View 2 RepliesI have a large number of research articles on my laptop (via dropbox). One thing I loved about Windows 7 was that I could just hit the Start button, type a keyword into the search box and a results window would pop up that listed every matching document on my computer. I was also able to customize this so that it always came up in "Details" view.
I can't seem to get that same thing with Windows 10. When I type something into the search field on the task bar, I have to first select that I want it to search my stuff and not the web. After I do that it will only bring up a limited amount of results. I have to click again to see the whole set of hits--and then if I hit "Folder Explorer" at the bottom of the menu, it brings up the results in "Tile" view.
First, I can't figure out how to set the Folder Explorer default view to "Details".
Also, is there a way I search directly into Folder Explorer via the task bar search box?
Next, I don't mind that the taskbar offers me the option of websearch
This option seems like a no brainer. It would be one click to get to the adjacent desktop.
View 4 RepliesI can pin items to the taskbar but when I right click on an item I can't unpin. Only had this problem with 10240.
View 8 RepliesI just noticed today that I am unable to right click on an item on the taskbar making it not possible to pin or unpin.
View 2 RepliesI'm a minimalist, preferring not to clutter up my screen with all kinds of icons, etc.
I used to have Cortana hidden off screen, but still able to respond to me if I said; "Hey, Cortana."
Now, recently, the icon has popped up on my taskbar, and when I go to change it, hide it, etc. I only get the options of "Show App Icons" "Show All Notification Icons" and "Show Touch Keyboard Button"
I want to use Cortana, but cut down on all of the icons on my desktop screen. I don't think it was this way before the recent W10 update.
Did the Win 10 update last night. Now I can't run my pinned Excel files ("The item you selected is unavailable. It might have been moved, renamed, or removed. Do you want to remove it from the list?") But when I say Yes, it's not removed. If I click the icon for "Unpin from this list" it is also not removed. If I right click the item on the Pinned list and click "Unpin from this list" it is not removed. If I drag the file from its folder down to the icon ("Pin to Microsoft Excel") nothing changes.
The update apparently changed the locations of all the pinned files from my nonstandard location (D:DropboxCurrent where D is my Data drive) to elsewhere (C:UsersDaveDocumentsDropboxCurrent, which location does not exist). I can't figure out how to change this. The pinned list seems to be somehow locked so I can't change it, and this is the essence of the problem.
A guy in my office just upgraded to windows 10 and it looks completely different from other installations I've seen. The start button isn't the 4 equally-sized rectangles, the top left one is hollow and bigger than the other 3, if that means anything. Anyway, when "use small taskbar buttons" is unchecked in taskbar properties, the first few taskbar buttons are hidden behind the search box on the taskbar.
I found this out by accident because I opened one more window and it barely peeked out from the right side of the search box. What can be doing this? BTW this is not the icons in the notification area, these are the program buttons pinned to the taskbar. Also, his start menu doesn't have tiles, it looks almost exactly like the Windows 7 start menu. To me, it's starting to feel like a skin/theme for windows 7, rather than an actual upgrade, and he got taken in by someone, somehow.

I would like to automatize cleaning the Windows 10's start menu from all these default pinned apps that I'm not using. I don't want to remove apps, only unpin from from start.
I tried to google, but didn't find any. There seems to be no command to pin and unpin apps in start menu. Any alternative methods? The information about the configuration of start menu must be stored somewhere....
I have a dual monitor setup:
- Main screen, where I work using different applications in different virtual desktops.
- Secondary screen, where another application constantly running in the foreground (e.g.: showing a movie, youtube videos etc.), which I need to be always shown.
When I create multiple desktops in my main screen, Windows also creates the same desktops in the secondary screen.
When working, I alt-tab to move between main screen's applications, which potentially changes desktops.
The problem is that the same desktops are changed in my secondary screen; therefore, my application stops showing when changing desktops.
I was wondering if I can resolve this somehow. For example:
1) Disabling virtual desktops for my secondary monitor specifically
2) Copy application to all desktops (therefore, it shows regardless of which desktop I am switching)
I'd love to map Windows 10's Task View to one of my mouse's buttons, but SetPoint* (the software for my Logitech mouse) does not support WinKey-based keyboard shortcuts, so mapping WinKey+Tab is impossible.
I was wondering if there is any alternative way to launch Task View, for instance:
a cmd command to launch Task View?an executable for Task View somewhere inside the system32 folder or something, which I can create a manual shortcut tomaybe an alternative keyboard shortcut not involving WinKey?
I use SetPoint 6.32 for compatibility reasons, upgrading SetPoint to a new version (which supports Task View out of the box) is not an option because my mouse stops working properly.
In the bottom bar is three windows labelled tasdkbar; two small bigger one in middle. When I click on it it shows another version of my desktop, but minus icons. What is the function?
