Drivers/Hardware :: Laptop Switched Off / Screen Black But Inside HDD Or CPU Still On
Oct 30, 2015
This topic i.e. "Laptop Switched Off but Inside HDD or CPU still On" is on the internet in almost all forums and i have browsed and surfed 50 of the key ones but none have offered a proper solution or maybe it is not working for my laptop.
I have a Dell Inspiron 3542 Laptop with a Core i5 CPU, Nvidia Ge Froce graphic card and 4 GB Ram. It came with preinstalled windows 8.1 64 bit OS which was upgraded to windows 10 64 bit OS.
The issue has started after the upgrade to windows 10.
Even after switching off the laptop, the screen goes black but inside the laptop either the HDD or CPU or something remains on. I formatted and did a clean install and installed all DELL drivers in the perfect order.... No change! The problem still persists. i have the latest Bios as Dell drivers check.
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge with an Intel I5 processor, 64 bit with no hardware upgrades (stock). I had accidentally stepped on the screen (fell off my lap and then crunch) which was mangled beyond repair, so I have been using it similar to a tower, with a VGA and/or HDMI connected monitor (my HDMI cable went bad, I picked up a new cable but hadn't hooked it up to the second monitor. I started my free upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium to 10 last night. I woke up to the black screen/mouse pointer issue which is what brought me to this thread. I tried the recommended fix:
1. Hit ctrl, type in password and enter 2. Win Key + P + Down Arrow. (Win Key + P only seems to do the same thing)
This brought up options to
1. Disconnect projector (Tried this and lost connection to the VGA even after reboot) 2. Duplicate (Screen is still black with mouse cursor, but I saw a little bit of red and blue pixels at the bottom where the task bar should be until I disconnected and re-connected the VGA, then it was back to black screen and cursor) 3. Extend (still black screen and cursor) 4. Connect Projector (still black screen and cursor)
I'm not sure what to do. I must have some OS installed, because I am able to also perform these operations from my USB Keyboard/Mouse. I'm just not sure how to get Windows back on my VGA connection (I haven't tried HDMI because I did not have it connected when I ran the update.) I thought Duplicate displays would do the trick, but apparently not. For as beat up as the laptop is on the outside, the hardware performs fine. I also have a 2nd laptop (work laptop, also a Lenovo W541) that I can use if any solution involves downloading something bootable.
My magnifier and narrator auto-start on the lock screen despite them both being switched off in the Ease of Use panel. The narrator turns off when the desktop loads and the magnifier stays on in the shape of the magnifying glass in the upper left area of the screen. It's not debilitating just annoying. How to fix it or maybe a regedit that can get rid of them completely?
I have a ASUS N53S and after having upgraded to windows 10, I came across a few issues. The update when well and windows 10 is working on my laptop, however, I have an issue where I am presented with a black screen when i start my computer. I do see a ASUS screen and a windows boot screen before it goes black, however after the windows boot screen passes (the one with the blueish window icon) the screen goes to black, but it is still on (meaning the monitor is still turned on just not displaying anything). This issue occur after i restart ( few days before doesn't on the laptop). I try to on and off the laptop for few times but still the same problem and the last time i restart again and left it for a night and it doesn't change which still in black screen. So, now what should i do to let it display with desktop since now still in black screen with movable mouse.
I downloaded windows 10 and all had been running smoothly, however, when I turned my laptop on this morning my background was black and about 20 new icons had appeared on the desktop all of which were just white and blank, i normally only have rhe recycle bin. i tried to run things but nothing worked, i also couldn't get the start menu up, I've tried restarting but it isn't doing anything.
Whenever I close my laptop lid to put Windows 10 to sleep, it won't turn off properly - the computer continues to run, as indicated by the power button and the three lights on the side of the laptop, but I'm stuck on a black screen and the only way to get out of it is holding the power button and turning it off completely. Anyway to fix this?
I have a dell insperation and after having upgraded to windows 10, I came across a few issues. The update when well and windows 10 is working on my laptop, however, I have an issue where I am presented with a black screen when i start my computer. I do see a dell screen and a windows boot screen before it goes black so i know the issue is not a hardware issue, however after the windows boot screen passes (the one with the blueish window icon) the screen goes to black, but it is still on (meaning the monitor is still turned on just not displaying anything). The reason i know that windows installed fine is that external monitors do work, just not my laptop monitor. I have already reinstalled windows 10 and have made sure all my drivers are up to date. Windows 10 is just not recognizing my laptops screen as a usable monitor.
