File explorer is struggling with my 2 external WD My Book 3TB HDD
Problems: 1 of the drives will keep running randomly all night (and gets real hot) after PC shut down. When trying to write a batch to one of the drives explorer keeps trying to access the drive, cannot open it and becomes unresponsive (task bar icons disappear).
I'm running Windows 10 Pro, Build 10586.71. Why I have my external hard drives showing twice in File Explorer (see Attachment) ...
I've had this since the first install of Win 10 ...
After a system refresh of Windows 10 all external disk storage drives, Micro SD and USB are listed twice in file explorer. This is a common problem, reported many times in forums and community support web sites. Could a solution be to reload file explorer. Is this possible and where would I find the download?

View 3 RepliesI just put the 1511 upgrade on (for the third time, but that's another story). I've noticed that when I open File Explorer I have a WHOLE BUNCH of USB ports that have nothing plugged into them... What the upgrade did, but these weren't visible previously. How do I turn them off?
And yes, I've gone into the File explorer options in the control panel and UNCHECKED "Hide empty drives". Didn't appear to make any difference...
The volume (V:) is formatted as Fat32. Maximum Fat32 volume size is 2 TB. To regain all of the volume space, format as NTFS, or split into 2TB and 1TB Fat32 volumes.

View 9 RepliesMy new windows 10 only sees my PC - when searching for my files in Explorer, it cannot 'see' my two external drives when I plug them in. I've looked in Device Manager and they are not showing in there either. How can I tell Win 10 to access my external drives?
I thought Win 10 would automatically spot my external drivers the moment I plugged them in? Then it would go search for and install the appropriate drivers - but it isn't doing that..
I currently do File History with 1 external HDD as everyone else does. I have a spare external HDD that is just gathering dust. I wonder if I could do File History with 2 external HDDs? Will I run into trouble if I did?
The idea is that I could do File History with the 2 external HDDs on alternate days, so if the internal HDD and one external HDD happen to die on the same day (very, very unlikely, I know) I lose just one day of backup at the most.
Under the Network tab of File Explorer, I can see three entries, one of which is my router (with attached Hard Drive) and two computers, each running Windows 10. When I expand the router entry, I can see my hard drive files. I can also see my Users icons when I expand one of the computer's tabs. However, when I click on the other computer's name to search for users, all I see is a message that "This folder is empty". In fact, the folder is not empty, as there are two users on the computer. How I can get this computer to show users, etc.?
View 6 RepliesUsing Win10 Pro x64. I would like to disable windows showing .zip files in explorer as a folder...When you highlight it the contents inside the .zip are shown in the right pane view. I've scoured the net and found ways for Win7(which I did disable .zip folders on my other Win7 machine) and Vista, perhaps 8 too but I don't want to risk trying a method for older versions of windows. Any solution/reg hack or whatever to disable .zip folder?

Problem: When I go to File Explorer, in the left panel, when I click on a folder name, the contents of that folder (both sub-folders and files) show in the right panel.
In the left panel, when I click on ">" beside a folder name, it will expand in the left panel showing the sub-folders, but not "loose files".
I could have sworn that in earlier versions of Windows the files also showed.
Is there a option setting somewhere to change this behavior and to show the files also in the left panel?
When I edit a .mkv file (rename, delete or copy/move) on one of my partitions, file explorer freezes and I need to restart it with taskmanager.
I haven't encountered any other files that cause the same freeze as this one (yet..).
I already searched on google and tried editing from a webbrowser and the drive is defragmented automatically, so I don't know what to do.
I have upgraded(?) from W8.1 to W10. I have a strange issue where I can't copy or open WAV file type files on SD or CF external cards. I have tried other file types and they open and copy ok. I am thinking this is something to do with windows file permissions but I am unsure where to find this to make the needed changes.
I get this message when I try:
"File Access Denied. You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy this file" ...
Since I put vmWare 10 on my laptop , my external HDD wont initialize. it says its there but when i try to initialize it tells me my drive is too small for GPT, Its 500gb. When I installed VMWare i might have had the external connected and i believe i opted for to split partitions into 8 parts. I have some data and files on the drive that i need but once i take them off i will just format it. So how can i initialize the drive and/or get my data and store it some where safe? I am running windows 10 BTW
View 1 RepliesMy toshiba 1tb external hard drive currently says it is a raw file system and i cant seem to format it no matter what i do. I dont care for what is inside (only one word file) but i just want to be able to use it again. Is there anyway i can format the HDD and make it usable again?
View 3 RepliesIn the past few days my external hard drive makes the sound (windows notification) like when I unplug it from my desktop. Then about 5 seconds later I get another sound and notification asking me how I would like to view content for G: (my external hard drive). I only have it attached to use for backups and I've checked my back up program (easeus) and my backups haven't been happening either. I used crystaldisk to check it and it's healthy. Why it would be essentially shutting itself off and on?

