I prefer to have my system shut down overnight rather than sleeping. Is there any way to schedule a system boot at a specific time in the morning? Windows update is able to boot from shut down when it feels like it. Is there any way I can do this, apart from putting my PC to sleep overnight?
View 9 RepliesI have just built a new gaming PC and everything works fine, windows installed correctly, all drives are recognized programs are installed etc.
But I have a small problem... When I shut down, power off and leave my PC for a while, upon startup, windows wont boot. It goes onto the motherboard screen and then says ''starting automatic repair''. It gives me a list of options, and the only option which gets me back to windows is to restore to a windows recovery backup which I created. Every time I shut down, I have to restore and then add a few programs that got removed which is very annoying.
The PC is stable and all my programs which are installed are working fine, but for some reason, it enters this recovery mode when I start up from a shutdown.
I am running windows 10 64bit, my motherboard is an Asus VII Hero and I have installed all the drivers which are needed along with a few programs. I am thinking I may need to do a re-installation of windows, would that fix the problem?
There does not seem to be a way to schedule an automatic daily scan with Windows Defender. I got a action center notification to run a Defender scan. Is that something I can expect regularly? Having to do a regular manual scan will be difficult.
View 9 Replies10 doesn't seem to be booting very nicely. What I mean is that it seems to be having a difficult time initilizing my SSD, so upon boot I get a blank black screen for anywhere from 60-180 seconds, where the primary drive activity LED is inactive, before it actually boots. This could be problematic, because I need it to both boot and shut down very quickly since I use my laptop for class; no sleep mode, either, because my system is old and batteries no longer work with my mobo.
View 5 RepliesI have a laptop which had Windows 7 installed on a normal HDD and an SSD which I added after it was lying around spare. I then updated to Windows 10 via the free upgrade. Everything was working fine, and I decided to put Windows 10 on the SSD for quicker booting.
I did a clean install on the SSD using the Windows 10 installation media and everything now works fine until I shut down the laptop.
After powering on and seeing the Bios screen I then just get a black screen and the boot menu to choose which OS to boot off (Windows 10 is now installed on both the HDD and the SSD) does not appear.
A workaround is to go into the Bios after powering on and exiting the Bios without making any changes, then the boot menu appears as normal and I can log in to either installed OS. Also if I'm in Windows and restart then everything works as expected.
I've tried the repair tools from the Windows 10 installation media., which said there was nothing to repair, and have tried swapping to the old text based boot menu, which had the same problems.

View 8 RepliesNoticed that after an update from Windows Update you "Must" do a Reboot for the installation/update to process. In prior versions of Windows when I would take an update, I might just wait until I shut the PC down for the night, and it would finish up in the morning upon startup. In Windows 10 that no longer works (for me) it MUST be a Reboot for it to process...
View 9 RepliesWhen I set up a daily backup, it does not occur. I can do a manual backup, and it works, but the automatic daily does not. I have daily selected, and keep forever. I have my pictures and videos set to be skipped.
When I click on advanced settings, it says the File History is on, and the correct external hard drive is selected.
When I click on System Image Backup at bottom left, it says that Windows Backup has not been set up.
When I click on Set Up System Backup, it says that Express Zip Plus has expired, and prompts me to buy it.
I never installed "Express Zip Plus", and am not even familiar with it. Why should I have to buy something for my new computer?
When i shutdown windows Skype will not automatically close, giving me the error in the picture below. I have to manually right click on the Skype icon in the system tray and quit it, then shutdown windows again. It's a hassle.
I've reinstalled Skype. I'm running latest version of windows 1511 and all upto date. I'm using the Skype desktop app, on a desktop pc, in desktop mode.
Update Downloads are killing my streaming TV performance. I can't use the metered network option as it will slow my TV streaming. How can I control when Update Downloads take place?
View 1 RepliesI like to run Windows 10 as a Standard User. I use Syncthing to sync my files from my PC to my laptop and another machine. I want to schedule syncthing so that it starts when I log on. However when creating a task, I get a message saying the user doesn't have permission. How should I do this? I've followed this guide but it assumes you are running as Administrator. I've solved it using the second part of the guide, using the shell:startup folder, however I'd prefer to use Task Scheduler if possible.
Is there any way to schedule defrag to happen at a particular day/time?
Also, what is this weirdly-named folder (picture)?
When I place an entry scheduled at 3pm and ends at 4pm, it will take a step back in the 2pm-3pm slot. I really want to use this app because of its compatibility with the mail app, but this keeps me from doing so.

View 3 RepliesBefore installing Windows 10 I clean reinstalled my Windows 7 onto a new SSD but inadvertently left my BIOS boot drive as my old HDD. Now I find that I have my windows 10 boot files in the HDD and the rest of the OS on the SSD, so I am still dependant on that old HDD. It's quite old, and I tried to swap it out to a new HDD but found this issue.
I've tried BootRec /RebuildBcd, BootRec /FixMbr and BootRec /FixBoot, rebooting the PC between each, but without success. I want to make the SSD bootable, what have I missed?
I have Win10 pro and set to "notify to schedule restart" and "defer updates". Also have "give me updates for other MS products..." unchecked.However, Win10 just decided to reboot the computer and apply updates. What the heck is this? I had a major session of work going on.

View 1 RepliesI have Windows 7 and Windows 10 Enterprise Build 10240 set up in a dual boot configuration on the same hard drive. Windows 7 is the first partition on that drive and Windows 10 is the second. I have decided to keep Windows 10 as my main OS and want to remove Windows 7 and reclaim that space for the Windows 10 partition.
What is the easiest way to accomplish this without a complicated and long procedure? I have tried Easeus Partition Master 10.5, but am unable to format or delete this active partition. I tried to format and/or delete this through Windows 10 as well with no success.
My system is home built, the boot drive being a Samsung 850 EVO series m.2 SSD. Win 10 was installed via USB, the ssd being the only installed drive. Installation was very quick and easy and once booted the PC performs very nicely.
However, very time it starts from shutdown, on the 1st attempt it reaches the Windows logo and shuts down.. I can guarantee that the 2nd attempt results in a perfect startup. I don't know if this: "BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED SystemRootSystem32driversdxgkrnl.sys" is relevant.
All drivers seem to be up to date and working. Safe mode it starts 1st time. Fast boot enabled/disabled makes no difference.
I was playing with disc partitions and i accidentally deleted something... The problem is, that when i start my computer, Windows boot manager error appears (with no options, nothing, just some text about how should i reinstall / repair...), but when i start my computer, i have no way to access BIOS (I know how to access bios in my pc, I was accessing it like 20 times during last few days while installing various OSs... always with F2).
So actually I am stuck in a loop: start pc - cant access bios - windows boot manager error- restart - cant access bios - win boot manager error - restart....
With windows, i had problems with accessing bios before, but it could be solved by some kind of "absolute shutdown" of a system - holding shift while clicking "Shut down" - then i could easily enter bios with F2 during start.