I recently upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 10 64 bit and shortly after it was completed, everything was working fine until the screen suddenly went black. The computer was still running but I could not see anything on the screen to restart the computer so I closed the laptop so that it would shut off to sleep. Coincidentally a power outage happend lasting for about an hr after. When I am finally able to boot up the computer, it show the ASUS splash screen and the windows logo with the loading spin cycle but then shows a black screen after. My guess is that the OS may have been corrupted or something so that I plan on backing up my hard drive before going to a tech shop. I'm not sure what the issue is but it seems like I may have to reinstall the operating system. i have an ASUS N61J. I can't boot into bios or safe mode and can't get passed the black screen to log into my user account.
I have the new Acer Aspire laptop and a TV which I use as a monitor. They have worked together very happily some time now. But yesterday I had to do a forced shutdown when the start button would not work and the TV screen shrank in size and there were error messages. When I rebooted, the TV monitor stayed black and a computer screen came alive for about 10 seconds as it was rebooting, then went black. I disconnected the TV from the computer and started her up and the computer screen behaved itself.
Even if I set all of the display parameters to indicate only one screen (the computer screen), if the TV monitor is connected to the computer, I end up with two black screens.I have tried many display duplicate and extension. No new software installed. There is one clue. I disconnect the TV monitor from the computer, boot up, choose duplicates to display. Then I connect the TV monitor to the computer. What happens, for about one second, is that both screens light up.
Today I installed Windows 10 TP on my old HP Touchsmart tm2 laptop. First it all went well, I was able to log in and search for updates (iso is the first build). But after a few minutes the screen went of for about 3 seconds (black) and came on again only to turn dark again, come back and turn dark again. There it stopped. It's not totally dark, back lighting is still on I think.
It actually felt like the laptop tried to switch to an external monitor 3 times until it finally managed to find one. But there is no external monitor connected! I tried to restart the pc several times but luck. I only get to the windows logo, after that I get a dark screen instead of the login screen. I also tried to actually connect an external monitor via VGA but it shows the same dark on the monitor.
I reinstalled Windows 10 TP and it all went the same way again. When I tried to start in safe mode, I was able to login but couldn't open any apps/programs, not even the start menu. Ctrl+Shift+Esc finally worked and I could then run explorer.exe and get to the control panel. How I can get this laptop to work properly.
Upgraded my laptop to Windows 10 today, but it didn't ask me about whether or not I wanted to keep anything or not.. it just automatically kept my files.. but I wanted it to wipe everything clean with this install. So I'm on Windows 10 now and I want to do a factory reset, and I've gone to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC.. But clicking the "Get Started" button does absolutely nothing. I've tried doing the Advanced Startup > Troubleshoot > Reset this PC too.. but it doesn't ask me how much I want to keep, or do anything actually, that just goes to a black screen and resets my laptop.
Today when I tried to reset my laptop my battery died (I got up to 29% on the reset), because somehow my charger got unplugged. Now when I turn it on I get to the Logo (asus) then get a black screen. (I have tried taking the battery out and pressing the power button for a couple seconds and I got nothing) I don't know what to do!
How can I enter the "choose an option" screen, the blue one. I can reset there. I chose continue to windows 10 and now I keep getting black screen after logo. is there like hotkeys to press while turning on?
I am trying to figure out what is going on with my mom's laptop. Two days ago she told me she was using her laptop and everything was fine, but then she left to do some things in the kitchen and came back a bit later to the screen off. Upon waking it up by moving the mouse, all she got was a black screen with a white cursor. I have looked at it and upon manually restarting, it shows the Windows 10 logo, and then it goes to the black screen with the cursor. There is no login screen either but I do also hear the welcome music. One thing I noticed though is the cursor does have the blue loading circle next to it like it is actually still doing something, and it flashes and spins now and then, as well as the computer sounding like its working, but I have left this on for almost 40 minutes now and it is still just a black screen. It sometimes goes to the off screen and have to move the mouse to wake it up again. Some people online suggest task manager and opening up other windows but nothing works, I can just move a cursor.
Yesterday I got a notification that my windows 10 upgrade was ready on my MSI GT60-0NE laptop and decided to give it a try because I really disliked windows 8.1. Windows update went through downloading the files and preparing the computer for installation. It then did the usual, configuring updates on the blue screen, got to 100% and just shut down completely. I left it there for about 5 minutes and decided to try to power it back on. When turning the computer back on, it stayed on for about a minute and then cut itself back off.
After waiting a minute it turned back on, then back off again. It kept repeating this for about 5 minutes. During this phase I saw absolutely nothing on the screen, no MSI loading splash screen, no cursor, absolutely nothing at all. I couldn't enter the BIOS, couldn't run recovery or even get into safe mode. Absolutely nothing worked. The battery light was also flashing blue which I had never seen before. During this time the hard drive light was flashing and flickering the usual red light.
