View 8 RepliesHow to unpin the search & task view from the taskbar? They take valuable space in the taskbar while they can easily be triggered with windows key shortcuts.
View 2 RepliesWhen I was using windows 7 , I was able to delete an item from startup list ( MsConfig-Startup), using this Registry path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftShared ToolsMSConfigstartupreg
But on windows 10 there's no a such path.
( I don't want to disable , but to completely remove from Task Manager - Startup )
Opening apps is generally more sluggish lately with Windows 10 so I decided to turn off some background stuff via Task Manager. It works but the next time I start up they are all back on. How to turn off permanently? Also, I have some NVidia drivers from an old graphics card. I now use ATI. I can not turn those drivers off or delete the apps.
View 2 RepliesI was just working with my Task Manager startup items and noticed there are several items that have numbers in parenthesis next to them. What do those numbers mean? Are those numbers telling me I need to do something, as in are they registering any sort of "alert" message?
View 3 RepliesI'm not getting any error messages on boot up, but the start menu doesn't work and my task bar contains only the start menu, cortana, task view and an icon for no new messages. No clock, none of my programs or even edge. If I hadn't put some of my programs from the taskbar in a folder on the desktop, I'd have a hard time getting to them.
I've rebooted 4 or 5 times since this started on Wednesday and tried the critical error fix of holding down the F8 while rebooting and nothing has worked. I've been running win10 since August and have had the critical error message a few times, but have always been able to clear it before.
I have upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. I had problems going into and out of sleep mode which seem have been resolved by installing updates for Intel Graphics. Now I can't get anything to come up when I left click on the Start button. All of the other icons in the task bar will only work with a left click of the mouse, nothing happens with a right click. Also, I did not get Cortana when I upgraded to Windows 10 on this device. I also upgraded another lap top and have Cortana on that one. With all of these problems occurring one after the other, can I reinstall Windows 10?

Here's a gif of what (doesn't) happen
I just noticed today that I am unable to right click on an item on the taskbar making it not possible to pin or unpin.
View 2 RepliesI've just upgraded to windows 10 from windows 8.1 and I'm experiencing a glitch: when I try an pin or unpin things (e.g. from the start menu or quick access menu in explorer) the icons don't move.
However in the context menu the text that said "Unpin from start" or "Unpin from quick access" changes to "Pin to start" or "Pin to quick access respectively".
I've tried doing a sfc /scannow in an elevated command prompt but it showed no errors and has made no difference.
The same thing happens when I try to uninstall apps, they don't move.
I'm a minimalist, preferring not to clutter up my screen with all kinds of icons, etc.
I used to have Cortana hidden off screen, but still able to respond to me if I said; "Hey, Cortana."
Now, recently, the icon has popped up on my taskbar, and when I go to change it, hide it, etc. I only get the options of "Show App Icons" "Show All Notification Icons" and "Show Touch Keyboard Button"
I want to use Cortana, but cut down on all of the icons on my desktop screen. I don't think it was this way before the recent W10 update.
I reinstalled windows 10 on my laptop and after that the pin/unpin options is missing from the context menu (right click) to pin/unpin tiles from the startmenu.
View 9 RepliesDid the Win 10 update last night. Now I can't run my pinned Excel files ("The item you selected is unavailable. It might have been moved, renamed, or removed. Do you want to remove it from the list?") But when I say Yes, it's not removed. If I click the icon for "Unpin from this list" it is also not removed. If I right click the item on the Pinned list and click "Unpin from this list" it is not removed. If I drag the file from its folder down to the icon ("Pin to Microsoft Excel") nothing changes.
The update apparently changed the locations of all the pinned files from my nonstandard location (D:DropboxCurrent where D is my Data drive) to elsewhere (C:UsersDaveDocumentsDropboxCurrent, which location does not exist). I can't figure out how to change this. The pinned list seems to be somehow locked so I can't change it, and this is the essence of the problem.
I've upgraded from Windows 8.1 (x64) and I wanted to change my start menu tiles since I had a start menu as opposed to the start screen. Naturally, I tried right-clicking the tiles that were present and unpinning them from the start menu, but the option doesn't show up! If I try and right-click shortcuts, executable files, or menu items for programs the option to pin the item to the start menu doesn't show up.
I can pin things to my taskbar easily, but I can't pin it to start at all! I'm currently running Windows 10 Build 10240 on a 64-bit Intel i7-4500U (Dual-Core) @ 2Ghz with 8GB RAM and Intel Integrated GPU.
I've searched everywhere, and even uninstalled Cortana from Windows Features.. It's no longer running.. but i can't figure out how to unpin it from the Start Menu.
FYI: Removing hidden Windows Features:
- you'll need win6x_registry_tweak from MSFN or here's a mirror.
