Drivers/Hardware :: Convert MBR Disk To GPT Via UEFI Shell?
Sep 7, 2015
I did something terrible to my tablet, I converted the partition from GPT to MBR in a desperate try to install windows 7.Now tablet is not reading any usb I plug in, and of course I cannot format disk again because it doesn't recognize anything, always booting at uefi shell.

I have a configuration where win 10 is installed on SSD but the Users folder is on a dynamic disk on HDD and the linking is made by a hard junction link from C: to D. I have removed paging on D as well as protection. Hence, I am able to remove all volumes of the dynamic disk and convert it back to a basic disk and format it.The problem is that I would like to keep all my installed programs (and settings, preferably). I have copied the Users directory to an external disk and copied them back to D after conversion. This seems to lead to a nonfunctional situation where I cannot even add a new user and most programs (even not all windows tools) do not work. What would be the best approach to avoid reinstalling the programs and to keep existing users?

I know I need to disable secure boot in order to change the boot sequence. I ran into an issue trying to install Windows 10 on a GPT partition - it said it couldn't do it. So...after much searching, i learned (??) i need to use diskpart to clean the partitions to create one large unallotted space which would then allow me to install Windows. My question is, can i convert the disk to mbr and install Windows to it that way and run it in that mode. If i can do that, what would be the command to do that? > convert mbr after the clean command?? What about enabling secure boot?? Can i do that if i have installed Windows under MBR rather than GPT?

Just converted my systems to Windows 10. Working well, so far. I would like to install 4TB disks on a couple of the systems and understand that I need to use UEFI. Looks like my ASUS P8Z68-U GEN 3 MB supports UEFI, but I don't understand how to enable it. The other system has ASUS B85M-E mother board. I've seen some one paragraph descriptions, but they don't really walk me through the process.
1 - Can I upgrade my existing system without a complete Windows 10 reinstall? I have lots of apps installed so I'd like to avoid complete system rebuilds.
2 - Due to legacy use of Mirrored drives, I'm using the Intel RAID stuff, although I no longer need it. Will that be a problem? SSD and other disks are JBOD. I'd like to get rid of that, but I think that does require a complete system reinstall since disabling the RAID wipes the disk.
Looking for step by step process to convert a system to UEFI to support 4TB disks?

I've had Win10 installed for ages and no problems until Upgrade 1511 came along. How come Windows 10 worked all that time and now refuses to upgrade?
Upgrade to Windows 10 Home, version 1511, 10586
error message:
"Windows 10 couldn't be installed
*Windows couldn't be installed because this PC has an unsupported disk layout for UEFI firmware."

I've about 4 SATA HDD's that I've removed from computers that I've junked -- all SATA about 12 TB.
Is it possible to build an enclosure and create a NAS drive -- I can easily make external USB drives but I think a NAS storage system would be better. What I need to do --should in theory be easy just need some sort of network card and an OS.

I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 (32Bit), Since, I have lost access to my DVD drive. The Device Manager shows:
The drive has always been connected and worked fine with Windows 7; the hardware has never been altered or messed about with.
So I decided to check the UEFI Firmware Settings via Settings>Recovery>Advanced Set Up>Troubleshoot>Advanced Options I don't get the option to enter UEFI Firmware Settings; All I get is the System Restore, System Image Recovery, Startup Repair, Command Prompt and Startup Settings.

I noticed something peculiar this morning. The Explorer right-click context menu is inconsistent on what it displays.
For example, when I right-clicked on one folder, it displays the "Add to Windows Media Player List" and "Play with Windows Media Player" options.
However, when I right-clicked on another folder, these options are absent.
Whether these options appear in the context menu seems to be entirely arbitrary. About half of the folders have the options, and the rest do not.

Available free online, the Classic Shell Start Button corrected Windows 8's most glaring fault by giving you an excellent free Start Button. One of my Windows 10 laptops still has it.
You can still press the Windows key (bottom left corner, between the Ctrl and Alt keys) to get the Windows 10 Start Button.
Classic Shell works well with Windows 10 and is a possible last resort if you can't get the Windows 10 Start Button to work.

Is there a known way to create your own custom shell folders or "special folders?" Default shell folders are Documents, Pictures, Downloads, etc. The benefit of a shell folder is you can place it in a Users' Personal Folder, but have the location actually be in another location (even another drive).
An example of a program adding a shell folder would be Zune with "Podcasts."
A shell folder can be identified by its "Location" tab in the properties menu.
I'd like to create my own shell folders to things like "Books" or "Programs" etc. with kinds of files I make. Sort of like a library.

So my mail app was not opening links. So I looked up how to reinstall the mail app. Got to this: [URL]
I uninstalled the apps, then ran the powershell command: Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers| Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml”} to reinstall the mail app.
A bunch of red errors appeared in the prompt and now my start menu, notifications, onedrive,... won't work.
How do I restore these functions? sfc also does not work in Powershell but does work in CMD. Also, it does nothing.

