Drivers/Hardware :: CPU Running Extremely Hot
Feb 10, 2016
With Windows 10 showing up on more computers every day, I decided to take the leap and upgrade my operating system. I figured that I would need to know it in order to service my client's computers - however, doing so has provided me with a problem that I have been unable to solve.
I have seen many posts and "solutions" for laptops that have suddenly been running far hotter since upgrading to Win 10.
My situation is a little different, I am running a Dell Studio XPS 435T with the Core i7 920 with 12GB RAM, and HD5700 on the stock motherboard. The CPU is cooled by an aftermarket fan and heatsink (Arctic Freezer I believe). And yes, it is clear of dust bunnies.
When booting into Win 7 Ultimate my idle temp is 43C and at load gets to 65C however if I boot into Win 10 Pro my idle is 67C and at load easily jumps to 90C+.
I have also tried the "change CPU power" however dropping my CPU to 60% doesn't seem like a real solution to me..

I've had Windows for a few months now and never really had an issue until the past few days. Overall CPU performance/speed is way down. Firefox freezes then recoops every 2-3 minutes, adobe plugin constantly crashing, even to do things offline is crazy slow.
I downloaded Windows Defender probably a week or 2 ago and that is the only big change that I know of done on this computer. I used to run Malewarebytes, SuperAnti-Spyware and Advanced Windows SystemCare. But was told that Advanced Windows SystemCare was the devil and to try TFC (temp file cleaner) & MyDefrag instead. So now i'm running;
Windows Defender
MalewareBytes (free)
SuperAnti-Spyware(free)
TFC
MyDefrag
Is this combination making my computer un usable? Or something else?

I installed W10 on my laptop yesterday, a friend has problems with his copy of W10. Everything is fine for me, and he has now put W10 on again and all seems to working EXCEPT, he has not got a volume control icon in his taskbar - although sound IS working. I researched and told him about the wheeze of changing the text size in display - which has resolved that problem for many folk, but he found he could not move the cursor along the bar, and has also noticed that although the volume is set to 'on' where you select which icons appear in taskbar, there is a message saying 'audio service is not running'.

For some reason, my printer doesn't show up in applications such as Microsoft Word or Libre Office, although I'm sure that it's connected properly to the computer because it still lets me scan documents. When I troubleshoot the printer, I get this error message: "The Print Spooler service isn't running".

Upon start up my computer is extremely slow and I get this message "cannot connect to Windows service". I can't open any of my documents or connect to google chrome. If I let it sit for about 10 minutes I can access google chrome and my files. I have taken the computer into the local computer fix it shop and they said there were a couple of broken registry paths, no malware and everything ran fine for them. The first couple of time I used the computer after getting it back home it worked great but now I'm back to square one. This is extremely frustrating.

I have recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. My web browsing is extremely slow, I somehow feel that this started before the upgrade and may not be related to the upgrade. I have to refresh some pages as many as 10 times before the page will load and overall web browsing is extremely slow.

For some reason iexplore.exe consumes extremely high cpu resources. Only IE and only cpu. I have done a myriad of scans:
Roguekiller
TDSSKiller
ESET
Malwarebytes
Bitdefender
and none indicate a Trojan or rootkit. I have also deactivated most extensions and followed dozens of articles on the net. I know I am supposed to use Edge, but it lacks features that I want and has other limitations that make it cumbersome. Likewise Chrome and other browsers react differently for many of the sites I use.

I upgraded to Win 10 in late July, but lately realized maybe Microsoft might not be providing the updates to solve my current issues.
My computer is pretty old, and the hardware is the same as it came out of the box, other than attaching a spare hard drive. It is a Dell Dimension E520.
The processor is an Intel dual core e6300 @ 1.86 ghz, but Win 10 seems to only detect one core and is therefore only running at 1.86 ghz instead of the 3+ ghz I was expecting.
My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 940BW and my computer currently does not recognize it has a native resolution of 1440x900. I can only run 4:3 resolutions instead of the 16:10 resolutions I need.
I've already looked at the manufacturer's websites and they don't seem to support Win 10 drivers for these products.

