View 2 RepliesI have just done a Clean Install of Windows 10 on my Sony Vaio VGN-NW21ZF laptop following a partition corruption while trying to repartition the HDD. previously it had been upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 and there were no device driver issues.
All appears to be working OK, but in device manager I have two unknown devices that do not have drivers installed. On is described as Base System Device, and the other as Unknown Device. Looking at Sysyinfo I see the following details:
How do I work out what these devices are so I can try to find the correct drivers?
Looking in Computer Management I see this information
This is probably the most painful issue I have with Windows 10 right now (and likely previous versions as well, but I didn't have a multi-monitor setup back then).
The monitors I have are as follows: 3840x2160 (4K UHD) monitor with preferred DPI: 144 (150%)1920x1080 (Full HD) monitor with preferred DPI: 96 (100%)
Whenever one of these monitors are set as primary, all desktop applications displayed on the secondary monitor (doesn't matter which) has blurry text. Exceptions are the Windows Store Apps like Windows Store and Microsoft Edge, along with the Taskbar/Start Menu, the Taskbar/Start Menu settings screen, the Taskbar context menu, and the desktop context menu which passes the DPI test with flying colours, with crispy text on both monitors (occasionally a DPI switch bug gets in, but I can mostly ignore that). The problem is, as you can probably guess, is that >99% of the applications I use aren't Windows Store Apps.
Here are some screenshots. The "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" text is what the text should look like while the Visual Studio 2015 text is an example of the text most desktop apps get. The blurry image is what happens when the UHD monitor is not the primary monitor. Attachment 48493Attachment 48494 Note: Both of these screenshots came from the 150% DPI monitor so it's best viewed at that (144) DPI level. The 96 DPI monitor is similarly affected.
Things I've already tried: Reinstall the graphics driver. Did this multiple times in fact for unrelated reasons.Reinstall Windows 10 (through Reset This PC recovery option). I did this for also unrelated reasons but it definitely doesn't fix this issue.Use the XP Explorer "fix". Merely worsens the problem. Adjusting Clear Type options. Alleviates the issue a bit but see next point.Disabling Clear Type on the affected monitor. The text obviously sharpens, but it's painful to read and a close inspection of the text reveals the issue isn't solved at all, only mitigated slightly.Replacing the video card. I swapped this in with my older GTX 560 Ti but it's obvious the problem remains. Both it and my current card are NVIDIAs though, so it's vaguely possible the drivers or the cards themselves are the cause. I don't have an ATI/AMD card (that still works, at least) to test the setup and every Intel iGPU I have either has only one monitor output or is incapable of handling UHD resolutions.
Things I won't try: Setting both monitors' DPI to 96. Text would become microscopic considering the UHD monitor's actual size.Use the text resizing feature instead. I'm going take a wild guess that this is not monitor-specific and would cause everything on the HD monitor to be far too large to the point that I'd rather unplug it.
Looking for multi-resolution, multi-DPI, multi-monitor setup with or without this issue? The text is painful to read on whichever is the secondary monitor right now, and is extremely apparent whenever the background is dark.
How to track services via eventlog name in cmd.so the main problem is I can't seem to find these services on services.msc ... I want to know how to track these services via cmd, how I don't want you guys to tell me what type of service is this i want too know how I can track this own my own?
View 9 RepliesI upgraded to Windows 10 and everything is working flawlessly except for Game DVR. It records the video very well with nice quality and all but does not record the audio. Checking the .mp4 file with media info I noticed that the video does not have and audio track, only video.
View 1 RepliesI originally upgraded 7 to 10 and ran that for about 3 weeks, some odd issues came up and decided to wipe out everything and reinstall 10 from the ISO. Well off topic for this question the wipe drive option on installing 10 did not delete anything from my hard drive for some reason, unless windows 10 makes folders with dates back to 2011 on install which is when I first got this computer.
But to my actual question during both the time I spent just upgraded and now with the system with a fresh install I seem to be randomly getting a beep at various times that I can not even use process monitor to track down, it shows no sound activity for mp3 or wav when I get this chime/beep.
I have gone through all sound settings and its none of the ones used, I also have gone through the media folder and played each file there and none match this sound. IF this was the old dos days I would call this a system beep from the PC speaker but its playing though the speakers external to the computer itself.Google has turned up similar issues but none that match software that I run...in the time it took me to type the first part of this line it went off twice, no notifications appear in the action center to go with it.
I upgraded my Windows 7 to Windows 10. Now I would like to have a multi-boot. If I install Windows 7 on my blank 150 GB partition, will Windows 10's boot sequence recognize it so that I have a working multi-boot?
