View 9 RepliesI just did a complete upgrade of my PC replacing motherboard, video card, processor and power supply but keeping original hard drives. I did a fresh install of Windows 7 and then upgraded to Windows 10 soon after completely smoothly with no issues. My boot drive and external survived, but for some reason, even though it was handled with great care, my other SATA hard drive doesn't appear anywhere anymore. I can hear it spin when I boot the PC but it doesn't appear in BIOS or in Disk Management. I changed the cable and the port it was plugged into but no dice.
If it is indeed dead...what are my options in recovering the files? It is essential I get these files back!
It kind of worked on and off when plugged into my brother's PC which uses a different make of motherboard...
Problem: When I click on my H: drive or try to access it from the command line, it gives me an access denied error. However, all of the applications that I have installed on that drive run without issue. So, there is some access there. (See attached images. The first shows the hard drive state in diskmanager and in windows explorer. The second image shows the minecrafter launcher profile (that it is stored in H: and the application running, proving that there is some access.
System: Home built PC: (C:) 240GB SSD for OS, (E:) 1TB HDD for file storage and backup, (H:) 1TB HDD for large applications and video editing files. All drives are Simple, Basic, and none have encryption. All use the SATA connectors.
Process: I had Windows 7 Home 64 bit with, among many other things, Comodo Internet Security, Virtualbox, ImageDisk.
During the upgrade process, I noticed that Windows 10, during the upgrade, ran the file system check and fix "problems" on the H: drive.
(Side note) Having forgotten to uninstall Comodo before the upgrade, I did not have network after the upgrade. The fix was non-trivial as I had to use a second computer to download the unofficial comodo uninstaller. Reboot. Uninstall the network devices. Reboot. And once Windows 10 was up and running, it reinstalled the network devices and the network was available.
Still, whether before or after the Comodo uninstall and reinstall, the uninstall of ImageDisk, or the uninstall of the Virtualbox network device, I have no access to the H: drive.
Pen Drive and external hard drive keep getting errors! So I select to fix the problem scandrive recommended scan and repair. But there's never anything wrong with them it reports! And it takes ages to scan it takes 10-15 minutes for 32GB pen drive. Windows 7 Pro done it in a flash! Anything I can do about it.
View 1 RepliesIn the past few days my external hard drive makes the sound (windows notification) like when I unplug it from my desktop. Then about 5 seconds later I get another sound and notification asking me how I would like to view content for G: (my external hard drive). I only have it attached to use for backups and I've checked my back up program (easeus) and my backups haven't been happening either. I used crystaldisk to check it and it's healthy. Why it would be essentially shutting itself off and on?
View 9 RepliesI was under the impression that I was going to have a hard drive failure and purchased a new hard drive and cloned windows to it. it turned out my drive is fine, so I would like to use the drive as a second drive in my system.
if I just plug it in, will my computer boot from the now C: drive or will it boot from the second drive, since it is a bootable drive?
Or can I plug it in after it booted up?
it is installed and the power is connected, but the data cable is not.
I gave my C: drive a name so I can find it in file manager and don't format the wrong drive when I plug in the second drive.
I have a Seagate HDD which has a really dumb APM setting. This makes it spin down and make extra noise.
In Windows 7, I managed to auto disable per session basis, but in Windows 10, this does not seem to work any more.
Are there any proven way to control APM settings in Windows 10? I really can figure it out.
"Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart" This is the message I got when windows 10 stopped
working.. From that it said my computer has an unrepairable problem we will collect the information and restart it for you. It never did restart, so I tried with the windows 10 disk to use start-up repair.. and it told me that the hard drive was locked. So, I had no way to unlock it.. Long story made short. I had to take the hard drive out and hook it up to another computer that has windows 7 installed on it. And it let me unlock the drive, after which i put it back in the computer that it came out of, and it works just fine..
How is one supposed to unlock a hard drive, is there a program to do that? Or did I just luck out, by having another computer to hook it up to. ? I've had this happen on windows 10 more than once..
When I go to Defrag it will say I need to optimize my c drive, but when I do this it keeps coming back as 31% fragmented, I have 98.2 gb free of 192gb. It worked o.k. on W7 but will not work on W10.