View 3 RepliesI've recently updated from windows 7 to 10. I went to set up my dual monitors (I have 1 to my left) for some reason the monitor to my lefts identity is 3 center is Number 2. I can't seem to change this to 1 and 2
Next issue I can open a file and I can see it in my task-bar on the bottom but it won't open up on either monitor (# 2 or 3) It appears to be opened perhaps on a monitor to my right that does not exist (# 1 perhaps) I can slide some files over to my left (#3) and every now and then a file from my task-bar opens on my main monitor.
Say I have a desktop 1 with MS Word open. If I then open another desktop (desktop 2), and then open a word file from my hard drive on desktop 2, windows 10 will take me out of desktop 2, put be back on desktop 1, and then open the file I requested. I then have to open the desktop switcher, and manually drag the word document from desktop 1 to desktop 2.
Effectively, if I have a window of one application open in one desktop, and I then open the same application in a different desktop, windows will move me back to the original desktop and open the application there.
This is extremely annoying and occurs with all applications, is there any way to fix it?
Is there a tweak that would allow the Windows 10 Task Manager performance view (the graphics sliding every second) to show more than 60 seconds ? Windows 7 would allow me to see near 30 mins !
View 6 RepliesI've just started using Virtual Desktops on my Windows 10 Pro Laptop & wondered if the layout(s) of apps was preserver through power cycles (Reboots/shutdown & startup, or if they require setting up after each bootup?
View 2 RepliesA few days ago, after an automatic Windows 10 update on my desktop computer, I found that: right clicking icons on the taskbar does nothing - none of the options appear; the start button on the left of the taskbar only works by right-clicking and accessing the old Windows 8 style options; the search icon on the taskbar does nothing; the Windows 10 calculator has disappeared - when I press the calculator key on my keyboard a message appears saying "You'll need a new app to open this calculator". It seems to have been deleted from the computer.
Until these things happened Windows 10 was working well.
I did some exploring with the search window & set it up in Cortana, but I don't like it & would like to know if/how I can revert/change it back to say, "Search The Web or Computer" vs. "Ask me anything." I don't understand ho The Reminders work; is it only for that day (or I thought you could set up a reminder for a future day/like in a calendar.
View 1 RepliesSometime in December, 2015 my keyboard Windows button and my task bar Start menu and Search stopped working and without the ability to START I lost all the tiles. Windows has now become very cumbersome to use.
I have given up on Windows 10 and it's too late to recover Windows 7 (Windows 7 was great). Really wish this had not happened as I have been a Windows user since version 3.1. I guess I posted this here because I'm frustrated with the problem and need to air it out. Must buy a new PC.
I just did the upgrade from Win 8.1 to Win 10 - overall pretty seamless given what could have gone wrong- I was lucky this time. Some minor annoyances , but overall pretty good.
On the task bar search, about an hour ago, I know it was searching the web as I typed in a web address and it took me there....but now, suddenly, its only searching my local machine. I must have inadvertently changed something. that affected this. Where is the setting to get it back to the way it was so I can search the web?.
I know did change my default Edge search engine from Bing to Google...would that have affected the task bar search function?
I also turned Cortana off - did that affect it??
How do I apply a view, specifically the "list" view, to only all of the subfolders of a folder without changing each one individually.
View 6 RepliesI don't know why or when but suddenly Windows became unable to save wherever change I made to a folder. Since Win7 I despise this "new" system in which, if you want to make a folder organize it's elements by Modification Time, you must do it in every single folder and if you have a lot, that becomes really annoying. Now, the thing is that I have My Videos folder organize by Modification Time, so I go, right click, view options, more columns..., I pick it and then I do it.
But when I reload the folder it doesn't save any of what I just did. It goes back to default which is organize by Name. Also, I have it set to Very Large Icons, that doesn't either. I tried resetting them to default, I tried running sfc/scannow and it did repair something but didn't solve my issue. I'm on the edge of reformatting. I can't stand this.
I want to keep my selected tiles setup as my start up view without having to tap the windows button on screen or the windows key.
Yeah, I know, most people want to go back to the old start up menu. I liked the tiles view on my old Windows phone. I want to have the tiles I have selected and arranged to be the desktop view, not a blank photo image where then I have to add another step to select something.
So far any searches for keep tiles as start up returns info for Windows 8. I have Windows 10, native install on a Nextbook Flexx 10.
I upgraded from Win7 to Win 10 and am not able to view the new clock/calendar.Tried the "UseWin32TrayClockExperience" hack but it still does not work with the entry set at "0". If I edit the entry to "1", I do see the win7 old clock. Just not able to get the Win 10 clock/calendar working.
View 9 RepliesI can edit and view the tags (? these are called tags right ?) like 'Comments', 'Title', 'Authors' etc for .JPG and .JPEG files but cannot do the same for .PNG files. How do I it ?If it is not possible, then is there any way to convert 100s of png files to some other format ?