View 1 RepliesI updated my PC to windows 10 on the 29th , and for the 1st few days i had no issues what so ever. However now, whenever im say Playing a game and watching youtube or netflix my net will drop and can only be fixed by a restart. It "seems" ok if I am just doing 1 thing at once, say on this very forum for example, but if i opened a few windows now and started streaming something it would for sure drop. My internet is 100mb fiber optic, and all other devices connected to my hub are fine (PC is wired connection, this is the only thing having a issue, i have a wired xbox one which is fine, and wireless works perfect.)
I've tried ipconfig/flushdns - did nothing
I've tried swapping my settings to google ( 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) - did nothing.
I've even tried turning off firewall as i saw someone say that could cause this issue - did nothing.
I know i could just roll back to windows 7 and that would probably fix everything, but i really like windows 10 and would rather fix it if possible.
I have been trying to create a USB that has Windows 7 to Windows 10 for convenience if I ever need to install any of them again. From what I have googled myself there is ways of doing it up from XP to Windows 8.1. How to go about this??
View 1 RepliesI had Win7 and did the free upgrade to Win10.
Before the upgrade I was smart enough to do a complete system image of Win7.
1. If I disconnect the Drive that Win10 is installed on and reinstall Win7 on a different drive, can I use the system image to recover Win7 back to the state it was before the upgrade?
2. Reconnect the Win10 drive and and boot up the system, will system ask which OS I want to boot up with at that point or will there be a conflict?
It's not that I don't like Win10 given I just upgraded on Thursday, September 17th and I need time to fully go thur all the operations and functions. I want to get a reasonable working knowledge and understanding of the Win7 OS, till I do I want the ability to keep and use Win7.
It took me quite some time to migrate from XP Pro to Win7 because I created a dual boot system for that purpose and I do not want to be FORCED cold turkey to switch to a new OS till I am ready to do so.
Lenovo USB port replicator to work with a DVI monitor attached? I can't get win 10 to recognize that another monitor is attached.
View 1 RepliesI am dated on things HTPC/Home-Entertainment and need a puzzle piece: What is the right way to pull content off the web [say PBS documentaries from their site] and make available to all the HDTV's connected by ethernet and COAX to household fabric? Presumably the same network & server setup would stream stored movies, home vid, etc to any of the HDTV's.
View 7 Repliesplayer will not play multi chooses , only one selection. I highlight 3 songs , it only plays the last one.
View 2 Replieshave a problem with usb drivers according to my control panel which says it is fixing the issue and then tells me to reboot but it is not fixed. Keyboard lights up on start but when the first blue window appears it goes off. I can get into the bios ok and the keyboard works there. only one port is working (USB3). as my mouse and keyboard are usb and there is no PS2 port i am kinda cactus at the moment. Been searching for usb drivers for win 10 but not having any luck. Everything was working fine since November until yesterday.
View 2 RepliesAfter upgrade from 7 to 10 my 2 brother printers were visible and apparently ready. The HL2270DW would not print - just spooled forever but the MFCJ825DW worked. I tried using the Brother uninstall tool to remove the laser driver then installed the W8.1 package for it. Would not install. So I wondered if the other printer was to blame and removed it as well and re-installed. I have done this many times now getting progressively more thorough including removing all mentions of Brother drivers using Devices and Printers interface, uninstalling in Device Manager installing in a different order and as administrator, removing folders left over etc. The result is always the same. I can get one of them installed but attempting to print gives the error Driver not installed - do you want to install? Click through, install via windows process but it fails anyway.
View 2 RepliesI just got this laptop (Dell Vostro 3558 i3), a few days ago i upgraded to windows 10 using the media creation tool. After the upgrade, the touch pad works but I cannot scroll. I have tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them. When I upgraded there was nothing listed that went along the lines of synaptics in the control panel (uninstall).
I have tried installing the drivers of windows 10 and windows 7 from the dell website, what happens is quite weird, the installer says it installs without any errors but nothing happens, there is no synaptics program listed in the control panel.
Excuse me if I left any important details out but it is the first time that i have come across this issue and don't know what info I should give. I should also note that before I upgraded the touch pad worked along with the program of the drivers, now all I get is the usual mouse options and in device manager it recognizes it as a P/S2 mouse.
I installed windows 10 for my Asus laptop(which was running windows 8.1 pro and the mic worked perfectly) , and the microphone just doesn't work. I tried to install the latest win 10 drivers for Via, and that didn't work. Are there any fixes for this problem, or am I just out of luck?
