Creating Or Renaming A Folder Causes Explorer To Crash
Jan 5, 2016
These are my issues:
When I create a New Folder and try naming it, it freezes, then Explorer will restart. The folder will be made but if I try to rename it, it will do the same thing.
When I try deleting that empty folder, the Moving to Recycle bin takes over 30 sec long, there is nothing inside it. I can delete a big regular file instantly.
The Context menu also has very black thicker separator lines compared to what it should be a faint light grey color. That was the first thing I noticed that was off.

I have encountered this problem (in thread line) for the past 3-5 days and I have come no closer to any solution during that period of time.Basically, as soon as I left click or right click on a file in Windows Explorer it will crash. My Windows icon in the bottom left has also stopped working and I cannot ask Cortana anything (not that I did anyway...).
None of the advanced boot options work either (system restore, clean install etc...).

I did an in place upgrade of Windows 7 using a USB key made with the tool Microsoft put out. I chose not to download updates during the install, so after the initial boot, Windows started downloading updates. I reinstalled the latest nVidia drivers/Geforce Experience as well. During the next boot cycle, at some point explorer crashed and the screen flashed black, at which point that process repeats forever. I let it go over an hour just to see what would happen. URL...
The suggestion on that site is to disable 2 Windows Services: Problem Reports and Solution Control Panel Support and Windows Error Report Service. This didn't work for me, though it appears to have worked for many others. The culprit for me was Apple's iCloud service. As the taskbar was being populated, this task would load and throw an error message about logging in, at which point the crash loop began. Uninstalling this program solved the issue for me.

I am a video director. I have numerous 1TB drives, USB 3. They are formatted with ExFAT. Files are typically large: 50Gig and better. Worked and readable fine in windows 7. Could read, write, edit with them. But not in Win10. Plug it drive, it is recognized. But once you start to click files, computer freezes. Happens in at least 2 different different Win10 computers, one upgraded, one original install. If I open an application first, like quicktime player, can see files, run them, rename them, copy them. But in Explorer: freeze/crash.

I have done it before, but cannot remember what to do.
I have a bunch of pictures from the Grand Canyon, taken on different cameras and cell phones.
All have differed names and I would like to make them all the same like:
change from: img_001_dgep.jpg and so on
to: GC2014_1.jpg, GC2014_2.jpg and so on.
I know there is a simple way of doing it, but I can't remember how.

I downloaded Windows 10 on release and despite its flaws, I actually like it.
I am finding an issue with Explorer though. I've noticed that the preview image icon for folders doesn't resize itself to fit within the folder preview section, so if the image I want to show as a preview on that folder icon is tiny, it'll show as being tiny in the preview with loads of blank space around it, for larger images it does seem to fit in, though if the image is longer than it is wide than it'll cut the bottom bit off. This wasn't the case in previous versions of Windows and I presume it can be tweaked in the registry.
I'm using a 4K monitor and Microsoft have improved the scaling in this OS, but it's still not exactly brilliant. Third party software is the main culprit tbf.

How do I get File Explorer to open in the last used folder? NOT quick access, just in the normal list of directories. (file folders).. I hate 'quick access', it slows everything down so much and makes all other folders invisible - I just want the normal file list visible and file explorer to open in the same folder as I was using before, in that list. Is this at all possible?

It works fine, but suddenly today the New menu disappeared from my click menu when I click on any blank place in a folder. What's worse, if I click the New Folder button under the File Explorer top menu, there is no response. In the end, I can only create new folders using command lines but not by the usual shortcuts.

Since Windows 10, when I try to rename a file, I right click allowing the file box to open. But as soon as I try to rename the folder, it closes out. If I just type in a few letters before it closes out, eventually I can get it renamed, but it takes multiple tries and is very time consuming.
Also, if I scroll down a page using the bar on the right hand side, the page continues to go back up to the top.

Windows 10 won't let me rename files, pics etc in the normal way. It allows me to try, then reverts to the previous name. It is not a problem of permissions, I have checked that.
It will allow me to rename on "Properties", but that is one file at a time. How am I to rename a group of pictures? This really seems like a glitch.

In File Explorer I right-click a folder and select Properties. In the Customise tab, under Choose a file to show on this folder icon, I select Choose file. I navigate to my Pictures folder and select an image and then click on Apply and OK. And nothing happens, the folder is unchanged and has no picture on it.

