External usb sticks or drives list twice in the file-manager.
Tried the advice in this text. It lasted only until my last update. Then it was back to dual entries again.
Would like a permanent solution. Maybe a .reg?
I have 3 flash drives that, for some reason, no longer function regardless of which USB port they are attached to. They display as if they are ready but indicate "not responding" as soon as I try to access them. I see message "not migrating" under Events in their properties. This is a problem that has just arisen. I've been running Windows 10 since official release.
View 5 RepliesSo I got a new asus M5a97 for a new socket and whatnot and now when I shut down there are 2 issues (title bar not long enough for both). The first is whenever you shut it down it leaves all usb ports powered.
The second is that every second time you try to boot it goes to the asus screen where there's meant to be the little circle made of dots spinning and no circle appears nothing happens. Hardware all seems fine so not sure what needs changing.
I have an HP Laptop that has an audio driver with a hardware ID of
HDAUDIOFUNC_01&VEN_111D&DEV_76E5&SUBSYS_00000100
However, the only driver available is for windows 8.1 and this driver installer is made for my specific laptop model. The thing is, the hardware ID listed above is NOT included in the inf file of the installer. Well, to be specific, the subsys ID. How is this possible?

Since I put vmWare 10 on my laptop , my external HDD wont initialize. it says its there but when i try to initialize it tells me my drive is too small for GPT, Its 500gb. When I installed VMWare i might have had the external connected and i believe i opted for to split partitions into 8 parts. I have some data and files on the drive that i need but once i take them off i will just format it. So how can i initialize the drive and/or get my data and store it some where safe? I am running windows 10 BTW
View 1 RepliesI recently bought a toshiba satellite c-55 laptop, as soon as i got it i upgraded to windows ten. i do not know if the usb ports worked before my upgrade, but they do not work now. i tried to download drivers but nothing has worked.
I know i have power to the usb's because my usb hub lights up when i plug it in. the device manager says the usb's are working but they are not. Is there a way to see if it is a hardware problem?
How do I set a Windows 10 pc to see all drives, incl USBs? I'm on a new Dell laptop.
View 2 RepliesMy toshiba 1tb external hard drive currently says it is a raw file system and i cant seem to format it no matter what i do. I dont care for what is inside (only one word file) but i just want to be able to use it again. Is there anyway i can format the HDD and make it usable again?
View 3 RepliesIn the past few days my external hard drive makes the sound (windows notification) like when I unplug it from my desktop. Then about 5 seconds later I get another sound and notification asking me how I would like to view content for G: (my external hard drive). I only have it attached to use for backups and I've checked my back up program (easeus) and my backups haven't been happening either. I used crystaldisk to check it and it's healthy. Why it would be essentially shutting itself off and on?

Problems: 1 of the drives will keep running randomly all night (and gets real hot) after PC shut down. When trying to write a batch to one of the drives explorer keeps trying to access the drive, cannot open it and becomes unresponsive (task bar icons disappear).
Need to undertake the above for my daughter's college course. Haven't a clue where to start and I am not particularly technical (understatement). Have found a lot stuff here about merits of FAT and exFat, but just need a working how to. Video will be involved at full 1080p so I suspect that the 4gb limit will be a hindrance (assuming 3 minutes per gb).
View 4 RepliesI recently bought a new PC with win 10 on board. I now find that I want to retrieve some data from my old PC which is unserviceable.
I purchased a 22 pin sata to usb cable. When plugged in I find the Device manager will not find this new drive. The led's on the cable light up but the drive is not running.
The old HDD is a 3.5" unit which ran on win 7. the old drive is a Samsung HD502HJ/b (part No.) and is in working condition.
I am wondering if it requires a driver of its own? Or something a more diverse problem like a usb 2.0 or 3.0 conflict, maybe.
I just upgraded from Windows 7 PRO to Windows 10. I notice that my external USB 3.0 drives can't be found. Before the upgrade it was ok. The only external device that does show is a Sandisk FIT USB 2.0 stick.

