Booting From USB
Aug 21, 2015
I had never had my computer set to boot from USB but I created a bootable flash drive with Win 10 on it and wanted to try it. I set the BIOS boot options to try the CD drive first, then USB, and then the Hard drive. It booted fine but I have a question now.
If I have a non-bootable USB storage device plugged in and either start up or restart my computer, after the BIOS post I get the message, "Missing Operating System" and the whole boot process stops and will not proceed to the Hard Drive. I had assumed it would work the same as the CD-ROM boot where if the media is not bootable, it just skips it and goes to the next option in the list. Now I have found that the same thing happens on my Win 7 machine. Is this normal? If it is, I will turn off USB boot again and just go back to burning disks.

I was wondering what would be the best option for installing Windows 10 is, I am building a new computer and I have a spare optical drive if necessary. I just don't know if the USB version will auto-install windows after I finalize the motherboard BIOS.

My Windows 10 installation does not boot anymore, the PC reboots while it's booting up. I have tried every advanced options available (safe mode, low resolution video...) to no avail. I tried enabling the bootlog but I cannot find the log file when I eventually browse the disk from my windows 7 OS.
I'd like to restore the installation rather than reinstalling it. The build was not the very last one but the preceding one, so not so old.

I'm having a problem with my desktop (win 10) booting whenever I'm using my laptop (win 7 still). Now, I recently moved, so actually have everything on my network now (yippie). Before I had some networked drives mapped to the laptop, so I disconnected those, problem still persists. I just changed power options on the desktop to all (of the power plans), allowing sleep for media streaming, still, same problem. Then just 30 mins ago or something I joined my laptop to the workgroup and the homegroup (I haven't been using it much and been busy with school and work), thinking it may be some thing that clicks with that and gets it working right. Still it keeps doing this! Very annoying and obviously I dont want it to do this (of course the desktop uses a good amount of power and I dont need it on when I want to use my laptop).
May have to upgrade the laptop to windows 10 or do a clean install of win 7 for this to work I guess. I kind of like Win 7 better actually still, but I'll keep Win 10 on the desktop because of DX10. (really the only thing I care for on Win 10 is the new xbox app and of course, DX10, other than that, eh, its okay, would rather have the old start menu and control panel and though I didn't really use it, windows media center).

My pc boots up and loads to my home screen, the icons all load up but the computer freezes, I can still move the mouse around and click on icons but nothing happens. There is a constant loading symbol for my mouse cursor. I managed to get it into safe mode once and ran a virus scan and it detected nothing.

My issue is, I have a laptop with windows 10 home installed (all legit), I wanted to replace the laptop hdd with an ssd and put the original hdd in an enclosure to use as an external hdd.
This all went well put the hdd in the enclosure and went to boot windows 10 from the now externall hdd and end up getting an error saying unable_to_access_boot_media, I have had automatic repair come up but does not fix the issue.
The external hdd uses a USB 3.0 connections so as suggested in another post I turned the BootDeviceFlag to 0x14 to load the USB 3.0 drivers early but this has not fixed the issue either. Where to go from here?

If you have an on board Intel graphics controller as well as an add on graphics card, windows thinks you have one more monitor connected than you actually have. so when windows loads its outputting the video signal to a bogus monitor.firstly wait long enough so the mouse cursor to appear when you move the mouse.(blank screen with a white mouse cursor). Then press the space-bar and enter your login password or pin (yes your doing this blind)
You should now be logged into windows.if the desktop dose not appear after 30 seconds then press WindowsKey-P down arrow twice and enter.

I am using Dell inspiron laptop (pretty old one) which started acting weirdly. Upon examining, there was a problem with HDD so I had it changed.
As soon as I got new HDD installed and installed Windows 10 on it, computer started acting weird again - slow startups, random freeze etc.- but it was running ok and I was fine with it. But earlier today, it suddenly displayed BSOD and crashed when it was idle. Now to the main and the funny part, it does not boot anymore. To elaborate, blank screen appears after BIOS screen (right when the logo of windows should be displayed) and it remains blank for several more minutes before the logo and spinning dots magically appear, it doesnt disappear thereafter.
I figured, I could run startup repair or some other tool to solve the problem by booting from the DVD of windows 10. Now for this one, the logo appears with the spinning dots which disappears after a while like it should. And after it disappears, blank screen persists thereafter. Dumbfounded, I tried booting from a USB stick of Windows 8 I had which gave the same problem.

Upgrade from Win 7 64bit to Win 10 64 bit on a Gateway laptop 3 days ago and everything worked well. This morning the laptop hung up in the booting process and wont fully load the OS. I get to the window logo, a greyed login box, and in task bar the clock and battery icon but nothing else. No start button no search and none of the pinned programs. Setup has only one user
I cant get into safe mode with Win key + R so I cant even get far enough in to roll back to a restore point or back to Win7 and I would prefer not to have to do a clean install of Win 7, restore my image and then re-upgrade if at all possible.

I upgraded my laptop from windows 7 to windows 10 in August and there were no problems. For a month now, it boots till a black screen with the cursor or to the screen with the five dots. The only solution that I have found to boot normally is after five to six resets it boots normally, but next time it cannot boot again. I performed a system restore to a restore point of a month ago, but it came with an error about a problem of my antivirus program. I unistalled my antivirus and I tried again, but this time there were no restore points.

