I can't open some of the PDF ffiles on my client's server. an error message come on stating that the ' file name is too long'. I can open other files with short name without any problem. I have tried to copy and paste the file on my desktop so I can rename the file but without success. Also tried to right click on the file and open it with fox-it or MS PDF reader but this did't work either. if tried to rename the file or open it with another software the page goes simply closed and and desktop opened.
I'm trying to copy a ripped movie file (iso) from my G drive to desktop. The file is 45GB. It gets to 99% then a message comes up saying the process can't complete because the System has the file open. I have nothing running and can't find anything where the System is accessing/linking to this file.
I thought it might be a permissions issue, so I wanted to download the Reg edit to add a "take ownership" command but the TenFourms link is not working. Take Ownership - Add to Context Menu in Windows 10 <<<< won't open web page.
I ran sfc /scannow and there are some errors reported that could not be fixed. There is a CBS.log file but I have not looked at it yet.
I also ran the DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (I forget the full command line now) and it came back saying it could not find the files "online".
I want to delete a folder on my second hdd because i'm cleaning everything up but there are files inside it which have a too long name... I already tried things like trying to delete the folder manually with CMD.exe and a program called Total Commander but it just won't work. It keeps telling me I can't delete it because it has a too long files name. The files inside the folder are AECACHE-files which are from Adobe After Effects. I'm on a 64-bit version of Windows 10 by the way.
I just upgraded to windows 10 and one of the things that bugs me is the file explorer on task bar load very slow. It takes around 1 seconds to load if I click on the explorer on task bar. However, if I use the win+E button the explorer open instantly.
I tried to create shortcut from the file explorer exe in windows folder and the time it take to load is about the same with loading on task bar.
Quite often (60% of the time) clicking on Windows Explorer results in no action whether from the tool bar or from the Windows screen for a very long period of time. There is nothing showing to determine if there is a background program causing Explorer to wait. When it eventually opens, more than one screen comes up because the impatient among us have clicked more than once (personal problem). I often start by going to Explorer for a file I was working on so this is a real pain.
Can a file folder open it it's own window all by itself without any of the drive's other folder structure showing? I have certain folders I must refer to frequently and I'd like to create a shortcut which would pop one open in a new window without having to wade through the whole drive's folder structure. This was normal on my last pc running XP but I can't seem to duplicate in Win10.
How do I get File Explorer to open in the last used folder? NOT quick access, just in the normal list of directories. (file folders).. I hate 'quick access', it slows everything down so much and makes all other folders invisible - I just want the normal file list visible and file explorer to open in the same folder as I was using before, in that list. Is this at all possible?
I have windows 10 and somehow mobi files are opening with notepad. Of course they do not read in there but I have a free ebook site in which I want to know if they too have to open with notepad. I managed to repair the extension but not the icon. Can that be done? Also it really annoys me that it appears on the default menu and matched up to notepad there and that also cannot be changed . Is there a registry tweak I can apply to get it back to the way it was?
I have Windows 10 media on a flash drive, and I was going to load it onto my other laptop that had no OS on it. I got to a screen that had said "Setup is Starting". Then, a box popped up saying," Windows cannot open the required file D:Sourcesinstall.wim. Make sure all files required for installation are available", I checked and the file is there, but I can't continue with the installation.
When i click on a file in file explorer after upgrading to Windows 10, it says: Windows cannot find 'C:UsersConnemara GraniteDesktop, How do I fix this?
On every computer I've installed Windows 10 on (a dozen+) despite me setting all my default file types and applications, the first time a specific file type in opened, it still asks if I want to use this program. I've attached a picture of the first time I'm trying to open a MOV file.
Like I said, I've already specified that it should open with VLC, but it still asks anyways. I've tried this through Settings and Control Panel but it still doesn't work.
In the picture it does say iTunes is a new application, which I know would probably make this happen, but even without a new application being installed after setting my default file types, it still happens. Once I get through this screen it won't ever come up for MOV files again, but it will if I opened an MP4, and nearly any other file type on the computer. It doesn't usually happen with anything besides media files, but ANY picture; movie or audio file will do this (among several random others). This happens on EVERY Windows 10 I install, and I'm tired of having to keep two dozen dummy files and opening them all to disable this message on each computer. Is their a way I can prevent this message from coming up.
I was looking through a file within the file called" Windows8 OS".
