Drivers/Hardware :: Seagate Free Agent Backup Drive Not Working

Aug 10, 2015

Ever since I installed Windows 10 my Seagate Free agent back-up drive doesn't work. When I try to back-up my computer the Seagate manager says there's no drive connected. When I look on the file explorer the Seagate drive shows. but the the Seagate manager still shows no drives connected.

Is this a compatibility issue with Windows 10, or am I missing something?

The File Or Directory Is Corrupted And Unreadable - Seagate Backup

Aug 15, 2015

I just moved from 64 bit Windows 7 to 10 so I backed everything on my 4TB Seagate Backup Plus external drive. I also have Carbonite so all is not lost if it comes to that. I made a base Image using Macrium Reflect that I still would like to get back though.

Anyway the drive was working fine until I remotely (from my chair downstairs) was doing things on my PC. I occasionally take over my computer remotely if I'm watching tv and remember I need to do something. So I was in the process of moving files from the Backup Plus to Windows 10 that's when the drive locked up. I went upstairs and got on my computer and found out Windows 10 was now not recognizing the Backup Plus. Rebooting didn't work so I shut the drive off overnight and plugged it back in today but now get "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable".

Disk Management shows ok and I ran Seagate's SeaTools for Windows in "Short Drive Self Test" mode and it also shows 'Pass".

I tried Recuva and a scan showed a lot of files but I'm not exactly sure how to use this... I set option to scan for undeleted files. I then made a folder on my C drive desktop to dump everything but then it says "These file names are too long to be recovered to the selected destination (634). Do you want to change the destination folder." Anyway so where is it wanting me to put everything?

What are the steps (and software) I should be doing to (1) recover my files and (2) what I need to do to use the Backup Plus drive again.

Seagate USB 3.0 Drive Keeps Disconnecting And Remounting?

Sep 24, 2015

I have a Seagate 1TB USB 3.0 Expansion Drive (see signature for other hardware.) Ever since I upgraded to Windows 10, it has an annoying habit of disconnecting and then remounting. When it remounts, Windows Explorer pops up over whatever I'm doing, even full screen activities like gaming or video playback.

It worked fine under Windows 7, and seems to exhibit no problems whatsoever under Linux, to it doesn't appear to be a hardware problem. Maybe there's just a way to keep Windows Explorer from popping up when it remounts?

Networking :: File Backup Not Working With A Network Drive

Dec 29, 2015

I recently set up a Homegroup on a Win10 laptop so I can see another PC on the network. That PC is running Win8.1, and I would like to use it for file backup. The devices are visible on both ends of the network and have connectivity, but when I choose to use the File Backup function from the laptop, nothing transfers and eventually I have to restart because of no response from the system. Also, my browser will stop working. I have added the PC as a network location and specified the location for backup, but is has locked up twice now. Could this be a routing issue? I previously ran the auto backup feature to a memory card, but need more space.

Can Use Free Upgrade On A Different Drive

Aug 7, 2015

I have windows 8.1 Pro on my SSD and windows 7 home premium on my HDD(which I don't use). I want to have Windows 10 on my SSD.

I don't want to upgrade to windows 10 pro since when Microsoft switch to a subscription based service I would (presumably) have to pay more, for features I don't really use.

I understand that my windows 7 home premium is also eligible for the free upgrade and will upgrade to windows 10 home, which is fine for me.

So, if I were to upgrade to windows 10 on my HDD with windows 7, and then perform a clean install on my SSD, will it pick up that I already have a license or will I have to buy a windows 10 home license key?

Hard Drive Does Not Have Enough Free Memory?

Mar 27, 2015

I cannot remember what the Hard Drive requirements are for the Windows 10 upgrade but I  do remember that when I read it I immedialy concluded my Tablet has nowhere near enough free space, with only just over 3 GB at present (and likely to become less).  Am I right in thinking that the fact that W10 will be replacing W8.1, so the memory memory it occupies. will be available, does not alter this?  It might be a daft question (I have quite limited expertise!) but it got me wondering if an external USB HD or some other device can be used?  I have read that any recent machine (mine is only a few months old) which can run Windows 8 now, will be able to run Windows 10. The suppliers of my Quantum View 10.1 Tablet emailed customers while ago to tell us we would be eligable for the upgrade.

Clean Install Will Free Up C Drive Storage Space?

Aug 3, 2015

I recently upgraded my Windows 7 laptop to Win10. However, before I did the upgrade, I did a clean factory install of Win7, kept installing Automatic Updates until I get the option to Upgrade to Win10.

