Drivers/Hardware :: Cannot Safely Remove External Drives
Jun 5, 2015
In recent weeks, it has become impossible for me to safely remove my external drives. (Mostly, I use Western Digital Passports, Passport Ultras, etc).
I am using Windows 10.
I close all of my programs and folders. I get the "busy" message and to try again later. I run Unlocker on the drives, and Unlocker shows no activity or actions that I can take. I bring up my task manager and nothing is running. I try to safely eject from the WD utility and it doesn't work. I try to eject by going to my computer, right clicking on the drive, and ejecting from there. Sometimes I simply wait for half an hour, read some articles, try again. I get the same "busy" or can't shut down message.
I read online that I could try to Device Manager, click on the drive, and under policies select "Optimize for Performance." However, the computer must restart for changes to take place, and when i've tried, I get stuck on an infinite "Restarting" screen.
I read somewhere that I can try to empty a hidden recycle bin on my external, but I can't seem to reveal it?

I just upgraded to Windows 10 1511 (November Update), and saw the new (modernized) Safely Remove icon in the system tray - and the problem, it's not working properly.(I know, it's a Windows 7 Screenshot, I found it online, it's just for reference). As we can see from the comparison, mine only shows the second row, that being the device description (Name and drive letter), and no longer shows "Eject Storage Device".
So the safely remove icon in the system tray is now practically useless. I search over, and found no one with the same issue, nor did I find any direct fix. I shutdown and reboot a couple of times, tried different USB devices and ports, I also did try a couple of related tweaks, like changing the removal policy, and scan for hardware changes, etc - but still, no luck.Though note, the eject function is still available through file explorer:

I just upgraded from Windows 7 PRO to Windows 10. I notice that my external USB 3.0 drives can't be found. Before the upgrade it was ok. The only external device that does show is a Sandisk FIT USB 2.0 stick.

My HP Pavilion all-in-one computer does not recognize my Seagate external hard drive after I installed Windows 10. Everything worked well with the Windows 8 but neither system will recognize the other once I upgraded to Windows 10.

Even without any flash drives connected to my PC, it still displays this. Didn't happen when I was back in Windows 7.

When I use the Safely Remove Hardware to remove, for example a USB flash drive, I do not get the notification that the device can be removed. I used to get this in Win 8.1 and I still get it in Win 7.
Is there a way to enable the message? (I know a lot of people don't want the message but I do).

After a system refresh of Windows 10 all external disk storage drives, Micro SD and USB are listed twice in file explorer. This is a common problem, reported many times in forums and community support web sites. Could a solution be to reload file explorer. Is this possible and where would I find the download?

Windows 10. I can't find the eject hardware icon anywhere. Under windows 7 it was in the system tray at bottom right.
1. So where is that eject hardware icon?
2. I'm assuming that mice and keyboards can be removed at any time safely as there is no data transfer. Is that correct?

I just received my MSI laptop with Windows 10 and I'm still feeling around on how to use the new OS (upgraded from Windows 7). I plugged in my ext. HDD and something popped up asking something along the lines of "What do you want to do with this?". I was like "Okay, everything's going fine so far."
The problem came when I wanted to eject my HDD though. I couldn't find the icon in the little notifications area with the arrow. I couldn't eject the HDD from "This PC" either. In the end, I just unplugged it, since there wasn't anything too important on it.
I've tried enabling "Quick Removal" in the device manager, but that checkbox doesn't even show up. Instead, it's replaced with the "Write-caching policy" options. I've also tried turning the notifications on in the taskbar, but that doesn't work either. I turned on task manager, safely eject..., and location, but none of them show up. I've restarted my computer as well.

I have set my external hard drives to performance mode, and recognize the warning that I won't be able to simply unplug them. Basically, I have to use the little green safely remove hardware icon. Nothing new. In Windows 10 however, when an external drive is attached, and I go to eject it using the safely remove hardware, they are always grayed out and I'm unable to do so. Is there another setting I need to do, or is Windows 10 saying that even with the performance boxes checked, I can still remove drives without "safely removing them."

I have created Eject "N", etc for each drive letter from G-Z and they all work. They will safely remove my external HDDs. I have also created a context menu entry for Safely Remove > and it has a string value for subcommands, none of which will show when hovered upon. I need to move all of my Eject entries under the Safely Remove in order to keep my context menu clutter free.how to do this?

My taskbar shows that I can "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media". I don't have anything plugged in. Selecting the message tells me that I can "Eject Nvidia GTX 970". Wouldn't that be odd? It's the friggin' video card! I'm partly ready to select that option, just to see what the computer would do. Oh, that's right: without a video card, I wouldn't be able to see what the computer is doing..Why does Windows 10 think that my PCIe card, the only one that's been in this machine, the one that's been there BEFORE W10 came along, why does W10 want to eject my card?

Any way to hide it for good? Not disabling it, because that could cause some trouble, just that doesn't show in the tray? A .reg file would be awesome.
I want this for 2 reasons: First, I don't use it, I use USB Disk Ejector; and second because it's wasting space. And don't worry, everything in there has a purpose, as myself installed everyone of them.

My Maxtor external hard drive is not showing under This PC, but is under Device Manager. Updating the driver comes back as driver is up to date. Changing Bios setting between UEFI and Legacy do not make a difference. Using a different USB port does not make a difference.
I can get full access to the drive if I boot up LinuxMint from a USB stick.
Microsoft says this is a manufacturers driver problem.
Acer says this is Windows problem.

