Browser/Email :: Edge Closes Almost Immediately After Start
Nov 24, 2015
Now Edge is not a browser I intend to use full time but was asked to try Netflix in it to figure out another problem, see my Netflix thread on that one.
Every time I go to open edge I get the blue window to come up and then everything for it closes down. Looking at task manager while this happens I see it jump from open app to background process to then fully closed, nothing listed in task manager.
Once in a while it stays open long enough that I can see the address bar and other of its UI elements start to render before it vanishes.
Edge appears when I click on it--or something does--then immediately disappears. Is there a way to reinstall it? or correct this behavior? I recently had huge problems with setting permissions and to solve them I restored to an earlier restore point.
At the far bottom left corner of the desktop resides the Windows 10 logo. It is suppose to open to a menu of 3rd party apps and Windows functions.
When I click the icon with a mouse, the menu screen opens for a split second and the immediately closes. This does not allow me enough time to open any 3rd party program on the menu or to employ any of the listed Windows 10 apps.
This also means that I do not have time to click on restart or power down and must do a hard shut down pressing the power button on the computer case.
At some point in the last couple of weeks the Send To/Mail Recipient function has stopped working. When I select a file and do the send to, Windows starts thinking, the explorer window that I have selected this from stops taking input and then eventually, with no error messages, the explorer window closes and desktop explorer resets.
My Default mail client is Outlook 2013 (15.0.4745.1000)
Since installing the November Windows 10 update (11/17/15) none of my favorites are being stored in the default Edge folder. While in Edge the favorites are available but when I go to the default folder they are not listed. Is there another location they may be being saved or has my default location somehow been changed? My AppData folder shows a creation date of 11/17/15 with no modifications being made in favorites since that date.
I am having a problem whereby my default browser keeps changing from IE11 back to either Edge or blank. Why this might be happening or what program is causing it to change? I thought it maybe the Windows Auto Update that keep changing but am now not so sure of that since the last recorded update is back on 14th January and my default Browser got changed again last evening.
The only other programs that run regularly are Norton Internet Security and Norton Utilities. However, I have been through the settings of both of those programs and cannot detect anything that would indicate that they change the default Browser.
Also, in IE11 under the advanced tab I have ticked the option the "Tell me if Internet Explorer is not the default web browser" and yet (a) I do not get a notification and (b) the default browser keeps getting changed.
So we have these tools that need elevated rights within IE to install correctly. In windows 7 we always did the right click, run as admin thing. However, now after the upgrade and Edge there seems to be no availability to run it as admin. Tried all the icons & right click that I can find for Edge but not getting the option anywhere.Tried also with the Edge app from /Windows/Systemapps and it didnt give the option either. Of course if I go back to IE it allows me..
Edge is a great browser! However one thing I really miss from IE is having my favorites sidebar always visible at all times. With Edge you have to select it EACH TIME and pin it to the window display. This becomes a real pain and seems unnecessary. Is it possible to configure the favorite's sidebar to be always on by default? A real extra would be to have it on the left hand side again like IE which seemed to have this facility/capability just right. The horizontal favorites across the top is useless because so few are visible. (No luck with other forums) else I'm going back to IE.
WINDOWS 10 PRO: Pursuant to the tutorial in Ten Forums, the FAVORITES folder in the EDGE browser is stored in the DataStore folder. Is that correct? Is the tutorial correct? My check of the folder indicates the tutorial was correct.
When I first got Win 10, the Edge browser worked great but after a time it simply quit working. The opening screen with the icon comes up but then it goes back to my desktop. I can still use Explorer but Edge had some features I liked and I would like to go back to it before too long. I have seen some comments here about proxy servers and the like but I am not brave enough to tinker with that.
I upgraded my computer to Windows 10, however I cannot play Flash content in Edge browser. It is enabled in the advanced settings in Edge and it is still not working, saying I have to update my Flash plugin, however it is supposed to be bundled with Edge.
I do not have a problem with Flash content in Chrome or IE11 browsers, but would like to be able to use Edge as well.
Now, I also encounter the following error message from Windows Update:
"Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3087040) - Error 0x800f0922" which I guess is related to the issue of missing Flash Player in my Windows.
I mistakenly chose IE as the browser for my emails to open in when I imported my mails from outlook and I wish to change this to MS Edge. How to I go about this? I've checked in the settings, but it doesn't seem to have what I'm looking for. MY IE doesn't function as well as Edge and I'd like to correct this.
