View 9 RepliesI imported 25 items from IE 11 for my Favorites Bar. 17 is the max number that appears on the horizontal display of the Favorites Bar and 8 appear on the drop down portion below the 'V'. I found that I can drag and move ONLY the ones on the horizontal line to rearrange them, but that does not work on the ones on the drop down. I need to exchange four or five that appear on the drop down with others on the horizontal list to place them where I can easily access those which I use most often. Dragging or clicking doesn't work to move them from one location to the other. How can I rearrange them to the location I prefer?
View 2 RepliesOn my Lenovo Miix 2 I cannot create desktop shortcuts.
View 2 RepliesCan you have different desktops with different SHORTCUTS on each desktops? And can you have desktops saved permanently even after a reboot?
View 3 RepliesI have a number of shortcuts on my desktop that when double-clicked respond with not finding the file using the path displayed. I have even gone to the file that the desktop points to and double-clicked it - with the same result. This has only started with W10 upgrade. However, there are other shortcuts that still work.
View 4 RepliesSome of my website desktop shortcuts have turned "generic".
My default browser is IE11. No, I do not have Chrome, FF installed. I do not like them at all. Least of all is Edge.
I have tried Refresh, clean browser cache including deleting browse history, Reset IE11. None works.
shortcuts don't work on start or taskbar
Just installed Windows 10 - totally successful BUT: no shortcuts/links work in start menu, desktop or taskbar except for links to modern UI apps. Even weirder - shortcuts work if palced in saem directory as the target file/exe but not if then moved elsewhere, like desktop. And even weirder - right clicking a short cut and selecting open or run as administrator don't work, but selecting 'run with graphics card' does work.
I've tried every conceivable setting and nothing works. going crazy. This is installed on a Dell laptop.
Win10 auto updated my pc. Lost files book marks, desktop ,shortcuts.I don't know what else has been lost and I won't know till I hunt for something.
View 3 RepliesNoticed that their shortcuts on the desktop gets rearanched from time to time for no apperant reason? When I had last shutdown, I had a shortcut to Firefox and Excel located just below the "Recycle Bin" which is the second icon down on the left hand side of the screen below the icon for "My Computer".
When I next turned on my computer the shortcut icons had changed order with the shortcut to Excel at the top, followed by "My Computer", Firefox and "Recycle Bin".
Is there a setting in the registry somewhere that preserves the order of the icons?
Since the last win 10 update, my desktop Folder icons do not work right. When I left click I get this
when I right click I get this
The only way I can open a folder (such as Downloads) is to right click, then select open.
I have tried creating new shortcuts and they do not work. Regular program shortcuts work fine. If I create a new short cut to a file, (ie a photo), I have to right click and select OPEN to view the file, then when I create a shortcut, it does not work unless I right click and select open.
I restored system to earlier date and all is well. When restarting computer I get force fed update. Selecting NEW from context menu was not there. I fixed that. Why come I get cmd when I try to open a folder?
I can not access desk top short cuts to open files in office programs. They exist, i can see them on the desk top but do appear when i go to files.
View 2 RepliesI recently performed a clean upgrade from a clean 8.1 Install of Windows Pro. It's connected to a domain and uses Folder Redirection. The search function finds NO programs or start menu shortcuts, desktop etc. When I click the start and start typing, a few things are found, and at the top of the window it says "these results may be incomplete".
I have rebuilt the search, stopped the services, renamed the data folder, and tried a new user profile, and it does the same thing.
Why do desktop icons move around? I know my Surface 2 with Windows RT had the same problem with things shifting around for no good reason.
Anyway, I just had to restart my Surface Pro 4 because the pen decided to stop working -- again -- and re-pairing it didn't correct the problem. So it reboots and when the login screen pops up it's randomly rotated 90 degrees. Why; the thing NEVER moved from landscape position on my desk.
I awkwardly sign in (WITHOUT moving or rotating the computer at all) and once I'm deposited on the desktop again the couple dozen icons I keep there are all jumbled around. Now keep in mind, it's not like my desktop is totally packed with junk, I keep ongoing projects and things like that there for easy access. Icons often get jumbled around when I use the SP4 in tablet mode, which is annoying beyond belief.
I have two benq 27" ips panels connected using displayport 1.2. Sleep is disabled for the computer however the monitors turn off after being idle for 30 minutes. When I wake the monitors from sleep all of the icons have move to different locations on the primary monitor. If any icons are on the secondary monitor they are moved to the primary monitor. This is extremely annoying. If any applications are open the windows get resized and moved around as well.
