Drivers/Hardware :: Device Installation Settings

Nov 13, 2015

Something I checked after the upgrade from Build 10240 to Build 10586.3, is in Control PanelAll Control Panel ItemsSystem and went to Advanced Settings>>>Hardware>>>Device Installation Settings. First of all it's simpler now, and second of all, the upgrade reset mine to download drivers. There is no way in hell I'm gong to let Microsoft update MY drivers.

So this is a heads up to others with the same preference: Check your settings after the upgrade!

3. Disable Automatically get the device app...
As shown in the snapshot.

I want to do the above steps via registry (.reg file) or a .bat/.cmd file.

Drivers/Hardware :: Realtek Not Showing Recording Device Under Advanced Settings?

Oct 22, 2015

I've had this problem with my razer kraken headset with sound being played back through the mic. My friend has an identical pare that he had the same problem with. To fix it he simply went into Realtek HD Audo Manager and when to device advance settings and checked "Seperate all input jacks as independent input devices" and bam! NO more sound from his end.

I went to check to see if I could do the same and all I found under device advanced settings was playback devices. No recording devices.

Drivers/Hardware :: How To Disable Automatic Driver / Device Installation

Aug 6, 2015

This is not exactly win 10 specific question, i had same problem in win 7, but now that i'm on win 10, that problem is still there. Here's what's going on:

I have high-end gaming PC with GTX 980 and 4k monitor and 1080p monitor as secondary.

4k Monitor is connected via DisplayPort and other monitor is using HDMI

Both of those monitors have built-in speakers (actually i don't think 1080p monitor has speakers)

But here's the problem, windows 10 keeps automatically installing HDMI audio drivers and 50% of the time when i boot my system, all my software defaults to the stupid HDMI sound.

This is extremely annoying and i'm about to pull my hair out over this. All my media players default to monitor audio, even tho windows does not select it as "default device".

Also even tho other monitor doesn't have speakers, system still thinks that the monitor has speakers and sets it as audio device.

Also when i record gameplays using shadowplay or other recorder, lot of times there's no audio on videos, because screen recorders also default to that dumb hdmi audio. I can't be bothered to check audio every time i do something.

I really need a way to tell windows 10 to STOP doing that. Here's what i've done so far:

1. under playback devices, i have DISABLED both of the monitors as playback devices.
2. I have tried uninstalling + disabling drivers for both monitors in "device manager"
3. i used local group policy to force windows not to install drivers (gpedit.msc > administrative templates > system > device installation), then i grabbed the group ID from device manager and entered it there to prevent windows from installing drivers for any audio groups.

After step 3, drivers were not installed, but windows still shows both monitors in "playback devices", only difference is that in device manager it says that this device does not have drivers installed, but they're still showing up in "playback devices", therefore all my software is STILL able to use them as playback and some of my software, like winamp, still defaults to them.

Forgot to mention, that if I disable both of them in playback devices, windows automatically re-enables them at some point. probably at boot, but i can't be bothered to check every few seconds, i just want windows to STOP trying to tell me what's best, i like my Asus STRIX 7.1 headset + 7.1 Hi-Fi home theater speaker system, i don't need some tiny jurassic stereo speakers lol.

I want to punch whoever made this feature. I mean .. what kind of an caveman would buy high-end gaming PC with GTX 980 + 4k monitor and NOT have a proper sound card + headset? Did those low-brainers in microsoft seriously think that anyone using high-end gaming PC, would like to use HDMI as primary audio? that's just ridiculous!

I think my only option is to force windows to think that i'm not using HDMI so it won't even detect my monitors as audio devices, is that possible.

Drivers/Hardware :: How To Refine Display Settings After Installation

Oct 26, 2015

I have just downloaded and installed Windows 10. All is good except the default resolution seems too large. I have tried all the options available in Control Panel/Display/Screen Resolution but none work or are in proportion except the basic default 1024 x 768 setting though this is way to 'big' for me.

My monitor, an HP w1907v, appears to want 1440 x 900 at 60 Hz but all resolutions options available in Win 10 are at 64 Hz - not sure if this is the problem? The installed graphics driver is the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, a driver which the self-checking tool on the Nvidia website states is the correct driver for my old onboard graphics (Nvidia GeForce 6100 nForce 430).