My two and a half year old pc, after switching graphic card, started to get BSOD about two weeks ago, saying Whea uncorrectable error. I did some research, and tried resetting CMOS, updating BIOS, and memtest86 to see if my rams are done. I also used some intel tools to check if my cpu has problem, but there was no signs. I thought about updating my drivers, but nothing worked. I did not oc my cpu, and it was at safe temperature while gaming, around 50-65.
I got really confused, so I decided to reinstall os, I cleaned out everything with a fresh install. My pc worked well with no BSOD for a week. I did not copy any of my backup files on my external hard drive to the reinstalled pc, and now while I was playing game(assassin's creed syndicate this time) , it happens again, still WHEA UNCORRECTABLE ERROR. I am confused that it does not seem like driver or software issues, so would it be hardware issues?
How to read dump files or anything and can't seem to solve it.

I'm having some issues with my PC I have never had before. The computer is a personal rig I have personally worked on, but these last weeks some problems started appearing.
Problem 1) Had this problem for months, I think this problem also escalated to create
problem 2) I cannot "restart" my computer. Do I want to restart? I would have to shutdown and then start it up again.
When I press restart, it starts logging off, shutting down, and when my screen go blank (no signal, pc lights/fans = on) it just stays there for ever. Tried waiting once but after 4 hours I gave up.
When I start my computer I get my BIOS screen. After the BIOS timer, the boot screen gets taken over by Windows 10 with it's loading circle.
My computer stays loading here for about 8-10 minutes and then it continues booting like normal.
I am willing to follow many steps to find out this problem!! I suspect maybe unfinished installations or my other HDD interfering with the initial boot?
Also, could this problem be caused by a PSU failing? (My oldest pc component)
My windows is now on my main ssd (samsung evo 500gb) - I also have a ocz 250gb and western hdd 1tb which I had windows on previously (user files still on, no boot)...

So we're trying to get our first Win10 VM up and running. I downloaded the latest ISo from the Volume License site and installed it on a VM just fine. I ran all Windows Updates as well.
After that I ran Sysprep and choose OOBE, Generalize, and Shutdown. I then copied the VHDX file to a new location for a new VM as we normally do.
That all seemed to work fine until I then attached that hard drive file to a new VM and fired it up. After clicking the through the timezone page I get an error stating:
Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation.
I found some info online about changing the minimum password setting to 0 but that did not work. I then fired up my Template machine to see if that would setup fine and that now gets the same error so I'm kind of stuck.
I don't want to have to do manual steps on every VM we create

I recently purchased G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-8GBXL for my computer. I ran a memory test with memtest86+ and my old memory had 175 errors, which is not good. So I purchased the new ram, but when I installed it in my computer, the system turns on but Windows 10 will not boot.
Does this mean that the RAM is bad? I know that it's compatible because I narrowed my search down on NewEgg to RAM that was compatible with my motherboard. The one thing that I did notice is that my motherboard's manual says that it's compatible with 2 sticks of DRAM and the RAM that I purchased is SDRAM.

I have just upgraded my PC from Windows 8 to Windows 10.
My antivirus software needed to restart and boot in to Safe Mode.
But, for years I have used the 4 digit pin login from Win 8,but I cannot remember the normal password.
Safe Mode ony allows login via the normal password and not the pin, so I nol longer have accessto my PC.
How can I get the PC to start in normal mode.
I do not have any install or recovery media.

I got a HP Notebook yesterday that had Windows 8.1 on it. Today I decided I wanted to reinstall Windows 10 (not upgrade, but clean install) on it and I do have experience in reinstalling operating systems. I reinstalled Windows 10 from a USB stick and when the computer restarted after the installation was done, it would keep booting from the USB stick. I exited the installation screen and then went to the BIOS to change boot priority to "OS Manager", but all I got was an error which I don't remember what it said, and then it just restarted again.
So my question is, how can I get Windows 10 to boot after is has installed and restarted? This is my laptop: HP 15.6 Laptop - Black (Intel Celeron N3050 / 500GB HDD / 4GB RAM / Windows 8.1) : Laptops - Best Buy Canada

EDIT: Haven't experienced it on RTM build (10240)
EDIT: Got back to RTM build (10240) and haven't experience it so it must be a bug on insider build.

I've just built my desktop and I'm trying to dual boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu 15.04.
I've already partitioned my hard drive, and installed Windows 10 and Ubuntu 15.04, but I'm trying to get to a place where I can choose what OS to start whenever I turn on my computer.
At the moment, I can run both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 15.04 if I go into the BIOS and rearrange my boot priorities, but that's just a huge hassle. Is there a convenient way to choose at startup, similar to how Windows 8 had this?

I have upgraded from Win8.1... It seems all is workin +10, but just a few days ago I see this thing. I set the screensaver to 10 minutes delay, I choosse the 3D animation and bingo . nice like in y old Win 8.1. The problem is simple. When I shutoff my pc and start again the screensaver settings change again to 1 minute( default) and no 3D sacreensavere any more !! I must set again to X minutes, select the animation , apply and save and this over and over . Never problems before with my Win 8.1. I use the same hardware and apps. Everything is the same on my PC than before.

I have the ESD for Windows 10 built 10240 . I need to clean install it on a different drive and dual boot it with Windows 8.1. Can I simply boot with the 10 ISO (in UEFI boot) and clean install it on a different drive?
Would I then be able to dual boot it with my activated 8.1 copy?
