Just got a new pc, i7-870 and it has 4 slots, only 2 are used. Ram is DDR3 pc3-10600 (cpuz shows it as pc3-10700) so 1333ghz I believe. Mainboard is an HP 304Bh and I'm wondering if I can just install ONE 4gb stick that is also a ddr3 pc3-10600 or will I need to get 2x2gb? I'm not entirely tech savy but I saw something about dual channels and that blank channel could lead to issues.
Using that crucial memory upgrade scanner, it says 4GB DDR3 PC3-12800 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.35V 512Meg x 64. Case in point it says pc3-12800 and not 10600. Always thought the specs had to be exact for it to match otherwise it will just downgrade it's speed.
PS: PC can support up to 16gb, and its 64 bit windows 10 if it matters.
Be great if I could just slap a 4gb stick in (so its 2/2/4/blank slot) as it's cheaper than getting 2x2gb. Don't have a budget to really use but I need more ram for gaming and the like.

Had 8.1 then downloaded 10, unfortunately when I originally installed 8.1 I made my C partition too small and it's almost full all the time.
Is there anyway to increase the size?
Also I want to reset my PC right now since it's gotten extremely sluggish for some odd reason and I can't see any thumbnails for many things despite trying loads of stuff suggested on the web.
When resetting will I get any option to change the partition size?

I ran into this problem while on Win7 & found a fix (YouTube - Apple Keyboard Hack - Fully-powered USB ports on a PC!) . Unfortunately, the YouTube video has been removed. I use an Apple keyboard that has 2-USB ports, one on each side of the keyboard. The power limits for these USBs was 100mA on Win7 so using a mouse is OK. But, if I plug in a USB drive or better yet my Wacom Tablet I get an error stating the power is too low to support. I believe the ports need to be 500mA.
I don't recall exactly how the YouTube author changed the registry key value but he did & I used these 2 USBs without problems for 4 years. I'm having trouble finding the USB location using run / regedit. Below are two screen grabs I used in my post 4 years ago. Windows 10 looks a lot different. Anyway, the USB I need is port 3 hub 7. How to navigate the registry key to that location & edit from 100mA to 500mA.

I am trying to install a trial version of Bitdefender TS 2015 64 bit, but keep getting a message saying that my processor is not compatible the 32 bit application as my processor is 64 bit

Can subfolders get a recognizable icon on the total area?
When i right click at a subfolder - properties - customize - mapicons > other icon - browse and then choose the .ico image i want, always get this:
The result:
What I want is the image on the total area of the folder-icon. Is this possible?

Noticed increase in CPU after updating Windows 10 yesterday? My pc has increased from a normal 0% to 5% when not being used to 5% to 10%. In trying to figure it out, it seems part of the usage may be, due to: audiodg.exe, dwm.exe. speechruntime.exe and interrupts. Not sure why this is going on, but am a little concerned.

My laptop have an Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics processor. I have 2GB ram and i am planning to upgrade it to 8GB as my laptop supports upto 8GB( 4GB*2).Now I have only 64MB dedicated graphics memory and around 700 MB shared memory. I wish to know if I can increase my graphics shared or dedicated memory after increasing my RAM . My BIOS does not allow to do it . Is there any other method or any third party software??Is there any way in windows 10 to do this??

I know our Surface Pro 3 has a lower volume threshold when you listen via headphones or speakers. Put the volume at 100% and for some of us, the volume is not loud enough.
I plugged my Surface Pro 3 into my docking station which is then connected to my ASUS VG248QE (external monitor). The volume, in my opinion is not loud enough at 100%. I am not looking to wake up my neighbors but I am looking to listen to a movie/TV show loud enough where the AC noise does not get in the way or any external outside noise.

I have a high resolution screen, so the taskbar seems disproportionately small by default/ In prior versions of Windows I would just increase the taskbar height and icons would adjust in size accordingly, but not so with Windows 10. How can I resize them, or is this deature just not implemented yet? I am using build 10130

Any way to increase the amount of items can be stuffed into a taskbar jumplist. My reason is, I've used the jumplist feature in Windows 7 for Steam to give quicker access to some of the options you can only access by right-clicking the tray icon (i.e., set friends status to online/away/offline, open settings, server browser, screenshots, etc.) using these settings:
In Windows 7 all of these options were displayed in the jump list with the last launched game at the top, in Windows 8/8.1 it seemed that they lowered the number of jumplist items by 1, as I no longer had the most recent game at the top, in Windows 10 Tech Preview, it was the same as Windows 8 until a recent build which redecorated all of the jumplists.

