Drivers :: Compatibility With Seagate External Hard Drives
Dec 22, 2015
My HP Pavilion all-in-one computer does not recognize my Seagate external hard drive after I installed Windows 10. Everything worked well with the Windows 8 but neither system will recognize the other once I upgraded to Windows 10.

My Maxtor external hard drive is not showing under This PC, but is under Device Manager. Updating the driver comes back as driver is up to date. Changing Bios setting between UEFI and Legacy do not make a difference. Using a different USB port does not make a difference.
I can get full access to the drive if I boot up LinuxMint from a USB stick.
Microsoft says this is a manufacturers driver problem.
Acer says this is Windows problem.

With Win7 I used to open one external drive, then through My computer locate the other drive. I would have each drive on its own window. I could then select relevant files on one drive copy and paste into the other drive. With Win10 if I click on File explorer I can open one external drive, where can I locate the other drive to put in a separate window. If I click on the other drive, it just opens it in the same window. Win7 and previous versions used to be so simple.

Since upgrading to W10, My puter will no longer load when I have my external hard-drive attached. When I switch on my puter, I get a black screen with the message 'Non-System disk or disk error, Replace and strike any key when ready'.
When I reboot with the ext HD disconnected the reboot is fine and W10 loads no problem. If I reconnect the Ext HD while the puter is up and running, no problem, and both the computer and now attached external hard drive function perfectly.
I have tried reformatting the external hard drive but I still have the same start-up problem when the ext HD is attached on start-up.

Windows Search returning no results on one of my external harddrives. I have already:
Tried indexing the HDD and rebuilding.Non-indexing and rebuilding.Indexing only specific folders on the HDD and rebuilding.Specifically disabling indexing for this drive in the drive's properties.Checked that I have the appropriate permissions on the drive (they are identical to my other HDDs).
Crude example of my problem:
I am looking for the following file, A:Example est.txt.I am inside the A:Example folder.I search for "test", "*" or "txt".It says there are no results.
And it says "no results" instantly - it doesn't appear to even try.
I do not have a second drive with sufficient space to move the contents to do a format - so I'm looking for non-destructive solutions.

My PC performance with Windows 10 is very good except when it isn't
One of the things that is perplexing me is that my external hard drives seem to be impacting my startup performance. Following start up Task Manager performance tab shows one of my external drives (G) working at nearly 100% and the noisy disk drive suggests that it is working hard. The disk transfer rate also indicates movement between the PC and the drive. This is despite Drive G being used only as a storage/backup device with no automated actions configured. Yesterday Drive G became very hot as a result.
If I disconnect Drive G, my second external hard drive Drive F takes its place and task manager shows the same activity as previously shown on G. If both drives are connected F shows no activity.

I just upgraded from Windows 7 PRO to Windows 10. I notice that my external USB 3.0 drives can't be found. Before the upgrade it was ok. The only external device that does show is a Sandisk FIT USB 2.0 stick.

In recent weeks, it has become impossible for me to safely remove my external drives. (Mostly, I use Western Digital Passports, Passport Ultras, etc).
I am using Windows 10.
I close all of my programs and folders. I get the "busy" message and to try again later. I run Unlocker on the drives, and Unlocker shows no activity or actions that I can take. I bring up my task manager and nothing is running. I try to safely eject from the WD utility and it doesn't work. I try to eject by going to my computer, right clicking on the drive, and ejecting from there. Sometimes I simply wait for half an hour, read some articles, try again. I get the same "busy" or can't shut down message.
I read online that I could try to Device Manager, click on the drive, and under policies select "Optimize for Performance." However, the computer must restart for changes to take place, and when i've tried, I get stuck on an infinite "Restarting" screen.
I read somewhere that I can try to empty a hidden recycle bin on my external, but I can't seem to reveal it?

After a system refresh of Windows 10 all external disk storage drives, Micro SD and USB are listed twice in file explorer. This is a common problem, reported many times in forums and community support web sites. Could a solution be to reload file explorer. Is this possible and where would I find the download?

In the past few days my external hard drive makes the sound (windows notification) like when I unplug it from my desktop. Then about 5 seconds later I get another sound and notification asking me how I would like to view content for G: (my external hard drive). I only have it attached to use for backups and I've checked my back up program (easeus) and my backups haven't been happening either. I used crystaldisk to check it and it's healthy. Why it would be essentially shutting itself off and on?

When I plug my external into my pc it tells me it's unable to use and to format the drive. So I try to do so, and Windows tells me that there's a program using the external drive.I attempt to format anyway since I know there's no programs using the drive, and after a minute the formatting comes to a stop and I get a message saying it's unable to format. I've tried formatting it via 'This PC' and DIsk Management in Windows 10. Tried Quick Format as well and nothing is progressing.

I purchased a 1TB hard drive to place media files on it so that I could plug it into my DVD player which has a USB port. I made sure to format the hard drive to Fat32. What I can surmise is that the 1TB hard drive is too big for the DVD player to read. I plug it in and it says Device Not Supported. But I've successfully plugged in an external card reader and used a 16GB SD card to place files on and it reads them fine. So I'm thinking it's the size of the drive that is the issue.
I might have to partition the hard drive into two partitions. One partition 16gb and then the other partition with whatever is left. They did say they were not sure if there was a way to set it up so the 16gb Partition is what is recognized first when plugged into the DVD player. This way I would transfer movies I want to watch to the 16 GB partition, and transfer them over.
Now when I search hard disk partitions in Windows 10 the manager comes up and I can see the hard drive, but I can not change the size to partition it. It's grayed out. Is there a freeware program that works with Windows 10 that will split the hard drive into two partitions in sizes I specify, and make sure that the 16GB partition is the first one loaded or seen? And if I set it up that way when I plug it into my computer will the computer see both partitions?

