Drivers/Hardware :: Cannot Read USB Drive (The Parameter Is Incorrect)
Aug 1, 2015
I am using am iMac with Bootcamp running Win 7. I have just upgraded to Win 10 with no problems. Except I can now not read my 2 x WD USB external drives. I am getting "the parameter is incorrect" error. In disk management it says the drives are active but RAW. If I connect the 2 drives to any other machine either Win 7 or 10 they are fine, so no fault with the drives. These 2 drives have always been used on the PC in question when running Win 7.
I have tried changing the drive names etc but still cannot read.
My only solution may be to connect the drives to another PC, back up, then format the drives?

So, my Windows 10 tech preview, starting with build something, says 'You need to verify your identity' under "Accounts". When I try to do that, it pops up with a window saying "the parameter is incorrect". This makes services like mail, onedrive, albums and so on unusable since I am not authenticated

I first got an error saying "Critical error: cortina and some apps may not work." To fix that I turned on safe mode and restarted. Now, I can't log in. Whenever I try to, and I press enter, it says "the parameter is incorrect"

I'm stuck with my print spooler that doesn't want to start. It was working fine before the upgrade. I get the following message when going to the "view services on local computer" and try to start the print spooler service:
Windows could not start the Print Spooler service on Local Computer. Error 0x80070057: The parameter is incorrect.
I get the following message in the event viewer:
The Print Spooler service terminated with the following error:

In the details view I see the following info:

I have checked the following registry entry as described in [FIX] Windows Could Not Start The Print Spooler Service. This didn't work. How to make the print spooler service work?

I did an Upgrade from W7 Pro 64 bit to Windows 10 and it worked fine but the three printers attached to the computer no longer work. The print Spooler is stopped and all efforts to restart it fail with Error 0x80070057 "Incorrect parameter".

Recently, I connected a new SSD as a USB drive. It shows "Write Protected" in windows 10. However, same one if I connect to Windows 8.1, then the write protection is not there. Can not do driver update under windows 10 as it is write protected.

I have a program that I wanted to install into my Win 10 Pro Machine (64 Bit) and have found that the disk can not be read by the DVD/CD-ROM Drive. I also tried it in another Windows 10 Computer (64 Bit) and it also can't read the disk. The disk worked fine under Windows 7, in both the same computers. The drive works as it reads other CD/DVD's.
The disk is good as it works perfect in an other Windows 7 (32 Bit) and Vista computers (32 Bit). Computer is up to date with builds etc.

I have an odd issue where a Samsung SSD that is no longer in my system is still showing. The weird thing is if I bring up the properties, and then populate the fields of the drive (by pressing the populate button), it shows the capacity of the newer drive which is double the size. This drive is not a Samsung drive though. So I'm not sure what's going on here - see picture where it clearly states (at the top) that I'm looking at the properties of a 250GB Samsung drive, but the populated fields show it to be a 480GB drive.

I installed Win10 recently on my PC.
When I try to save to local C drive (Documents) I get an error:
"SAVE AS ... You don't have permission to modify files in this network location. Contact the administrator per [sic] permission to make these changes."
I have looked at the C drive and can see no obvious issues, e.g. 'read only' is not set.

I was just creating a folder on my C drive (SSD) when I noticed that the attribute is set to read-only. I've tried clearing the attribute many ways using the link below but to no avail. Right-clicking on the folder does not show the option to Take Ownership. how to correct it?
Remove read-only attribute from folder - Windows 8.1

Since I upgraded to windows10 I am unable to watch movies from a DVD. I can read other kinds of disks just fine, just not movies. For instance, I wanted to watch the sixth Harry Potter movie. So I enter my DVD but my laptop just says there is no disk entered. I thought there was something wrong with my DVD at first. But it works fine in all other devices I have at home. So then I thought the problem must be my disk drive. But then I inserted the bonus DVD of the movie, and this one worked fine. WHAT? How is this even possible, both are DVD's, just the bonus disk doesn't have a movie on it. I tried this with all the harry potter movies we have at home and the same occurred each time, the movie DVD does not work but the bonus DVD (with behind the scenes and whatever) works fine. I have searched all over the internet and haven't found a solution. The only thing I find is people of which their Disk Drive isn't found anymore. But this is not my problem.
P.S.: It's a laptop, the details can be found on my profile I believe. And I wasn't really sure in which thread I should post this. As it isn't really a hardware problem, I don't think it's a driver problem (my pc says drivers are up to date) so I assumed it must be a software problem.

I have several hard drives on my PCs; some are physical, some are partitions. In every PC I've upgraded, W10 marks these as RO. I go through the ritual of setting permissions to Full and marking RW, but occasionally a drive will revert to RO. I can't find a Take Ownership option for drives, only folders. Am I looking in the wrong place?

This is the error I get in Windows 10:
The last USB-device you plugged in this computer did not work properly and is not recognised by windows...
So I can read and write with Mac OS, but not with Windows. In the device manager of Windows, I cannot see the device either.

When I was running Windows 7, my system had a small solid state C drive that did not have enough space for windows 10 upgrade. I got a larger 2TB regular hard disk and used the manufacturer's software to clone the old Windows-7 SSD C drive to the new 2TB and then upgraded to Windows 10.
Now under windows 10, when go into defrag, the C Drive shows as a Solid State drive and of course windows does not want to optimize it.
The new drive definitely is not SSD. I assume somehow that setting was cloned from the old disk.
Is there either a way to change the C drive to a regular "hard disk drive" or force windows to defrag what it thinks is a SSD?