I think I need to do something a little out of the ordinary. I cannot find a better driver but the resolution options are pants. Can I change the Hz from 64 to 60 and if so how, and will this offer the right resolution options for my monitor?

Drivers/Hardware :: No Audio Output Device Is Installed - No Realtek Device In DevManager

Sep 12, 2015

i have my ASUS X555LD for almost a year now, so as far as date is concerned my laptop shouldn't be too old to suffer such illness. So it came with Win8.1 x64 of course and just recently, as soon as Windows 10 was released, i upgraded quickly.

but right after i upgraded to Windows 10, my laptop became ill and had this errors:

1. i got BSoD Most of the Time, one would say CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED or UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION. there are times my laptop would freeze in the BSoD, not even the 0% would move to 100%. so i had no other choice but to force shutdown it, and sometimes after turning my laptop on again i end up at my BIOS with no HDD nor BOOT ENTRY listed. as i experimented, i had to press slightly hard on the right side of my Laptop where my HDD is Located just for my Laptop to re-read my HDD once again, as soon as i got back to Windows 10, i ran an HDD Check and nothing was wrong, no bad sectors or anything. this is confusing me as to how it is happening. so i somehow got used to BSoD since my Laptop frequently experience it. sometimes just a simple movement that would shake my laptop would turn into BSoD again, i suspect something like my HDD or loose or the likes. i dont really know.

2. after the BSoD Case, a week or three i guess. i started to loose Audio Ability. it was just this morning, the Volume Icon has a "RED X" on its icon and states "No Audio Output Device is installed.". and after checking my Device Manager, to my surprise the Built-in Audio Device (Realtek) is not there. i don't know how or why it happened but i can't get it back.

even checking the sound tab on the control panel doesn't bring out Audio Devices.

i was wondering if ASUS or the PC Store where i bought my Laptop would fix it for me as per warranty is involved ?

Drivers/Hardware :: Retrieve Device After Hitting Remove Device

Jan 17, 2016

I recently put my camera memory card into my computer to download photos. I couldn't open them and need to leave so hit "remove device" figuring that I'd go back later when I had more time to get them. When I went back and reinserted the card it didn't show up. I've tried to "add a device" but it still doesn't work. When I hit the device and printers icon it doesn't show up. What do I do?

Mouse Device Settings Not Staying Set

Aug 5, 2015

I have a laptop and use an external wireless mouse. With Windows 7 and 8 I had the mouse device settings set to "Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached" checked. I would turn on the laptop, get to my desktop and receive a notification that the internal device was disabled.

Since upgrading to Windows 10, I have noticed that disabling the internal device does not stick. Every time I turn on the laptop, I have to go to Mouse/Device Settings and check that box. Yes, I do click Apply when I check it and it does disable it. At least it does until I turn on the laptop the next time. How to get the setting to stick so I don't have keep checking that box?

Drivers/Hardware :: Purging All Drivers For Device Type?

Dec 2, 2015

Over the past few weeks I've been trying various Alfa Wi-Fi adaptors, and different drivers. I've now given up and bought a device (TP-Link) that has a driver built into Windows 10.

However, when I plugged it in it seems to have picked up on an Alfa driver, possibly as the chipset is similar.

Is there a way to purge all drivers for a device type, except the Microsoft ones?

How To Uninstall Old Device Drivers

Aug 4, 2015

The normal uninstall of old drivers in Device Manager isn't working. I am trying to update my Intel 7260AC Wi-Fi adapter to the latest Windows 10 drivers (18.12 from Intel's website). They won't install. The .exe runs but the drivers don't change and the new drivers aren't even listed in device manager to select. I can only select between two older driver versions that were once used under Win 8.1 (I upgraded).

When I try to uninstall the device, the check box to uninstall software isn't available. The device will uninstall but simply comes back with one of those two drivers. Is there another way to permanently remove them (e.g. where does Windows store driver software including registry entries). I would like to simply get rid of anything and try to get 18.12 drivers to install...I'm thinking they are somehow conflicting and preventing the install.

