Can we add custom folders to this ? There are some folders which I use very frequently which aren't any of the standard folders (downloads, documents etc)
I just got my hands on a new UX305 from ASUS and it's working wonderfully. However, I wanted to change the icons for the Desktop, Downloads, Music, etc. folders in Quick access in File Explorer. I was able to do it on my main rig, but there is no customize tab for most of the folders in quick access, and those that do still don't allow me to change the icon.
I wanted to add some programs to the top of the left side of the start menu (free space on the screenshoot). I have read about the "Pin to Start List" if you rightclick while holding shift. But this seems not to be working anymore!?!?! Is there another possibility to customize this list or to re-add the function? I don't want to use "recently added apps" or something like that ...

After a long struggle to import my pix from the camera to Win10 and finally succeeding, I've now another mystery
1. How to put the imported 10 or so photos into a folder? I did it with another bunch of imported photos and now I can't remember how I did it though I tried and tried..
2. How can I pick out the ones I want to send (and how to send them by email?) as I prefer not to delete the ones I won't send, to avoid later regrets. I don't even know how to delete any individual photos....
MS keeps everything a secret - no links to choose photos, or delete them, or send them, or change the order in which they are arranged, etc. I had come to learn photos in Win7 with "Photo Gallery" after a long time - now I'm condemned to the same torture on the new windows!
I just re-installed my computer and I can't remember the names of those third-part programs that you could use to change your start menu to look like win 7, the free ones.
Where your start screen/menu just crashes or vanishes after a second or two. This only started happening for me now in build 10166, and the menu was behaving beautifully in the earlier build (10162). I am unable to access all apps or customize my tiles. Most of the time it makes is very difficult to actually clck or tap on any of the tiles either to run something.
I've tried to change the configuration between "menu" and "screen" to see if its restricted to one of them, but both of them vanish after a few seconds.
On Windows 7 start menu you could have a folder such as EA Games and then sub folders within. For example a folder for tiger woods golf, a folder for say Fifa and so on. It seems on Windows 10 you can only have one folder level. I have tried creating sub folders but all the shortcuts within the sub folders all appear under the one top/master folder when actually viewing the start menu. Am I correct in this observation/restriction?
I am trying to move a folder/directory to Start Menu, but when I drag it onto the start menu, it just shows red circle with line through it... How do I add folders to start menu left side?
I have tried creating a folder in every known location to get an additional folder to show up in the start menu so I can throw some games and what not under it..I've tried creating a folder named "Games" in the following:
Apparently the 0-Z list doesn't read any of these directories, but I am baffled that my Nvidia driver created a folder and it shows up under "N" just fine...I'm assuming this is some type of regedit but I have no clue where to begin.
I was in my users folders & deleted them (Download, Favorites, Videos etc...)Then, i realized that my start menu which has option to "ON" to make them appear, got issue with link missing.I recreated all the forders by default with windows tools (regedit & i have all references created in reg %USERPROFILE%* & in my user folder)
So... i've tried a last attempt by, creating a new user, & create Start Menu Places & pushing the links etc but even with that, nothing done (looks like it's more for people getting grey menu on/off)HOW to retrieve the missing link from elements in start menu for : - Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos.
All the others links are working : - Homegroup, Network, Personal Folder, File Explorer, Settings, Power, All apps.
Is there any file management or photo app to pin photo folders at start screen? Actually I'm getting Asus vivotab 8 or surface 2 rt at throw away price and planning to use it as my marriage album... Photos will be in separate folders , I need to pin those separate folders to start screen.. Possible?
I read many people complain about the Start Menu on Windows 10, specifically about not being able to modify it like they could in Windows 7.
You actually can modify it, pretty easily. Simply open This PC, then click in the address bar and type "start menu". You can then go into Programs and create new folders, shortcuts, etc. And any shortcuts you create can be also pinned as a tile from the All Apps section. And you can have Cortana launch them too.
When I Installed Win 10, if I wanted to quickly access one of those 6 Win 10 PC 'Folders' (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos), I would just had to type in the folder in the start menu search box, press Enter and it would access the folder. As soon as I changed the folders' original location, this 'typing shortcut' did not work anymore.is it even possible to make typing shortcuts to folders or files in the search box? (i.e typing "x" for a specific folder named "y")
During startup of Win 10, the options given to proceed with include Windows 10 and System Restore. I now have Win 10 on one of my laptop's internal 2.5" HDD. And I've restored to Win 7 (home premium) on my other 2.5" HDD that sometimes is temporarily in the bay of the internal drive that Win 10 is now running on.
With one of those drives in the 2.5" usb HDD enclosure, how can give the Win 10 startup window an optional link that can open and run Win 7 of the plugged in enclosure. IOW, can the startup screen be tweaked so that I can avoid temporarily putting the Win 7 HDD in the internal bay in place of the 2.5" drive that Win 10 runs on (to run Win 7 on the external drive)?
When I installed Windows 10 I noticed something strange... When I tried to personalize and choose some theme for my laptop I saw that I can't choose for example only one wallpaper from the theme... I can have all of the wallpapers on slide, or just random wallpaper from my computer. I want to be able to choose only one wallpaper from the themes.
I am using Windows 10 for about 3 days now. So far I find it good except for random Preparing Automatic Repair" problem I encounter. This happens at random times I turn on my PC or do hard reset or hard shutdown, I have never encountered this on Windows 8.1. The problem goes like this Diagnosing your PC then Preparing Automatic Repair then an option will appear in which I choose restart option. After that my PC will restart and continue starting up in which I can use the PC now with no problems. But from time to tme, after I shutdown and turn it on. the problem appears again randomly.
So I am soon going to make the jump to Win10 but I really dont like the fact that I wont be able to choose when to install updates. So I decided to get the pro version of Windows 10. So, if I buy Win7 Pro, upgrade my current Win7 HP and then upgrade to Win10, will I get the Win10 Pro as the free upgrade?
After some time of trying out Windows 10, I've realized that for some reason I am unable to customize the taskbar in Windows 10. I've tried dragging shortcuts to "Pin to Start menu", but to no avail. I have also tried unpinning items from the right-hand side with all the apps, but they never disappear, only have the option from "Unpin to Start" to "Pin to Start". Is there any way for me to solve this problem without resetting or reinstalling/uninstalling Windows 10?
How does one go about customizing the icons for file types such as .html, .php, .jpg, .gif, .psd, etc...?
There was an option in win 7 with a "File Type" tab that listed all the file extensions and allowed you to change the icons.
I did try using regedit and change the "Default Icon" key under the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT==>.html and gave the path to the .ico I wanted to use and that didn't seem to work.
It used to be very easy in Windows 7 to modify and customize existing Themes. We had four functions at the bottom of the Theme selection page to modify "Desktop Background", "Window Color", "Sounds", and "Screen Saver". Well, it seems that some bone head at M$ has decided that we can't have this something that works anymore! Yes, some of the functionality has come forward to W10 although it now seems to be a total kludge to get to it these days. For example, the only way I've found to get to adjust the Screen Saver functionality is to perform a search on it. It does not seem to be on any menu that I can find. As for "Desktop Background" and "Window Color"; I've yet to find this functionality in W10. So why in the world did M$ eliminate this stuff?
And before somebody exclaims that you can modify the background in W10..how you add a photo to a Theme group these days. For extra credit, tell me what menu you can use to access this functionality from.