I have windows 10 installed on a ssd drive and my boot time is around 2 minutes. I've tried everything that I could find online, such as: disable startup programs, enable fast boot etc. . I had some corrupt image files, but I repaired them using DISM and now 'sfc /scannow' is not returning any errors.
I want to mention that I did a clean install of windows 10(I did not upgrade it, I removed what I had before completely).
I had windows 7 which was booting really fast.
My system model is z97x-gaming 3 and I have 16GB RAM.

My Windows 10 laptop, which previously had Windows 7 (I upgraded through Windows Update) is now having problems with the file explorer. It all started last night, when I was listening to some music with the windows media player, then it froze, a windows popped up asking me if I wanted to end the process and I said yes. From there, it all went downhill. My File Explorer is now EXTREMELY slow, I open a folder and it takes 1 or 2 minute for a new window to even open. Then it takes like 2 more minutes for the new window to even show things. When it does load i can't even scroll up or down or open another subfolder because it freezes and shows "Not responding" at least 3 time before even doing something.
At first I thought it was a performance Issue, but Steam, Task Manager and even games work perfectly fine. Maybe it's worth to mention that my task manager sometimes displays as if my disk was being completely 100% used, but then it goes back to 98%, then back to 100% again, and after a while it calms down and displays the actual percentage. My HDD is more than half free.
Also, when I first installed Windows 10 I had a BSOD Issue. Managed to solve my issue through dump files provided by the W7F Diagnostic Tool. I am trying to back up my most important files to my external hard disk right now in case I have to reset/format my PC, but since the File Explorer is extremely slow, the estimated copy time is more than a day.
Google Chrome won't open and using the Windows 10 search tool at the bottom left makes File Explorer crash sometimes.

I have 6 user profiles on my Windows 10: One is 72.1GB in size, another is 39.0GB in size, one has a ? mark, one is 58.2GB and one is 11.4GB. The smallest one is the Default Profile at 2.12MB. Why my user profiles so enormous?

So up until this morning my Windows 10 desktop has been performing really well. When the machine is idle the CPU use is only in the 1-3% range.
For some reason my idle CPU use is now CONSTANTLY 30-40% (even after a reboot)! Task manager says its "Service Host: Local System (15)". If I expand this process in task manager it lists:
Why is this happening all of a sudden? I have all Windows Updates installed and I run an i7-3770 CPU.
My machine is now slow/sluggish with 30-40% being hogged by these services!
I don't have any Malware installed as I run Malwarebytes Premium and the scan comes back clean. Some goes for a full anti virus scan.

So I just took part in the Windows 10 Insider Preview a couple of days ago, and I have to say, Windows 10 is a great step up from Windows 8, they did an excellent job so far. There's just one problem: File Explorer is extremely hard to use. Not only does the file explorer freeze all the time (even on folders with almost nothing in them), when it does freeze, it goes back to the top of the folder when it unfreezes.
What I mean is that I can be half-way down a 260-count file folder, like this:
Then it will freeze, and after it unfreezes, it goes back to the top of the folder, like so:
Doing simple tasks such as moving, copying, renaming, deleting and even scrolling and clicking causes File Explorer to freeze, sometimes even when it's idle!
And what's weirder is that the glitch doesn't happen when your opening a file for a specific program (say you click 'open' in Word and you get the 'Open' dialog box where you can pick a file).
I posted this over to Windows Feedback too, but I don't think it supports user comments, so I'm posting here to see if there's any fix. If there's any fix for this, let me know. It's been annoying me for a while now.

I'm currently on a PC with a 250GB SSD (Samsung EVO850 M.2). Recently my PC suddenly was out of storage and I wondered why, since I though I still had at least half of the storage free.
So I decided to run WinDirStat to figure out which directories were taking up all the space. As you can see in the screenshot it shows completely different values for the used space by the C drive. For your info, I only have a C drive, no second disk or second partition.

