was display drivers so I uninstalled them only to worsen the problem, the computer restarted with a black screen which later turned into a desktop screen with no icons and a flashing screen (can't click anything or even load up the start menu with the windows key). I put it into safe mode but it does the same thing. Nothing works except task manager and i can't run task from it or it will exit out, system restore doesn't fix the issue either. Computer is a lenovo k450 i5-4440 8gb ram 1tb hdd with an evga gtx 760.

Since the November update I've found my icons in Settings / Notifications 'Show notifications from these apps' are black squares.
I've tried deleting and rebuilding the icon and thumbnail caches, rebooted and still have the same.
Before the update they were fine and I've not noticed any other icons show the same.
Any way to clear or refresh these icons ?

Searching about the issue online, it seems that this can be caused by norton or iCloud software, or two Microsoft background services that you have to disable in MSconfig to stop the screen flashing. I don't have norton or iCloud, and I disabled the two services. Still happening. Can't find anything else online that mentions how to fix this. Also apparently for most people the flashing doesn't start until they've reached the desktop already, whereas for me it starts before I can even do anything. PC completely unusable.

Only once in a blue moon do I see clean shortcut icons without arrows. It's almost always shortcut icons overlaid with black squares on the lower left corners. I had checked the Windows Registry against the steps in the article twice to find that they were all correct.

I installed Windows 7 Home Basic and did all Windows updates; this went fine. Reserved Windows 10 and downloaded/installed it when it was ready; this went fine. Once in Windows 10, tried to "reset this pc" by choosing "remove everything" and "just remove my files"; this went fine until doing a restart after reaching 100%.This issue being the "inaccessible_boot_device" error that many others have gotten which causes the PC to enter a restart loop.
Well, during this loop I made the (apparent) mistake of turning off my PC. Now, I can't even boot my PC at all. I get a black screen. I can't use the Windows 7 disc, can't use my MOBO disc, can't even boot into bios... nothing. All I see when I turn on my PC is literally a black screen with nothing on it. What can be done to fix this? I've read that putting Windows 10 on a USB by using the Microsoft media creation tool and booting from that to clean install works, but if I can't even boot from the Windows 7 disc, how can I boot from a USB? And I can't even enter BIOS to force a USB boot.
Okay, my PC will now boot into the "inaccessible_boot_device" error blue screen and does the restart loop. Not sure what I should do now. I'm afraid to power off my PC again.
Not sure why, but I was finally able to boot into BIOS. My only guess would be that, maybe when I tried(but failed) to remove my MOBO battery, just from me wiggling it caused it to reset? Idk.
Anyway, once in BIOS, I changed boot priority to DVD and was able to access reinstalling Windows 7.I am right now reinstalling Windows 7, on Disk 0 Partition 2(if that matters. wouldn't even allow me to install on partition 1 or 3).So, from the looks of things, everything is back to normal? I should be able to finish reinstalling Windows 7, do the updates and redownload/reinstall Windows 10 without issue? Though, this time I will NOT attempt to "reset this pc".
I'm back into Windows 10. So, I'm still not sure why I was finally able to boot into BIOS, but once I was able to, I changed DVD boot drive to top priority and was able to reinstall Windows 7 from the disc. I then did all Windows Updates. I then downloaded the Windows 10 ISO and mounted/installed it with Virtual Clone Drive.ng.

After closing down computer the other day, when trying to switch back on Windows start screen comes on with 4 squares and rotating dots, but the screen then just goes black or white with no mouse pointer.
I have tried F8 which goes into recovery mode and I have tried all repair modes, but none of them work.
it must surely be something to do with Windows as I can go into recovery mode.

This has been happening ever since I upgraded to 10 about 2 weeks ago. I start the computer, 3 second ASUS logo, then windows 10 logo comes up and it loads for about 10-20 seconds, then I get a black screen with a cursor for 30-60 seconds, followed by another loading screen and finally the login screen. About the same boot time I had on 7 except for the long black screen. I can move the cursor around during the black screen, and it sometimes has the blue loading circle next to it. I've tried disabling fast startup and my video drivers are up to date.
Device manager doesn't show more than one display adapter, but it does show 4 monitors if I show hidden devices. My BenQ monitor in DVI-D and Generic PnP monitor, which is my TV plugged into the DVI-I port on my 770, and then a hidden copy of each of those. I usually have the TV off with display on my BenQ, but windows seems to think the BenQ is the second monitor, calling the TV the PC screen when I check windows key + P. I don't know if that's relevant or not, but it caused a problem during my win10 install (windows switched to the TV display mid-install.) I tried switching the display ports while booting up but I still had the black screen.

So recently I have been getting very long boot times, not sure how long as after 20 mins I get bored and walk off. After silly amount of time trying to boot it comes to a black screen with a mouse curser. Ctrl + alt + del does not work but I found pressing start + r and typing explorer.exe makes everything work. I installed some Intel drivers other day while rooting my tablet, maybe this is the issue?

For two years I have had three hard drives installed. One small one went bad and at bootup I would get that information with "Press F1 to resume" which I would do and then windows would load. I upgraded to windows 10 from 7 three weeks ago, same message, and no problem, as it would still go right into windows. Last week I noticed windows update had a list of important updates. I believe I also had an nvideo GeForce driver update which I am sure I did first without problems.
When I did the windows updates and had to restart, I noticed I had a slightly different look but it still took me to the same press F1 to resume. However, the result was it went to a totally black screen with a tiny band of the new windows blue across the top and in the middle of the screen it said WAIT, not in windows type but in the same script when you first begin booting computer. It just remained there and there was no activity taking place, no blinking red light or solid red light like my computer always does. After at least 20 minutes of no activity I rebooted with the same result. Repeating the F1 kept giving the same result, and further reboots and then the F1 caused the computer to reboot maybe 2 out of 5 tries instead of directly going to the black screen. At one point I quickly saw something where I believe it askd to press tab or possibly delete and then gave an option to press F1 or F2. I am not sure which I pressed but it did go into windows and everything was fine for the rest of the day. I let my computer on but at some point overnight it had rebooted and back to the press F1 to resume which results in back to the black screen WAIT and this is where I am at again (I am using a different computer to send this).
