View 2 RepliesI served in the Air Force communications division. I have managed million dollar installations. I am in college working toward a programming degree. I can not for the life of me get my "All Apps" menu to show up on my start menu. I have even searched google and was given every single way of adding and removing programs from the all apps folder but not a single article on how to get the actual folder option to show up.
View 1 RepliesThis is an option on the Windows 7 Start Menu. On Windows 8.x, I used Start8 to get the Administrative Tools menu. But since Windows 10 now has a native start menu, I'd rather not mess with third part start menus. Right now I go to Control Panel to get Administrative Tools. But even Control Panel isn't on the start menu unless it get pinned.
View 3 Repliesleft click on Start Menu doesn't respond, search doesn't respond, can't find settings!
View 1 RepliesSo whenever I close all my tabs I have the windows 10 start menu with all the tiles show up, but I want to see my desktop. It switches between them like every week and I have it set to not show in personalization. What to do?
View 2 RepliesI have two drives, an SSD (with Windows on) and a hard drive (with all my files on).
When using the start menu to search for something, it will only show results that are on my SSD. This is annoying as the majority of the things I'm looking for when searching are on my HDD, so I have to open explorer and go through all my documents trying to find the single file I'm looking for.
I was previously advised to change my indexing options. I've changed my indexing options to include my hard drive when searching, but it has still not changed.
Here's what my indexing options look like .....
I've installed office 2016 on my desktop, and the icons on the start menu are just blank icons. They have the background colors for each app, but the actual program icon is not there. i've already tried reinstalling the entire suite, running a number of programs, etc. but nothing has worked so far.
my other current issue is when I restart explore the start menu and desktop is completely unresponsive, and I have to restart the computer to fix the issue.
On occasion when I mouse over either the start bar or the taskbar it doesn't change colour like it usually does (the little blue background it changes to for instance) and it doesn't let me click on them. As well as this, it doesn't let me click on any window that isn't the currently selected one. I've tried running SFC /scannow but it says there's no problem, as well as reinstalling windows apps with powershell.
There doesn't seem to be any noticeable way to recreate this happening reliably, it just happens completely randomly. I've found a way to fix it when it comes up, which is to run any program in administrator mode (I usually run cmd in administration mode by opening it with my keyboard and holding ctrl shift enter) and then when the message asking if I want to open it in administration mode comes up, entering yes with my keyboard. When I do this it fixes it back to normal.
Did the free upgrade from Win8.1 about three weeks ago. When I first did the upgrade everything worked as it should. Left on vacation and came back, the computer wanted to do an update, so I restarted the computer. Now since the update my "Start" button doesn't work. I can right click and a text version pops up. My "Search " line at the bottom is gone as well.
I have tried the adding a new user, but it won't let me. I can get to the point where it asks "family member" or "guest" but when I click on either one nothing happens.
I have also tried both directly in PowerShell and from an elevated CMD prompt
Go to Search and type powershell
Right click on the PowerShell icon and select Run as Administrator
In PowerShell enter the following key and press Enter:
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml”}
Wait for PowerShell to execute the command (a few errors might show up, ignore them)
When everything is finished try to open Start Menu again
Search doesn't work in the right clicked menu, so went through Task Man (and clicked run as Admin) But the command just sits there, I get nothing. Copied and pasted the above text string and when I hit enter I get "deployment operation progress....." it sits there and does nothing after that. How long should I have to wait? When I ran this in Ele. CMD IO let it run for over an hour and it never changed from the original "Deployment progress...." In the PowerShell (admin) I let it run for 15 minutes and nothing.
I also went into Regedit and tried this fix. It didn't do anything either
Method 2: Solve the problem with Registry Editor
If Powershell solution somehow didn’t work for you, you can try to fix your problem with Registry Editor, because your problem maybe lays somewhere in the registry. Here’s what you should do to solve your Start Menu problem with Registry Editor:
Press Windows key and R at the same time and type regedit
Open Registry Editor and navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersion ImmersiveShellLauncher
Click Edit > New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it UseExperienceDouble-click the newly created item and set the value to 0Click OK, close the Registry Editor and then restart your computer.
Asus MB, AMD Phenomx3 chip, 8Gb RAM
This little program is powerful and it's free unlike the one stardock is offering.
It even brings Games Explorer back.

