Aug 9, 2015The tiles I've put on the start page for various apps (all resized to small) and arranged in groups are rearranging themselves randomly and resizing to medium each time I reboot. I can't find any reason for this. Also, is it possible to start more than one app at a time using the tiles? I've tried searching here and using Google but nothing at all comes up.. It's a clean install after upgrading.

Feb 10, 2016I would like to refresh start menu icons in Windows 10 and haven't been able to find any info about it. These is the rebuild icon cache thread but that method works only for the desktop and explorer icons - not for the start menu icons (tiles).
I have many portable programs that I run off my USB stick and I've placed tiles for them in my start menu. Most often there are not problems with them and even if I start Windows without the stick the icons are intact. However, from time to time (after some windows updates or unexpected system shut down) the icon cache gets wiped out and the icons are gone - I can see the tiles with some generic icon instead of the programs' icons. I would like to clear this cache so that Windows rebuilds the icons when my USB stick is inserted.
So far I have discovered that resizing the tiles refreshes the icon as well - so this is at least some partial workaround - not ideal because I have to do it one by one for each tile. Can I refresh all the tiles in one go?

Oct 10, 2015I have reported it (and others) on the Nvidia forums. Doesn't seem to happen for light gaming for 5 minutes or so (and of course won't happen after playing solitaire) but after heavy gaming (Battlefield Hardline, the free Star Wars beta) for 30 minutes or so, after exiting most of the start menu is often blank. Takes a reboot to get it back.
I do not believe it's corruption issues on my OS or hardware issues. Things I've done:
1) SFC/scannow no issues
2) Ran this "Get-appxpackage -all *shellexperience* -packagetype bundle |% {add-appxpackage -register -disabledevelopmentmode ($_.installlocation + "appxmetadataappxbundlemanifest.xml")} to reregister icons.
3) Did a rebuild of the icon cache
4) Did extensive memory tests - all passed.
5) Turned off "game mode" in Antivirus
Classic Shell Start Button?
Apr 13, 2015Available free online, the Classic Shell Start Button corrected Windows 8's most glaring fault by giving you an excellent free Start Button. One of my Windows 10 laptops still has it.
You can still press the Windows key (bottom left corner, between the Ctrl and Alt keys) to get the Windows 10 Start Button.
Classic Shell works well with Windows 10 and is a possible last resort if you can't get the Windows 10 Start Button to work.

Feb 10, 2016I have windows 10 home operating system on my laptop.I have a problem with my file folder. when I first open it it shows that it works fine.However I've notice that on the left I see the OS and D drive as white icons. When i access any folders and then go back to the home file page it looks like this: and when i access other files they show empty folders (this is the program files folders)but i know this folders have files in them. ie: Gmail is " G", American Airlines is " A", Flyertalk is " F". Google is " G" (causing confusion with Gmail.), etc.

Nov 1, 2015I'm fairly new to Windows 10 and everything is going well except for pinning programs to the start menu. Here are three programs giving me issues with this:
FastStone Image Viewer
Hyper-V Manager
Microsoft Movie Maker
I am able to run the programs if I go find them in Program Files, and I've created shortcuts to them on my desktop and in the task bar. However, they do not show up in the list of All Apps, and they don't turn up in a search from the search bar. I've added them to ...AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms and rebooted, and it did not add them to the Apps.

Aug 4, 2015Win 10 installation went smoothly and yes it runs faster than Win 7 Ultimate..BUT.......I do not like the Start Page with its apps and stuff I don't need.
What I do need is a start menu with all my programs so I can get back to work.

Jan 12, 2016I have a Surface Pro3 which came with win10 installed (unlike my other SP3 which I upgraded to W10). I just decided to customize my start menu a bit with some live tiles re-arrangement.
Problem: I can't seem to pin or unpin apps to the tiles section of the start menu. When I right-click (or touch-hold) and select "pin to start" it shows as pinned (in that the option then becomes to unpin) but the tile never shows up with the other tiles.
Likewise, I can't remove any tiles that are already there.

Mar 5, 2016Im trying to sort out a problem, recently I noticed that I cant add tiles to the start menu, I cant delete ones already there, I cant move them where I want them to be and that the *context* menu that appears when I right click on the tiles already pinned to the start menu only contains the work "more" with an arrow that opens a sub menu giving me a few options but nothing about unpinning from the start menu or choosing the size of the tile, I am given the option to pin to the taskbar (ive tried it and that does work). Searching for answers in the forum I came across one called "cannot move start menu tiles".
As a last resort and one I was sure would sort the problem out, and that was to perform an upgrade repair. Well it made no difference to my start menu tiles. I have windows 10 loaded on an older hp laptop (cq57) and the whole process took slightly more that 6 hours to complete. Since I don't often customise my start menu tiles I cant say when the problem began and therefore narrow the cause down to a conflict with an installed program or something else. I do remember that about a month ago that my pc took a long time to shut down but no error messages popped up and it did eventually shut down. I also remember that suddenly my Microsoft office outlook 2016 started freezing when I used the program to create a new email or when I replied to an email I received.
In trying to sort out that problem I think I may have caused this start menu tile problem, I read somewhere on the internet that I needed to belong to a special group of administrators to perform one of the things I had to do. It didn't change anything after I joined this special group so I uninstalled ms office and then reinstalled it and the new email, reply to an email was working fine. That's when I noticed the start menu tile problem and that was about a month ago. One thing I read somewhere that I need to modify an administrator template.
Can Have Three Groups Of Start Menu Tiles Next To Each Other
Aug 15, 2015At the moment windows seems to allow only two groups of tiles to be next to each other horizontally. If a third fourth or fifth group is added they are dropped below the first two groups.
Is it possible to have three groups of tiles (Group size - 3 medium tiles next to each other) next to each other in the start menu?
I have already tried the full screen start menu which does not solve the issue either.

"Some settings are managed by your organization" under the Personalization/Start tab.
I can't edit ANY of them despite doing so just after updating and it's really starting to annoy me.