Drivers/Hardware :: DVD / CD-ROM Not In Device Manager

Sep 30, 2015

I have googled this all over the place and there are all sorts of issues with DVD / CD-ROM players no longer being recognized but I haven't come across the same problem I'm having.

I upgraded to Windows 10 64bit from Windows 7 64bit. One day while I was transferring data from my SSD boot drive to my HDD storage drive everything locked up, I got an error message (that I didn't save) and all of a sudden my HDD was no longer visible in My Computer. I ran into all sorts of issues following this and believed that something had corrupted during the data transfer so I opted to disconnect my HDD and do a fresh install of windows with a format on my SSD.

Everything was working well until one day the same thing happened with my DVD/CR-ROM drive, it just disappeared from My Computer. I went to install / check for updated drivers in Device Manager and I believe I clicked uninstall by mistake.

Now when I look at Device Manager there is not even a DVD/CD-ROM option (menu spot for it).

Above: So here you can see My Computer, there is my SSD Boot drive but the DVD / CD-ROM is not there

Above: The DVD / CD-ROM drive does not show up in Disk Management, I've tried rescanning drives, refresh, nothing. (As an aside, what are those unnamed disks???)

Above: Device Manger, there is not even an option to view DVD / CD-ROM drives.

Above: Regedit - A fix I saw was to check this registry for UpperFilters and LowerFilters both of which were not there so I didn't touch anything here.

So far I have done the following troubleshooting:

Turned off the PC and unplugged the CD/DVD drive from the Sata Port. Restarted the PC and loaded windows. Shut off the PC again and re-connected the CD/DVD drive.

When I started the PC back up I entered BIOS and the drive shows up under Sata Port 2 like it should:

ASUS DVD RAM GH75N

There is power to the drive, it opens and closes and if I put a disk in it spins up.

So this leads me to believe the drive is ok and the cable / port are good as it's being recognized.

I think my biggest concern is not being able to see a menu in Device Manager for DVD/CD-ROM drives. I'm not sure how it got removed or how to get it back.

I'm going to try and contact ASUS to see if they have specific drivers for this drive meant for Windows 10.

Drivers/Hardware :: DVD RW Not Seen In Device Manager Or This PC

Sep 24, 2015

Upgrade from win 7 pro 64 to 10 pro 64. All hardware and software was new, name brand and authorized at time of original build. The bios shows the drive as sata 3. I checked the windows advisor and the drive is rated as acceptable. It's an Asus sata dvd-+rw.I used every windows repair and diagnostic tool I could find to no avail. The only update for the dvd player was firmware which I installed. I tried switching the bios to auto play but it did nothing.

I did have problems with the upgrade. I could not get the upgrade icon although I had all the required files and had auto upgrades set, so I downloaded 10 to a dvd and did the upgrade. That's the last time the dvd player was recognized. It is working. Asus loads a mini os on it's mother boards called Speed Gate. I can use Speed Gate to to read file on a dvd but it wont execute.I tried making a recovery usb but it fails. I then tried reset but it disconnects the key board and mouse so I have to do a hard restart so reset fails too. I tried restarting with the win 10 dvd in the drive but it wasn't recognized. To update the bios the instructions say use the install disc. I tried using Speed Gate but could only see the list of files. It does give the option of using the asus update utility which should be in programs (apps in 10) but it isn't there.

Drivers/Hardware :: Audio Device Switching

Sep 27, 2015

Since upgrading from Windows 7, I have not been able to find an easy way to switch between audio devices easily on Windows 10. What I'm trying to do is switch between my system speakers and headphones. The only way I can find to do this is to right-click the speakers icon in the taskbar, select playback devices, right-click either "speakers" or "headphones" and select "Set As Default Device."

From then on, all sounds are routed to that device. But I have to do this every time I want to switch between headphones and speakers. I think on Windows 7 there was a way to route all sounds through BOTH speakers AND headphones. I could then just use the physical device's switches to control where the sound comes from. I haven't found a way to do this on Windows 10.
