I'm having problems using the search on windows 10 being on a local account. I don't want to be signed in, but it's forcing me to or I can't search or properly see the start menu. I guess it was dumb of me to click next on the search feature but I didn't think it would always ask me to sign in. Is there anyway to disable this?
View 5 RepliesNow I have Win 10 I have to sign in every time I start and after any updates are installed and the restart. I didn't need this on XP nor Win 7 and not now on Win 10. I supposed I made a mistake on the Win 10 update setting it up - perhaps I could have skipped that part.
View 6 RepliesSo on my dell xps 13 that I just put windows 10 on, I'm looking for a way to have the icons rescale to the correct size when changing displays without signing out? For example, I'll have it plugged into my monitor, then unplug the laptop to use it, and when the laptop screen turn's back on everything on the desktop is supper small. A sign out and in fixes this, but that's less then ideal.

Recently I am not able to sign-in to my local account, when i enter the user password, the welcome screen appears and after that signing-out screen appears and takes me again to the user login screen.
View 1 RepliesAfter signing on and Windows 10 homepage loads, shortly after that the page flashes and is gone. It reloads and 30 seconds later it will flash again, on and off continually. Loaded Windows 10 24 hours earlier, the system was okay until early in the evening after a reboot. Now all reboots are the same. Lucky enough at one point I was able to get on the internet, but I can't get to my settings to find a fix.
View 2 RepliesWhen signing out of windows 10 this week I noticed a message that appeared for a few seconds, telling me that an app was preventing signing out. The title of the app in question was expressed in what appear to be Chinese symbols. See attached photos of the message.I have never before seen an app or program like this(ie one with chinese symbols) and am concerned that it is something malicious such as spyware. I searched for this app on both task manager and on the program list (accessed via control panel), but couldn't find it, which makes me more suspicious - this could mean it is deliberately hidden, or simply that I am looking in the wrong place!For what it is worth, my McAfee subscription is up to date. Have just run a full scan - no issues detected.

(1) What are the benefits and disadvantages of using a Microsoft account?
(2) Is signing in with Microsoft account safe regarding security of my PC? How much beneficial it is regarding keeping my PC safe?
(3) Suppose, my internet connection is off. Then also, would I be able to start up Windows using Microsoft account password? I know though, that I would not be able to use any online facilities then.
Recently upgraded my Toshiba Satellite NB 10A-laptop from Windows 8.1 to Win 10 and have been logging in via my Hotmail account. Went to settings to set up Local Account, completed the password settings. Then had the choice to Sign Off or Cancel. Chose Sign Off (thinking Cancel would void my new Local Account) and now, for many hours, my laptop is locked into an endless loop of Signing Off.

View 9 RepliesI have several user accounts on one machine under Windows 10. I would like to re-log-into these user accounts when the machine reboots from an update or from an extended (longer than UPS hold-up) power failure.
I use Thunderbird and have a lot of junk filtering going on which protects my phone from most spam.
I will be moving my two sons to Dropbox and back their stuff up to my NAS units continuously rather than intermittently.
For these accounts, I want the users' accounts to boot when the machine boots so that Dropbox is making a copy to the local HDD. The NAS units take it from there (final sync method TBD).
In no instance do I want a "live" console.
After I automatically log into the accounts, I want the machine left as if I had hit "switch user" after logging into each account--several accounts active and running, but the console waiting for a login.
I have been testing this in principal where I copy images from a friend's Dropbox to her Google Drive and to my NAS units. Right now I have to manually log into the account that does this after each reboot.
For my account, I also wish to start Thunderbird as well as log in. I assume just adding Thunderbird to the StartUp group will work?

I am in the process of bringing 20 machines from W7 and W8.1 to W10. Seven down, thirteen to go. five of the twenty are W8.1, the rest W7.
When I open up the start menu it shows "We are getting search ready" forever. Worked until when I started my computer up today. I have attached a screenshot of this.
View 4 RepliesWin 10 Enterprise. Worked fine for a couple of days, but now I cannot seem to bring up the start menu and start typing anything. It will not search. I also tried in the search box or spyglass... I just click on it and nothing happens. It is a major inconvenience. I don't want to do a restore and keep my files, because there is a HUGE list of applications I will then need to restore. I also tried to click on Cortana, but clicking the app does nothing, doesn't even bring it up.
I tried re-indexing search items, I tried the search troubleshooter. I have rebooted, I have installed all updates. Someone on another forum said kill the Cortana task... well there isn't one running.
I Just bought a new XPS 13 (lowest end model) that came with Microsoft 10 pre-installed (bought it from Microsoft store). my problem is that I cannot search for settings in the main search bar or even the settings search bar, the settings search bar simply doesn't work at all, and to double check that this wasn't a windows 10 issue I tried it out on a friend's Laptop and it worked fine. I took screenshots of both my Laptop and my friend's.

