Customization :: Removing Power And All Apps In Start Menu
Jul 25, 2015It's a simple question, with probably a more complicated answer: How do I remove these two buttons, as I think they are ugly as OS X (ok, maybe not that ugly)?

View 4 RepliesI removed the Windows Apps (3D Builder, Groovy etc.) using PowerShell and Remove-AppxPackage / Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage on our Windows 10 machines (64bit, some Home, some Pro) at home.
This worked satisfying enough, but for some (very few) local users the start menu entries for those apps are not removed. I refer to "All Apps" (the A-Z list of all apps).
Situation is like this: application is removed (checked with Get-Appxpackage in Powershell)start menu still refers to the Windows Apps with the text entry; it does not show the icon, but a coloured rectangle (sized like an icon)application cannot be started through this icon (as it is uninstalled)
(Screenshot shows the Maps (german: Karten) and Contacts (german: Kontakte) "icons")
I checked the usual places:
C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuC:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms
But of course there are no links to those Windows Apps.
How to remove these orphan "icons" from the start menu (A-Z list)? What makes Windows show those entries in the start menu's A-Z list?
After disabling and uninstalling Cortana, Edge and others as well as Search I ended up with 2 dead icons in the All apps menu one for Search and one for Edge. When I drag the Search icon to the desktop it's named as:
@{Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_1.4.8.176_neutral_neutral_cw5n1h2txyewyms-resource--Microsoft.Windows.Cortana-resources-TileDisplayName} but not sure I want to start deleting various reg entries where this shows. I also tried in all the usual places where the shortcuts are supposed to be but nothing worked and the icons are still there so how they can be removed if at all. It's more of a cosmetic problem as I have no issues with Windows otherwise...
I see people wanting to add stuff to the right click, I'd like to remove some stuff. When you pop up the right click menu, for some folders it's HUGE, and it makes it difficult to find the stuff you'd actually want to use.
pintostartscreen - I'd like this gone from the Recycle Bin. I keep hitting it when emptying, it's just annoying.
Scan with Windows Defender - I'd like this gone everywhere.
Include in Library - Ditto for this one, don't use it.
Cast to Device - Yep, useless to me as well.
Shared Folder Synchronization - Never use it, be gone!
Is there some 3rd party utility to manage all these additions?
There are also applications that stick extra stuff in there that I never need, it would be great to manage those as well.
We're looking at using Windows 10 at our school. I've got a few for testing. One of the things I'm trying to figure out how to do is remove things like the XBOX tile. Things we don't want students in during a class etc. Anyway I can't seem to find a way of removing them. I've found several pages listing powershell commands but they don't work. At least not for the xbox tile. Also I need a way of doing this for all PC's group policy or registry so I don't have to do it one by one.
View 2 RepliesHow to do it? I removed a couple of apps from there and they either get replaced by a random program or disappear.
View 1 RepliesWhy is it that some programs (like Edge, which I don't use), can have a bigger tile, on the start menu, and others (like Firefox, which I use) don't?
View 4 RepliesI can place a new folder or custom shortcut in the correct start menu location (current user or all users) but it will not appear in the All apps list. If I go to the folder or shortcut and right-click Pin to Start it will appear as a tile in the start menu, but still will not show up in the All apps list. I think this behavior started with Version 1511 since it was working for me in the previous version.
View 9 RepliesI have read everywhere on how to change the start menu width, however what I am asking for does not seem to be covered anywhere. When I open the "All Apps" section of the start menu to get to my installed programs I am unable to distinguish between some of them due to their width. (See attached screenshot)
What I want is to extend the width of the list of apps, NOT the width of the live tiles area. Seems everywhere covers how to change the width of the start menu but it only affects the live tiles area, not the app list.
I have searched through the registry and can't find anything there. Maybe I missed something?
Is it possible to have the start menu open with all apps as default?
View 5 RepliesI wonder if there is a way (through editing system files or registry) to change Windows 10 Start Menu "All apps" to something else like "My Programs". Also where is the icon file located in the system and how to change the default icon.
View 2 RepliesWindows 10 out of the Edge Browser allows almost anything to be pinned to Start Menu which is great but many of the names are too long, so once again, can names of apps be changed that are pinned to start menu?
View 1 RepliesHere is an image of what I am experiencing.
I'm running Window 10 Home Edition on an MSI CX61 Laptop.
I hope this hasn't been already asked. I'm trying to get my "Start Menu" to look similar to the below right image. I've read tutorials and I simply do not have or can not find the "Customize Start Menu" dialogue box. I am currently running the final release of Windows 10 Enterprise x64.
View 9 RepliesI followed the guide to enable Hibernate mode, but is there a way to show it in the Power options?
All I can see now is "Sleep", "Shut down" and "Restart". Was I supposed to see "Hibernate" after following this guide:
Hibernate - Enable or Disable in Windows 10 ?
Or maybe in order to see I need to restart my computer? Or this guide only enables hibernate but doesn't add this to the "Power" button itself?
So my mail app was not opening links. So I looked up how to reinstall the mail app. Got to this: [URL]
I uninstalled the apps, then ran the powershell command: Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers| Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml”} to reinstall the mail app.
A bunch of red errors appeared in the prompt and now my start menu, notifications, onedrive,... won't work.
How do I restore these functions? sfc also does not work in Powershell but does work in CMD. Also, it does nothing.

I wanted to add some programs to the top of the left side of the start menu (free space on the screenshoot). I have read about the "Pin to Start List" if you rightclick while holding shift. But this seems not to be working anymore!?!?! Is there another possibility to customize this list or to re-add the function? I don't want to use "recently added apps" or something like that ...
View 9 RepliesI want like Windows 7, I see the file shortcuts (not folders) at the top of start menu rather than in its alphabet folder.
I also want to disable showing alphabets A~Z and just show folders sorted by name.
Where are start menu tiles (pinned shortcuts) stored? I can't find them. I want to customize the start menu and back it up to deploy elsewhere.
View 1 Repliesi got a new hard drive and installed it few days ago and when i boot up, it asks me every time, which OS i want to boot up. This gets annoying since I only have 1 and I can't find the boot.ini anywhere and websites don't specify how to remove an OS from the boot up screen.
View 2 RepliesSo you know how it's possible to move your shortcuts into folders and rename said folders on regular "desktop" apps? Is this possible with Windows Store "Metro" apps as well?
What I'd really like to do, for example, is have a folder called "Games" where I put all of the games I've gotten from the store. Similar to how Office 2013 is its own folder and you don't HAVE to have Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc on their own in the start menu.
However, opening up the Explorer folder with the Start Menu only shows my "desktop apps" plus a couple choice Metro apps (like Settings)... none of the others.
How to remove the "Mount" context item?
View 2 RepliesI'm running the RTM on a netbook and have noticed that, unlike in Windows 7/8/8.1, I'm no longer able to hit Start and type in an executable. I have a bunch of portable apps that I typically type in and pull up. Now, the Start menu search pulls up ever OTHER file except the executable. It's very annoying and don't see why this shouldn't work.
What's worse, is if I pin the app to the start menu, it doesn't search it then. Say, I pin "puttyportable.exe" as a shortcut (and rename it to just PuTTY) to the start menu. Typing in "putty" gives me nothing - just the same associated files that were in the puttyportable folder (ini files, etc).
I am trying to find a way to remove context menu options from Windows, options that I am never ever going to use. For example, I can right-click on the desktop, navigate to Graphics options > Resolution, and I am greeted with this:
View 1 Repliesif it's eve possible, to remove 'Cut' and 'Create shortcut' from the context menu for files and folders?!