I did a hard reset on the computer and then turned it back on. When i powered it back on the screen was still completely blank, no MSI splash screen, no cursors, couldn't enter the BIOS or anything. During this time the hard drive light was a steady red. The blue battery light was no longer there and it was back to its usual constant red light. After about 10 minutes the computer turned itself off. Being frustrated I left it overnight and tried again this morning.
When I power the computer on now, there is no hard drive light. It doesn't even give a single flash of red. The computer will stay on but just stays there at the black screen. I've tried to look for solutions but I can't get anything to work. The only thing I can hear running is the fan.
I've tried to remove the hard drive and boot to see if I could get into bios, still a black screen. I've tried removing the video card and booting to see if I could get anything through integrated graphics, still a black screen. I've tried to plug the computer into another monitor, still a black screen but it does recognize the signal.
Specs for the GT60-0NE 403-US: Intel Core i7 3630QM (2.40 GHz) Nvidia GTX 680M (4GB) Windows 8.1 64-bit (Windows 10 now?)
I have a Samsung laptop. I had Windows 10 for about 2 weeks and everything was fine until last week. When I press the power button, the Windows 10 icon appears with the loading icon. After that, I'm getting a black screen for about 3 minutes then my login screen appears and everything is fine after that.I thought it may be something corrupted with my OS so I decided to reinstall Windows 10 from scratch and not to keep my files and programs. I found out yesterday that this wasn't the solution to my problem because I reinstalled it and it keeps making it again.
I installed Windows 10 yesterday but had to return back to Win 7 because the driver problems crashed the whole system. Basically what happened was that I was stuck at black screen after every boot and got back only when going to sleep-mode through power button and back.
I tried to uninstall all graphic drivers but it doesn't really work when Windows is reinstalling them immediately. I though that I would only use my Nvidia and downloaded the latest drivers and after that disconnect from Internet but the driver installation just crashed the whole system. When I rebooted it crashed again so only thing I could do was to boot in safe mode and go back to Win 7.
I did a clean install of Windows 10 and, because of problems with installation,I disconnected all unnecessary DVD drives and expansion cards etc. I decided to reconnect my DVD drives today to two spare ports on the mobo but, when I started the computer I got a black screen with two strange symbols before Windows attempted to start. The computer just hangs on the black screen. I tried disconnecting the drives in turn, different SATA cables and even starting in safe mode but the result is the same - black screen with strange symbols immediately after POST.
My Screen is displaying off center to the right just a little. I only found one other mention of this on another forum with no solution. There is a black strip on the left hand side of my screen. The other post was on a MS forum they theorized it had to do with the Intel HD device driver. I did not have this problem with Windows7. Hope the graphic card I have coming will fix this.
I upgraded from windows ultimate to windows 10. my computer boots through everything and finally brings up my old windows 7 desktop screen and then everything goes black, but mouse shows up on black screen. Is this a driver problem with windows 10? However, before the black screen appears the new start button and screen appears as the windows 10
Recently I had my Windows Vista upgraded to Windows 10 (also upgraded various hardware).
Today I was fiddling around and customizing it, when I noticed that all of my files that were previously saved on my C: Drive were now on my D: drive, like my Program Files and, well, basically everything I ever downloaded.
Should I be worried? I've heard that things like Program files are MEANT to be on the C: Drive, whereas the D: drive is meant for windows files...
In my switch from Windows 7 to 10 I lost MS Word and I really need it. Tried to adjust to Open Writer, but it doesn't work for my specific application.
I do not want to pay for a new MS Word at this time.
I have a laptop running Windows 10 and a Nokia phone running Windows 8. When the phone's Internet Sharing is switched, on the laptop will see it and connect - but as soon as Outlook / Edge / Explorer tries to use the connection it fails and the wireless connection is lost and cannot be restarted without closing and re-starting Sharing on the phone.
Now the odd part - this same phone links perfectly to my iPad, and my laptop links perfectly to my wife's iPhone (and obviously the iPhone and iPad work together). The only combination that doesn't work is the two Windows devices! Rebooting phone and/or laptop makes no difference, and the Win10 troubleshooter can't identify the problem.
I started reading this article and when I get down a little ways into the article, I notice the images inside the article are not showing up.For example, there is no image for Fig A, Fig B, Fig C, etc, etc.Instead, there are buttons appearing marked Fig A, Fig B, Fig C, etc, etc, ....... but they are unclickable.
Manipulating Windows 10's Start Menu - TechRepublic clicked on a couple of articles on that webpage, and it was the same thing..... no images within the articles appearing, instead just unclickable buttons.
