I followed Brink's tutorial here: Shut Down Computer in Windows 10 And I saw that there are 2 ways to fully shutdown Windows through cmd: /s and /p. What is the difference between these 2, if both of them are said to perform a full shutdown?

I click on the start button and click Shutdown and everything seems to go normally and the monitor goes black but the computer will not shutdown. The activity light continues to flash and after a few mins my PC just boots back up, almost like it was doing a reboot.

Everything work fine except when I want to shutdown or put the machine to sleep by clicking on those options, the machine makes noise like the HD is working. It then just shuts down and reboots again. The only way I can shut it off is by using the button on the computer.
View 2 RepliesI set my screen to turn off after ten minutes but it doesn't shut off. Today I read somewhere that it could be because I have a USB hub plugged in. Sure enough I unplugged the Hub and my screen shuts down as I have set it up to do. I need what is plugged into my hub and it is a real hassle to reboot my machine when I plug the Hub back in. I have also noticed one more thing and that is that programs that run in the back ground for instance Seti @ Home slows way down since the screen stays on.

I have noticed that Dolby Home Theater v4 did not migrate with the upgrade from Win 7.
I've installed Windows 10 just fine, with the latest Nvidia Win 10 driver, however when I reboot my system nothing works, not the start menu, not the apps, they do nothing, can't shut down except for a hard shutdown, after the hard shutdown the start menu and apps work fine until the next shutdown,
View 4 RepliesI installed a fresh copy of Windows 10 on my laptop (Dell 7720). While running Fallout 4, I encountered sudden power-off for my system.
The power button did not turn back on for a couple of minutes and the bottom of the laptop was quite hot.
How can I ensure that this unexpected shutdown was due to Laptop overheating and no other reasons (such as Driver conflicts or bad drivers) ?
PS:- In the event viewer in the System tab , I noticed 3 major events , 1 critical, 1 Error and 1 warning. Attaching these 3 FYR.
I set up a "shutdown" shortcut on my desktop that calls "shutdown.exe" and almost every time after I click on the shortcut I see a message dialog box that saying explorer is not responding and it takes a while for that dialog box to close and then finish shutting off the computer.
I've noticed this also happens when using the start menu->power->shutdown.
Is there a way to shutdown windows 10 without installing updates? I know previous versions of Windows had command line or registry tricks that worked with this. Note the version of Windows 10 I am using is the normal version you get with the free upgrade.
View 8 RepliesProblem : HP proBook 6570b goes into sleep mode when clicking on start /power / shutdown .
What I have tried : went into advanced power setting in power & sleep tab and made sure the correct settings were applied under power button and lid and some other setting . I think they look correct anyway but i,m not an expert .
Uninstalled the HP power management app in case there was some conflict but this didn't change anything .
Current state : Able to do soft shutdown till system goes to sleep mode then press power button 5 seconds to completely shut down .

W7 used to be fairly slow to start, about 2 minutes, but it shut down pretty quickly. Since "upgrading " to W10 my PC takes about 3 minutes to boot and even longer to shut down. Unless I can leave it, I usually just switch it off after about 30 seconds.
In other forums I have heard reports of boot times ranging from super fast (15-30 seconds) to funereal (5 - 10 minutes and then some). How to speed this up?
I was thinking that a clean re-install would be the best solution, but since this was the free upgrade, I don't have a copy to re-install. Maybe do a clean re-install of W7 and let MS upgrade it again (maybe!)
I've been looking into clearing the pagefile, and I found the following steps at a somewhat dated webpage:
In the registry editor, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory ManagementSet ClearPageFileAtShutdown to the REG_DWORD value of 1.Restart Windows.
I'm just wondering whether those steps are still valid, and, if so, does clearing the pagefile work as advertised?
I installed Windows 10 one week ago, but I still have issues with the sleep mode. I configured the laptop, that whenever I close the lid or I use my function key the sleep mode is started.
Unfortunately the laptop is either not entering the sleep mode correctly or is not able to restore it. Which means when I open several programs they won't open again.

View 9 RepliesI thought W7 was slow to boot, about 2 and a half minutes, but W10 is even longer, over 3 minutes.
W7 shut down fairly quickly, but W10 is taking as long, if not longer, than it does to start up.
Okay so I've upgraded and use windows 10 for about 2 weeks now. All is fine until I've experienced this random shutdown where the computer turns off completely in a splitsecond then reboots itself.No BSODs, no warnings at all. Recently, it's been shutting itself down and reboots itself but won't even make it to the login screen before it shuts itself down again and this will continue in a loop. I had to turn off the plug and turn it back on. It will prompt a system restore which the computer will work fine for a while after the system restore. I assume this problem is because of windows 10 because I have not experienced this problem when I was using windows 8.1.

View 3 RepliesI'm using an Intel Compute Stick as a dedicated processor to remote-control some portable audio equipment. To assist portability, the power supplies for all the gear are to a single plug and it's all made to be turned off by simply "pulling the plug" (i.e. no shutdown process). The Compute Stick basically being a fully functional Windows 10 device, it is NOT made to be powered down by simply "pulling the plug."
It's somewhat annoying to have to reach in the rack to power up/down the Stick before I can move it, doubly annoying to have to sit there and wait for it to shutdown, especially if it *decides* it feels like doing some other kind of business before it gets around to my shutdown request. The annoyance factor is increased as there's no attached screen or HIDs to give confirmation that the shutdown request is pending.
So, my question is this: Is there any way to configure the Stick PC in a way that ensures it avoids the adverse effects of being powered down without a shutdown sequence?

View 8 RepliesURL...In control panel under windows update I click "view update history",URL...I'm assuming it has to do with my previous problem in the previous post, another problem might have been that I shut down during a restart for an update because my computer sometimes has problems starting up so I have to unplug my desktop and plug it back in for it to work. (when it restarts it says overclocking failed thought I don't overclock so I enter and exit the BIOS to get back to normal)
View 1 RepliesI have multiple PC's running W10 v1511. For some reason at least one of them and I suspect more than one will automatically restart after it has been shutdown. The restart does not occur immediately, in fact, it is several hours before the magic happens! The reason I know it's happening is the system will be in a sleep state when I check it in the morning after I know I shut it down the night before. The PC in question is the one that I have described in my system specs. I know all about the "Wake On" settings in the in the Intel network controller. I have them all turned off (unchecked) but that only effects the system when in sleep mode? Is there some other setting that could be causing the system to refuse to stay shutdown?