My external hard drive is showing an error.
G: is not accessible.
The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.
How to fix it without formatting it? Have a lot of file on there that I'd like to recover if possible.

I have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 2TB USB 3.0 external hard drive that I use to store (majority) videos and documents. A few days ago it started giving me this error for every folder and file, and eventually just from trying to access the hard drive itself from This PC:
And this is what shows up in Device Manager:
In Disk Management, this is what shows up at first (first image) and then when I refresh Disk Management through Action > Refresh (second image):
As for specifications wise, I clean installed to Windows 10 Pro N x64 (a day after this error came up when I plugged in the hard drive, actually... Not sure what I was thinking at the time) with what I think are updated drivers for my hardware from the manufacturer's websites. Previously, it was a clean installation of Windows 10 Pro x64 after upgrading from Windows 8.1 Pro x64.
Not sure if this is worth mentioning, but, all my folders and files show up when the computer actually can read the hard drive, I just can't open any of them. I've never had to deal with hardware problems before. I really don't want to lose the files in that hard drive, as I'm not able to make a backup even if it was working (with it being my biggest external to date).
This is what the hard drive shows on Speccy at a glance:
(Is the serial number and firmware version supposed to be the same on all hard drives? )

Getting ready to move from Win 7-64 to Win 10-64 when 10 is available next month. It's my understanding that Win 10 will not install over Win 7 so I'd like to install a new 250Gb SSD (I currently have Win 7 on a 128Gb SSD as C: ) for a clean install on it. Once all my files & software are transferred I'll keep the current 128Gb SSD as an extra drive.
So, are all SSD Hard Drives created equal? I'm looking at NewEgg & the prices are all over the place. My current SSD is a Cruicial 128Gb which has worked 4 yrs flawlessly.

I connect my USB 3.0 external hard drive to my laptop and it works but after a few minutes of not using it the disk stops spinning and when I to use it again my computer locks up and after 30-60 seconds it disconnects and reconnects some times. Else I have to pull it out. If I use the drive without a to long pause in between it work perfectly fine but as soon as the drive stop spinning and has to spin up that is where it happened. that feature in the power options turn on where the power to usb does not turn off.
I will look to see it I can change the hard drive shutdown time in properties.

Basically i lost everything on my external HDD & the only way to get the drive working again was to format it, That fixed the problem the drive was having (Unknown why data got lost) but if i disconnect the drive & reconnect i get message (the drive is inaccessible & corrupted) Something like that cant remember the wording exactly as its not happening right now, but i know the problem will come back & i will once again lose all my data, as its happened 5 times over 2 week period..
If i restart the PC, after startup its the only drive that's not visible either in (This PC), (Disk Management) or in (Device Manager) which leaves me with no option but to disconnect & reconnect the drive in order for it to be visible & Accessible, Now sometimes it works fine but once it becomes inaccessible it stays that way unless i format it Losing all data once again ...
Relevant Information of Drive
3 Years old
On 24/7 (As i never turn PC Off)
Its a Iomega eGo 1Tb External HDD
I Used software Hard Disk Sentinel & it says the drive is Healthy & in good working Condition

I just completed an update installation on a desktop PC running Windows 7. Now my hard drives show up as removable drives.
Normally this is due to the need to install an AHCI driver. And that is normally the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver for Intel chipsets. The driver was installed in Windows 7.
Is this a case where I need to manually install a new IRST Driver for Windows 10? If so, should I uninstall the existing first, or will the new one overwrite the old?

I have multiple hard drives on my machine with a power switch between the PSU and drive itself. None of these drives are boot drives except the drive that holds the OS. Yet, W10 will not see any of these drives just by turning on the power switch. I have to switch on the HDD, and then go through the whole startup process to get W10 to see it. External USB drives are seen straight away. I don't understand why this is as I can see no difference between this system, and switching on external eSATA drives on my old W7 machine which always worked OK ?

I upgraded my windows 7 computer to windows 10. I have an external hard drive that I am unable to open. When I connect it to the computer now, a reformatting window pops up asking to do this. Obviously, I don't want to delete the data on there as I used this drive as my backup. How can I go about opening this drive?
I checked on someone's else computer running windows 7 and my data is there, but my friend upgraded his computer to windows 10 and now I can't transfer data that way.
The hard drive is a WD Scorpio, model WD25000BEVS. Don't know if that is useful. I am wondering if part of the issue is that I have this harddrive is from a previous laptop that ran windows vista. That computer failed bcs it was a subpar HP product. I literally baked the motherboard several times for it to work. I finally gave up and got a new computer but kept the drive. I should have reformated it but I only deleted everything but the user folder.
I am wondering if part of the issue is ownership of the drive. I know that when I first used this drive I had it take ownership of the hard drive. I know this can be done in window 10, but I can't seem to ever open properties of the harddrive while its plugged in.