My SUPERAntispyware (free) seems to do a better job than Norton at blocking tracking cookies. It blocked 7 or 8 a day on average on my Win7. It's just stopped 257 that have arrived in the past TWO days on my new Win10. Nearly everyone had the name Microsoft in its title.
(1) Should I just accept that this is now the normal way of life and not get angry with Microsoft for the intrusions?
(2) Does Windows Defenders block tracking cookies? Being cynical, is it programmed to let through all those with Microsoft in its name?

I would like to change the size of text in certain windows. In this screenshot you can see a window with somewhat small text which I would like to enlarge. Ironically, it's explaining my options for increasing the size of text in some situations but it doesn't appear to offer an option to increase the size of itself. This however, is the text I want to increase the size of. I don't spend much time reading titlebars because there isn't a lot to read. There is much more reason to increase the size of text in these dialogues or whatever they're now called.

How to increase the size of the applet windows that windows 10 opens for, in this case "OPTIONS" under TOOLS in Media Player. In the screen shots attached the window simply gobbles up the dialogues and options under almost all register tabs.
One can also observe the same behavior under such windows of some other dialogue boxes of some other software applications i.e. (Preferences) Adobe's Dreamweaver, Photoshop etc. It is not the case with all applet windows, but only some. I am using a large Samsung 26" screen so the screen size etc. can't be the problem..
I am sure there is some setting somewhere that allows one to change the size. It is quite frustrating and security risk otherwise, not being able to access the settings of an application.

I just upgraded my lenovo z500 non-touch to windows 10, and i've been experiencing some problems. first, which is the most annoying, my start menu wont come up, i restarted a number of times and i tried the thing you copy in powershell and still didnt work. and also my brightness level is stuck, if i hit the + or - brightness on keyboard the brightness level meter on my screen changes but the actual brightness level of my screen doesnt move.

I am having Dual Boot PC XP and Windows 10 on different hard disk. Windows 10 have been upgraded from Windows 7 but the System Reserved Partition on Windows 10 remained 100 MB ( 30 MB is free space ), wherein if we clean install the Windows 10 then System Reserved Partition is 350 MB. Now the problem, if I create a backup then the minimum 50 MB free space is required in System Reserved Partition otherwise backup fails. I tried command fsutil usn deletejournal which was advised by someone but it increase the free size from 20 MB to 30 MB only. I am hesitant to use partition manager software because once I have used this on another PC on a simple partition and though it has increased the size of the partition but data of my other partition was deleted.

I am unable to turn off pw protection or to lengthen the timeout settings for my display. I have spent much time pondering what I am missing but now i have tried every sleep/power save/security setting known to man and microsoft and dell and I can not turn this feature off nor can I lengthen the duration of idle time allowed prior to screen powered down.

It is easy to increase the time an Outlook 2013 Desktop Alert stays on for a long time (hours or maybe all day) by using the registry hack below in Windows 7. This won't work under Windows 10. The longest time I can get by any method, Control Panel or hack is 5 minutes. How to make it at least a couple of hours or preferably all day?

my game volume and my chat volume are mixed so that when I turn up my chat volume, my game volume also turns up. when I turn up my game volume, it doesn't turn it up, but when I turn up my chat volume, it turns up both my game and chat volume. How can I fix it so that my game volume and chat volume are different?

Why can Microsoft understand I don't want to use these POS Realtek drivers. I use to disable driver updates from Windows 10 by going into Device Installation settings and Never install drivers from Windows update but now since the last stupid update everytime the POS Realtek drives install automatically no matter how many times I roll back and remove them. I hate the Realtek drives because the audio is super loud and sounds terrible. I just want to use the Microsoft HD Audio Driver which sounds great and uses little resources but no Windows 10 decides that the POS Realtek driver is better.

Just like the title says, I don't want the realtek audio drivers as it completely messes with my audio and also doesn't correctly switch when i plug in headphones for example.
It also doesn't allow for the 'speaker fill' enhancement to be used when playing stereo content through surround sound.
Windows itself does a far better job as opposed to realtek.
Every time i uninstall realtek it automatically gets reinstalled.

Upgraded old laptop (HP Pavilion dv2225) to WinX and everything works except for sound. Device Manger (Win key+ X) shows no missing drivers for sound. Used to play AoK under Win 7.
