Disabled USB Ports Startup Services
Sep 19, 2015
So I was messing with the services startup parameters and I managed to change something which is now preventing my USB ports from working. My kb/mouse lights up during boot and then goes off and stays off just before the login screen appears. How I could fix this without reinstalling windows again? I've tried all ports but none of them work .

I am being bugged by a problem associated with USB ports apparently being intermittently disabled or disconnected.
The result is a cacophony of device disconnected sounds being played. It ultimately means the PC has to be shutdown. Occasionally a device connected sound will be heard as well.
I have heard that Win 10 is disabling or disconnecting USB ports to save power for tablets and such. Understandable for limited power availability but for PCs where power is always available this seems misguided.
I need to know if this is by design or can it be selected off via registry option.

It seems Microsoft has eliminated a feature I once used prolifically: Hardware Profiles. Windows-10 does have a "hardware profile", but it is nothing like what was in XP (or in Win-7, as I understand it). I want to know if there is an alternative in Windows-10 that allows me to control which Services are enabled or disabled from one session to the next, based on the currently selected profile (XP also had User Profile, but that's a different beast, and that still seems to exist in Win-10).
In the older O/S'es (XP, 2ooo, and NT for sure), you could set up multiple "hardware profiles" (silly name because it related as much to controlling Services as it did to controlling Devices). You give each profile a name, and set which one is the default startup if you let the screen time out. This is like the timeout in a multi-boot menu, and it's a menu that comes up right after the O/S menu if you are multi-booted. If you're single boot, it comes up at that same moment in the boot process.
Then, in the properties dialog for an individual Service, in the Logon tab (if I recall correctly, or maybe it was a "Startup" tab), those profile names you made will show up as a list allowing you to set enable at bootup or disable at bootup for each profile in that list.

I am working on a .reg file to disable all the unwanted services. I do not know the keys to use for the following services and would like adding them to my .reg located below.
Security AccountsSystem Event NotificationWindows FirewallWindows Eventlog
And can you look over my current list and see if there is anything that 100% must not be turned off? Is there anything else you would add?

I just reinstalled Windows 10 (clean). Now I see that I can't turn on Location Services, so I can't use cortana!
If I click on "change" (turn on) in the settings menu, nothing happens.
If I try to open cortana settings, nothing happens as well.

Is there an easy way to disable and re-enable groups of services / processes in Windows 10 so that the computer can be switched between optimization 'profiles' for, say, routine office work, audio/video editing, and gaming?
I have two computers now - one for routine office work (e.g., Office suite, Quickbooks) and a dedicated audio/video editing workstation. The latter is very powerful and I'd like to use it for both jobs, but not if all those background processes (59 total), like Cortana, OneDrive, iCloud mean sacrificing resources for critical A/V work. Neither do I have the time or patience to manually disable scores of Startup apps and services each time I throw my A/V hat on.

A client brought his desktop into us with the following issue:A few months back he upgraded to Windows 10 without any issues. A few days ago his mouse and keyboard stopped working (both are USB). He brought the machine into us and I took a look at it. I found that, and I thought this would resolve it, he had a bad hard drive and cloned it. I installed the new hard drive and the PC booted back into window with no issues except that I still don't have any working USB ports. The PC only has USB Ports, no PS/2 Ports. No matter what USB port I plug a mouse or keyboard into it does not register. I suspect it could be a driver issue, but I can't access the PC at all to check. I want to try and avoid doing a backup and reinstall of windows if possible.

My win10 installation got stuck at 91% so I had to restart and disable my antivirus and other services, but when I start MediaCreationToolx64 it starts to download the 3gb again from the beginning. Is there an installer somewhere in the downloaded files that can let me skip this or do I have to download it again?

As we all know, the classical Windows XP has a tool.... XpLitePro ... to remove all unwanted software and services you wish to have deleted. XpLite could both remove hidden programs/services which are not visible in configuration screen/ remove programs section
Question: Does Windows 10 have such a tool already? I can't hardly wait to remove unwanted stuff..

I'm not sure what all is affected by "Windows services" not connecting but since that happened, I am unable to access my Outlook email and a solitaire game won't open. I'm also trying to update Windows Defender but it won't finish updating. And, I have checked to see if an update is due and it just never stops looking for one. Little blue dots, little blue dots, little blue dots...
I have not downloaded anything from anywhere.
I never had any problems with Vista or 8.1. I'm almost ready to go back to 8.1.

I am trying to install a generic text printer onto a windows 10 tablet but when the printer is paired through Bluetooth the Com port it is using is way beyond the normal Com port numbers.
After the printer is paired I would normally add a local/networked printer and select the same port as the Bluetooth device, when this is in the range 1-4 that is fine, but (due to repeated attempts) it is now up at Com19
I have looked online and found articles for Windows7 talking about uninstalling the un-used Com ports (that windows thinks are being used) but I'm not sure how to reach the same areas in Windows 10
I have so far tried the following:
1. turning it off and on again
2. using device manager, view ports, under the view menu setting 'Show hidden devices' but I can only see the two latest ports (19/20)
3. I have looked at the properties of port 19 and tried to change the port number, but this is where it says all ports from 1-18 are in use.
4. I have tried to follow win7 instructions that directed my to advanced system properties and the environmental variables/system variables - this section I can't find in windows 10 ....
The only other option seems to be hacking the registry, which I will now look at....