I have a 500gb HDD, that is partitioned in to two, C: for OS and D: for Local Disk (storage), currently the C: drive is 58.5gb, of which I have 13.5gb left, this is with having only Windows 10 installed AND Printer Driver and Software.

Is there any benefit of creating the Windows 10 media disk, reformatting with this Win10 disk, and getting rid of any of the rubbish that might of been installed in the process of doing a clean install of Win7.

OR re partitioning the Drive, so I can steal some of the storage from D: and give it to C: . I have 397GB of unused space on D:

I also just noticed, it states I have a Partition called RECOVERY, however, I don't seem to have this on My Computer view.

Drivers/Hardware :: F Drive Isn't Working

Aug 15, 2015

My F drive isn't working. I can't access it from my card reader or the card slot in my computer.Location is not available.F: is unavilable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted, and then try again. If the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network or internet and then try again. If the location still can't be found, it might have been moved or deleted. I tried reassigning a new drive letter, but the computer won't let me. I also disabled and then enabled the drive to no avail.

Drivers/Hardware :: DVD Drive Was Working Under Win7 - Completely Disappeared

Jul 31, 2015

This issue is as simple as the subject line. My DVD drive was working fine under Windows 7. In fact I even installed 10 from a burned DVD. Now it is completely MIA. No exclamation-marked devices on device manager or anything. I did try a couple solutions that were supposed to work on a similar problem on 8, namely registry changes, but they did no good.

Performance :: Backup Add A Drive?

Jan 2, 2016

Jan. 3rd 2016 I have a 931 GB external HDD using a brick power supply and connected by USB. I wish to do weekly backups to it via Start/Settings/Update & Security/Backup.

It is not listed when I click Add a drive, although I can see and read it in This PC. I tried a restart but that has not worked. I do see a couple of USB sticks which are too small. Trying via Advanced settings is the same.

Prior to trying to add this drive I scrolled down and followed the instruction which said to delete the previous drive which was also an external HDD connected by sata. I used THAT drive via Macrium and it got carried over in the W10 update from W8.1.

Could Not Boot From Bootable Backup Or USB Drive

Jan 17, 2016

After the recent update I had some problems and decided to reset my system. For some reason I could not boot from my bootable backup drive or a bootable USB drive. I have software which came with the external drive and it previously backed up and created the bootable USB drive. So, I reset the pc and of course it wiped out all my programs like the backup drive software, Ccleaner, Malwarebytes, etc. etc.. I reloaded the software for my backup drive and then was able to restore from the image which I had previously created. Of course I had to get the update again but it went well yhis time. All the programs were there and my system is operating flawlessly once again. The image backup was a lifesaver.

I highly recommend the external usb backup drive for recovery purposes. It was extremely easy to create the bootable image backup (for recovery) and keeps a running backup as well. There are numerous ways to create a backup but this was just too easy and, as it turned out, worked well for me.

System Image Backup To USB Drive?

Apr 1, 2016

I recently purchased a Lenovo 900 ultrabook, and proceeded to upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro (using a Windows 7 Ultimate product key). Now that I have done this the factory "restore" does not include my upgrade and I am concerned that I would lose it if I ever needed to restore.

So, I am trying to do a full system image backup to a flash drive, but Windows 10 says that the drive is not allowed for this. I can create the USB drive as a network share and get the backup to work using that method, but I don't really trust that it will work properly.

How to do a full system image backup to a USB drive in Windows 10 that you trust will work in the case a restore is needed?

Low Disk Space System Backup Drive

Nov 13, 2015

I am getting a low disk space message from my system backup drive. It's 1 TB and it is full. There are not any files that I can delete. They are all system files.

Two questions:

1. Why is it so large?
2. Can I install a new larger drive and have it move the system files there?

Can't Create Recovery Drive - No Eligible Drives To Do Backup

Jul 29, 2015

So I've completed the upgrade from 8.1 pro to Windows 10 pro. I want to do a clean install so I went to control panel to create a recovery drive. After clicking next through the first screen it appears to search for eligible drives to backup to (I'm just assuming here, and I do have a 32GB USB drive plugged in), then just gives up and says it can't do it. No explanation of what went wrong. So I guess no clean install for me..

Backup And File History Not Working

Jan 26, 2016

I am trying to backup my data (not a system image) to an external hard drive Although I have succeeded in backing files up the system does not work automatically (as it implies it will) and the only work around seems to be to select an alternative drive each time.

In addition if I use File History to attempt a backup the system appears to write to the external hard drive but nothing gets recorded. There is sufficient space for the data (12GB - hard drive total size 120GB) so I do not think it is lack of space.
