Export Start Menu Layout ( Tile Arrangement ) Without PS
Dec 22, 2015
I want to export my Start Menu layout to another (local) account.
However, when using Powershell's Import-StartLayout, I receive an 'access denied' error, it seems that the command tries to access the (hidden) C:UsersDefault folder as I set C: as -MountPath, perhaps this is just a minor issue, perhaps not.
I also tried copying and changing perms of the C:Users[username]AppDataLocalTileDataLayerDatabase folder, to export my start menu and to lock it, but changing any perms (admin or user) to that folder, resulted in corrupted boots, rendering windows slowly and with half its accessibility, I had to do a full system repair (twice), and copying that folder isn't even possible whilst windows is active. But I found out that to lock it, the Registry DWORD ''NoChangeStartMenu" sufficed. But my problem to transfer the settings, the tiles arrangement, persists.
I figured to leave that TileDataLayerDatabase folder with its data alone, and to move on to another solution, being thus the PS command, as described above. I got the info (about that folder) from somewhere on the Internet, someone claimed that the windows 10 Start Menu configuration is stored in it, my advice though : don't touch it!
I'm quite familiar with using the Registry (Users, never LM) to alter perms, either with DWORD's or Key Perms, as well as exporting and executing registry files. I've been searching for some key or value in the Registry, that relates to the arrangement of the Start Menu Tiles, (I know where the shortcuts are in explorer), but no luck there... (like ExplorerTaskband relates to the Taskbar pins)
Thus, given that the StartLayout commands don't work out for me, and well, I don't really like using them either, I'm placing this desperate request, for some knowledge on where I can find the Start Menu Tile arrangement, or how I could export and import it without the StartLayout commands.
PS : The appsFolder.itemdata-ms file as well as its relatives, as they were used in the Appdata to transfer the Start Menu Layout in some versions of windows 8, no longer exist in 10, at least not where they used to be, also I don't have GPO, and prefer Regedit over it.

after updating win7 to win10 i immediately customized my start menu tiles and it looked really awesome while still being organised. After encountering numerous problems with poorly migrated programs i did a fresh install ( like a month ago) and havent been able to find that same perfect arrangement.
where is the layout for the tiles in the start menu stored?
i still have the .vhd from the backup so i can find a file if necessary, but i dont know where the info is stored.

my startmenu in Windows 10 (build 10130).At the moment i have in my startmenu a maximum of 3 (normal sized) tiles in a row. But I would like to have 4 tiles in a row.
I know that this is possible because i had it a little time before in the same build. But after a little crash and a recovery of the system it changed to a 3tile menu.

The ability to pin a shortcut to the left hand of the start menu was a function apparently removed in RC. This really affected my productivity with 10 so I reverted to 7 after a week. I would like to go back to 10 ....

How do I narrow the tiles column in the start menu?
I have unpinned many of the tiles on the start menu and moved others around so that I have only one row of tiles and I would like to make the column narrower, but I haven't been able to. I made the double arrows show on the right side, and I click and hold the arrows to move it to the left, but nothing happens. Am I missing something?

Why is it that some programs (like Edge, which I don't use), can have a bigger tile, on the start menu, and others (like Firefox, which I use) don't?

There is alot of empty space to the right of my start group and I can't seem to resize it or delete it, the only way I can interact with that area is if I drag something in it and only can I rename the group.

I have basically given up hope that Microsoft will return the Windows 7 (and before) Start Menu back where it belongs. So I want to play their game and try to modify the tile side. I see that programs that I pin to the Start menu go to the very bottom of the tiles. I added a title called Start List Programs and moved all of the pinned programs under that title.
I am wondering if I could move that title and the list of programs above the Life at a Glance section. I know that every time I pin something to the Start menu I would have to move it to the top but it would be better than having to pull the bar down to the bottom every time I wanted to access something from the Start menu. If that fails, I will see if Classic Shell has a Windows 10 option and go from there.

I am running Windows 10 Build 10130 and none of the apps listed above will launch from the start tile menu or the all apps list. It appears that most of the apps that came with Win 10 won't launch but the apps that I pinned to the start menu work fine. Since I rarely used these apps I don't know how long this problem has been going on. I restored back to an earlier restore point but the problem is still there. I know it is something I screwed up but I can't figure it out.

