I just turned my laptop on and I can't get to my desktop, it just opens me on my app screen and even when I click the button on the bottom left that normally would allow me to switch between the two it does nothing.
I'm using windows 10, since it was available, and I doubt if this possible to make an application start on windows startup on a "new desktop" using the multiple desktops option in Windows 10.
One night I go on my pc to find out that it doesn't work properly anymore. I boot up normally but when I try to open any program, the loading icon appears on my cursor and after about 10 seconds my desktop crashes. My wallpapers turn from their normal wallpaper element to white plain background (the same way when a program is not responding it turns white).
Even if I am able to open a program, it will take 1 plus minute to open it, and then take another minute to close it. I tried to download drivers but it wouldn't let me because it just crashes.
My build is: Amd fx 6300 @ 3.8ghz Gtx 760 Asus M5A97 R2.0 Samsung evo 840 120gb ssd A 1TB and 2TB drive 550w psu Windows 10
I can't reinstall windows 10 as I don't have the disc since I got it for free from the windows 7 upgrade, and my windows 7 reinstallation disc is broken, so that's a no go.
I installed W10 five weeks ago and until now all has been well.
When I turn on my laptop the"normal" picture screen opening appears showing the correct date / time.
Any action to open the log in screen or any key press results in the log on screen showing for about a half second followed by a blank screen with only the cursor arrow showing.
I have 'Start' full screen. When I open programs from here, they open on the desktop and the Start screen disappears. That's how I expect it! I noticed that if I create a web shortcut on 'Start', it behaves differently. When I open it from the Start screen, it opens and I can see it on the taskbar, but I'm still looking at the Start screen; it doesn't disappear.
If I have the Start screen up, and I click on anything in Quick Launch, it's the same. They open, but focus doesn't switch to them, the Start screen stays there. If I have 'Start' not full screen, and I open that web shortcut, I see it open behind the Start menu, but the menu stays there. What I would like is to have everything behave the same. When I open anything from 'Start', I want focus to switch to the item I just opened and 'Start' to disappear. Is there a setting I've overlooked?
I've got a Lenovo Desktop that was upgraded from 8.1 to 10 just after the release. I have a Toshiba Laptop which I upgraded from 7 to 10 about a month ago. Occasionally, the desktop screen for the desktop would be the default desktop image for the Toshiba laptop with "Toshiba" in the lower right corner.
Last night I performed a clean install of 10 on my Laptop. I went to bed and let the laptop work the updates as I was sleeping. When I woke up the Lenovo, again, the desktop showed the Toshiba default image rather than the one I had changed it to previously.
I had researched the issue but only after making this post is when I realized that all accounts under the same Microsoft ID will sync, including the desktop personalization. Not exactly a feature that I like. I'd like to turn that feature off.
When I boot my pc sometimes I get a black screen. But by pressing ctr alt & delete I can log out, and then login and its then OK. I have reset my pc but its still the same.
Ok, I have looked for the solution to this problem, but all my searches find a different issue. This has now happened to 2 HP Windows 10 laptops. My son has grabbed them, and hit something, so now, the desktop is gone. It only displays a list of apps, similar to the Windows 8.1 main screen. When you select a new program, either from the app view that it is stuck in, or hitting the widows button in the lower left, and opening a new program, I see the desktop for maybe a second before the app/program opens. When you close it, it goes right back to the app view. I have seen "fixes" everything from the Windows key+D to reset to factory settings. I have added a "show desktop" icon to the task bar, but when you hit it, the desktop shows for a second, then right back to the app view.
Running Windows 10 Home. Build 10240. When I start the system the screen is black. When I go into File Explorer and click on Desktop all of the items appear there. I can click on say e-mail and I can get into mail and read or answer them.
could I use mct and get the latest there and then do an upgrade which should keep all of my data and files. I originally did the upgrade from Windows 7 Home and that all went well.
After I bootup my desktop shows then after a few minutes it turns into a black screen with cursor only. Ctrl+alt+delete is working and I managed to get into file explorer by "open file location" in task manager>processes.
I tried checking updates for windows but I am updated, I tried reinstalling my amd driver for windows 10 and tried the method windows+p-down-down-enter since I saw in other threads that windows 10 "detects" two monitors due to two graphic cards.
Same thing happens in safe mode. I think some services of windows exits and I can't pinpoint what. Even the keyboard shortcuts like volume doesn't work except for brightness.
Images below is the only way I get to my apps, I just right click on this pc then properties to get to control panel.
My wife's computer somehow acquired my user name which I had no password for, and she nor I can login into windows 10 on her computer, we can't get past the windows desktop screen.
I’ve been having trouble with my Windows 10 desktop resolution and icon placement, which started when I tried to change the resolution in an online game. I have a 4K monitor, which is set to 3840 x 2160, and it’s been a mess getting the screen to stay at that resolution. I think it’s stabilized now at that high rate, but I’m no longer able to place the icons in the locations on the screen that I want them. All the icons are gathered on the left side of the screen in no special order, and when I try to drag them to other spots on the screen, they just fly back to their original spot. I’m assuming that all this trouble I’m having is the result of persistent bugs in Windows 10, but is there any kind of fix to make sure that my resolution stays at 3840 x 2160, and that I can move my desktop icons the way I like?