View 2 RepliesMy old Windows XP Desktop stopped running 2 weeks ago, with a No OS Found error. Since then I've taken the hard drive out and connected it to my new Windows 10 desktop with a USB 2.0 to SATA Adapter. It does not show up in "My Computer", but is detected in Computer Management.
The drive's an old Western Digital WD2000 one, and started clicking (for a few seconds) as soon as I attached it to the PC w/the USB Adapter. The clicking stopped after that.
It shows up as "Disk 1, Unknown, with the amount of data on it (186.31 GB [out of 200]), and is Unallocated. I've already tried numerous utility and Data Recovery programs, such as Recuva, MiniTool Partition Wizard, EaseUS Data/Partition Recovery. No luck with these.
They were either not detected, or didn't find anything. MiniTool Partition Wizard said it's a "Bad Disk" I
Partition Find and Mount is still conducting a scan which has been going for the past 7 hours (35%).
BTW - I really can't leave the hard drive on for the night to conduct a long scan. It's been overheating, and I already have a large fan next to it to cool it down. It's not safe to leave this on for an extended period of time.
Only to find out I bought a USB 3.0 Adapter instead of a 2.0 my old XP supported when It still ran.
I have a 1TB external USB hard drive, it is not showing up in 'my computer' the light on the hard drive is constantly flashing and randomly beeps and clicks when first plugged in, I have never heard this until today..
I have tried it on two laptops, windows 7 and windows 10 and in a macbook, does not show up.
I have tried a different cable from another USB device, still no luck.
It appears in device manager which says it is running normally, I have tried un-installing and re-installing, no luck! In disk manager it says the disk is unknown and not initialized, see screenshot.
Reading other forums suggest trying Minitool partition wizard it comes up but as 0GB, screenshot
When I plug my external into my pc it tells me it's unable to use and to format the drive. So I try to do so, and Windows tells me that there's a program using the external drive.I attempt to format anyway since I know there's no programs using the drive, and after a minute the formatting comes to a stop and I get a message saying it's unable to format. I've tried formatting it via 'This PC' and DIsk Management in Windows 10. Tried Quick Format as well and nothing is progressing.
View 9 RepliesI'm going under Computer Management>Disk Management and have deleted a partition which gave me the unallocated 48gb, and I'm trying to add that unallocated space to the main drive (C), and it's not letting me, When I right the C drive there is only a shrink volume option, the extended volume is shaded gray.
I have windows 10, not 8. I'll attach a picture. Dropbox - issue.png
I have an external hard drive that I have used regularly with a Windows 7 machine via esata
that does not show up when plugged into my Windows 10 notebook via USB.
I can see it under the disk management, but there is no drive letter assigned so I cannot access it.
I purchased a 1TB hard drive to place media files on it so that I could plug it into my DVD player which has a USB port. I made sure to format the hard drive to Fat32. What I can surmise is that the 1TB hard drive is too big for the DVD player to read. I plug it in and it says Device Not Supported. But I've successfully plugged in an external card reader and used a 16GB SD card to place files on and it reads them fine. So I'm thinking it's the size of the drive that is the issue.
I might have to partition the hard drive into two partitions. One partition 16gb and then the other partition with whatever is left. They did say they were not sure if there was a way to set it up so the 16gb Partition is what is recognized first when plugged into the DVD player. This way I would transfer movies I want to watch to the 16 GB partition, and transfer them over.
Now when I search hard disk partitions in Windows 10 the manager comes up and I can see the hard drive, but I can not change the size to partition it. It's grayed out. Is there a freeware program that works with Windows 10 that will split the hard drive into two partitions in sizes I specify, and make sure that the 16GB partition is the first one loaded or seen? And if I set it up that way when I plug it into my computer will the computer see both partitions?
I'm trying to change the name of my External Hard Drive as it appears as Local Disk G on my laptop. However, upon trying multiple times it keeps on coming back as Local Disk G.
View 9 RepliesI have an external hard drive and when i try to open it, it says access denied.. when i try to see the ownership, it says unable to determine owner.
When i try to change the ownership through various methods like cmd prompt take own or by going to the properties of the drive, it says unable to set new owner, access is denied...
My external hard drive is showing an error.
G: is not accessible.
The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.
How to fix it without formatting it? Have a lot of file on there that I'd like to recover if possible.
