Customization :: Create Folders In Start Menu To Organize?
Jun 26, 2015In W7 I have created folders in the start menu so I can organize by topic. I can't figure out if/how to do that in W10.

View 9 RepliesI have tried creating a folder in every known location to get an additional folder to show up in the start menu so I can throw some games and what not under it..I've tried creating a folder named "Games" in the following:
C:ProgramData
C:UsersmynameAppDataLocal
C:Program Files
C:Program Files (x86)
C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms
Apparently the 0-Z list doesn't read any of these directories, but I am baffled that my Nvidia driver created a folder and it shows up under "N" just fine...I'm assuming this is some type of regedit but I have no clue where to begin.
Here's a way to create a pretty convincing looking Menu using your Taskbar.Try it out yourself.(click on the image 2 or 3 times if you find it hard to read). You'll have to loose the Search Box and Taskview as well.

Settings > Personalization > Start > Choose which folder appear on Start. I need to enable ONLY the following ones:
File Explorer
Settings
Documents
Downloads
Personal Folder
As usual via registry!
In Windows 7 the key was:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced]
For example: "Start_ShowDownloads"=dword:00000001
But in Windows 10 registry address is changed I think. What is the new address?
Windows 7 doesn't let you organise folders according to their size. I was hoping that maybe 10 does? Or maybe there's some complicated reason why it can't ever be done?
View 9 RepliesSince its a windows phone using one drive how do use organize one drive do you use folders. Right now it just a long list, which I want to use it,need it to be a little easier to add things neatly. and find them.
View 2 RepliesIs there a known way to create your own custom shell folders or "special folders?" Default shell folders are Documents, Pictures, Downloads, etc. The benefit of a shell folder is you can place it in a Users' Personal Folder, but have the location actually be in another location (even another drive).
An example of a program adding a shell folder would be Zune with "Podcasts."
A shell folder can be identified by its "Location" tab in the properties menu.
I'd like to create my own shell folders to things like "Books" or "Programs" etc. with kinds of files I make. Sort of like a library.
On Windows 7 start menu you could have a folder such as EA Games and then sub folders within. For example a folder for tiger woods golf, a folder for say Fifa and so on. It seems on Windows 10 you can only have one folder level. I have tried creating sub folders but all the shortcuts within the sub folders all appear under the one top/master folder when actually viewing the start menu. Am I correct in this observation/restriction?
View 9 RepliesI would like to organize my All Apps portion of the start menu in W10 as I did in W7.
So far I have not figured out how to do this. There are a couple of problems.
1. Some programs just do not appear. I have one folder containing 3 shtcts. 2 appear and Uninstall does not. I believe another instance of an Uninstall shtct does appear, so I don't think MS is just eliminating Uninstall shtcts. All the files are in the actual Start menu folder seen with FE.
2. Any folders under the first folder in the Start menu do not appear but the files under them do. So everything is mashed together.
This is what you see in file explorer in C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms
Garmin << folder
Basecamp << folder
Basecamp << shortcut
Uninstall << shortcut
Express << folder
Express << shortcut
Nuvi << shortcut
This is what you see in the All apps list.
G
Garmin << folder
Basecamp << shortcut
Uninstall << shortcut
Express << shortcut
Nuvi << shortcut
how to work around this - until maybe MS fixes it?
I hope this hasn't been already asked. I'm trying to get my "Start Menu" to look similar to the below right image. I've read tutorials and I simply do not have or can not find the "Customize Start Menu" dialogue box. I am currently running the final release of Windows 10 Enterprise x64.

Everything is greyed out. How do I fix this?
View 9 RepliesI am trying to move a folder/directory to Start Menu, but when I drag it onto the start menu, it just shows red circle with line through it... How do I add folders to start menu left side?
View 7 RepliesI was in my users folders & deleted them (Download, Favorites, Videos etc...)Then, i realized that my start menu which has option to "ON" to make them appear, got issue with link missing.I recreated all the forders by default with windows tools (regedit & i have all references created in reg %USERPROFILE%* & in my user folder)
So... i've tried a last attempt by, creating a new user, & create Start Menu Places & pushing the links etc but even with that, nothing done (looks like it's more for people getting grey menu on/off)HOW to retrieve the missing link from elements in start menu for :
- Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos.
All the others links are working :
- Homegroup, Network, Personal Folder, File Explorer, Settings, Power, All apps.
I read many people complain about the Start Menu on Windows 10, specifically about not being able to modify it like they could in Windows 7.
You actually can modify it, pretty easily. Simply open This PC, then click in the address bar and type "start menu". You can then go into Programs and create new folders, shortcuts, etc. And any shortcuts you create can be also pinned as a tile from the All Apps section. And you can have Cortana launch them too.
Is there anything I can do to make it install properly?
View 5 RepliesWhen I Installed Win 10, if I wanted to quickly access one of those 6 Win 10 PC 'Folders' (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos), I would just had to type in the folder in the start menu search box, press Enter and it would access the folder. As soon as I changed the folders' original location, this 'typing shortcut' did not work anymore.is it even possible to make typing shortcuts to folders or files in the search box? (i.e typing "x" for a specific folder named "y")
View 9 RepliesI wanted to add some programs to the top of the left side of the start menu (free space on the screenshoot). I have read about the "Pin to Start List" if you rightclick while holding shift. But this seems not to be working anymore!?!?! Is there another possibility to customize this list or to re-add the function? I don't want to use "recently added apps" or something like that ...
View 9 RepliesI want like Windows 7, I see the file shortcuts (not folders) at the top of start menu rather than in its alphabet folder.
I also want to disable showing alphabets A~Z and just show folders sorted by name.
Where are start menu tiles (pinned shortcuts) stored? I can't find them. I want to customize the start menu and back it up to deploy elsewhere.
View 1 RepliesI can't pin shortcuts to start menu , i tried drag and drop , but it won't let me. I also don't have a "Start Menu' tab in taskbar properties.
View 9 RepliesIs there a way to make start menu smaller , since I don't have many tiles active.
View 4 RepliesI know how to add and remove things from the Start menu but is it possible to add more Groups? I can only see 4, which can be renamed, but I'd like a few more in order to organise my icons.
View 1 RepliesHow to do it? I removed a couple of apps from there and they either get replaced by a random program or disappear.
View 1 RepliesI haven't been impressed with configuring the Start Menu so far. I would like to be able to create new groups in the Start Menu, including the fancy tiles and be able to create my own shortcuts in each group.
I looked at the tutorial All apps in Start menu - Add or Remove Items in Windows 10 but this doesn't work as described. I tried creating a group for all users and copying shortcuts to that group but some items are not shown.
I've installed Classic Shell which I've been using in Windows 8. This gives all the features I need and also still lets you use the standard Windows menu giving you the best of both worlds.