I note in the screenshots that there is an option in W10 marked 'Use full screen start when in the desktop'. This seems puzzling to me, as I will want to use the full screen start when on the start screen (of course) but obviously I won't want a full screen start when running the Desktop app. Is it possible to use the start menu when running the Desktop app and still have the full start screen presented when I close it/switch away from it? Much like Win8 (only with the new and improved start menu of course) where I right click on the Windows logo icon to get the start menu and left click it to return to the start screen?
I go to Canterbury College and they have the school system set up so that students can do a remote desktop connection a there server and login into their accounts using there own computers. I bring my laptop to college and I have to login to the remote desktop using a shortcut on my desktop to use it. I have searched the web and do not know if it is possible for me to set it up on Windows to let me instead of clicking my user name on the lock screen but let me sign into the remote desktop as soon as I turn the computer on. This will make it easier than login into my home account and then the school account if I could log straight into the school system. At the moment the school laptops automatically connect to the remote desktop server when you turn them on.
1) When my screen goes to sleep, I can't wake it up by using the keyboard or mouse. I have to force a hard reboot by pressing and holding the power button.
2) I just had a crash in which my screen became white with grey vertical lines. I would've blamed my gpu but I can run benchmarks just fine..
When ever I turn on my pc it shows this home screen, and if I access desktop by searching it a folder opens which contain desktop icon and even by pressing windows logo button it doesn't change to desktop but remains at that home screen. I am using different thing by Tab+Alt buttons.
Also you can see the task bar it has a strange view that was never before and see the bottom right corner it is strange! also by clicking the extreme bottom right corner I didn't reach the desktop. (Not even by pressing Windows logo+D button).
I'm currently running Build 10130. For some reason, when I view "All Apps" I have folders for my desktop apps, but nearly all of the icons for the apps themselves are missing.
I have tried the following solutions & none have fixed the problem:
SFC /scannow DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (I've run both of those alternatively 3X in a row - based on another thread) Deleted the icon cache in my user folder Run the Windows Troubleshooter for Windows Update Created a new local account & logged in. Enabled the Administrator account & logged in. Did a repair install of Build 10130
When I navigate to C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms I can see everything and it's all just fine. For some reason the icons simple refuse to appear on the start screen.
I've checked the permissions on those folders and they appear to be fine.
I've tried right clicking on a program and selecting "pin to start" and nothing happens.
I've checked C:UsersmynameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms as well and it seems to be fine, but still nothing changes.
How is Windows 10 creating the Start screen icons? Is there a way to force it to rebuild everything?
I have an HP ENVY 4 notebook PC (64-bit OS/x64-Based processor) and I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7, the only issue is that my screen is black with the cursor, so if I hit CTRL + ALT + DEL and open Task Manager and then run new task Explorer.exe my desktop comes back And I can see my apps but then it goes back to black.
I installed desktop gadget for my win 10 and for some weird reason when I am in dota 2 menu and then go back to desktop (windows button or alt+tab) my gadgets (default windows gadgets) calendar, weather and CPU&RAM meter turns black like there is only buttons on right top side of it... but when I move across weather gadget with cursor it just clear itself rest two are black calendar complete and under CPU&RAM meter is something like black panel and when I press button for changing size it fix itself .
I am having a problem on Windows 10 where the desktop has been taken over by the start menu. I am no longer able to resize windows as one would on a desktop, but rather they are treated as apps. I will try to post some pictures of the problem. It is almost like Windows 10 has forgotten that it is not Windows 8 and has in addition deleted the desktop. I will try to post some pictures of what the problem looks like (the image in the background was my desktop background, now the remnant of the old desktop). I have tried changing the option in the settings->personalization->start->use full start screen, but to no avail. I have turned my computer on and off a number of times. The funny thing is that my other account on the same computer does not have the same problem, it still has the desktop fully functional.
I can't get the desktop to properly size up on my screen. You can notice in the screenshot (in the lower right corner) that part of the taskbar is cut off. I have tried making adjustments via the NVIDIA control panel to no avail.
I'm using a 50" Plasma HDTV and it is hooked up to my PC via HDMI. My previous HDTV was a 42" LCD and I never had a problem with desktop size and position.
After upgrading to windows 10, my desktop will flash to a black screen for a few seconds and the desktop seems to refresh itself. Every time this happens it will close out of any files I have open and will even change focus to the desktop for several programs. This happens every 1 to 3 minutes. Have had this problem from day 1 of upgrading to windows 10.
I have looked for solutions to the problem, however, none of the solutions have worked for me. Other users had problems that occurred with the iCloud (which i don't have installed) and reporting services (tried turning these services off and nothing changed).
After updating to Windows 10 turned my computer ont his morning and signed in. Now desktop screen appears but keeps blacking out and reloading. Unable to open anything and tried rebooting, still happening.
I installed windows 10 from 8.1 on my Vision E2 Gateway. When I sign in, the desktop keeps flashing a black screen every second. It doesn't allow me to open anything, I can't click on any icons visible, and this has been happening ever since I first signed in with windows 10. Is it a virus or something? It can't be that my computer isn't compatible, because it TOLD me it WAS.
I do not seem to have a desktop all of a sudden. All I have is this full screen start menu. How to turn this off, or how I turned it on. How to get this back to a traditional desktop?