From sometime in October, after an update, there have been periods, sometimes intermittent, sometime persisting for a long time, when Disk usage spikes up to 100%, and makes a lot of things unusable.
I did some researching, and disabled a bunch of stuff, like Windows notifications, Windows search, background intelligent transfer and superfetch, even OneDrive, but even on Windows 10 version 1511, Disk usage spikes to 100%, the offending application / service being anything from System to memory compression to 3rd party applications...
This is becoming extremely irritating, and my video playback or something else stutters a lot when disk usage jumps up, often at chronic levels, then backs down, or stays at that usage for some time.

Recently I have noticed that my computer is EXTREMELY SLUGGISH after I wake it up out of sleep mode. It runs very very slowly. Rebooting is the only thing that fixes the sluggishness but then it happens again once my computer is put to sleep and then wakes up.
My computer is an Alienware Area 51 R2. I upgraded to windows 10 about a month ago without any problems. I have the Hibernate feature turned off as the files required to preserve my computer state during hibernation take up far too much space on my tiny 120 GB SSD that windows is installed on (all my games and other stuff are installed to the 1.5 TB standard platter-based hard drive) Sleep function remains enabled though.
I have a pair of NVIDIA Geforce GTX 980 graphics cards and am using the latest graphics drivers with them (358.50 according to the latest update i got).
Defragmenting (and in the case of SSD, trimming it) have not worked.

I have a workstation with wifi connection. It has worked flawless with Windows 7.
When I did a clean windows 7 install and upgraded to Windows 10, the signal strength varies extremely. Even with two meters between router and wifi card, it might loose connection.
I have tried two netcards and two routers. No problems before, huge problems afterwards.

I switched from chrome to firefox since chrome was draining the battery of my xps 13 (i5, 4GB). Battery life after switching to firefox is significantly better, but performance wise, everything is so sluggish while using firefox. It even lags when I tried to open a new blank tab- took like have a second after I clicked the "plus" sign to open new tab, then opens the tab in segments. The lag also happens to almost every command I have for firefox.

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this but anyway, I've noticed that Firefox is extremely slow when using Youtube when it comes to loading videos, but when I use Edge on Windows 10 it load just quickly without problems.
Any way to get Firefox to go faster?

I recently updated some drivers on my Acer Aspire 5750g:
-Nvidia GeForce GT 520m
-Broadcom SD card reader
-Dolby Digital audio driver
This was 3 days ago now and I've been having issues closing applications since. Full screen games in particular tend to fill my desktop with a black box equal to the games resolution, I can't click anything behind the box and it is above ANY windows I'm running. Usually the windows will take upwards of 10 minutes to close, however it can be longer.
Games can't be closed with task manager even as escalated user from any tabs, error returned is "Permission Denied".
I've uninstalled the Broadcom SD card reader driver since as apparently it's prone to memory leaks, my SD card reader had never worked before driver installation anyway.
The issue tends to happen after the computer has been on for a while. It gets worse as a process called "System and compressed memory" starts taking up more ram. I've attempted to stop "System and compressed memory" from doing so by disabling fast-boot as another forum post suggested, however it made no/minimal difference.

Noticed that Microsoft Edge being extremely slow in opening applications or loading web pages or is it just me? Sometimes it takes ten to thirty seconds to open webpages with the dreaded spinning circle. It would be a while before I could clean install due to lack of funds but I wonder if it's my 25/25 internet or just edge being the culprit?

I have noticed this problem come up on my Dell 7537 (Check out my profile for details) when I close the lid to put the computer to sleep, the HDD light turns off, but the fan continues to run, even after several hours. When I open the lid back up, it is just a black screen where I have to hold the power button to do a hard reset. The same thing happens with initiating a shutdown sequence, although that one only does it some of the time.