The file was called "Microsoft.SqlServer.Compact.400.32" and it was a "LFL" file type. In trying to open it I inadvertently changed it to a "BC" file type.
Question, how do I change it back to it's original file type?
Second question, since it was in a windows 8 OS file does it matter or is it still relevant in my Windows 10 OS ?
I am trying to make a batch file that will run multiple programs at once.
No matter what I do I can't get a batch file to open anything. I have tried a wide variety of programs and command formats. In every instance, the CMD window flashes on screen, and will not stay open even if I end my batch with "Pause".
I even checked Window's file extensions (per another thread on here) to ensure that batch files are properly unassociated.
After trying a wide variety of things, I have stripped my test batch file down to this code:
@echo off
START C:WindowsNOTEPAD.EXE
pause
Why I can't get this to work. Oh, and yes I have tried running the batch file as administrator.
I had written and saved the text in Word and then changed the file type to .bat. Creating it in Notepad totally fixed that issue.
I Just received my new desktop PC a few days ago with a clean windows 10 install. After just a 2-3 days im suddenly unable to open any folders/file explorer.
Yesterday I formatted and reinstalled windows. And after just 10-12 hours I can no longer open any folders, again.
I have recorded a video of how it looks: [URL] ....
As you can see the screen flashes briefly and then all the icons rearrange on the desktop.
I'm used to working with quite a few libraries in W8.1 and would like file explorer in W10 to directly go to the libraries view if possible rather than the 'quick access' screen.
I have a desktop running with a few apps 24/7 feeding to a network, on the rare occasion it drops or restarts due to some update or power outage I thought I could write a simple batchfile just to restart everything automatically.
Problem is 1 app refuses to start, the app itself is in c:program files (x86) and that seems to be the issue. Error message I get is "cannot find c:program"
About a week ago Windows 10 started working in an abnormal manner on my PC: I wasn't able to open File Explorer or Control Panel, whether from the start menu or from basically any application that calls for those (file explorer or control panel).
I tried running command prompt (admin) sfc /scannow, DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth commands several times but that doesn't fix the problem at all. As a last resort I downloaded a brand new Windows 10 ISO file from the Microsoft site and performed a clean installation formatting my HDD. Things were OK the first minutes, but then the problem starts again with the each new installation of Windows. I don't know what is causing File Explorer and control panel to crash, maybe its a faulty driver or windows update itself. I have installed Windows 10 from that ISO file several times and every time after a few minutes of me doing nothing with the computer, it fails again.
The first driver I update to be able to use my monitor is the nVidia driver (361.43).
So, I was lucky enough to get a new monitor and new pc the other day; a dell xps 8700, and for purposes of this discussion, the video card set up is a intel hd graphics 4600 board, and a Nvidia GTX745, with 4 gigs of ram. The monitor is a 4k capable monitor, and to get the full res, its plugged in via a display port connector, into the intel board, since the nvidia card does NOT have a display port connector, only hdmi, which would limit the res to 1920x1080.
Problem is, ever since connecting it, for some crazy reason, I can NOT get my control panel to open, my file explorer to open, or adjust some of my desktop properties...EVERYTHING else works great, but those things no longer work..
Weird thing is, if I downres to 1920x1080, I can get the file explorer to work, but thats about it..
I ended up downloading MulitCommander Pro, which is an alternative file manager, and it works just fine. I am on windows version 10547, Home version..
All these things worked perfectly with my old monitor, connected via hdmi@1920x1080, so I dont think anything serious is wrong, but I cant figure out why these built in windows core items wont open up when the res is at 3840X2160.
if it is possible to change a open with option back to unknown application on some files. i accidentally clicked open with the picture opener and its stuck on it now. how can i revert this?
I downloaded a .lua file and it asked me what do i want it to open with. I exited out and it still made all my .lua files a photoshop file. I have tried alot from setting default to trying to revert my pc 2 day backs still nothing. I know the default program is suppose to be called "Unknown application" but cant get it back. Here is a photo incase i didnt explain it well Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet
Outlook & Excel 2013 (not 365) cannot open emailed excel file after windows 10 upgrade. states file is corrupt cannot open. worked fine before. Had another open same file on their windows 7 it worked fine. I can open excel files that are already in my computer
Click on file generates an OPEN WITH window - eg an .xlsx file shows Excel as main option If I check 'always open with this app' & then OK - nothing happens
