Customization :: How To Customize System Tray Icon Images
Sep 21, 2015
I would like to find out how I can customize the actual images(icons) displayed in the system tray.
This is my current system tray -->
Icons I want to change include BitDefender, Chrome, and OpenVPN to make them better fit the new Windows 10 icon theme. The white icon in the top right corner is one that I was successfully able to change. The program is Vuze Bittorrent client --> The Vuse wiki actually tells the location of the .png image file --> [URL]....
For BitDefener, I found the folder where the .png files are located and I was able to overwrite them to white icons that would match my Windows 10 theme.
C:Program FilesBitdefenderBitdefender 2015supportofflinemanualimagesicons
However, the icon in the system tray stays the same (ugly red B). I am sure there is something else I need to do seeing as BitDefender is a security application in which I am sure makes it hard to tamper with it's files.
How I can change these icon images? or know of a tool that allows you to change the program's system tray image?

My Windows 10 system tray looks like [URL] .. for both large or small taskbar icons. The spacing between systray icons are larger than in previous versions of Windows.
Nearly everyone's screenshots of W10 have systrays that are more like [URL] .
How do I go about changing this? I normally use a vertical taskbar and this [URL] .
My DPI's at 100%, and the presence of Cortana and the Task View button don't seem to matter.

I just built a new computer and installed Windows 7 Pro. I have no intention of upgrading to Windows 10. I keep getting the Windows 10 Upgrade icon in my System Tray.
Several months ago, I posted a question on this forum and asked how to get rid of this icon. I was told to go into Windows Update, find the update in the list, and Hide it. I was told that this would fix the problem, and it did for some time. Now the Update icon is back and there does not seem to be an update in Windows Update that I can hide to get rid of the icon. Is there any way to get rid of this icon that won't go away?

I wanted to upgrade to Windows 10 and saw the option in my system tray. But my laptop was riddled with junk, so I factory reset Windows 7 to completely get rid of all malware/spyware, now the Windows 10 upgrade option is gone. I went thru all windows 7 updates.

I have been having some weird problem with One Drive and have received several suggestions to look at the settings of One Drive by right clicking on the System Tray One Drive icon. That icon is not in the System Tray. How do I find it?

I am getting the yellow-triangle warning on my internet icon in the system tray with the caption (upon click) "no internet access" even though my internet is working fine. I had this problem when I was running Win 7 and it still persists after my update to Win 10. Rebooting my modem and router sometimes clears the warning. Rebooting my PC does not clear the problem but sometimes a full SHUT DOWN and then restart will.

I got a new IBM Lenovo about a month ago that was running Windows 8.1. Before doing anything I immediately upgraded it Windows 10. When I hover over the network icon it says "Not Connected-Connections Available." The thing about it is, is that I am connected to the network and the Internet. I did update the network card driver today. I thought that would solve the problem, but I'm at a loss. It wasn't really a big deal until I wanted to connect to twitter and the weather apps that pop up when you click the Windows button in the lower left corner.

Taskbar won't autohide. I discovered a program icon in the system tray, that I can exit, and the taskbar will autohide. I uninstalled the program, but the icon keeps reappearing in the system tray, and the taskbar again won't hide. I ran CCleaner, and PC DeCrapifier, but the program in not listed, so I can't remove it. Upon computer restart, the Icon returns to the system tray, and the taskbar won't hide. The program Icon is not listed in the settings for the notifications.

I just bought a new Asus F555LA-AB31 with Windows 10 from amazon and after about a couple days, the speaker icon in the system tray has a little red X near it. And when hovered over it, it says no audio output is installed. I've tried a multitude of fixes, including reinstalling audio driver, using system restore and restarting Windows audio from services.msc, and none of them work.
My PC Specs:
Intel core i3 5010u
4gb ram
Realtek hd audio
Windows 10

Any way to hide it for good? Not disabling it, because that could cause some trouble, just that doesn't show in the tray? A .reg file would be awesome.
I want this for 2 reasons: First, I don't use it, I use USB Disk Ejector; and second because it's wasting space. And don't worry, everything in there has a purpose, as myself installed everyone of them.

I just upgraded from W8.1 to W10 and it looks like the icons got smaller by default in the "details" view in the File Explorer.
My problem is that now the overlay icons which are used by TortoiseSVN do not seem to show anymore in the "details" view (when they did use to show in all previous versions of Windows). By overlay icons, I mean things like a green arrow or a red exclamation mark which show up on the icon to indicate that the file is up to date in SVN or has been modified (see screenshots below).not good alternative: the overlay icons do appear in the "Medium icons" or bigger view; (but not for "Small icons"), as well as in the "Content" view.
But none of these is satisfactory to me as I much prefer the "details" view for the things I do -- I like to be able to see both the SVN status at the same time as the details of files, in a reasonable presentation (I don't like the "Content" view, it wastes too much space when you have a lot of files to go through).
I suspect that if there is a way to change the size of the icons in the "details" view, the overlay icons would show up again. The reason I believe this is that the overlay icons do appear in the "details" view when I use the 125% setting in the SYSTEM | Display "Customize your display" setting (which was used by default on my high resolution (1920 x 1080) but small (11.6") laptop screen). See screenshots below:
normal (100%) setting for "details" view in File explorer:vs. 125% setting -- notice that now we can see the green arrow overlay icon for the folder temp_SKH_code:
Question: Is it possible to change the size of the icons appearing in the "details" view of the File Explorer (through a registry hack, or anything)? I am also open to any other alternative which would enable me to see the overlay icons of TortoiseSVN in the "details" view at 100% display setting.
As I use the 125% display setting on my laptop, I do not have any problem there. My problem is with the big external monitor (27" 2048 x 1152) that I use for which a 125% display setting would make everything way too big...For more information about the TortoiseSVN overlay icons and potential issues with Windows, see here. I originally thought that this was my problem (see also this post), until I realized that the overlay icons show fine in some of the views of File Explorer, as well as when using the 125% display setting.