I run my W10 computer using a local account. I want to avoid using a MS account and don't have one set up one the computer at this time. My local account is the only account.
That being said, I was interested in installing a couple of apps from the app store. However, it is requiring that I log in with my MS account to download and install them.
My question is if I log into the MS account to download and install the apps, will that create a new user account of any kind or otherwise mess with my computer settings or user accounts?
Sometimes when I boot my PC I cannot search in the Search Bar, I have to restart the system then it usually works fine again until the next reboot.I have decided to rebuild the index to just the things I use regularly (I know how to navigate through the system so I don't usually need to search for much, it's purely ease).
These are the things which have been excluded: $SysReset; AMD; Fraps; history; inetpub; Intel; MSOCache; NPE; Perflogs; Program Files (x64); Program Files; ProgramData; Appdata; Appdata; WindowsIt has currently (after 1 hour) indexed 4,000 items. Do any of these things need to be indexed, Program Files for example? If they do not need to be then I probably will exclude them.
It is not there when I click on the Start Button, even if I enlarge the resultant display vertically. I see, for example a Most Used list, then a few other entries which end at "All Apps," with no search box below that.

My problem is when I select the search on the taskbar it only searches the C drive how will I set it to search the other internal drive??.Windows 10.
Computer: HP Elite 8000 C2D E8400 Win 10 64 Bit 4GB RAM .Windows 10 upgrade from Win7 installed. Have installed Office 10 and Chrome. Microsoft edge default browser.
Problem: When I click the "Search the web and Windows " box I get "We can't connect to web search right now but you can still search your stuff. Make sure you are currently connected to the internet."
I am connected to the internet and if I type a "web question" into the box it opens Edge and give me the answer. Edge stopped working so I reset it with "Reset_Microsoft_Edge" from this forum, now it is working again, but I have this new problem.
Having migrated from Windows 7 to Windows 10, I now find that I cannot search for files. I select "This PC", type "bpextract.dat" in the search box, press enter and nothing happens.
View 9 RepliesI'm not tech savvy nor do I pretend to understand much of the content in this forum; however, I'm trying really hard to like Windows 10 (Edge) and think I'm missing something. I came from Win7 and have spent the last three days using Windows 10. I do a lot of research and loved the fact I could highlight a word or phrase, RC on search "Google" and have instant results. In addition, if I wanted to save something to the desktop....RC and save to desktop...very simple. Am I correct in thinking I now need several convoluted steps to get the same things done if I can do them at all? I know I can use a different search engine and get the job done but Edge is reputed to be faster.

I cannot search files like I did before; it does not work in the same way and I cannot find the files I need like I did before!
Formally, I used to type for example "contract in the search cell and all the contract files and sub folders in the open folder would have appeared; not anymore, why?
I have updated to Windows 10 and all went well. Looks great.
However, since yesterday, I have not been able to type in the search bar. One clicks the mag glass or search box but nothing happens.
I tried, such as:
SFC/scannow
Windows powershell key "Get -AppXPacjkage -Allusers......."
DSIM /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth......"
Checked for any more Windows updates
None of this worked.
I then created a new user to find that it works with a new profile. It seems we are at the mercy of a user profile that could become corrupt at any moment and the only solution is to create another user.
I'm talking about pressing <Windows> and typing in a shortcut name that lives in C:Users<name>AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms.
Simply put, it doesn't find the shortcut. And I don't feel like rebuilding the entire index, since I doubt it will solve the problem. This was broken on 7, 8.1, and now 10. You'd think they could index a particular set of files from a particular folder.
In Win 7, one clicked on Start and you could then search for any file in your entire computer by entering its name (or part of it's name) in the file search box. In Win 10, you have to ask Cortana who won't locate a file for you. Where has the file search box covering all data files on the computer moved to?

View 2 RepliesWin 10 search is not working. I did get it to work by signing in as a local account and than back to signing in with a microsoft account. After a reboot it works. I wonder if it has something to do with Cortrana?