View 1 RepliesWhen I plug my external into my pc it tells me it's unable to use and to format the drive. So I try to do so, and Windows tells me that there's a program using the external drive.I attempt to format anyway since I know there's no programs using the drive, and after a minute the formatting comes to a stop and I get a message saying it's unable to format. I've tried formatting it via 'This PC' and DIsk Management in Windows 10. Tried Quick Format as well and nothing is progressing.
View 9 RepliesI actually have two issues (the second being that the built-in microphone isn't working, but that's the least of my worries). I have my laptop connected to an external monitor & I can't get any non-system sounds to play.
Dell Laptop w/ only HDMI video connected to Dell VGA monitor (no speakers) via an adapter that has a 3.5mm jack for speakers. I can get system sounds via the laptop's speakers, but I can't play MP3s and YouTube videos have no sound. I had things working at one point (no, I cannot remember what I did or can find the tutorial that I used), but after moving my desk (unhooking the laptop from the monitor), cussing at non-functional microphone, and setting things back up, I'm back to no sounds. When I did get the speakers to work, they were working on the 3.5mm headphone/microphone jack on the laptop, but not through the jack on the HDMI/VGA adapter.
I've seen things about disabling the HDMI audio controller. I cannot change the default audio devices via the sound dialog box that is available by right-clicking on the sound icon on the bottom right of the screen. I'm assuming that the Dell speakers that are stuck as default are the on-board ones on the laptop.

I have an external hard drive that I have used regularly with a Windows 7 machine via esata
that does not show up when plugged into my Windows 10 notebook via USB.
I can see it under the disk management, but there is no drive letter assigned so I cannot access it.
I purchased a 1TB hard drive to place media files on it so that I could plug it into my DVD player which has a USB port. I made sure to format the hard drive to Fat32. What I can surmise is that the 1TB hard drive is too big for the DVD player to read. I plug it in and it says Device Not Supported. But I've successfully plugged in an external card reader and used a 16GB SD card to place files on and it reads them fine. So I'm thinking it's the size of the drive that is the issue.
I might have to partition the hard drive into two partitions. One partition 16gb and then the other partition with whatever is left. They did say they were not sure if there was a way to set it up so the 16gb Partition is what is recognized first when plugged into the DVD player. This way I would transfer movies I want to watch to the 16 GB partition, and transfer them over.
Now when I search hard disk partitions in Windows 10 the manager comes up and I can see the hard drive, but I can not change the size to partition it. It's grayed out. Is there a freeware program that works with Windows 10 that will split the hard drive into two partitions in sizes I specify, and make sure that the 16GB partition is the first one loaded or seen? And if I set it up that way when I plug it into my computer will the computer see both partitions?
In recent weeks, it has become impossible for me to safely remove my external drives. (Mostly, I use Western Digital Passports, Passport Ultras, etc).
I am using Windows 10.
I close all of my programs and folders. I get the "busy" message and to try again later. I run Unlocker on the drives, and Unlocker shows no activity or actions that I can take. I bring up my task manager and nothing is running. I try to safely eject from the WD utility and it doesn't work. I try to eject by going to my computer, right clicking on the drive, and ejecting from there. Sometimes I simply wait for half an hour, read some articles, try again. I get the same "busy" or can't shut down message.
I read online that I could try to Device Manager, click on the drive, and under policies select "Optimize for Performance." However, the computer must restart for changes to take place, and when i've tried, I get stuck on an infinite "Restarting" screen.
I read somewhere that I can try to empty a hidden recycle bin on my external, but I can't seem to reveal it?
I'm trying to change the name of my External Hard Drive as it appears as Local Disk G on my laptop. However, upon trying multiple times it keeps on coming back as Local Disk G.

When i try to change the ownership through various methods like cmd prompt take own or by going to the properties of the drive, it says unable to set new owner, access is denied...
I have a Toshiba 2TB Canvio USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive, it was working yesterday but I am now having problems with accessing it today. I connected it today and in my computer it shows up as Local Disk (G:), when I click onto it to try and access it file explorer crashes and only sorts itself out when the drive is unplugged. I tried uninstalling the driving and had no luck with it, can't access anything that involves the hard drive to format it either...

G: is not accessible.
The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.
How to fix it without formatting it? Have a lot of file on there that I'd like to recover if possible.