I recently upgraded my PC to windows 10 and every since have been unable to access any USB external drive. The laptop picks up the drives and acknowledges that they are there and working but they do not appear in file explorer. I have looked in disk management and the drives are there and healthy. The USB ports work 100% as i have plugged in keyboards etc to test and all the drives i've tried work with other computers. I've reinstalled windows twice. Ran various disk cleanup utilities, checked for hidden drives etc.I need to upload video files to my laptop to edit for work.

This morning I tried to login to my windows machine, windows 10 pro, intel i5 3.30ghz, 12gb RAM, 2TB HD. and kept telling me password was incorrect. I then removed windows password thru other admin user, and now all external hd's except for c: drive all lecked by bitlocker. Never installed or activated it.
I have 2 internal sata drives and 2 usb drives locked. I have gone to control panel, bitlocker, and tried to unlock drives, tried to do a search for key id on pc and nothing is found. My raw files are in the backup drives.

My new windows 10 only sees my PC - when searching for my files in Explorer, it cannot 'see' my two external drives when I plug them in. I've looked in Device Manager and they are not showing in there either. How can I tell Win 10 to access my external drives?
I thought Win 10 would automatically spot my external drivers the moment I plugged them in? Then it would go search for and install the appropriate drivers - but it isn't doing that..

With Win7 I used to open one external drive, then through My computer locate the other drive. I would have each drive on its own window. I could then select relevant files on one drive copy and paste into the other drive. With Win10 if I click on File explorer I can open one external drive, where can I locate the other drive to put in a separate window. If I click on the other drive, it just opens it in the same window. Win7 and previous versions used to be so simple.

Windows 10 OS using NVidia graphics and Realtek sound. This morning after a windows update ran , I have no sound. Troubleshooting shows that a solution maybe to reinstall 2 drivers from Realtek and NVidia. I tried the Auto fix solution but problem persists. On the Device Manager it is showing an orange warning triangle on both drivers, saying reinstall. Code 18. As I said the Auto update install does not rectify the problemCan I safely uninstall the drivers ? And then how do I reinstall them ?

Since upgrading to W10, My puter will no longer load when I have my external hard-drive attached. When I switch on my puter, I get a black screen with the message 'Non-System disk or disk error, Replace and strike any key when ready'.
When I reboot with the ext HD disconnected the reboot is fine and W10 loads no problem. If I reconnect the Ext HD while the puter is up and running, no problem, and both the computer and now attached external hard drive function perfectly.
I have tried reformatting the external hard drive but I still have the same start-up problem when the ext HD is attached on start-up.

Windows Search returning no results on one of my external harddrives. I have already:
Tried indexing the HDD and rebuilding.Non-indexing and rebuilding.Indexing only specific folders on the HDD and rebuilding.Specifically disabling indexing for this drive in the drive's properties.Checked that I have the appropriate permissions on the drive (they are identical to my other HDDs).
Crude example of my problem:
I am looking for the following file, A:Example est.txt.I am inside the A:Example folder.I search for "test", "*" or "txt".It says there are no results.
And it says "no results" instantly - it doesn't appear to even try.
I do not have a second drive with sufficient space to move the contents to do a format - so I'm looking for non-destructive solutions.

After win10's installation my external monitor has black borders.
This was happening also with win7 after installation. with catalyst control center [which I cannot open anymore in win 10... as I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD4670 which is not supported] I could easily fix the issue:
- open Catalyst Control Center
- go to My Digital Flat-Panels
- choose Scaling Options
- slide the slider all the way to the right (so that it is a 0%)
So, this is a monitor scaling options (or border padding I think in windows) issue that I need to fix. I search everywhere but I cannot find any fix in win10.

My PC performance with Windows 10 is very good except when it isn't
One of the things that is perplexing me is that my external hard drives seem to be impacting my startup performance. Following start up Task Manager performance tab shows one of my external drives (G) working at nearly 100% and the noisy disk drive suggests that it is working hard. The disk transfer rate also indicates movement between the PC and the drive. This is despite Drive G being used only as a storage/backup device with no automated actions configured. Yesterday Drive G became very hot as a result.
If I disconnect Drive G, my second external hard drive Drive F takes its place and task manager shows the same activity as previously shown on G. If both drives are connected F shows no activity.

I'm using build 10240, and in the first install, it installed the Realtek audio drivers.
The problem with these drivers is that they completely mess up the sound in my headphones.
Anyways, I've tried : Uninstalling the audio manager in control panelDeleting the oem#.infUninstalling the drivers in Device Manager
None of these work. When I uninstall it, the driver is just reinstalled when my computer reboots.

I'm having quite a bit of trouble removing the generic bluetooth drivers that Windows installs for you. Those have to be gone if I want to install Toshiba Bluetooth Stacks, which I need in order to use my Wii U Pro Controller in my computer. I've gone through a few methods to try this out and all have failed.
I started out by simply uninstalling the drivers on the device manager (or whatever it is called in English). Didn't work, as the drivers were back when I had to plug in my dongle to complete the installation for TBS. When I tried this in Windows 7, it worked flawlessly, yet in Windows 10 this method did not work.
Afterwards, I tried deactivating the forced driver signature, as well as make it so Windows Update doesn't automatically download any drivers it finds suitable. On top of this, I traveled into the INF folder of my Windows folder to do steps that Microsoft recommended: rename bth.inf to bth.inf.old and bth.pnf to bth.pnf.old. With all this, it should in theory work right? Nope, it didn't. Not even after a reset.
My last attempt involved unplugging my PC from the Internet as a first step, followed by everything else listed above and then a reset. The drivers were still back, bth.inf and bth.pnf somehow magically appearing in my Windows folder when I have no Internet access. I'm at a loss as to what I'm supposed to do.