I tried to use a USB headset plugged into my keyboard's spare USB port. I found it didn't work and at first I thought it was an audio issue, but trying to connect my kindle via that port didn't work either. I then tried using the USB ports on my monitor and found neither device worked on those ports either.
The ports on the front and back of my computer tower are working fine, but no device is working or even being noticed by the computer when plugged into any 'hub' ports. This occurred without a restart from the time I was listening to a video via headphones via the keyboard port just an hour before the problem occurred, and I'm not aware of any driver or app changes in that time.
I've tried avast, malwarebytes, plenty of restarts, checking legacy USBs weren't somehow disabled in BIOS, updating every driver I can think of via Device Manager, manually and even with 'DriverEasy' for good measure. I tried each of those steps both before AND after a system restore rollback to Friday. I also tried CCleaner, and of course over twenty restarts at this point. Device Manager looks like this right now: [URL] ......
I can't get that alerted Multimedia Audio Controller to update despite reinstalling my audio card drivers and realtek several times each now, but audio isn't the problem, just a symptom as the speakers I run through my TV as a third monitor are working fine and so are the headphones when plugged into the tower. I don't think that's the problem.

I am having a weird issue with Windows 10 on my custom built machine. I have Windows 10 Pro version 1511. I just today started having this issue. I am assuming it was after the latest update because I had no issues on the initial bootup.
I fired up the pc, logged on like normal, and nothing out of the ordinary happened. Windows tells me it has an update installed and needs to reboot. Not doing anything important, I decided to reboot and get it out of the way.
Well, upon rebooting, it goes to my locked screen like normal. I click on my mouse to bring up my pin screen to unlock the pc, and the mouse won't work. I look at the bottom of it, and the optical light isn't even lit. Keyboard's number lock light is on, but nothing on the keyboard responds either. I turn on a USB audio interface I have, and it shows that it won't connected to the pc like it should either. It is like all the USB ports are dead.
Not knowing what to do, I hit the old reset button, and boot into my BIOS. Mouse and Keyboard work fine without any issues in the bios pages. Load back into windows, and I notice that the mouse's optical light is on, UNTIL it loads windows up. It then goes dead.
I tried taking a PS2 to USB adapter to the PS2 port, and that didn't work either. Eventually, after I leave it sit on the login screen long enough, the USB ports become active and I can finally log in and use it like normal. But it takes literally 5 to 10 minuets. I check device manager and it does not appear that any USB drivers where updated or changed.
So far, I have rebooted twice and the problem happened at both boot ups, but eventually the USB ports kick on and let me log in. After I log in everything seems to be working fine.

Since the upgrade to Windows 10, my main monitor, a DVI-Dual Link monitor, has stopped working after posting. I Have 2 other monitors, one DisplayPort, one HDMI, both working. I can use my dvi monitor, if it is the only monitor plugged in, to use the BIOS, but after Windows Loads, the display goes black, and "No Signal" is displayed. Also, It is not the monitor because I could use the HDMI with the monitor for it to work, but to get the 144hz I need to use dvi-D
I have tried:
-Uninstalling all Video Drivers
-Uninstalling CCC
-Reinstalling CCC
-Refreshing Windows
Specs:
FX-6300
CM 212 EVO
Gigabyte GA-970-UD3P mobo

I recently upgraded my PC case and for some reason whenever I plug in a USB device Windows doesn't seem to go with it. In device manager when I go onto the connected USB device properties it says "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)". I'm currently running Windows 10.

Big gaming tower with ASUS MB, on-board sound, separate graphs card. I upgraded from Win7 to Win10 and everything went well for a day. Then my USB ports: 2's and 3's and my PS/2 ports too, went dead. Well, they have power but no communication. I figure I could reinstall an image of my Win7 and then roll back up to Win 10 but what is the matter is what I'm wondering.
I installed a fresh Win10 ISO on another drive in the box and that one works fine. The installation I rolled up to Win10 by invitation sticks on the Lock Screen and I can't enter anything at all. So, I can't get past the lock screen. All other USB devices have been disconnected except, at one point, a keyboard and then just a mouse, then just a keyboard on the PS/2. No joy. How to I can fix/hack/reinstall/etc the USB bus drivers? I think that would do it.
BTW, launching Safe Mode under my 7-to-10 conversion install makes the computer throw a "System Thread Exception Not Handled" error Wdf01000.sys Then it reboots automatically and I'm stuck back at the Lock Screen, well, unless I boot to the other Win10 OS on board, in which case I can boot to Safe Mode easily under that clean Win 10 install. That's just not getting me where I want to go. Might be time to just reinstall everything. Even the recent images I have are not what I really want. Win 10 was working so well for me on a Dell laptop I've been using since February.