Since the last update i now have a new icon appearing in the sys tray (bottom left hand corner of screen) It is a yellow padlock clicking on it (both left and right click) bring up no information but as soon as it is clicked it disappears and doesn't reappear until I boot up again. I have googled it but all I have found is that it could be something to do with event logs being full up.

Norton informed me that Edge can't be protected by them - extensions not allowed (probably why it is faster?) I changed back to IE as my default browser but I don't have an icon to click. In Win 7 I had it in the tool tray but not on the crowded desk top. The upgrade removed it. Luckily I have a button on my keyboard - a little house icon - to go to my browser. The Fire Fox icon remained. IE browser (only Web Page Editor?) not listed in my all programs list - that I can find anyway.

I am having a problem. What happened was i tried opening a software called Pokemon Revolution online. People call it a client. When i did, it crashed and became "not responding." So what i did was held the power button to force restart it.
Now, when it restarted it (Im using Windows 10 on an Atheros Asus netbook), there was a prompt telling me that a file called system32/somethingsomethingsomething/Desktop cannot be found. And the desktop looks like it's been cleanedexcept the sole Recycle Bin icon. The wallpaper got retained though.
And so i restarted it again. This time, my desktop got restored to everthing, except that 2 red X's appeared in two icons in trays: the wifi and the audio. The audio i can deal with by troubleshooting. (Although it returns after 10 minutes or so). But the wifi is more pressing. The thing is, when i hover the cursor in the wifi icon, it shows me that it is indeed connected because i can see the wifi name. Oftentimes, it just says "Identifying... No Internet Access."
Another weird thing is that The wifi symbol used to be three curved convex lines, right? However, when the red X appears, the wifi icon becomesa rectangular image of a monitor. I cannot connect to the internet or use my audio after the crash.
Other details:
> when i restart my netbook, the wifi is okay. It shows me the regular three curved lines. But when the desktop is done setting up after i log in, it reverts back to the error.

All the app icons have disappeared from my desktop, as well as task bar and file Explorer. Where the icon should be is just a blank (but clickable) space.
I tried to manually alter the app icon by right clicking and going into properties, but no properties will open!

When I upgraded to windows 10, all the icon images of my pictures are now a white slide with a blue mountain-like thing on it. I can't tell what I am looking at without opening them up. I use to be able to know what they all were before I opened them.

It was working day before yesterday.
The Tray icon only shows the network/Ethernet adapter; the wifi icon is missing. Normally I'd click on the wifi icon to connect to wifi networks; that option is not available. Instead I get "Not Connected - No Connections Available." (If I plug in an Ethernet cable, that message goes away. But I need wifi!)
I head into the "Settings" app, choose "Network & Internet", and the topmost tab is "Airplane Mode"; the "Wifi" tab is missing from the Settings app.
I head into the control panel, network and internet, network connections, change adapter settings, and my Wi-Fi adapter is there, enabled, and full green signal strength.
"Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6235"
Disabled it and reenabled, didn't work. Rebooting (twice) didn't work. Full power reset (press-hand-hold power button for 5 seconds) and restart didn't work.
Ran network troubleshooter, it says there may be an issue with the wifi adapter's device driver; it tried to fix it but failed. So I manually updated the device driver in the Properties dialog; that seemed to actually install a new driver (based on how long it took) but it didn't work.
I wonder if there was a recent auto-update for this device that's causing a problem? Or is there some way behind the scenes to hook up this device (who's driver seems to be working) with the windows 10 app (which isn't recognizing it)?
Specs:
Windows 10 Home 64-bit, upgraded from Windows 7 about 3 months ago

Last night I bit the bullet again & upgraded to windows 10 & then did a clean install. I have noticed that the network icon in the system tray shows a yellow triangle & says no access but I can surf fine with chrome & use qbitorrent etc.
The only way I can get rid of the yellow triangle is to disable the network adapter & then re enable it.
Not using any third party firewall as private fireall doesn't support windows 10.

How does one go about customizing the icons for file types such as .html, .php, .jpg, .gif, .psd, etc...?
There was an option in win 7 with a "File Type" tab that listed all the file extensions and allowed you to change the icons.
I did try using regedit and change the "Default Icon" key under the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT==>.html and gave the path to the .ico I wanted to use and that didn't seem to work.

It used to be very easy in Windows 7 to modify and customize existing Themes. We had four functions at the bottom of the Theme selection page to modify "Desktop Background", "Window Color", "Sounds", and "Screen Saver". Well, it seems that some bone head at M$ has decided that we can't have this something that works anymore! Yes, some of the functionality has come forward to W10 although it now seems to be a total kludge to get to it these days. For example, the only way I've found to get to adjust the Screen Saver functionality is to perform a search on it. It does not seem to be on any menu that I can find. As for "Desktop Background" and "Window Color"; I've yet to find this functionality in W10. So why in the world did M$ eliminate this stuff?
And before somebody exclaims that you can modify the background in W10..how you add a photo to a Theme group these days. For extra credit, tell me what menu you can use to access this functionality from.