I was able to do this in Win 7 however not having it anymore I can't figure out how I did it. In explorer the library icons on the left pane have the actual folder as a submenu item, that is if you expand a library you have to expand the actual folder to see the subfolders. I want the library icon to be the actual folder, and not have to expand it twice.

Why windows explorer would constantly reset itself to the top of a folder regardless of what action is being performed. Became incredibly infuriating when trying to organize and rename a bunch of folders and files, as it would cancel anything I may be typing and snap back to the top of the folder.
Traced the cause to happen once every minute, which also happens to be the timer for my background to change. Checked it out, and sure enough, when the background changed, windows explorer would reset to the top of the folder. Any way to stop this from happening, not including the idea of turning up the timer? I'm fine with my background changing less frequently, but it still doesn't solve the fact that it will still happen whenever it decides to cycle over.

Is there anyway of renaming tiles on windows 10? Also is there anyway to change the appearance of the tiles as they only seem to save as a blue tile with the Edge logo and a name that's allocated by the website?

In the last week, for one user only, folder operations, ie, create a folder, rename, or delete, take up to 30 seconds to complete. It is the same for all disk drives. I don't see anything in the event logs, but Reliability Monitor Report shows that Explorer stopped responding with the following:
Description
The program explorer.exe version 10.0.10586.104 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel.

It is only one user account affected. Two other accounts don't seem to have the same issue. It started after the Patch Tuesday. I did remove Office 2013 and install Office 2016 prior to Patch Tuesday, but issue didn't start till after Patch Tuesday.

Here is my problem: I keep my folders in different settings, some with large icons, some with details view.
Today they are all reset to details view, and items are listed by name. Every folder is reset to the same settings. When I try to change they always defaults to details view. Even when I go to another folder and press back, the settings are already reset.
Also, icons on desktop are keep returning to default state (big icons), I keep them smaller, when I hold ctrl and scroll mouse wheel they become smaller, but next time I reset windows they return to default (big icons) view. I already cleaned shellbag in regedit, reset windows but it is still the same.
I saw this other theme with similar problem, but I am not using Eset, I use Kaspersky.
Also I don't have this key in my registry :
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellBags1Desktop

When I open Windows 10 File Explorer from the Task Bar and choose Home, Share or View, the resulting ribbon covers the top few lines of the opened folder or files. How can I cause the ribbon to "bump" down the folder so that I can see the top few lines?

I recently got a new gaming laptop and it's been working like a charm, especially since I upgraded it to 10. I am having a problem with my libraries however - this laptop essentially has 3 drives; the (C:) SSD for OS and a few games, and two other normal drives (D: E:) ... one for my games, the other for documents and such.
Due to this, whenever I am in the file explorer and need the quick access to get to say, music, it goes directly the the file on the C: drive rather than where my music folder is actually at, and how to actually change it. My save location was changed to this drive, as well as manually going into the libraries folder in %appdata% and changing the settings to my E: drive, but this hasn't changed anything. This is both under quick access (which can be changed with the pins I believe), but also the drop-down for This PC. Right-clicking these folders for properties does show the folders under C:User[Name], but no way to change.

I tried to move my Documents folder to another partition, but stupidly specified E: instead of E:Documents. I moved it back to the default location and fixed the Quick Access link but can't fix the folder link in "This PC".
The icon is E: instead of Documents, and it points to the E: folder.
How can I fix this? I assume I need the correct registry entries. I tried the tutorial to remove/restore the folder, but the hacks only hide or show the folder in "This PC". I don't want to remove/hide it anyway.

In Windows 7 I could specify the start folder for Explorer by entering its path in the Target field of the Properties/Shortcut. This is now not possible as this filed is now grey (= read only) and cannot be modified.

About a week after Clean Installing Windows 10 from an upgraded version on my laptop, I noticed that i wasn't able to Create a New Folder anywhere, from Desktop to File Explorer Directories. Nothing! Even when i try clicking the "New Folder" Button in the Ribbon or pressing Ctrl+Shift+N it still won't work. In the Context Menu (Right Click), I can't find the "New" Button too. Is this normal for Windows 10 after being installed? Do i have to install something (maybe an update) for the "New" to appear in the Context Menu?

New in Windows 10 the file explorer opens in documents folder no matter which folder is clicked on. Open with in context works ok. Windows 10 is an update of Windows 8.1.
