Oct 19, 2015Is it advisable to leave some of the hard disk space, say 1 GB or 2GB or ...... unallocated. Is there any benefit or harm.

Nov 28, 2015I installed Windows 10 on a new PC, with OS on Samsung 950 PRO. For data disk, at this stage, I use a Samsung 840 PRO which I transferred from my old 8.1 PC.
The data disk now shows in diskmanagment 351MB unallocated space, and 119 GB NTFS Healthy (Primary Partition).
How can I reclaim the 351MB unallocated to get maximum capacity of the data disk?
Maybe this a standard case of repartitioning, but I am not familiar with that and do not know how to do it.

Jan 21, 2016Until recently, I ran a dual boot system with Ubuntu - but for business reasons, I uninstalled it (along with it's bootloader). Anyway, I cleared up the hard drive space in the Disk Management app on windows 10, I have about 350GB free space from Ubuntu and I cannot extend the C: partition, you can see what I mean here
I can't seem to extend my partition and whatever program I use I have to buy the full version to extend my partition,

Dec 17, 2015I had 2 useless partitions, one at the very beginning of my HD and the second at the very end. My setup is GPT Basic btw.
I would like to know, using MiniTool Partition Wizard version 9.1, if it is possible to merge these former partitions (now 'unallocated' space) into the Windows partition (C??
I right clicked on both of the unallocated space 'partitions' but any operations (namely, move) was greyed out.
I would like to clean up the disk layout (even if we are talking about only 1 GB. of space)

Jan 27, 2016I just assembled a new PC. It has a single 4TB hard drive. During Windows 10 installation, I created a 200gb partition to install to as the C: drive. It auto partitioned my drive into a 500MB system reserved partition, my C: drive, and two unallocated spaces of 1852.69GB and 1678.02GB respectively. The 1852GB space I can create a partition on, but the 1678GB space I cannot do anything with: Cannot create a partition, and cannot combine it with the rest of the unallocated space.
I would like to combine the two unallocated spaces to create a single partition from the remaining unallocated spaces, but cannot figure out how. I contacted Microsoft tech support via chat, allowed them to remote in to my machine, but they could not determine the issue either.
Performance :: Hard Disk (C) Takes Up Too Much Space
Nov 21, 2015So I have a 200 GB Hard Drive on my computer. A couple of days ago I got a notification mentioning there was not ten GB of space left. I was surprised, but I assumed I just had more on it than I thought. However, since then I have re-installed Windows for my own reasons and was surprised to find despite removing all documents and applications in the re-installation, I only had 90 GB free. This leaves 110 taken up by an unknown cause. I could not find many large files in file explorer when I searched for large files (file:gigantic).

Sep 4, 2015I've recently upgraded to windows 10 home version from windows 8.1 . My hard disk space before the upgrade was around 50GB. After the upgrade it was reduced to around 32 GB. I figured it was just because windows was storing some of the older files temporarily to allow for a rollback.
Today, i started my PC after it got shut down due to low power, the hard disk is suddenly showing 130 GB free space. All programs seem to be in place working fine. I just couldn't figure out where the additional space came from.
Unallocated Disc Space
Dec 16, 2015For various reasons I decided to completely format my hard drive and partitions when installing windows 10, to give it a clean start.Now when I'm in windows 10 I have 2 drives, at 465gb each and a third one with 40mbs allocated as Dell Utilities and 930gb of unallocated space. No matter what I try I cannot link that unallocated space to anything. Even trying to create a simple volume out of it falls down by saying "the size of the extent is less than the minimum". I've tried extending my existing drives and using it but it throws up the same error or something about not enough space.

Aug 31, 2015After I free upgraded from 8.1 to 10 a new partition showed up. I just deleted it and it became unallocated space.
How can I merge this space with my primary partition. Both are on a 256 SSD.
When I right click C: in disk management, the extend volume choice is grayed.

Dec 13, 2015I'm going under Computer Management>Disk Management and have deleted a partition which gave me the unallocated 48gb, and I'm trying to add that unallocated space to the main drive (C), and it's not letting me, When I right the C drive there is only a shrink volume option, the extended volume is shaded gray.

Oct 15, 2015I have a 120 gig solid state hard drive, that I have my OS installed on (Windows 10)
I was going to install windows 7 on a second partition on that hard drive, so I shrank the current partition and it gave me unallocated space.
I had a few people tell me it wasn't possible to install windows 7 on the same hard drive as windows 10... for some reason or another.
So I decided to expand the partition back to its original size (the whole hard drive).
Before I shrunk the partition.. I had 60 gigs left, I shrunk it by 20 to install windows 7 on.
Well after some people told me it wouldn't work. I decide to re-expand the partition to take back up the whole drive.
Problem is, when I did that.. I loss that 20 gigs, it says that 20 gigs is 'used' space now. I tried scanning the hard drive for errors and defragging (won't let me defrag that drive.. I assume cause its either a solid state drive or the windows drive)
I don't know how to get that lost 20 gigs back.
Drivers/Hardware :: Can't Access Old Hard Drive - Bad Disk
Feb 10, 2016My old Windows XP Desktop stopped running 2 weeks ago, with a No OS Found error. Since then I've taken the hard drive out and connected it to my new Windows 10 desktop with a USB 2.0 to SATA Adapter. It does not show up in "My Computer", but is detected in Computer Management.
The drive's an old Western Digital WD2000 one, and started clicking (for a few seconds) as soon as I attached it to the PC w/the USB Adapter. The clicking stopped after that.
It shows up as "Disk 1, Unknown, with the amount of data on it (186.31 GB [out of 200]), and is Unallocated. I've already tried numerous utility and Data Recovery programs, such as Recuva, MiniTool Partition Wizard, EaseUS Data/Partition Recovery. No luck with these.
They were either not detected, or didn't find anything. MiniTool Partition Wizard said it's a "Bad Disk" I
Partition Find and Mount is still conducting a scan which has been going for the past 7 hours (35%).
BTW - I really can't leave the hard drive on for the night to conduct a long scan. It's been overheating, and I already have a large fan next to it to cool it down. It's not safe to leave this on for an extended period of time.
Only to find out I bought a USB 3.0 Adapter instead of a 2.0 my old XP supported when It still ran.
Low Disk Space Message?
Aug 15, 2015Although not a specifically Win10 message the regularity with which the message appears since updating to Win10 is beginning to annoy me. My set up has a small allocation to a recovery drive for the PC, a relic from a prior setup. I could probably delete the partition and merge it with another but for now it doesn't use up much space and happy to leave it except... Every so often I get a system message that says I have low disc space on this drive (in fact no space at all) and I want to stop the message from appearing, I know it is low on disc space and don't need to be told every half hour. how to stop it?
Also I do need to get into the depths of the OpSystem to start to understand privileges etc
Hard Drive Space Missing
Dec 9, 2015I have a 240gb SSD with Windows 10 installed. After selecting all the programs to determine the amount of space it should take I only saw 82gb yet I only have 44gb of free space left. At first it was only missing about 20gb of space which I thought would be a system restore point however now I'm actually running out of storage. What is taking up my hard drive space or how to determine it?