I have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 2TB USB 3.0 external hard drive that I use to store (majority) videos and documents. A few days ago it started giving me this error for every folder and file, and eventually just from trying to access the hard drive itself from This PC:
And this is what shows up in Device Manager:
In Disk Management, this is what shows up at first (first image) and then when I refresh Disk Management through Action > Refresh (second image):
As for specifications wise, I clean installed to Windows 10 Pro N x64 (a day after this error came up when I plugged in the hard drive, actually... Not sure what I was thinking at the time) with what I think are updated drivers for my hardware from the manufacturer's websites. Previously, it was a clean installation of Windows 10 Pro x64 after upgrading from Windows 8.1 Pro x64.
Not sure if this is worth mentioning, but, all my folders and files show up when the computer actually can read the hard drive, I just can't open any of them. I've never had to deal with hardware problems before. I really don't want to lose the files in that hard drive, as I'm not able to make a backup even if it was working (with it being my biggest external to date).
This is what the hard drive shows on Speccy at a glance:
(Is the serial number and firmware version supposed to be the same on all hard drives? )
What partitions I should have on my hard drive after I upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows Home Premium Build 10586. I have some new small partitions and I don't know if they belong to the OS or they got allocated from another source.
View 1 Replieswhere I might be able to find a updated version of the marvell driver that came on my asus mb for my sata III connected hd? it supposed to be a 6gb/sec drive as its a sata III but It doesnt seem to load windows all that quick.
View 9 RepliesI got this PC yesterday and have noticed that there is a random empty drive in This PC. It says "762 GB free of 763 GB."
Does this come with every OS and what is it used for?
I connect my USB 3.0 external hard drive to my laptop and it works but after a few minutes of not using it the disk stops spinning and when I to use it again my computer locks up and after 30-60 seconds it disconnects and reconnects some times. Else I have to pull it out. If I use the drive without a to long pause in between it work perfectly fine but as soon as the drive stop spinning and has to spin up that is where it happened. that feature in the power options turn on where the power to usb does not turn off.
I will look to see it I can change the hard drive shutdown time in properties.
I just upgraded to Windows 10 as I planned to use the weekend to sort out any issues I might encounter during the upgrade. Well boy did I ever. My Seagate 3TB drive decided it no longer wanted to be recognized by Windows anymore. It shows up as a failed/deactivated drive in Disk Management as seen here: [URL] It also shows up in Speccy as a physical drive. I currently have 2TB of data on there (including an OS image I did just before the upgrade as an extra prep step), so reformatting the volume is not an option until I get the data off.
View 9 RepliesBasically i lost everything on my external HDD & the only way to get the drive working again was to format it, That fixed the problem the drive was having (Unknown why data got lost) but if i disconnect the drive & reconnect i get message (the drive is inaccessible & corrupted) Something like that cant remember the wording exactly as its not happening right now, but i know the problem will come back & i will once again lose all my data, as its happened 5 times over 2 week period..
If i restart the PC, after startup its the only drive that's not visible either in (This PC), (Disk Management) or in (Device Manager) which leaves me with no option but to disconnect & reconnect the drive in order for it to be visible & Accessible, Now sometimes it works fine but once it becomes inaccessible it stays that way unless i format it Losing all data once again ...
Relevant Information of Drive
3 Years old
On 24/7 (As i never turn PC Off)
Its a Iomega eGo 1Tb External HDD
I Used software Hard Disk Sentinel & it says the drive is Healthy & in good working Condition
I have a 120 gig solid state hard drive, that I have my OS installed on (Windows 10)
I was going to install windows 7 on a second partition on that hard drive, so I shrank the current partition and it gave me unallocated space.
I had a few people tell me it wasn't possible to install windows 7 on the same hard drive as windows 10... for some reason or another.
So I decided to expand the partition back to its original size (the whole hard drive).
Before I shrunk the partition.. I had 60 gigs left, I shrunk it by 20 to install windows 7 on.
Well after some people told me it wouldn't work. I decide to re-expand the partition to take back up the whole drive.
Problem is, when I did that.. I loss that 20 gigs, it says that 20 gigs is 'used' space now. I tried scanning the hard drive for errors and defragging (won't let me defrag that drive.. I assume cause its either a solid state drive or the windows drive)
I don't know how to get that lost 20 gigs back.
