Updates :: Windows Update Downloading Automatically?

Aug 17, 2015

Shortly after the "Get Windows 10" icon appeared in the system tray of my Win 8.1 installation, I made the mistake of clicking on the "Get Windows 10" icon and "reserved" my copy of Windows 10. After some research, I elected to cancel my reservation for Windows 10 and did so by again clicking the "Get Windows 10" icon and going through the process to "cancel" my reservation. (I subsequently read Brink's fine post on "Get Windows 10 Icon -Remove from Taskbar in Windows 7 and 8.1" and did option four to uninstall the KB3035583 update). Now when I go to windows update and "search for updates", the search result is "install windows 10" though it does allow me to view "all available updates" which includes numerous "important" security updates as well as a few "optional" updates, one of which is Windows 10. I select the "important" updates, deselect the optional updates (including windows 10), and click install then get a dialog that "Windows 10 setup files are being downloaded" and an option to "cancel" (which I do). How do I stop Windows Update from downloading Windows 10 setup files and just download the "important updates" to secure my present installation of Win 8.1?

Stop Windows Update From Automatically Rebooting Computer

Mar 21, 2016

As you are aware, Windows 10 PCs have been programmed to automatically check for updates and install any updates they find. Windows 10  is also set to normally schedule reboots for when you are away from the computer. Is there a tool available to stop Windows Update from automatically rebooting your computer?

New Custom Build Shuts Off And Restarts Automatically?

Feb 15, 2016

I just built a new system with an Intel Core i7 6700k, GIGABYTE Z170X Gaming 7 motherboard and a GIGABYTE R9 390 GPU.  I also have a Samsung 950 PRO M.2 SSD (boot drive) Samsung 850 PRO 2.5" SSD and Windows 10 Pro.

I first got all the parts and built the system and everything worked fine.  I installed Windows and began running burn in tests on the GPU.  The computer was great.  Then I received my Corsair accessories like my light bar upgrade kit for the Dominator Platinum DDR4, blue individually sleeved DC cable kit for the AX860i and a front I/O panel for the Obsidian Series 350D(it was for a USB 3.0 exchange on my 650D case).

So after I changed out front USB 3.0 port cables, swapped out all the cables running into the PSU, and changing the light bars on the DIMMs, I put it all together and I got nothing on the motherboard.  The system wouldn't even start up.  In fact, none of the LED lights on the motherboard worked.  So after playing with some cables, I got the lights to work, but then the system would shut off and restart automatically.  So I changed out the motherboard and GPU.  I then put the system back together and it still wanted to reboot automatically.  I then waited 2 weeks to exchange the RAM, but it still does the same thing.  Finally, I just swapped out the Corsair H105 AIO cooler and still the same thing.  All the lights come on, all fans start, the H105 looks like it's starting, but then after 5 seconds, it shuts back off.

Can't Get Update To Build 10240

Jul 26, 2015

I have been an Insider since the beginning and have received all the updates during the past few months.  I'm currently stuck in build 10166 and Windows Update informs me that my device is current.  Checking for updates yields nothing new except that Defender is updated daily, sometimes more than once.  On the next page I see a "Fix Me" button, but when I click on that up comes a dialog asking if I want to discontinue future builds.

I ran the update troubleshooter, which reports: "Problems found: Service registration is missing or corrupt.  Not fixed".  I don't know if this is the cause of my problem, nor do I know how to repair the service registration. I suspect this will impair my upgrade to the final Windows 10 build on Wednesday.

Installation :: Unable To Update To New Build

Jun 17, 2015

I've got a Nokia Lumia 530 and it was running happily on Win10. With the new build out you had to firstly roll back to 8.1 Update 1, then install Windows Insider and update.Unfortunately I don't seem to have enough drive space to do the update. It needs 1.35 gig and although Storage Sense says 1.39 gig available, it won't progress due to insufficient space. Must be some temp files or something.I've moved every app I can over to the SD card but to no avail.

Build 10041 Not Showing Up In Update

Mar 20, 2015

So, I've been checking for updates pretty frequently for the past couple days, and build 10041 has never shown. I've gotten some sound driver updates, some Windows Defender updates, and a Dictionary update that refuses to install and has refused to install since I ran 8.1, but 10041 doesn't show up. I tried downloading the iso from mega but idk if it was a 32 bit image because it failed to mount.

I'm on a Surface Pro 2 running build 9926 of Windows 10.

Installation :: Unable To Update To Build 10586?

Dec 3, 2015

I tried updating normally using Windows Update. It fails in less than 10 seconds.