Dec 12, 2015only 9 gigabytes of disk space appear to have been freed after deleting roughly 18 gigabytes worth of old Windows files via Windows Disk Cleanup. Since the Windows.old folder still exists even after the cleanup, I decided to check the folder properties to see if the folder still took up some space, but it was completely empty, save for a few empty subfolders that I didn't have permission to delete myself. I tried Disk Cleanup a second time, but it did not give me the option to delete old Windows files.

Sep 13, 2015Bought a 8.1 desktop last month. The store upgraded to Win10 for me. It came with a 1TB drive that now says it has 0 disk space. Something is going on. Ever since I got the first "running out the disk space" warning today, the machine has really slowed down. I opened File Explorer and sure enough, it said I had 0 space on my C drive. I cleaned up some temp files and rebooted. Now File Explorer says I have 211MB of the 1TB free instead of 0. Is this a partition issue, a Win10 upgrade bug or ?

Sep 10, 2015I bought an HP stream to take to class with me because it just is too ridiculous to keep carrying around my 18.4" gaming laptop. Grew up a little and decided I didn't want to be "that guy". Anyways, I upgraded the stream to Windows 10 right out of the box. After the upgrade, literally 6 gb of free disk space. Now, I realize that 32 gb is a small SSD, but there's no way Windows 10 is 26gb. And yes, I've deleted Windows.old and literally everything that's not essential to running the PC. I need some sort of utility that uninstalls everything, literally only asking me what files I want to keep, and nuking away everything else. A clean install is possible but I would rather not, since I already activated Office and set everything up how I like it.

Nov 26, 2015I have a HP Stream 11 laptop I bought from Walmart, it came with Windows 8.1 and I went through the charade of upgrading from 8.1 to 10 so it would validate they key and then I immediately did a clean install. Sadly with this laptop, it only has a 32 GB eMMC drive (non-upgrageable), when formatted it is brought down to 28 GB, after the clean install I was at 15 GB, I have installed very very few and rather lightweight applications that at most take up 1 GB. So left with 14 GB, what I have noticed since then... it seems as the updates rolls out, I'm starting to run out of space, I just did the "November 1511" update and I am now down to 5.75 GB free. Is there anything I can do to slim down Windows 10? or Should I just downgrade to a different OS?

Aug 12, 2015I recently bought a new laptop which had Windows 8.1. After a week of having it I noticed my Disk Space near 100%. I heard this was a common problem so installed CCleaner and did disk space cleaner however none of it worked.
I then upgraded to Windows 10 as a friend said this solved the problem for him, however, since doing so either the disk space, Memory or CPU are high either one at a time or all together, regardless of what I am doing on the laptop.
The first week of having the laptop I don't believe this was a problem so I think it's something to do with an update as all games ran smoothly.
When I run a game or bring up firefox near the top is always 'system (ntoskrnl)' or a few 'service host (svchost)'. I dont believe its the games I play or firefox as like I said it was fine for the first week. It seems windows are running stuff behind the scenes.
I have done a few things that I have found on the internet but none have worked like; disable prefact and superfetch or whatever they are called. Still seeing increase in memory or disk usage whenever i load something and system or serice host are there at the top of performance or the game seems to use alot - however again the game never did this in the first week.
Hard Drive C Partitioning - Shrink Space Allowed Is Only Around 3 GB
Nov 26, 2015I just bought my surface book. I am trying to partition my C Hard drive. I thought that I have to shrink it first, then create a partition. However, the shrink space allowed is only around 3 GB. My disk size is 512 GB.
I defragmented (or now called optimized) the C drive and retried it, but no use. I would like to create a new drive call it D, and leave C for windows only.
AVG Web Tuneup Maxing Out Hard Drive Space - Can't Delete
Dec 8, 2015Something is causing my C-drive to completely run out of space. I did some investigation and found a folder under AppDataLocalPackages. The folder was called windows_ie_ac_001 and it is about 36Gbs. I deleted it. The strange thing is that after I restart my computer, you can literally watch my hard drive fill up back to the 36Gbs. The folder I deleted is back too and if you go to its properties, it's increasing in size so I know it's the culprit.
Doing some more investigation I found out this problem folder is for a stupid programmed called AVG Web Tuneup. I tried to delete the program in Uninstall/Install and it won't work.