View 1 RepliesSo, I downloaded Windows 10 a week ago, and checked for updates, but no driver updates came up. But I know that my Video Card was out of date, as I kept getting an error and also, my Bluetooth is not working. Hence my point, is there any third party app that allows you to download and update drivers?
View 4 RepliesI downloaded the Win10 Home single language ISO for a clean install on a new build PC and skipped the activation step during install. Now I need to activate. If I purchase a copy of Windows 10 Home in store or digitally, will I be able to use the product key in my current install without need to re-install?
View 7 RepliesI don't know if it's my installation, but I can't really switch to select a differet login user once I turn on my PC, and it brings to the last logged on user and his Picture password screen.
Both users have a Picture password and I don't have any chance to pick the other one, unless:
- I select a different type of access
- ask for password
- then the damn multi-user LH box appears
- and I can pick another one.
Then do the opposite until I get back to his Picture password screen. Odd and unbelieavable, considering how well streamlined in Win8.1...
The old way I found for Windows 8.x (HERE) is not working anymore, as I went in the Registry of mine upgraded Win10 and found it was already correctly modified (=1), but the login screen is a mess, nonetheless.
I'm ok with Task scheduling batches, reg modification, whatever. But it's Win10 Home, so no gpedit involved..
(it's a Dell Venue 11 Pro)
When I tried to play a disc in the dvd player nothing happened, so I checked in Device Manager and the dvd had a yellow triangle on it, so I uninstalled it then restarted the computer. There was no change so I checked the error report and found this:
"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"
I opened regedit and went to {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}, there was a lower listed but not an upper. I restarted the computer but the DVD still is not working.
I have a Centrios Desktop Microphone with a 6.4mm Jack. My Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E420 obviously doesn't have a 6.4 mm Audio Jack but it does have 1 Jack for both Audio and Microphones. I found an adapter from 6.4mm Female to 3.5mm Male. When i plug the Microphone into the adapter and the adapter into the Laptop it weirdly plays music out of the microphone and thinks it is a Speaker according to the control panel. I also have a splitter to make the 1 dual jack into two separate microphone and audio. I am not sure how to get the Desktop Microphone to work as a microphone. The Microphone will work on any other computer with a single microphone jack.
View 5 RepliesI have a Anitech P201RU keyboard and when I boot my PC the keyboard works fine until the login screen. I have tried turning on legacy in bios and turning it off and tried uninstalling the drivers. What I noticed is that when I go into device manager it shows a exclamation mark next to the usb composite device.
View 3 RepliesSince my PC was updated to Windows 10 I have been having trouble with USB devices not working. It appears the drivers do not load or do not work. Example is my Saitek rudder pedals. They appear to be fully installed and appear in the device list but they do not work. I go into the device manager and update the driver to the exact same driver and it works. I plug in my iPhone and it is recognized as an iPhone but appears in the Other Devices with a yellow exclamation. A check and it says there are no drivers. Manually find the drivers and update them and it is good until I pull it out. Next time I plug it in same thing. Phantom 3 pro wont show the disk drive and have to load in a generic disk drive driver and all good. This list goes on.
View 1 RepliesSo a few days ago I finished my new build, I went for for Win 10 with DirectX12 in mind. However, my mic does not work, neither through the front or back panel. The PC detects that an audio jack has been connected, detect the mic through both panels, but the mic itself does not pick out any voice. I tried reinstalling Realtek drivers, motherboard drivers, raising the level on Recording Devices and none worked. I'm using ASRock x99 Extreme3 Motherboard. Is there anything else that I can try? The mic works on my laptop and any other device, it's a Steel Series Syberia v2 Headset. Just updated Realtek Audio to 7720 v and still nothing.
View 9 Repliesso, the same as usual when it comes to my luck: I'm trying to tether my internet connection from my note 5 to my PC via USB, and it doesn't work. here are a few details that I can give you of what occurs when I try to do this:
I plug in my phone via usb, and it recognizes it off the bat.
I go to my settings in android and enable usb tethering.
windows makes the sound that happens when you disconnect a device, then proceeds to slow down. WAY down.
I hover over the network icon in the system tray, and it just shows the line for loading or identifying.
clicking on the icon or trying to open the network and sharing center while I'm in usb tether mode results in nothing.
I did however manage to disable tethering, them open the network and sharing center, then enable my usb tethering. from there, it shows my device in the center, but says that it is disabled.
I right click and select ENABLE, it says "ENABLING", then "ENABLED", but does not actually enable my device.