I tried using Media Creation Tool. It downloads the update, but at the end it fails again and tell me restart my PC and try again.

I tried deleting the files at C:/Windows/SoftawareDistribution/Download and then going back to Windows Update. It didn't work.

this Build is crashing and freezing in almost any game that I play or application that I use. I'm only able to use Chrome and Office properly. Everything else usually freezes and crash.

Updates :: Insider Build 11102 Won't Update To 14257

Feb 10, 2016

I have been successfully updating as a Insider Win 10 since Oct 2014 with no problems. I recently did a clean install of build 11102 and it seems ok. A few slow downs and hangs but generally ok. Recently I received notification from MS that build 14257 was available for download. I downloaded the file as always and it went through the usual prep and getting ready etc. When it rebooted to start the install I get a screen asking me to "Choose your Keyboard L/O" I choose United States and then it reverts back to "Choose an Option" I choose "continue & Exit to Win 10" and it boots back into my build 11102. I've tried this three or four times with the same result. I have downloaded and run the MS Fit-It for upgrades to no avail. I have tried using a Local account, still does the same thing. I created an ISO TechNet and it does the same thing when trying to do a clean install. I have run DISM and SFC /scannow

Build 10158 Cannot Update - Not Enough Memory Available To Create Ramdisk Device

Jun 29, 2015

I've tried twice now to update to build 10158 and each time it throws a blue screen with an error of:

Recovery
Your PC needs to be repaired
There isn't enough memory available to create a ramdisk device
Error Code: 0xc0000017

Since the build is brand new obviously there are no threads or solutions to this problem. Why this particular build would give me this error? I have never had this problem with any previous builds.

Installation :: Stuck On Build 10166 / Update Not Giving Newer Builds

Jul 30, 2015

For a few weeks I'm already stuck in Build 10166 of the Windows Insider program, Microsoft said that insiders would receive the launch version before public but I still haven't received an update to the final version yet. However non insiders already have the final version. I'm refreshing the Windows Update every half an hour and it only gives me Windows Defender updates every now and then.

Updates :: Cannot Find Newest Build After Rolling Back To Previous Build

Jan 29, 2016

So, recently (after the November build release) I woke the next morning to find that my computer underwent a rather major update. After which, it seemed, my home network was thrown out of wack. I immediately rolled/reverted/recovered to previous build. But now everything is out of wack. Most of the time I have to restart my computer just so it'll communicate with my printer to start printing.

And restarting the computer is twice as long if it restarts at all. Most of the time It gets stuck in the "restart" progress animates (the rotating circles) and I have to press the restart button on the computer tower, with great regret and dread. Transferring files from one windows 10 device to another is a 50/50 hit or miss. I'm not literate when it comes to networking and was super happy how everything was.

But now, not only is my wifi home network out of wack, but my computer itself is wonky. I figure I might as well reinstall the newest build in hopes that it'll at least fix a fe of the problems. But anytime I check for updates, the newest build no longer shows up.

Windows Mobile And Desktop Build Numbers Aligning

Jun 5, 2015

Windows mobile for phones is currently at build 10134 (according to the latest leak) and the desktop version is at build 10135.

I find this interesting because Microsoft was so behind with their mobile builds vs the desktop. Could this mean Microsoft has played caught up internally with the mobile build?

I don't know, but I would like to start seeing universal updates to universal apps, instead of apps updating separately for desktop and mobile.

Just thought it was interesting to bring up - especially since we all want more stable versions of Windows 10 mobile, maybe it means the core OS is even closer to the desktop version.

Windows Apps Not Opening After Roll Back To Previous Build

Dec 21, 2015

After experiencing difficulties with the last windows update I decided to roll back to previous working build (10240). Now some of Windows 10's apps are not functioning. If I open e.g. Calculator, Photos or Store, the app's window will flash on the screen for a second or two before closing.

The effected apps also take a different appearance in the Apps & Features section of the settings with the "move" and "uninstall" buttons greyed out and the names being less user friendly, I've attached a screenshot below. Is there are way to get them restored?

Automatically Mirror Files From Windows To Network Drive?

Feb 23, 2016

How do I automatically mirror files from a hard disk drive to a network folder?

In this case I want to mirror the contents of an entire disk containing photos (no system files) to a shared folder on an OpenMediaVault server running on my home network.

This is separate from the regular backup of the rest of my system which is done with backup software. For the contents of this disk, I don't want them compressed into a backup container file. I want them to be exact duplicates of the original files, kept up to date in that shared network location (login required).

Also, it doesn't matter if they update in real time. Once a day is fine, for example.
