Computer Starting With No Saved Files - Desktop Reset To Default Wallpaper
Dec 8, 2015
So I just turned my computer on and noticed that my desktop had been reset to the default wallpaper and all of my folders had been deleted. I also realised that my documents and pictures had been deleted. I tried to run a game and my save files had been deleted.
I restarted my computer and everything was normal.
Is this an issue computer or just Windows 10 in general?
My hard drive shows 20 more GB of space but everything is gone that I used or saved on the computer. I did not back up everything since the info I read said I would not loose this information.
Is there any way to retrieve it or roll back the hard drive to Windows 7 and retrieve the data I lost?
When I start my computer it goes to a page that has date and time of day...I click and it goes to a sign in page for my microsoft account with password or pin...Can I start my computer and by pass this and go directly to my desktop page?
So I started changing my desktop backgrounds with my own images, but now, in "Settings", I no longer see the backgrounds that are included with Windows 10, like the blue Windows logo one. They don't show up in the 5 boxes.
This new "Settings" Personalisation page is terrible... Where are they saved?
I have a home built Desk Top Computer and when I turned it on this morning and when it finished booting I had lost a lot of my icons and what was there all moved to the left side of the screen and the wallpaper went back to the Windows 10 Default. Also the Application short cut screen that comes up when you left click on the Windows icon in the bottom left enlarged and took up half my screen. I tried to adjust it by using the mouse and dragging it but that wouldn't work either. About a month or little more ago I had upgraded from Win 7 Home Prem with no problems at all. It has been working fine until this morning. I had to go back to a restore point to correct it. My wife has a Toshiba Laptop that I upgraded about the same time and hers did the same thing except that she didn't loose her Icons or wallpaper they all just moved to the left of the screen.
I've had this problem a few days where I simply can't set a default browser (or any other default software from the settings) anymore. It let's me to go to the list and choose, say, Google Chrome, but then doesn't save my choice. I can revert to Microsoft's default settings in general, when the choice will stay as Edge. This bugs me the most when clicking on URL links in other software, they open up randomly in both Chrome (which I actively use) and Edge (which is the current default).
I have tried to set Chrome as the default browser from its own settings, too, but to no avail. Would also very much want to use VLC Player as the default for videos, but Win10 doesn't let me do it.
I'm sporting a Lenovo Y50-70 laptop with Intel Cote i7-4710HQ.
On my desktop computer I have a folder and some files which have a common part of a name on both such as the name of the folder could be Folder and the files could be called Folder/file1, Folder/file2 etc. Doing a search in documents or even drilling down closer(these folders and files are about 5 levels down, if I used the name Folder, I don't find the folder or the files which had Folder as part of their name.
I cleared the search file and rebuilt the index and it still couldn't find the files.
I have a laptop which contains the same files as my desktop. I opened explorer and keyed in "Folder" and they popped right up. The only difference in the machines is that the desktop has an upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 and the laptop is a Windows 10 from scratch. I have checked the search ribbon on explorer and all options and other items are identical between the two machines.
When I rebuilt the search file, I even added the drive that actually contained the Documents folder which the system is smart enough to know that the drive contained the documents folder so it removed the documents folder from the list when it added the drive. No change.
Interesting thing happened though. With all my frustrations, I restored to a C drive image from a week before to see what would happen. and immediately after the restore completed, I tried the search and it worked. So then I tried it again and it didn't work. Even drilling down the folder tree to the specific folder which contained the files so I'm looking at them while I'm keying in the search argument and it still can't find them.
I'm getting frustrated with this. No matter what I do I can't get to change the desktop wallpaper/background on windows 10. When I open a pic in ACDsee and set it as a wallpaper it doesn't change a thing. All I have is a solid color.
Today I have suddenly lost my desktop wallpaper screen just all black accept for my few icons down the left hand side of the screen and the taskbar along the bottom. Have checked in my settings, personalization page and their all there but it will not accept any change to the screen and display it. As I am still learning to use the new windows 10, I accept that it could be my own fault while I am exploring the new systems I tried going back over all the things I have experimented with.
I upgrade to Windows 10 from 7.1 today and everything seems to be working fine, but it won't display any desktop images. Trying to select one of the images in the customization screen or another image using the search option won't result in any changes. Right clicking an image and setting it as background image doesn't work also. I checked the Ease of Access options and it is set to display Windows background.
Solid color backgrounds work correctly. Slide show seems to be not available.
How to fix my icon problem. I have icons for certain files - word and excel, that I arrange in convenient places on the desktop. If I edit these then save them, Windows moves them to different places on the desktop. This never used to happen on Windows 7 ...
I would like to upgrade to windows ten but i have a lot of files saved on my computer that i would like to keep. Will Windows save them when I upgrade?
I recently decided to build my own computer, however to my horror, Windows 10 is still not working and has caused my computer to randomly cut to black screen, not turn on when the power button is pressed and to restart itself only to cut out 5-10 seconds after powering on.
I am using two computers at home one with windows vista 32bit and the other with windows 10 64bit both are home versions. I want to map the drive on my win10 machine to access my saved files and wanna share from my vista one but when I do it I cannot connect to it because it my windows 10 machine doesn't have the same user and pass but that's irrelevant I guess because no matter what use/pass i use it says this drive is mapped to another user/pass even though there is only 2 accounts on the pc that i have access to and have full access to the shared drive.
I have password protection off for the vista machine because it would be stupid to have to use a password to print since my printer is shared just fine and I can print from any pc. Everguid I use is just not detailed enough I have tried using different credentials bt they don't work.
I've made the switch to Windows 10 for about a week or so now. So far almost everything is working just as I wanted, except some sorting annoyances with File Explorer.
For unknown reasons, file sort settings for special folders like Desktop, Documents, Download are not saved. I always sort my files/folders by date (Descending: New above, old below) so that I can access to files that I use the most or recent downloaded file. The sort setting seem to work with all folders except the mentioned above. Moreover, the sorting for these folders seem to be random (not 100% sure). For instance, my Desktop would sort files and folders by Name, while my Download folder sorts file by Date (but ascending!).
In all.. those special folders are a mess! I have to move forward and backward non-stop between them as I work but their settings just keep resetting!
I should probably move my working folders to some other location and forget about it. But doing that mean I have to make changes for all my PCs so I'd like to explore a fix before making those changes.
Recently my PC just started to have some weird problem. Everytime after I restarted my PC or just restarted explorer.exe, my desktop icon reset from small size to medium and sorting order also reset. Besides I also noticed that in every folder view settings also reset.
The reason why I suspected it caused by one of the updates because I just formatted my PC. Everything was normal in the beginning but after I updated the windows. The exact problem came back.
