Drivers/Hardware :: HP Envy Laptop - USB 3 Slot Incorrectly Marked
Jan 5, 2016
I thought the USB 3 slots were BLUE by convention. On my Envy Laptop there is one BLUE slot - it's also a charging USB slot. However a Toshiba external USB3 device plugged into that slot has a WHITE Led when active indicating USB 2 speed.
I move the HDD to one of a pair of USB slots on the other side of the computer --not colour coded at all --and Hey presto the Toshiba HDD led goes BLUE indicating it's operating as a USB 3 device. Copying files also indicates it's operating at expected speed whereas connected into what I thought was the "Official" USB 3 slot only gave USB 2 data transfer speeds.
Shows you need to TEST the devices - don't always rely on external labeling etc.
I have several hard drives on my PCs; some are physical, some are partitions. In every PC I've upgraded, W10 marks these as RO. I go through the ritual of setting permissions to Full and marking RW, but occasionally a drive will revert to RO. I can't find a Take Ownership option for drives, only folders. Am I looking in the wrong place?
My laptop came installed with a 4GB RAM in slot2. The other slot has been free. Today I bought another 4GB module with same specifications and after inserting to slot1, it did not get detected.
I swapped the modules, and the new RAM is functioning perfectly. However, the RAM in slot1 is not getting detected. I have installed CPU-Z, but it too did not detect slot1.
I have also run a memory test, but it did not detect any errors. The BIOS is also showing only 4GB!
I've had this machine since Oct 5. On Oct 14 it started BSOD, particularly on wake up. Event log shows about 5 reboots. I've turned off the sleep while on AC, told it not to put the HD to sleep, and waiting to see if that fixes it. I can get a full refund or exchange on this box through Monday.
My hp envy now wants a password, after not needing one when I chose the button to not require a password in the windows settings. Now it won't accept any password, even after I went into microsoft account on another computer, got a code, updated password. Still won't accept password. I am not tech savvy, and just need to get into my laptop!
I am using a HP envy i7 laptop i usually don't switch it off regularly instead i keep it into sleep mode, last night it failed to come back to life from sleeping,it brings blue screen error message that DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE even after several restarts. How can i fix this without damaging my files coz my laptop is useless for now.
I can't use my printer after I upgraded to Windows 10. My HP Envy 5530 printer is not shown in the printers and drivers in my control panel. I tried to add my printer in the control panel. It searched the network for my printer and they found it. I click on my HP printer on the screen so it can be installed, but after I click on my printer I get an error screen. I tried to disable my firewall and I still could not get my printer installed.
I downloaded the latest update of the printer software and it won't let me install it. I uninstalled my printer software and it won't let me install the downloaded software. I tried using the HP Print and Scan Dr on my computer and it hasn't offered any way. I've only gotten troubleshooting for trying to fix a printer with a wire connection. My printer is a wireless connection they don't offer any troubleshooting for a wireless printer. I don't know what to do so I can actually use my printer again. I can't find a solution by searching online. How can I get my computer to install the printer software?
Favorites have become inaccessible during the process of Organizing Favorites. My IE Favorites were on OneDrive long before upgrading to Windows 10. I have used IE11 in Windows 10 for 2 weeks. Since using Organize Favorites in one sub-folder the IE Favorites I see in the Favorites menu are no longer what is on OneDrive.
Clicking on Favorites in the Menu Bar I see only the one folder I Organized, with one sub-folder, and the sub-folder is empty. Clicking on Organize Favorites, I see all of the Favorites I expect to see, with the one folder I had previously Organized at the top of the list, sorted out of alphabetic sequence. If I look at Favorites on OneDrive they look normal. If I look at this Registry key:
The data in that key points to the OneDrive Favorites folder as expected. The IE11 Favorites Bar is visible and active even though the Favorites menu is hosed.
One more piece of weirdness - clicking on the star icon in the upper right corner (View Favorites, feed and history) results in the correct display of Favorites. So Favorites accessed by the star icon and by Organize Favorites (under Favorites in the Menu Bar) are displayed correctly, but clicking on Favorites in the Menu Bar results in a useless display.
Edit added - I turned IE11 off in Control Panel, Programs and Features, Turn Windows features on or off. After a required restart I turned IE11 back on. Favorites displayed in the Menu Bar are incorrect. How can I reset Favorites in the Menu Bar to show the contents of the Favorites folder on OneDrive?
I have had an HP Envy dv6 running Windows 8 for two years, Windows 10 for a week or two. The past two months, my computer has been running so sluggish that it's almost inoperable. Startup time has went from 5-8 minutes to 20, sometimes even 40 minutes. When it does load up to login, it takes an additional 20 minutes for me to even load up task manager.
My disk is constantly running at 100%, despite everything running at 0mb/s consistently. The things that go above that are the system, which will spike to 2.2mb/s, norton/Symantec framework which will hover at 0.2 at most, and a bunch of service host:local services (network) processes. HP support, and a bunch of other system background services also run at 0.1mb/s.
I've done a system reboot, which barely worked. I upgraded to 10, which worked for the first two times turning on, but soon went right back to being unresponsive. I've taken a lot of processes out of startup as well. I was unable to stop indexing services when I was on windows 8, despite running as admin.
Since updating Windows 7 to Windows 10, if I try to" scan to computer" I get a message on the printer touch screen " No Connection No computer is connected" How can this be corrected?
