Cannot Open Desktop Icons Or Create Valid Shortcuts
Feb 10, 2016
Since the last win 10 update, my desktop Folder icons do not work right. When I left click I get this
when I right click I get this
The only way I can open a folder (such as Downloads) is to right click, then select open.
I have tried creating new shortcuts and they do not work. Regular program shortcuts work fine. If I create a new short cut to a file, (ie a photo), I have to right click and select OPEN to view the file, then when I create a shortcut, it does not work unless I right click and select open.
I restored system to earlier date and all is well. When restarting computer I get force fed update. Selecting NEW from context menu was not there. I fixed that. Why come I get cmd when I try to open a folder?
Noticed that their shortcuts on the desktop gets rearanched from time to time for no apperant reason? When I had last shutdown, I had a shortcut to Firefox and Excel located just below the "Recycle Bin" which is the second icon down on the left hand side of the screen below the icon for "My Computer".
When I next turned on my computer the shortcut icons had changed order with the shortcut to Excel at the top, followed by "My Computer", Firefox and "Recycle Bin".
Is there a setting in the registry somewhere that preserves the order of the icons?
Creating a desktop icon with Win 8 was VERY EASY. No so, with Win 10.I'm a senior who doesn't grasp things as I once did so I NEED a 'simple' method to create a desktop icon from any site that I happen to be on.
for some reason all my Icons for everything but folders have gone blank I can't seem to get them back. As well as all my file and program associations have eather reset and ask me what programs I want to use a default and when I reassign them the next time I go to open a file of the same type the association seems to dissapear again and ask what progam I want to use again... This seemed to happen after Windows 10 auto updated last...
See pic below of my desktop (note the Virtual DJ icon I just istalled that not 10 mins ago and it is blank as well) and windows explorer with blank 'page' icons but if I use the Open file dialouge page in Firefox or Chrome the icons show up....
Would it be possible to get copies of the cool icons you use on your Windows TenForums tutorial pages? Example: the disk drive with the reverse circle for system restore.
Just upgraded to windows 10 and on 7 I was using Ultramon, a super awesome multi-monitor program. Needless to say, ultramon doesn't work on 10 but 10 has some pretty great multi-monitor functionality already.
I've got two monitors and I have taskbar shown on both and buttons are set to show on taskbar where the window is open. What I'm trying to do is hide the Start Menu, Cortana search, and task view buttons on the non-primary monitor taskbar.
Also, I'm wondering if it's possible to change the Windows keyboard shortcuts? Trying to change the shortcut for switching between desktops to something other than Ctrl + Win + (Left/Right)
After I install an application and it creates a shortcut on the desktop, I can't move the shortcut to another position. When I try to move it, I get a small slashed circle.
I have a number of shortcuts on my desktop that when double-clicked respond with not finding the file using the path displayed. I have even gone to the file that the desktop points to and double-clicked it - with the same result. This has only started with W10 upgrade. However, there are other shortcuts that still work.
Just installed Windows 10 - totally successful BUT: no shortcuts/links work in start menu, desktop or taskbar except for links to modern UI apps. Even weirder - shortcuts work if palced in saem directory as the target file/exe but not if then moved elsewhere, like desktop. And even weirder - right clicking a short cut and selecting open or run as administrator don't work, but selecting 'run with graphics card' does work.
I've tried every conceivable setting and nothing works. going crazy. This is installed on a Dell laptop.
I recently performed a clean upgrade from a clean 8.1 Install of Windows Pro. It's connected to a domain and uses Folder Redirection. The search function finds NO programs or start menu shortcuts, desktop etc. When I click the start and start typing, a few things are found, and at the top of the window it says "these results may be incomplete".
I have rebuilt the search, stopped the services, renamed the data folder, and tried a new user profile, and it does the same thing.
Running Windows 10 on a Dell Venue 8 pro Tablet. Several months ago, and just yesterday I lost my desktop. Turned on the Tablet went to the desktop picture after signing in and ... nothing. No live panels, no desktop icons, the action center would not appear. Just the desktop picture. If I tapped on the picture, the icons would appear for a split second. Anything pinned to the bar along the bottom would work. I was able to get to system restore and restore to a couple of days ago. That worked. What happened. Don't really know how to fix other than system restore.
Folders in question --C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms --C:UsersRitaAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms
Right so, I have been trying to create application shortcuts in the "all apps" of the start menu. I've had success with some shortcuts. Here is a screenshot, with an example of what I am talking. The following shortcuts are behaving as I want them to,The following shortcut is not behaving as I want it to.. it keeps pinning to start despite all my attempts to unpin it and recopy to the folder, they are all shortcuts to executable files. Why is windows handling some of them differently?
I'm struggling to work out how to create a shortcut to websites I frequently use on my desktop, previously it was simply a right click on a blank area in the window but that no longer works!
I've just installed Windows 10 & trying to get accustomed to it, now one thing is bugging me and thats i cant seem to create a Desk Top Shortcut whilst on a website, its only gives me 3 options when I right click as below:
Select all ------------------- Inspect element View source
how to create a shortcut on desktop to a URL that I might be viewing In Ie....I can do the shortcut to folders, apps, and such, but not web addresses...
I would like to create a shortcut icon on my Windows 10 desktop to execute the following command:c:Program Files (x86)Mozilla Thunderbird hunderbird. exe -safe-mode.I seem to recall that this was easy in earlier versions of Windows. (As were many other actions!).
I just moved from W7 to W10 and haven't been able to figure out how to create a desktop app icon for file explorer. I can do it for apps that I've loaded, but can't figure it out for special Windows programs.
Yes, I have it in my task bar and can clearly see it in the start popup, but I'd still like to be able to launch with a desktop click, like I've been doing for years and years.