- you can remove Windows Defender, Adobe Flash, Search, Indexer, HyperV, etc.. completely
Available commands:
Code:
install_wim_tweak.exe /o /l
- list all packages
Code:
install_wim_tweak.exe /o /c **PACKAGE** /r
- remove package
I love Windows 10. I really do. Every time I right-click a tile, select something such as "Unpin from Start," absolutely nothing happens. The tile remains, I can reshape it, move it, just like before. I can even open it from the Start menu. When I right click the tile again, I see "Pin to Start," even though it's already there.
The thing is, when I restart my computer, all the changes have been made. Basically what I've learned is that every time I want to re-do my Start Menu, I have to restart the computer multiple times.
I had reserved my free Windows 10 upgrade for my 2-in-1 Dell Inspiron 13 7000 laptop. However, even though the application said my notification was coming, I couldn't wait. I downloaded the operating system from the Microsoft website before I received my notification. Does this premature download have anything to do with it?
This only happens with the options "Unpin from Start" and "Pin to Start."
I would like to automatize cleaning the Windows 10's start menu from all these default pinned apps that I'm not using. I don't want to remove apps, only unpin from from start.
I tried to google, but didn't find any. There seems to be no command to pin and unpin apps in start menu. Any alternative methods? The information about the configuration of start menu must be stored somewhere....
My PC has decided to not show up my taskbar items today! The only icons are: Start button, cortana, task view and the notification center. The thing is that none of these will open and all my other icons are gone, even the date and time. I have tried to restart my pc and explorer.exe with no luck, and when i try customizing the taskbar i get an error saying there is no default control panel.
View 3 RepliesBuild 10061, clean install. Had issues with Start Menu and Search not working at all but disabling Radeon Mobile GPU and switchable graphics in BIOS, using the onboard Intel HD GPU only they both work now without any other issues than the one mentioned in the title: I simply cannot pin anything to Start.
The option is there when I right click any Start Menu item, it's just that nothing happens when I select it:
Pinning to Taskbar works but the items cannot be pinned to Start. The Start layout reset as told in this tutorial does not fix the issue. I was suspecting my relocated Users folder might have something to do with this (I have sysprepped Users to E:) but I am quite sure this is not the culprit because I do the same on all my Windows installs and all other machines, both physical and virtual work as they should.
One of the benefits of Windows10 that returned back from Windows7 is the Recent Menus.
Unfortunately, this feature is associated with the "Most Used" section in the Start Menu.
As most users, I used Office application frequently, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
Word disappeared from the menu without reason, I would like to add it back. How can I do this?
I know that I can remove some items from the menu, but how can I add some items to this menu?
After the final release of Windows10, I realized that editing this menu is no longer possible! They even do not allow adding any item to the "Most Used" menu if they are pinned to the start menu!!! So I removed all office items from the start menu pin to allow them to be included in the "Most Used" and gain the recent facility, but no luck for Word.
My machine runs Windows 10 Pro 64-bit operating system. Yet when I open Task manager, I see 32-bit stuff on there. Does the 32 bit stuff slow down the machine and as this is a 64 bit machine are they relevant, and can they (the 32-bit programs) be upgraded or deleted.
View 1 RepliesWhen I try to place my recycle bin on the bottom row it just moves one row up. I didn't had this issue before.
I did a system restore and it was on the bottom row for a couple of seconds and suddenly it moved up.
I can place it on the bottom row if I change the text size to 100%, but that's too small. Is there any other way?
Start, Search items won't open from the taskbar. Clicking on Start or search results in the busy icon showing for less that a second and nothing else happens!
Tried restarting explorer - no joy.
In the documents folder I have a folder called my tournament games
In that folder I have my chess tournament games
I cannot find how to manually set the order myself
I want to put them in order by dragging and dropping or whatever way is available, so far I have not been able to do so.
Is there any way to reduce the list of what comes up when you click the start button? All those icons to the right are not needed all of the time and it would be nice to disable or hide them from sight so we just get the important info on the LHS such as power button and program lists.
View 10 RepliesUNPIN UNWANTED ICONS FROM TASK BAR I just upgraded two systems to Win 10 this weekend but am having trouble finding out how to remove unwanted icons from the task bar.
DesktopDownloadsPicturesDocumentsMusic
These take up space I prefer to use for desired icons. I don't need or want them there but there is no "un-pin" option for those. I have searched and all I can find are results to hide the entire task bar or instructions on how to add to the taskbar but not a word on how to remove those unwanted items.
I would also like to know how I can un-pin one specific drive which is encrypted so it is not available on taskbar...it always wants me to format it! Better to hide from taskbar. Still needs to remain visible to encryption program of course.