Need to undertake the above for my daughter's college course. Haven't a clue where to start and I am not particularly technical (understatement). Have found a lot stuff here about merits of FAT and exFat, but just need a working how to. Video will be involved at full 1080p so I suspect that the 4gb limit will be a hindrance (assuming 3 minutes per gb).
View 4 RepliesI recently bought a new PC with win 10 on board. I now find that I want to retrieve some data from my old PC which is unserviceable.
I purchased a 22 pin sata to usb cable. When plugged in I find the Device manager will not find this new drive. The led's on the cable light up but the drive is not running.
The old HDD is a 3.5" unit which ran on win 7. the old drive is a Samsung HD502HJ/b (part No.) and is in working condition.
I am wondering if it requires a driver of its own? Or something a more diverse problem like a usb 2.0 or 3.0 conflict, maybe.
I just upgraded from Windows 7 PRO to Windows 10. I notice that my external USB 3.0 drives can't be found. Before the upgrade it was ok. The only external device that does show is a Sandisk FIT USB 2.0 stick.
View 9 RepliesWhen I plug my external into my pc it tells me it's unable to use and to format the drive. So I try to do so, and Windows tells me that there's a program using the external drive.I attempt to format anyway since I know there's no programs using the drive, and after a minute the formatting comes to a stop and I get a message saying it's unable to format. I've tried formatting it via 'This PC' and DIsk Management in Windows 10. Tried Quick Format as well and nothing is progressing.
View 9 RepliesI actually have two issues (the second being that the built-in microphone isn't working, but that's the least of my worries). I have my laptop connected to an external monitor & I can't get any non-system sounds to play.
Dell Laptop w/ only HDMI video connected to Dell VGA monitor (no speakers) via an adapter that has a 3.5mm jack for speakers. I can get system sounds via the laptop's speakers, but I can't play MP3s and YouTube videos have no sound. I had things working at one point (no, I cannot remember what I did or can find the tutorial that I used), but after moving my desk (unhooking the laptop from the monitor), cussing at non-functional microphone, and setting things back up, I'm back to no sounds. When I did get the speakers to work, they were working on the 3.5mm headphone/microphone jack on the laptop, but not through the jack on the HDMI/VGA adapter.
I've seen things about disabling the HDMI audio controller. I cannot change the default audio devices via the sound dialog box that is available by right-clicking on the sound icon on the bottom right of the screen. I'm assuming that the Dell speakers that are stuck as default are the on-board ones on the laptop.

I have an external hard drive that I have used regularly with a Windows 7 machine via esata
that does not show up when plugged into my Windows 10 notebook via USB.
I can see it under the disk management, but there is no drive letter assigned so I cannot access it.
I purchased a 1TB hard drive to place media files on it so that I could plug it into my DVD player which has a USB port. I made sure to format the hard drive to Fat32. What I can surmise is that the 1TB hard drive is too big for the DVD player to read. I plug it in and it says Device Not Supported. But I've successfully plugged in an external card reader and used a 16GB SD card to place files on and it reads them fine. So I'm thinking it's the size of the drive that is the issue.
I might have to partition the hard drive into two partitions. One partition 16gb and then the other partition with whatever is left. They did say they were not sure if there was a way to set it up so the 16gb Partition is what is recognized first when plugged into the DVD player. This way I would transfer movies I want to watch to the 16 GB partition, and transfer them over.
Now when I search hard disk partitions in Windows 10 the manager comes up and I can see the hard drive, but I can not change the size to partition it. It's grayed out. Is there a freeware program that works with Windows 10 that will split the hard drive into two partitions in sizes I specify, and make sure that the 16GB partition is the first one loaded or seen? And if I set it up that way when I plug it into my computer will the computer see both partitions?
