Drivers/Hardware :: Re-assign Monitor Identities / Numbers?
Aug 11, 2015
No matter what I do Windows always labels my secondary TV screen as my PC screen and vice versa. It's not really a problem in terms of functionality but it does annoy me that I can't change it. I've been through countless televisions and GPU's over the years but it always remains so possibly there is a good reason for it?
Anyway, the 'issue' has been persistent since W7 (and possibly before?) but I'm wondering if there is now/or always has been a work around for this?
Edit: This post explains it better Changing monitor identities?

I have an external drive where the electronics of the case has failed. I have switched the drive into my pc so that I can use it as an internal drive. The drive is still operational but I cannot see it listed in my drives. Opening up disk manager shows the drive is clearly visible there but is no volume letters assigned to it. The easy option would be to delete the partitions and create new. However, the drive is divided into several partitions which I want to keep as they contain a lot of important data files (years of photos for one thing). Disk manager wont allow me to assign any drive letters (option is grayed out) and disk partition only shows me a single partition not the 5 partitions I have on the drive. how do I assign volume letters without losing my data?

How do I assign a range of letters, that can be used for e.g. external flash disks, external ssd's/hdd's or memory cards?
I have this nasty issue. I have two Network Attached Drives, on server. They work fine, D and E. But I also have NAS [DS 716+] which is on NAS drive F:. Whenever I shut down my DS 716+, and I connect some external hdd/ssd/memory card, it always asigns letter F:. Which makes these devices quiet inaccessible, or hard accessible, I can't double click them to open, I need to type in manually F: etc.
Is there any way via msc or something, where I can define a range of all external hdd's/ssd's and/or memory cards?

I tried the Windows 10 upgrade when it first came out and immediately went back to 8.1 when I couldn't get a single one of my internal SATA hard drives to mount.. I have 5 of them, and I just wasn't about to mess with that when 8.1 had no problems at all. Now I have tried it again and the same problem is happening. I want to see if I can figure it out this time. I am using the latest SATA and Chipset drivers for Win10 64 bit from Gigabyte's Website (I am using a Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H Rev. 1.1.
I am "testing" Win10 using a bootable clone of my main SSD (that still has 8.1 on it) and I upgraded it to 10 just to mess with so I can figure out this ridiculous problem.
My problem is that all of my internal SATA hard drives (with the exception of the system drive) cannot be assigned a drive letter in Disk Management. They show as healthy NTFS partitions but I get 1 of 2 different errors when I click on "Change Drive letters and Paths":
1. "Virtual Disk Manager: The System cannot find the file specified."
2 "Disk Management: The operation filed to complete because the Disk Management Console view is not up-to date. Refresh the view by using the refresh task. If the problem persists close the Disk Management console, then restart disk management or restart the computer" Hint: none of the recommended fixes in the error message change anything.
I HAVE been able to assign the partitions a letter and mount them using a third party disk manager called "MiniTool Partition Wizard". It lets me mount the partitions and it works! ..However, if I restart the computer, I am back to square one and have to manually assign each drive letter for each partition every time.
This is easily the worst experience I have ever had upgrading an OS, and one of the most mind boggling issues I have had with Windows in general. I really like Windows 10 and want to keep using it but half of my hard drives being un-mountable is a complete deal breaker right now.

I recently got a new monitor, an Eizo EV2750, which Windows only recognizes as a generic PnP monitor.
I've tried connecting it thorugh DisplayPort, HDMI and DVI without any luck. The often mentioned sollution, to unlplug everything and wait 10 minutes, does not work either.
The graphics card seems to read the EDID however, as in nVidia control panel it displays correctly as EV2750. Same thing with other applications, like DisplayCAL which I use as my color management system.
Seems like it's only an issue with Windows. This issue, however, also means that I can't get full functionality from the monitor. For instance, the ambient light sensor does not work (which is typical when Windows doesn't recognize the display properly).

I think when I installed Windows XP for the first time, I had to set the decimal value to be shown has "." instead of the comma ","
Some of my Excel sheet seem to be misinterpreted now since I installed Win 10...

After upgrading my Windows 8.1 system to to Windows10 , when I restart or turn on my computer the numbers lock key is not turned on. This may sound trivial, but if I forget about it, my passwords won't work because many of the passwords contain numbers. Is there a way for me to keep the numbers lock key on when my computer restarts?

I'm using static IP for Network #1 which is 192.168.1.110
But when I try joining another network let's say network #2 with a router address like 192.168.43.1 i have to change network settings and use another static IP 192.168.43.10
Can't i just ask windows to use static IP 192.168.1.110 when i try to connect to network #1 and 192.168.43.10 when I connect to network #2 without having to manually configure it every time ?
I really have to use static IPs when connecting to those two particular networks...

What I need to do in Windows 10 to get my Numbers Lock to stay on all the time? Each time I start the system I have to remember to press the Numbers Lock button. On my Windows 7 it stayed on all the time unless I purposely turned it off.
It's no real big deal to push a button, but it's just hard to type in a password or user name and discover it didn't work simply because this darn button was turned off by the system.
I did do a "regedit" and changed the numbers in the box to #2 and restarted the system. When the system restarted the Numbers Lock light was on and I figured I must have fixed it. However when I booted up today it was off again.