View 8 RepliesIs there a way to make W10 move an Icon from the Taskbar to the Desktop? I could do this in W8.1 although I was using Start8.
This has become a minor issue with W10 since when I install an update to a program (reinstall a newer version) the "old" Icon in the Taskbar becomes unusable. That would not be a problem EXCEPT on two of my 6 W10 machines the install does not create a new Desktop Icon automatically!?
Also, is it possible to create a Desktop Icon from the All Apps list. I find the "Pin to Start" and "Pin to Taskbar" by right clicking on the program but the "Show Icon on Desktop" feature is not there or at least I can't find it?
How to fix my icon problem. I have icons for certain files - word and excel, that I arrange in convenient places on the desktop. If I edit these then save them, Windows moves them to different places on the desktop. This never used to happen on Windows 7 ...
View 3 RepliesThis seems to be a tedious process of going to the task view, then finding the window and right clicking and sending it to another desktop.
Is there something simpler? I was expecting a right click on the taskbar would give this option, but it does not. Is there a keyboard shortcut perhaps?
Why can't I manually move windows 10 desktop icons? My windows 10 is an upgrade.
View 1 RepliesI upgraded from Win 7 Pro to Win 10. All seemed fine.
Installed the trial version of Stardock Start 10, again all things seemed fine and worked properly.
Then about two weeks ago, I noticed I could not move any of my desktop icons to reposition them on the desktop, I would get a grayed out 'stop' icon when I left clicked on the icon to move it.
Align icons to grid is ticked but not the auto arrange. I tried having both unchecked and still had the 'can't move icons issue'.
I have Tweaking.com installed on my machine for fixing a problem I had in Win 7 and decided to use it with Win 10.
Tweaking recommends you restart in SafeMode, which I do, (icons could be moved in SafeMode by the way) and then it does its thing and when finished I then restart the PC back into normal mode from safe mode (side note, it has gotten stuck in safe mode where you cannot restart in normal mode. Even after going into MSCONFIG and clicking Normal mode it would still restart in Safe mode. Don't know what that is about and after running tweaking again it would finally restart normally).
The problem would seem to be fixed, up until I shut down the system, then when it reboots, I again can't move any icons, and I get the gray 'stop' circle.
I have tried multiple malware/anti virus scans and have not been able to find anything (at least while the PC is running, maybe I need to try using a boot CD and scan then).
Side note, I have noticed that when using Stardock Start 10 to emulate the Windows 7 interface, when you search in programs and files, when you go to select any Windows program (ie create a restore point) it gives you an error message (I'm at work so I don't remember it exactly) like you don't have rights to run the program or a different message of it cannot find the path to the program.
When I first installed Stardock that did not happen and I could open up anything with out issue.
I will try and post screen shots of the 'stop' icon and the error messages when I get home.
I just upgraded my Win 7 X 64 laptop to Win 10 and have the same desktop as on 7. I find I am unable to reposition any of the icons on the desktop like I could on 7. Otherwise the are normal. as they work just like always. I can click them or delete them but not move them. How to reposition the desktop icons on Win 10 Pro?

Right so, I have been trying to create application shortcuts in the "all apps" of the start menu. I've had success with some shortcuts. Here is a screenshot, with an example of what I am talking. The following shortcuts are behaving as I want them to,The following shortcut is not behaving as I want it to.. it keeps pinning to start despite all my attempts to unpin it and recopy to the folder, they are all shortcuts to executable files. Why is windows handling some of them differently?
I move the icos to where I want them but as soon as I refresjh the Desktop they go to the left in an unordered fashion.
Now, I want to go back to 8.1 but would like to know if I can migrate back to Windows 10 in the future when all the bugs are sorted out.
I'm not at home with access to Windows 10. Does this still works with Windows 10?
View 5 RepliesI'm about to build my first desktop, and I have a laptop with Windows 10 (upgraded from 7 which it came with). I don't plan on using the laptop anymore, so is it possible to install the laptop's hard drive into the desktop then move the Windows install to an SSD? If not, should I just buy a Win10 key or would it be possible to contact Microsoft about transferring the OS over?

I can't find where the shortcuts are (most of them), even with this tutorial "All apps in Start menu - Add or Remove Items in Windows 10".
I'm trying to customize the "All apps" menu. In C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms I created a folder 'Utilities' and in it two folders (folderA and folderB with shortcuts in them. When I open Utilities in the "All Apps" menu I cannot see folderA or folderB and alll the shortcuts in those two folders are stacked together under the Utilities heading. What have I missed here? I'm trying to create a hierarchic menu structure and I read somewhere that this is the way to do it.