This problem has frustrated me to no end. For some reason, flash videos on websites like Gamespot, IGN and Gametrailers will not work with the Edge browser. All I get is a black screen with sound, or most of the time without any sound at all.
Here are some of the things I've tried already:
1) Updating video card drivers. I'm running the latest NVidia drivers, version 361.75
2) Used sfc /scannow and DISM commands. sfc /scannow finds the driver opencl.dll as corrupt, but that's a well known bug. I still can't view any videos regardless of whether I'm using the Microsoft or NVidia version of that .dll.
3) Reinstall the Edge browser using this video
4) Checked whether Adobe Flash player was turned on in Edge about a million times
5) Uninstalled all Windows 10 updates (including flash related ones) and then reinstalled them.
I've discovered one useful feature of Edge is the ability to cast video to my Sony TV. However, the playback is sometimes jerky. Is there a way optimising the playback settings when casting videos via Edge?
Yesterday mid-day my Edge browser screen-font-size suddenly went from "normal" to miniscule. At the time I was reading info on a sports web-site. Just prior to that my touch-pad (ASUS laptop) suddenly reverted to having the touch-pad feature "TAP" as ON, and because I have a small shake in my hand, this feature most-often causes problems.
When I converted from Win 8.1 to Win10 a few weeks ago I immediately searched for and found the option (under ASUS Smart Gesture app) and turned all TAP features off. It worked fine until yesterday. I searched for possible solutions and discovered I could not access ASUS Smart Gesture, so I re-installed it- that feature is now turned off again, but I cannot get Edge to display in normal font-size. That's the only place it occurs
I cannot use the Microsoft print to pdf feature on my Lenovo laptop from the Windows 10 Home Edge browser. The print screen shows a blank preview. Print to pdf does work on the laptop from any other app such as Word, OneNote, etc.
I can print to pdf from Edge on my desktop running the same version of Windows 10 and Edge.
I have completely uninstalled the print to pdf feature on the laptop, all the way to uninstalling the print server drivers and disabling the feature in the Windows 10 installation. And then enabling and reinstalling it. I still cannot print to a pdf file from Edge on the laptop. It is not a print problem, as this feature does work on all other apps/programs.
So I decided to give Edge another try, and seeing that I am still unable to directly import my favorites from Firefox I went around it by exporting them to a HTML file, importing them into IE and then into Edge.
Well only half of them ended up appearing in edge and I now have a ton of empty folders...so I would like to delete them all and start again but I cant find a way to completely remove them all.
After the "November update" to Windows 10, the Edge browser no longer uses a folder structure to store favorites. Instead, it now uses an Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) database. So, that means you can no longer just do a copy-n-paste in an attempt to export your favorites. I've created a demonstration project that reads from this ESE database and produces an HTML-based "bookmark.htm" file that can be used to import into other browsers (like IE, Chrome, etc.)take a look at this article for the technical details: URL....or if you're not squeamish about loading an EXE file from a hobbyist like me, you can download the executable install file from: URL...
How do I manage my favorites in the new Edge browser? I accidently moved a favorites folder into another favorites folder & I don't know how to get the folder out of the other folder?
I've been asked this a few times already and have always replied "It can't be done"
Anyhow, seeing how I didn't follow the instructions in my signature and have found myself corrupting my Windows system while heavily overclocking and stress testing the CPU on a custom water-loop, I have found myself wanting to export them to IE11 so that my MS account stores them for easy retrieval. (I have also just copied the folder to my backup drive too!)
So I wanted to work out how and this is my solution:
In File Explorer, navigate to your Edge Favorites:
Copy the links (aka favorites) to the folder [URL] favorites will now be in IE11 (If IE11 is currently open, you will have to close and re-open for the favorites to appear). If you want them to be imported to Chrome, Firefox or wherever, you can now import in the normal way.
I've checked everything I know to check. I still cannot get any browser history. I get only the statement "You'll see your browsing history here once you've visited a site".
I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10 a while ago.I can get the start menu ok but cant get the edge browser or cortona. When I click on edge it comes on for a few seconds then leaves the screen.
I just installed latest version of CCleaner. When I run it asks to turn off MS Edge! Edge was not running to my knowledge. Does it run in background? I did a start up of computer (after shutting down) and then copied CCleaner from USB stick to desktop and installed. No other programs were opened.