My PC was running Windows 8.1 with no problem. I upgraded to Windows 10. Installation went fine, but right after I logged in to windows, it started to continuously run a shell script in background. A shell window pops up on the computer screen every few seconds for a fraction of a second.
This happens everytime the computer is powered on. Not only this is very disturbing, it also resets any text windows that are open at that time. So, if I am typing a password, it comes in the middle and wipes off the text from the text window.
I have tried disabling all startup programs and several running processes, nothing seem to solve the problem.

Some weeks ago I converted to win10, I did not like it so I reverted to win 7.I like windows media centre which I use a lot. I also found in win 10 that my home movies which are mod files did not convert properly ie the thumbnails did not show what the content was.The upshot is that I lose on the conversion.I read recently that Msoft are going to force convert in the future and I do not want that to happen. What do I have to do to get them to respect my wishes?

So I recently bought a ssd to add to my pc so that I could add my OS and some other files on to the ssd and keep my old hdd as storage. After finally getting the OS onto the ssd and being able to boot from it I tried to transfer all of the files back to the original hdd from the backup I had made from the ssd after cloning the drive. Once completed the hdd was no longer showing up at all in my computer so I went into disk management and tried to set a path for it, but it was now split into two partitions (I am assuming because I took the backed up ssd and put it onto a hdd because the size of one of the partitions is the size of the ssd). I tried formatting both partitions and then extending it to combine them but whenever I do this it tells me there is not enough space on the disk to complete the operation.

I recently purchased a Samsung M3 slimline 1TB hard drive to backup and create a system image of my PC onto. I plugged it in and it installed all the necessary device driver software however when I go to create a system image or backup I get this message:
Windows Backup skipped backing up system image because one of the critical volumes cannot be included for backup. Check that volume is online and is formatted NTFS.
After going into drive manager I saw that I had a volume/partition called ESP which was FAT32 and was 500MB. How do I change this to NTFS so the backup/system image works and out of interest what even is ESP? When a tick box comes up on what I would like to create a system image on, the C: drive box is ticked as well as the ESP box however they are blanked out so I have to select them.

So, not sure what it is that I did but something to do with one of the Microsoft services had me sign in using my email and password to the live Microsoft stuff (might have been trying to play solitaire).
Now when I boot up my desktop, it's always asking me for my password which I don't want to deal with as it's quite the extreme password. I think prior to signing in on Solitaire Win 10 never asked me for a password as it was being used local account.
How do I switch it back to being a local account so that I don't have to sign in to my desktop every time that I start it up.

I've some AVI and MP4 files with external .SRT subtitles that I'd like to convert to MKV with embedded subtitles (not forced). That way I can forget about the .srt files that don't always play properly on MEZZMO / SERVIIO or PLEX when streaming. The embedded ones always work properly !!.What's the best setting for Handbrake so I don't lose (or lose minimal) quality when re-encoding -- MP4->MKV should be almost a 1:1 copy but I'm not sure of the settings.
the subtitles all work though when embedded even if the original .SRT file didn't when streamed. (VLC always works BTW but I want to play these files on REMOTE DNLA devices).

I am currently trying to convert my mSATA SSD from MBR to GPT. I have downloaded EaseUS partition master and can see that I can convert the disk using the software. My question is however if this is possible to do with my mSATA drive that my PC boots from and has Windows 10 installed or does it have to be a drive that is not booted from. I know there are lots of threads on this however none specify of this is possible using the drive you are booted from.

I've just installed a 3TB Toshiba hdwd130 and it's only showing as 1TB?
I've used 2TB disks before, but this is the first 3TB disk I've tried to use.
The disk controller on the MB is an RS880P.
I've checked and the drivers all appear to be the latest.

I had Windows 10 Enterprise on a ssd 480gb sandisk ultra II but It's corrupted, I can't even launch Windows or repair tools.
I've managed to run repair tools and get a command prompt, as diskpart says, my disk is on a raw partition now, and it shows the following:
Total space on disk: 448gb
Space available on disk: 448gb
I've read something that on raw filesystem Windows can't see the drive then I'm wondering, if diskparts says that the space available is the same tan total disk, does it mean that I've lost all my data? Is really important for me to recover the data.
I've installed Windows 10 on another drive, but the drive isn't recognized, not in diskpart, not in Windows explorer, and tried about 5-6 programs for recover data on raw disk/partition and none of them saw my disk.
The main question is if I lost all my data, because if not, I will give it to the shop for repair it.

I have a program that I wanted to install into my Win 10 Pro Machine (64 Bit) and have found that the disk can not be read by the DVD/CD-ROM Drive. I also tried it in another Windows 10 Computer (64 Bit) and it also can't read the disk. The disk worked fine under Windows 7, in both the same computers. The drive works as it reads other CD/DVD's.
The disk is good as it works perfect in an other Windows 7 (32 Bit) and Vista computers (32 Bit). Computer is up to date with builds etc.
