Desktop Changed / Floating Start Menu And No Settings
Sep 1, 2015
I"m not sure what I did, but my desktop has changed. I tried to attach a screenshot, but don't think I did it correctly.
Here's what it looks like when I touch the start button.
-My start menu items are floating sort of to the right, in the position they normall are.
-However, this is where it gets wierd.
-Veritically, on the left
1. Start button
2. a button which brings up All Programs
3. Power button
<large blank space>
4. All the way at the top, a button which when clicked shows most used apps.
My wife's laptop auto updated to Windows 10 last week and everything had been working perfectly until yesterday. Suddenly her desktop/start menu reverted from the new Windows 10 start menu to the old Windows 8.1 desktop. I did some searching and supposedly if you go through control panel, appearance, taskbar and start menu properties there should be a start menu tab where you select which one you want. That tab doesn't exist on her machine or mine for that matter.
This is pretty straightforward: I cannot access the settings for the start menu. When I do a right click on the task bar and then click on "properties", I should have a "Start menu" tab in the window. The problem is : I don't have that tab.
Also, I don't have the possibility to pin apps to the start menu, this is a bit annoying.
How can I choose which folders appear on start Via Group Policy or Registry of Windows 10? I would like to disable/hidden Settings, so I can deploy the settings to all client in the domain.
Is this the way to do this? First customize Settings > Personalization > Start > Choose which folders appear>Disable Settings on start and then export-startlayout ?
I have Windows 10. I recently had a problem with my Nvidia drivers, but could install them after all. But now I can see at startup that my graphics card is working, but after startup it stops working and windows switches to the graphics card integrated into the motherboard. After startup when I login, I can't see my profile picture, after logging in, my background where used to be a nice wallpaper is black. When I click on the start button nothing happens. When I try to search for something, it says 'These results may be incomplete'. If I try to open the windows settings app nothing happens. I also can't open Google Chrome.
I've found out that when I start up the pc, first the fan on my graphics card doesn't work, then does for 15 seconds and then stops working again.
When I click on the start button, nothing happens. It highlights when I hover over it, but doesn't react to being clicked. The same is true for the notification area.I can right click on the start button and it provides the normal options.Again the same is true of the notification button.
I have the settings app pinned to the taskbar, but the icon is not visible.I know that it is still recognised as being there, as it highlights when I hover over it, and it holds its place like any visible icon would.Right clicking it does nothing. At first, the start menu was the only thing not responding. The notification panel was working, as I remember changing to 'tablet mode' to try to resolve it.I restarted the computer, but that was when I discovered that notification panel was no longer working. I don't know the state of the settings icon before I restarted.I have also restarted into safe mode, but the problem still occurs.I have not downloaded any new software since it started occurring.I have checked the task manager and there appears to be no change in performance.
Ive updated my 8.1 today and now my start menu and indeed any metro apps wont start (ironic). If I create a new user their start menu is ok. I'm trying to revert back to my 8.1 installation but I cant because I cannot get to the revert option as it lives in the metro settings page NOT the standard control panel (why oh why are there two places with differing options, though in this case if it was all metro I couldnt access anything).
I cant revert using the new user as then it tells me I cant revert because I have added a user since upgrading? I cant start anything metro..I cant start anything from the right click start menu..I cant right click in file explorer (which I have to start via win-r) so its hard to get anything running as administrator..its a total fail of an upgrade for me.
I've recently created a thread stating that Start Menu, Settings and everything on taskbar were not working (such as volume control and wi-fi networks). I reinstalled Windows (clean install) and it was good again until today, when it started again.
I tried to open Settings via "ms-settings:" via Run, but it says that "limit time was reached" (It's a rough translation, as Windows language in my notebook is not in English). If I press Windows key + P (ms-settings:display), it won't open and I get a message that "this file has not an associated program to it to perform this task". Install a program, or in case there's one already installed, create an association in Defaul Programs control panel." Basically, this a list of what is not opening anymore:
Start Menu, Settings (and all options within it), Windows tray icons (power options, wi-fi networks etc.).
I've already rebooted Windows but I didn't fix anything. I don't know man, this is the second time this issue arises after a clean install. Windows 10 is buggy as hell, what's up with Settings and Start menu not opening anymore? Is Windows 10 still in beta? Seriously, did MS test Windows 10 at all? It doesn't look so. If this keeps happening I'll have to return to Windows 8.1 which was working fine
I tried out the Insider Preview 10547 build last night, but chose to roll back to the full Windows 10 Pro build due to not being able to fully apply custom themes and the context menu not coming up on the desktop. Anyway, the rollback went fine, but now for some reason I can't make adjustment to the Start Menu. When my desktop had finished rolling back to the previous build, most of my live tiles had disappeared, specifically the Settings, CMD, and a few other apps I had pinned to the menu. The only tiles that were still showing were the games I'd pinned before applying the 10547. I can't even bring up the Weather, Store, or many other apps by searching for them. The apps still show in Apps and Features under System in Settings, which means the apps are still installed, I just can't seem to access them, although I haven't tried to get to them through a file explorer yet. Also, under Choose which folders appear on Start, every setting is grayed out. I actually rolled back from a previous test build before and everything came up normally, so I'm not sure what happened this time.