By default .cur and .ani cursor files are not associated with opening by any program, and a thumbnail of the pic contents is displayed in the file explorer icons. When I assign a program for opening the file (ThumbsPlus, ACDSee, RealWorld Cursor Editor, whatever), the contents thumbnail changes to that program's icon. No more thumbnail or preview in the pane either. The only way I can get the thumbnail to return is to go to settings and Reset all default apps (which de-assigns those file types back to no program association).
Workaround is I use the "open with" menu command and make SURE I uncheck the "Always use this app to open...." box.
This does not happen to .jpg, .png, .ico or any other graphic type file. They all show thumbnails no matter what the program association. Only .cur / .ani.
Is this something we live with in Win 10? ...or am I "special"? I don't remember seeing this on Win 7, XP or any in history.
The pic below shows the thumbnails with "Opens with: Unknown application". As soon as I assign, no more thumbnail...

It's extremely difficult to assign default programs (either no option for "default" or it just doesn't take my choice) for different media, but once assigned, Win10 later forgets the default program and opens it with another.I have assigned all audio file types (mp3, wav, m3u etc.) to open with Winamp. I've done this by manually assigning a default program for every single file type in "Control Panel - Default Programs - Associate a file type...", because every other option failed.
Later, after a reboot, it still shows "Winamp" in the list of file types. But Win10 now opens m3u-files with VLC player! I'm going hardcore, with registry keys etc - only need the info. some file types are not listed under "Control Panel - Default Programs - Associate a file type...". How can i assign these missing file types to a program?

I was just working with my Task Manager startup items and noticed there are several items that have numbers in parenthesis next to them. What do those numbers mean? Are those numbers telling me I need to do something, as in are they registering any sort of "alert" message?

Windows mobile for phones is currently at build 10134 (according to the latest leak) and the desktop version is at build 10135.
I find this interesting because Microsoft was so behind with their mobile builds vs the desktop. Could this mean Microsoft has played caught up internally with the mobile build?
I don't know, but I would like to start seeing universal updates to universal apps, instead of apps updating separately for desktop and mobile.
Just thought it was interesting to bring up - especially since we all want more stable versions of Windows 10 mobile, maybe it means the core OS is even closer to the desktop version.

I have a dual monitor setup. I have 2 AOC e2252V monitors that would work fine on Windows 7. I have all updated drivers. I've checked the internet for multiple solutions but everyone's problem seemed to be that they didnt extend their displays. My problem is that both windows 10 and my graphics card are not detecting it. They are both connected to the DVI-D connections on my MSI R9 390 graphics card (installed with the latest drivers from 11/30/2015 on the MSI website.) One monitor is hooked up from VGA through a DVI-D adapter to connect to my graphics card. I assumed this wasn't the problem because I did the same thing on my previous card where it worked just fine. I checked to see if one of my DVI-D connections were faulty on the card, but my one monitor hooked up directly through a DVI-D cable (no adapter) works on both of them. If I hook up my TV through HDMI connection, it will detect my TV. I wonder if this is a problem with Windows 10, MSI R9 390, or the adapter. [URL]

I'm having trouble to get picture on my main and only monitor when booting up. The green led indicator on the monitor is just flashing.
Usually I have to push the restart button 10-15 times until picture finally appears. Sometime I am able to log on in the dark. Hit space and logon, then do a win+p until picture appears.
I've tried to uninstall the drivers, but that didn't solve it. I had to use a different monitor to get in for the first time after that. Driver is the most recent one.

Just got a new monitor today, Samsung S24D300HL which I have plugged into my Nvidia Geforce GTX 745 video card via HDMI.
Picture is great no problems there. However I have no sound at all. I've updated my graphics driver via Nvidia Experience program version 361.43 I've right clicked and went to Nvidia control panel audio tab and my monitor was listed there as audio under HDMI still no sound. I've restarted the computer a couple times. Checked Windows update. Switch to a different HDMI cord and still no sound. I've right clicked the speaker in the taskbar and went to playback and what I have is. Nvidia HDMI Output (Port 0) and Nvidia HDMI Output (Port 1) both say not plugged in. I'm confused about the Port 0 and Port 1 because there is only one HDMI spot on the back of the card.

for a month or so I have a samsung tv-monitor (27 TV monitor with the blue Touch of Colour (Black) (LT27D390EW/XU) | Support | SAMSUNG UK ) . Problem is that sometimes (rarely tbh -like once a day) the monitor reboots itself (the screen for 1 sec turns black in my next sec throws the Samsung logo and then it comes back to where it was before.
The monitor is connected to hdmi cable at 1080p resolution and I also have and an internal S / PDIF cable to get the sound passing from the motherboard to the gpu.
I sent the monitor to Samsung where they told me that this is a software problem that comes with windows 10 and that as far as they are concerned there is no solution to this other than reverting to windows 7. I had already installed windows 10.I have already tried installing the drivers that Samsung have on their site but it wont fix the problem.

I'm trying to tune a new AOC monitor, model E2250Swdn, as when plugged into my laptop I noticed that my taskbar on the new monitor appears to have less blue to it than is presented in the attached image below. looking at the screenshot here that I took on my laptop's screen of my taskbar, what adjustments I need to make to the monitor? is it color correction, gamma or brightness?

Bought a new PC with Windows 10 already installed, but have not been able to install a printer in the couple of weeks that I've had it. The print spooler will not start will not start manually or automatically when I try to get it going from the Admin account. Every attempt to install the (HP) printer software ends with Error Code 1722 (Failed to add port monitor to HP discovery port monitor). When I try to start the print spooler, I'm getting error 0x800706b9 (Not enough resources are available to complete this operation). When attempting to check Windows 10 updates, I get error 0x80080005. I'm not sure if I have an issue with my registry or what is going on with this brand new PC and Printer.