Problem: When I click on my H: drive or try to access it from the command line, it gives me an access denied error. However, all of the applications that I have installed on that drive run without issue. So, there is some access there. (See attached images. The first shows the hard drive state in diskmanager and in windows explorer. The second image shows the minecrafter launcher profile (that it is stored in H: and the application running, proving that there is some access.
System: Home built PC: (C:) 240GB SSD for OS, (E:) 1TB HDD for file storage and backup, (H:) 1TB HDD for large applications and video editing files. All drives are Simple, Basic, and none have encryption. All use the SATA connectors.
Process: I had Windows 7 Home 64 bit with, among many other things, Comodo Internet Security, Virtualbox, ImageDisk.
During the upgrade process, I noticed that Windows 10, during the upgrade, ran the file system check and fix "problems" on the H: drive.
(Side note) Having forgotten to uninstall Comodo before the upgrade, I did not have network after the upgrade. The fix was non-trivial as I had to use a second computer to download the unofficial comodo uninstaller. Reboot. Uninstall the network devices. Reboot. And once Windows 10 was up and running, it reinstalled the network devices and the network was available.
Still, whether before or after the Comodo uninstall and reinstall, the uninstall of ImageDisk, or the uninstall of the Virtualbox network device, I have no access to the H: drive.

I was moving video files (AVI) from an external backup drive (WD Element) to another external backup drive (Seagate expansion) after having moved another video file from my laptop (Acer) to that Seagate external drive. The night before I had moved some video files from the WD to the Seagate with no problem but using a different laptop (Sony). These video files are all rather large and I can tell that the space is still being allocated on the Seagate because while the folder cannot be seen the space that was there is still being used by the Seagate because I am missing over 100GB which would be about the size of that now missing folder.
What happened was there was a message that the Seagate drive could not be recognized while the files were in the process of being moved to that drive from the WD. This is after I had already moved a video file of about 26GB with no problem into that now missing folder. When I saw the message I attempted several times to move files to that Seagate drive but I could not so I unplugged the Seagate drive from that laptop (Acer) then reinserted it into the usb port. I got a repair message that said it needed to be repaired because some files were corrupted and that no data would be lost but the drive would be unavailable during the repairs so I checked ok. It took only about 30 seconds and it said the repairs were completed and the drive was available but I noticed that the folder that I was moving the video files to was not gone.
As I stated there are more than 100GB of files in that folder some are video and others are audio recordings that were created by using the myrecording (audio and video) features of the Acer laptop and they are very important so I need to figure out if they can be retrieved from that Seagate drive. I have not copied anything else onto that Seagate drive but I have plugged it into the Acer computer to ensure it is being recognized. Both the external drives WD and Seagate are plug and play that are powered from the usb -- they have no power adapters.

I downloaded and installed Win10 and I was able to use my computer normally. Ran CCCleaner. Now, after entering the same password I've used for years, the screen keeps saying it is incorrect. I changed passwords and retried with no luck. So my computer is useless as I can't get to my desktop to make any security changes or uninstall Win10.
how to get a restore disk to reinstall (would this even work?) I'd like my desktop computer back !

I mean this happens every one or two shutdowns and startups. What happens is when I try to shutdown, Windows appears to have shutdown. Screen is not detecting anything (Because technically nothing is running) but the only difference is, my entire computer is still running. I am not sure how this is possible but I can confirm this is a Windows 10 unique problem. And now consecutively, after this 'incorrect' shutdown. When I try to boot up, when it gets to the Windows loading spinning beads screen, the computer shut's down abruptly. And I have to boot it up again. This sort of things happens every few cycles and is 100% identical to the last one.I have tried a clean windows 10 install (Formatted my SSD) and the EXACT same thing occurs.I also cannot update to the latest update as it gets to a certain percentage, around 20% and restarts with a message saying it couldn't complete the update and it is undoing changes.
All the outlined problems aren't critical and are definitely unique to my computer. Because I have Windows 10 on my other machines, and they can update and do everything just fine thus far.
Quick edit:
My PC specs are:
p9x79 mobo
gtx 970 4GB vram
i7 4930k @ 3.4ghz
32GB RAM @ 1600MHz
And all my drivers are up-to-date (I do this sort of thing quite often)

Getting error message, "That password is incorrect. Make sure yo're using the password for you Microsoft account. You can always reset it at account.live.com/password/reset."
I just upgrade after purchasing this laptop 2 days ago. After the first restart of the successful upgrade I can't log in. I'm using the right password and have changed it and used that with no success. I can't do anything with this computer and like I said just bought it and need it for work.

I was working on my laptop just fine this morning and when using a specific program noticed it was saving work as a previous user. So I went to accounts and changed the user name to mine. Now when I start the computer and am prompted for password it just says "incorrect password" even though it still shows the "password hint" as the same as it used to be and the user pic is still the old one.
I am freaking out as I have deadlines due today and can't access my computer!

I had windows 8 on my toshiba laptop and due to having lost my glasses for a week I upsized the screen to make everything larger - I didnt think about this and then free upgraded to Windows 10. Now my display is stuck at the bigger size which causes issues with allsorts of programs for example I may not be able to see the OK box to click it as it is below edge of screen however if I go into screen settings to try and reduce the size it says I am set to the smallest size .....