On Friday, I updated my HP Envy 20 to Windows 10. Once the update was finished my computer started up fine, however, my antivirus software (AVG) said there was an update and I needed to restart. I did so and after the restart and HP logo screen I had a black, but luminescent screen. After a maybe ten minutes of the screen staying like this, I held the power button down to turn the computer off and then restarted it with no problems. I turned it off Friday night normally and it ran normally all day Saturday. Sunday when I turned the computer on the power light came on and I could hear the fans turn on, but the screen remained black. Just black, not even a luminescent black like when I did the antivirus restart. I tried a hard restart like before but nothing changed. I left the computer on like that for around an hour and nothing changed. Figuring it was maybe a heat issue, I opened up the case and dusted the fan and the heat sink but the problem remains. I posted this problem on the HP support board a few days ago and have heard nothing.
I Have an HP4500 Envy and the HP printer won't function. When I uninstall the software and re load I keep getting a screen asking for location of printer or an address of printer but when I input the info nothing happens. I"m at the point of getting rid of the printer because of the problems and lack of support from HP.
I am unable to print anything from Windows 10 apps on my desktop PC. Both my HP Envy 7640 and Samsung Laser are wired to the home network.
However I can print from Chrome Browser and Paint, Photoshop and Word. Just not from the Mail app or Edge Browser. After pressing print a section opens up with the printer listed in a drop down menu, but says "connecting" all the time, which it never does.
I have used the troubleshooting feature, removed the printers and installed them again, even via the add a printer option on the apps themselves, but nothing has worked.
To print an e-mail I have to open Chrome and access the email provider site directly.
I am having an issue on my Inspiron 15 where my cooling fan doesnt always start up. For example, ill start up the laptop, and start web browsing or playing a game, and the fan will never turn on. I have had it overheat and shut off a few times. But if i restart the laptop manually (start>power>restart), it will spin up automatically as it should. But then after a few more restarts, i will have a session where the fan will never turn on. Right now my only solution, besides a restart, is to use the program Speedfan, and ramp the fans to 100%. My other Inspiron 15, running a Broadwell i7 and Windows 10, has no issues at all.
I have an issue with playing games on Windows 10. Many video games bind the console key to "tilde" or "~" key but my laptop has something called an IR device (or something like that) that is preventing me from using the tilde key when gaming. My Alienware R1 works fine but my new R3 is giving me trouble with this.
I cannot find anything called an IR device in the device manager, much less find where to disable it.
I installed windows 10 on my laptop yesterday! My gpu needs reflowing and now doesn't work so I shouldn't download and install my gpu drivers... But they are actually downloading right now.
I have an Advent Monza S200 laptop. I've recently upgraded to Windows 10. Before I upgraded my touch pad was working fine, but after the upgrade my touch pad stopped working.
Once my laptop is turned on, the cursor is not visable on the screen, the touch pad is unresponsive too. If I plug in an external mouse, the cursor re-appears and I can control my computer that way, although as soon as I un-connect my external mouse the cursor stays on the screen but I can't control it with the touch pad.
I can un-install the touch pad drivers, then re-install them from the Advent webpage and the touch pad will work perfectly until I turn my laptop off, then when I switch my laptop back on, I'm back to square one again and can't do anything unless I plug in my external mouse.
I've tried asking on the Advent forums but they don't seem to have had any traffic since early 2013.
I'm running Windows 10 Home on an ASUS Q551LN 2-in-1 laptop which originally came with Windows 8.1.
When I shut down/restart/sleep the machine, it does not shut down - the Hark Disk activity light is still blinking and the normal power button press does not work. If I do nothing, it remains in this state for hours. I need to press the power button for 5 seconds to reset it. Only then I can start the laptop.
This happens around half the times. The other half it works normally. I never had this problem with the OEM 8.1 on this machine.
Based on other threads - I have the latest Windows 10 updates, and disabling fast boot did not solve the problem.
When starting up my laptop this morning, my wireless mouse didn't work. I replaced the battery, still didn't work. Tried on another computer, the mouse did work. I went to look in device manager, the mouse wasn't detected by the laptop. I tried to connect my external harddrive, it got power but also wasn't detected by my laptop. Everything worked fine yesterday.
My laptop is Dell Inspiron 3148 2 in 1 with Windows 10 Home. I cannot convert my laptop as Wifi Hotspot. It is showing me "Please install Microsoft Virtual Wifi Adapter". But I am not finding this software anywhere.
I just did a fresh install of win 7 home Premium, and installed the windows updates that came up automatically. I'd like to keep this system free of bloat and I do NOT have the driver update/laptop install disc.
I have formatted the SSD twice now because (I think) I installed drivers in an improper order; I keep having different issues with unrecognized hardware or sound not working etc. This time around I have gone only with Win 7 updates and now I would like to install only what is necessary to get this back to gaming.
So what is the order I should go on? Here is the list of drivers available from ASUS: [URL] .....
So is it chipset 1st... then restart... then GFX drivers+restart then... etc. Just getting this machine to work properly again
I have once again run into a problem with W10, and it's getting very frustrating with all these errors and malfunctions that W10 has. The problem is that when I plug a USB-device in my computer, no sound is being played to signal that the USB-device has been recognized, and that really seems to be the case. I can't even use my mouse.
I believe the problem started after the latest update for Windows 10 which took place about one day ago. Otherwise what could cause this kind of error.
I have been also wondering if it is possible to downgrade my laptop back to Windows 8. Windows 10 is clearly a very unstable OS released in a hurry and I have encountered the most bizarre problems with it, including Sony Vegas Pro 13 not launching any more.