Looking at this thread, I have seen that it's possible to change the layout to look like Windows 7: [URL]
However, the website doesn't tell you exactly how to do it.
I'd like to make it look like this: [URL] ...
And it currently looks like this:
Yesterday my start menu suddenly stopped working. In it's place I had a little white house icon on the task bar. I finally figured out that that was a Lenovo product called Pokki that was apparently designed to replace the missing start menu in Windows 8. I deleted it and rebooted but my start menu still doesn't work. Then I noticed that my C drive is now called "Windows 8_OS (C". Is it possible that somehow I've reverted to Windows 8 and that's why everything is messed up? I certainly did not do this deliberately. The only other thing is that I noticed that before all this started that the Comodo firewall I had been using was gone. I thought it maybe happened when I installed Windows 10 (which had been working fine for several months, BTW) - I reinstalled Comodo but then uninstalled again thinking that might be the problem. (It wasn't.)
My start menu did freeze up once before - I fixed it by deleting explorer.exe and then putting it in again as advised when I googled it. This time, I don't even have explorer.exe in my task manager.
There is the option on many things in windows explorer, if you right click, "Pin to start" .. for instance.. say you have a folder you want to pin a shortcut to.. you right click that.. pin to start.. it should then appear in the start menu.. well on my system it doesn't..
I have to manually make a shortcut, then copy that to the program data or local users windows start menu folder for it to then be pinnable to start via the start menu..
I have Windows 10 Pro which was working fine. Suddenly when I switched on pc once, i found that nothing is happening when I click the start button. I tried many times. Tried restart, nothing works. Also the builtin apps are not starting. The store app was pinned on task bar, it is also showing blank. When I try to open app from search, it tells app cannot start try refresh to fix. Nothing happens on refresh.
View 11 RepliesUpgraded a few days ago - and everything was flawless.
But yesterday - noticed the Windows Store app won't open anymore. It looks "greyed out" in the start menu - and in the all apps area - shows a bar that won't move that appears like it was supposed to upgrade or something.
Tried a few things saw suggested - like removing the cache folder in the user app data folder and also the powershell command. Looks like the system didn't take a Restore Point.
want to switch back to Windows 7. However, my Start menu doesn't work. This proves to be very problematic, because the Settings menu within the Start menu seems to be the only path to reverting back to Windows 7. I've tried a few times to get my start menu back in order to restore Windows 7, but nothing I've tried has worked. Here's what I've tried:
(1) Entering a special command in Windows PowerShell [URL]..... Didn't work.
(2) Creating a new account with administrator privileges. Start menu works, but I can't use it to revert to Windows 7. I'm prompted to delete all other accounts created after the upgrade before reverting back to Windows 7.
(3) Accessing the Settings menu from within the Control Panel. Settings menu doesn't seem to be accessible from the Control Panel.
Is there a way to go back to Windows 7 without using the Start menu? I would rather not have to go find my original product key for Windows 7 and reinstall it, but if that's the only way, so be it.
I've upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 10 Pro. Everything is fine and Windows are working very smooth and nice. But there is one thing that really bothers me: Windows Search (including Cortana) does not find links to programs inside the Start Menu.
Now before you ask, I have re-built the Windows Indexer. Several times. I've also checked to see that .lnk files are being indexed. The Start Menu Folders (inside the c:Program Data and c:users[username]App Data) are both being selected as index locations. Actually, the search is able to find folders inside the Start Menu files, but not the files themselves.
Installed the 10041 iso, ran windows updates and now I have lost my start screen/menu.
View 9 Repliesmy mouse works in every way except inside the start menu. I've also noticed that I can't click on anything after I hit Ctrl + Alt + Del, I had to use the keyboard to open the task manager earlier, but when I got the task manager open, it worked fine. Also, the start menu icons recognize that I am mousing over them - the borders highlight, the mouseover dialog pops up if relevant, but clicking on anything doesn't work.
I am using the Etekcity Scroll Alpha gaming mouse. It's a wired USB mouse.
I ran some commands in the command prompt earlier - "sfc /scannow", something ending in "/restorehealth", and an extremely long PowerShell command. I wish I could be more specific but I can't find the commands again.
I tried looking for updated drivers, everything appears to be up to date. I also ran across a suggestion to update the chipset software, but I can't find anything at all released for Windows 10 and when I ran their utility to find the driver for you, it seemed to confirm that.
I upgraded from Windows 10 a few days ago and until I woke up this morning and woke up my PC from Sleep mode, the start menu worked perfectly. I tried restarting the PC after running the commands I mentioned earlier, problem persisted.
Here's a screenshot of "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialog from a fresh clean install of Windows 10 Pro x64
As you can see, despite its name, it does not have a tab for "Start Menu". I remember that Preview versions of Windows 10 had a "Start Menu" tab. Did they just remove at the last moment? And how I change Start Menu options without that tab?
I've not got the 'Start Menu' tab in my 'Taskbar and Start Menu Properties' control panel (right-click on taskbar). I've seen screenshots on the web, but my Win 10 Pro doesn't have. How can I enable?
View 1 RepliesI removed the Windows Apps (3D Builder, Groovy etc.) using PowerShell and Remove-AppxPackage / Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage on our Windows 10 machines (64bit, some Home, some Pro) at home.
This worked satisfying enough, but for some (very few) local users the start menu entries for those apps are not removed. I refer to "All Apps" (the A-Z list of all apps).
Situation is like this: application is removed (checked with Get-Appxpackage in Powershell)start menu still refers to the Windows Apps with the text entry; it does not show the icon, but a coloured rectangle (sized like an icon)application cannot be started through this icon (as it is uninstalled)
(Screenshot shows the Maps (german: Karten) and Contacts (german: Kontakte) "icons")
I checked the usual places:
C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuC:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms
But of course there are no links to those Windows Apps.
How to remove these orphan "icons" from the start menu (A-Z list)? What makes Windows show those entries in the start menu's A-Z list?
I've successfully upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, everything works like a charm except the context menu on the desktop.
Everytime I make a right click on the desktop, it takes 2-4 minutes for the context menu to show up.
When pressing Start. all of my applications avatar/icons are missing.. suddenly last 2 days

I will be keeping the wireless turned off most of the time on my desktop, as I use it for live pro audio. Is there a registry hack to put the switch in there, even if the computer is not a laptop???

Had problems with Firefox. Tried to download to replace existing Firefox. CNET site appeared to be correct but something seemed wrong so I killed the download. But.
- The windows start menu doesn't come up when I click on the icon, but if I right-click, a text menu does appear and lets me, for example, shut down.
.- If I click on the Windows End icon in the task bar, the screen flashes but End does not come up. Ditto for the Windows Store icon.
- Somewhere SpyBot S&D was erased, but I was able to download it.
- If I double-click on a photo in Windows Explorer, I get a popup that lists the name of the jpeg and says Invalid Entry to Registry. If I right click on the photo and go to any of the options the photo is opened except if I choose Photo.
- Firefox cannot properly display the Yahoo mail page, though Pale Moon and Opera can.
- I have Avast Anti-Virus and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and when I run their scans, they find no issues.
