Oct 9, 2015I like the concept / idea of being able to search from the taskbar but I want to change the default search engine used by the search box from bing o google without changing my browser or installing another app or extension. I don't want to use google chrome and its bing2google extension.
There has to be a way to force Win10, Cortana and the search box to use another search engine of your own choice. Changing the default search engine of IE & Edge is easy enough to do.
It would be great if Google could develop an app to change the search engines used by Win10's search box, IE & Edge in one click. It would be a lot quicker and less tiresome than doing it all manually.

Jan 9, 2016I managed to change the search engine to Google in the new Win10 search located in the menu and also in Edge. However, the little address toolbar, that can be added to the taskbar by putting a checkmark in the address toolbar after right clicking on the taskbar and choosing toolbars has suddenly switched to Bing as the search engine. I would love to have this set at Google as it always was. I find this toolbar so much more convenient than the one that came with the new win10 menu. I have already turned off Cortana over there.

Feb 2, 2016I am running File Explorer in Windows 10 and it displays some files and folders In a portable (F) that I cannot delete. When I try it says "This is no longer located in F:. I have hit F5 to refresh, rebooted and even ran defrag to eliminate this problem. It does show a file size for the files located in these folders. I have also installed LockHunter software to delete these folders and files; it didn't work. It says "no processes locking this file have been found", and "Cannot delete file..." I have another program called Directory Lister that also finds these files. I also have tried accessing them using C Prompt, which will display the folders and files but cannot be used to delete them.

Deleted Files Keep Coming Up In Start Menu Search Results?
Feb 10, 2016Many times when I search from the Start Menu, results come up for files that have been deleted or moved but the old path is listed in the results (so that clicking it throws me a "File cannot be found" type error).
I first noticed this when I moved a folder of PDF manuals to a new location. The titles of these files will come up when searching from the Start Menu but the paths are linked to the original locations and so Windows can't "find" the file when I click on it in the search results.
I did a CCleaner sweep of my system and even tried rebuilding the search index but cannot correct this nonsense. What's going on?
Browser/Email :: Google Search Not Working In Edge
Oct 29, 2015I have google.com.au set as home page as I mainly start browsing with a search. I first started to have problems last night when opening a new TAB for a new search and selecting Home page rather than using the Bing search on the new TAB. As soon as I start typing the search bar jumps to the top left corner and gives you a few suggestions, but after I finish entering my search word/term and click the search icon or press enter I can see internet traffic by the light on 3g modem but the page remains blank.
This is now starting to happen on my homepage when first opening Edge. I type in my search the search bar jumps to top left corner showing a couple of suggestions, but that's as far as it will go.
It does however work normally sometimes. Last night was the first time I came across this problem and I'm sure I've done searches this way since I started using EDGE without any problems.
I had my wife try the same thing (in EDGE) with the same result, though she uses Firefox as her default browser.

Thing is, if I go to Indexing Options, it clearly says "Indexing complete." and there's no HDD activity (and it's had ages to rebuild the index)... and I rebuilt the index (~500,000 files).
The best workaround I've found is switching off Indexing (which reveals files in Google Drive folder, but now searching the whole computer takes forever)
Search Button Launches Browser And Goes Straight To Google

Deleted Recovery And Boot Partitions Can No Longer Boot
Feb 2, 2016I used MicroTool partition manager to delete the extra partitions on an OS drive with win10 (leaving just the main C partition on the drive), and now the laptop will not recognize the SSD with the OS on it, and obviously cannot boot. I also tried using the bootable partition recovery tool from MicroTool, but restoring the partitions also does not work, it will only allow one of the two partitions to be restored.

Nov 12, 2015I don't know if this is just me and my keyboard or if something happened with an update. Normally to open most apps I will just press the windows key on my keyboard and type its name. I updated today, both normal windows updates and the threshold 2 update (build 10586.3), but I think the issue started happening after the normal updates. Anyways, I used to be able to type my program name and press Enter and it would open.
This is no longer the case for certain items. For example, if I type Regedit, it correctly find the Regedit app but if I press Enter nothing happens, but I can click the found entry with my mouse and it opens just fine. I also cannot open a UNC path (ex COMPUTERC$ or C:Users) using the Enter button, but again the mouse works. It seems that if after finding the program it says "Run command" underneath it it doesn't open with Enter, and again neither do paths. I can type Notepad and press Enter and it opens just fine without any issues.
Can No Longer See Taskbar On Bottom Also Lost The Search Bar
Nov 5, 2015Changed something and can no longer see Taskbar on bottom, only the sides. Also lost the search bar. Tried tuning off autohide and every setting involving the Taskbar. Even tried shrinking the screen through resolution. I have to put Taskbar on the side to be able to see it.
The more I try to customize anything in Win 10 the worse it gets. Can't even seem to reset everything to default.

Installation :: Base Filtering Engine Disabled
Sep 22, 2015I thought all my Windows 10 problems were resolved when I finally figured out that Avanquest Powerdesk was preventing explorer from loading the desktop but it seems that was just the beginning of my Win 10 problems.
Once I finally got the desktop to load I then discovered that the start button isn't working, the search bar isn't working, most of the programs that should be in the task bar are not loading, Avast antivirus wasn't running and that the uninstall option in the control panel doesn't work.
Having seen that avast is one possible cause for the start button not working and having tried every other way of fixing the start button that I could find I decided to delete Avast. Because of the uninstall button not working I had to do it the same way I had removed powerdesk - delete the files first and then run cccleaner to clean up the registry entries.
It was when trying to reinstall Avast that I noticed that the install wouldn't run because the Base Filtering Engine Service is failing to start. As so many other services are dependent on that one I suspect that as being a possible cause of all of the other issues (for example none of the security apart from Comodo firewall is running because it is all dependent on this service).
The message in the event viewer appears to indicate that the service does not have sufficient access to be able to run.
Apps :: Audio Engine Missing - Error Message
Aug 29, 2015Since installing Windows 10, I have tried to open two programmes that I had previously used successfully and received error messages about the audio engine.
The first was Audacity (Wave recorder and editor) and I got two messages on trying to open it - "Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate." The other message was "Could not find any audio device. You will not be able to play or record audio. Error: Internal Port/Audio error."
The second program I tried to open gave me the following message "No audio devices. Audio Engine Error: Bas settings."
The curious thing is that I can play things through iTunes for instance quite satisfactorily (admittedly through and external amplifier, but that must mean that there's an audio output).
Is it possible that Windows 10 has removed the audio devices or altered the audio engine settings (whatever that means!)? If so, how do I regain the status quo as far as audio is concerned?
Installation :: Clean Install - Could Not Reinitialize Deployment Engine
Jan 16, 2016I recently had to restore my PC to a Windows 7 System Image from 2012.
That worked OK, but Windows Update kept failing to install the hundreds of updates needed to bring it up to date.
So I upgraded to Windows 10 instead.
That worked fine and is what I am now using.
I thought I should create and run the Clean Install media in case I need it in the future. I created a DVD as I didn't have a 4GB USB to hand. Was able to boot from the DVD and started the Clean Install process but, after selecting the hard disk partition to use, I got the Windows Setup message 'could not reinitialize the deployment engine'.
What this means and can only find some old references (Vista vintage) on the web. Should I have clicked on 'Format' for the partition?