I have for example two tiles pinned to my start menu in this order from top to bottom in one line:
DocumentsDownloadsGames
I am a person who selects everything in a blink of an eye so in one seconds, right after i click on start button I already have my mouse cursor on the tile I want to click and click it to open the thing I want to open, takes me 1 maybe 1,5 second to do this task. There is an issue with start menu in w10 over here. There is some weird lag or cursor alligement issue for about 1-2 seconds after you open start menu. When you hover over for example Downloads tile, and your mouse cursor is exactly at the downloads tile, instead one tile above the tile you are hovering is hovered and if i press it that tile will open. So if i hover over Downloads, Documents will hover, and if I click, it will open documents. If I hover over Games tile, it will hover Downloads and if I quickly click like i do usually, it will open Downloads folder instead.
The only workaround for this is to either not move my mouse cursor and wait 5-10 seconds for the cursor placement to hover over the right thing (so when im hovering over Games, it will hover over games after those 5 seconds) or if I am constantly moving my mouse cursor around Games tile, then it will hover over that tile 2 seconds later after my mouse cursor has landed on that tile so I can finally click on it and open what I wanted. It is happening every time I open the start menu: Press start button > Hover over tile I want to open > need to move my mouse curcor around that tile for 1,5 ~ 2 seconds, or not move my cursor and wait 5 seconds for windows to actually select that tile > then I can click it, start menu will close, my thing will open > after I need to use start menu again I have to go through the same thing again...

Here's a screenshot of "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialog from a fresh clean install of Windows 10 Pro x64
As you can see, despite its name, it does not have a tab for "Start Menu". I remember that Preview versions of Windows 10 had a "Start Menu" tab. Did they just remove at the last moment? And how I change Start Menu options without that tab?

In Windows 10 regedit freezes when trying to export a registry key. To fix this, open the print dialog (ctrl+p) first, then close it and you can export registry keys.
Original post: Whenever I try to export a registry key from regedit, when I click file->export it freezes. This only occurs in Windows 10, did Microsoft accidentally break regedit or something?

I have both Excel 2000 and Excel 2013 on my Windows 10 machine for reasons that don't need enumeration here. I am working with a program now that will export/import to Excel, but it looks like it might work only with Excel 2013.
However, when I do the export from the program it always exports to 2000. There is not an options or preferences within the program to choose which version of Excel to direct the export.
Is there some way in Windows 10 short of uninstalling Excel 2000 to make 2013 the default choice?

who has just installed Office 2016 on her computer, which was recently upgraded from Win7 to Win10.
She's been using Outlook.com and has accumulated a fair amount of email, contacts and calendar appointments. I've managed to get her email to show up by adding it to Outlook 2016 as a POP3 account. I was able to import her contacts into Outlook 2016 from a file called OutlookContacts.csv. Now I'm trying to get her calendar with all its many calendars and appointments into Outlook 2016.
I'm not sure why but the appointments all show up just fine in Mail and Calendar for Windows 10, even though we did nothing to put them there (as far as we know). But she'd like them to appear when she clicks on the Calendar in Outlook 2016 and I can't find any information on how to do that. I've also looked for some kind of Export function in the Mail and Calendar for Windows 10 app but I came up empty.
How do I get her calendar into Outlook 2016?
I can't be the only one who finds Microsoft *awful* at documenting this kind of basic functionality. Millions of people must have tried to do the same thing before me but if there's any information out there on how to do this, it has eluded me so far....

I have just upgraded to Win10 and most items on the "Power User Command Menu" do not work if the menu is accessed by right-clicking the Start Menu button on the Task Bar. The only items that do work are Search, Run, Shut down and Desktop. If the menu is accessed by the other means, the menu items work fine.
I've tried SFC and a day searching the web with no luck.
The computer is a Toshiba laptop running an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5500 with 4 Gb of memory. I don't know what the proper name for the "Power User Command Menu" may be, but that's the only way I've seen it referenced elsewhere.

I wanted to add some programs to the top of the left side of the start menu (free space on the screenshoot). I have read about the "Pin to Start List" if you rightclick while holding shift. But this seems not to be working anymore!?!?! Is there another possibility to customize this list or to re-add the function? I don't want to use "recently added apps" or something like that ...

I'm running the RTM on a netbook and have noticed that, unlike in Windows 7/8/8.1, I'm no longer able to hit Start and type in an executable. I have a bunch of portable apps that I typically type in and pull up. Now, the Start menu search pulls up ever OTHER file except the executable. It's very annoying and don't see why this shouldn't work.
What's worse, is if I pin the app to the start menu, it doesn't search it then. Say, I pin "puttyportable.exe" as a shortcut (and rename it to just PuTTY) to the start menu. Typing in "putty" gives me nothing - just the same associated files that were in the puttyportable folder (ini files, etc).

I installed Windows 10 very recently and I like it, but I have a VERY BIG show-stopper: when I try to do search in the start menu, it's terrible; it cannot even find an application that I have manually pinned to start. I didn't have any such problem with Windows 8.1. I have also installed some other desktop applications, for example GitHub for Windows, but when I start to to type "Git...", it only finds "GitHub" and it cannot find "Git Shell" and I have to go to all programs, find "G", then expand the folder for this application and run that application.