I want to access my old desktop display with the files/folders and icons i had there. after upgrading to win 10 i now have tiles and the desktop tile doesn't contain all my previous content.
Oddly when I click on a tab I get a quick glimpse of my old desktop which disappears just as fast.
When I walk away from my computer, I want it to go to sleep in 20 minutes. Sometimes I return after an hour, and the computer is still awake. There's obviously a rat in the woodpile here. Some software is changing my sleep setting from 20 minutes to "Never" without my permission. Sometimes it will sleep normally for a day or 2, then suddenly something resets my sleep time to "Never".
Is there a way I can block this activity, or re-set it to the proper 20 minute setting on each startup?BTW, I had the same problem in WIn7 and Win8. I was hoping it would be fixed in Win10. It has not.
I upgraded to Windows 10 last night and have had nothing but problems. The biggest one is the fact that I cannot open the start menu, I had worked around it by right clicking it and then selecting what I needed from there. However now that doesn't even work.
I do not seem to have a desktop all of a sudden. All I have is this full screen start menu. How to turn this off, or how I turned it on. How to get this back to a traditional desktop?
after been using Windows 10 since launch I've got annoyed by those silly things whenever I click start menu for longer than like 2 or 3 minutes. When it happens, the windows desktop flickers to black. I uninstalled the drivers and used the microsoft generic drivers and it does the same thing. Of course, when I go to safe mode and I can't use the start menu as it just opens and closes in less than the second on its own. Because of this I've been researching this through Google and it somehow all of that kinda doesn't seem to relate to that. Also, I get the error message when I shut down and I couldn't get to see the error message because windows shuts all that stuff down.

The thing is that after updating on windows 10 it is unable to open my desktop by minimizing the Start menu, only via windows explorer. Start menu opens always in full-screen mode so I can't resize it (yes, full-screen mode is unchecked in the relevant menu).
Anyway, for one thing my start menu is stuck on full-screen, despite the fact that I never set this to happen and the settings say it isn't on. Second (and more importantly), minimizing all windows does not take me to the desktop as it should, and sends me to the start menu. It seems that the desktop is completely inaccessible, at that. It also automatically sends me to the start menu when I close the application/file I'm looking at. I can still access the files there through the file explorer (the files linked to shortcuts can be found elsewhere and non-shortcut files are in the 'Desktop' folder) ...
Start menu remains open all the time, even after rebooting multiple times. I am unable to shut the start menu and am not able to access my desktop. No application opens in the small size but all only work with a full screen.
So whenever I close all my tabs I have the windows 10 start menu with all the tiles show up, but I want to see my desktop. It switches between them like every week and I have it set to not show in personalization. What to do?
A customer brought me a machine with an issue I have never seen before. All desktop icons were gone and the only thing on the desktop is 3 lines in the upper left (opens an empty start menu), 3 lines in the lower left (opens all programs list) and the power button above that. I have managed to bring the desktop icons back but when I click the start menu it switches from the desktop with icons to the above mentioned screen with no icons. When it is on this new screen you can't right click on anything. A new user works as it should.
I recently performed a clean upgrade from a clean 8.1 Install of Windows Pro. It's connected to a domain and uses Folder Redirection. The search function finds NO programs or start menu shortcuts, desktop etc. When I click the start and start typing, a few things are found, and at the top of the window it says "these results may be incomplete".
I have rebuilt the search, stopped the services, renamed the data folder, and tried a new user profile, and it does the same thing.
I was recently browsing the internet (on windows 10) when suddenly it crashes then restarts. Instead of restarting fully it did a disk analysis. It restarted a few times when doing this scan but eventually it finished. When restarting it brought up a completely new desktop picture and had no password. This was completely different to mine. When going onto the desktop there was no taskbar, no recycling bin, but only 4 small white buttons in the bottom right corner. These buttons consist of language, wireless connection, ease of access? and power. None of these buttons seem to do much if nothing. In ease of accses there is a tab saying on screen keyboard and when clicked nothing happens. You cannot right click on the desktop either!
My wife's computer somehow acquired my user name which I had no password for, and she nor I can login into windows 10 on her computer, we can't get past the windows desktop screen.
My taskbar is out of place when I connect the second monitor. I extended the view.
It happens now and then. I think it seems to be working fine until I install the internet download manager. But again it might just be my suspicion.
Once I plug out the second monitor, the taskbar goes back to normal. This issue is the same for the wall paper. When i connect, the wall paper will look ok on the laptop but looks cut away in the second monitor. Same thing goes, once I plug out it will go back to normal.
