External HD Not Being Recognized
Mar 23, 2016
So after rebuilding my desktop, I boot everything up and do all the right things(drivers updated and whatnot). Before I do this though I make sure all of my USB plugins are in the exact same place they were in on the old machine(This probably doesn't mean anything but Im neurotic). I go to access my external and I can't find it! I go into the bios and it recognizes that there is a HD attached but no drive letter or anything. I try disk manager but all i see is my 2 tb on an empty letter area.

I recently upgraded my desktop from Windows XP Pro to Windows 10 Pro but have had no luck yet accessing the data on either of my two external HDDs even though my system is fully updated with Threshold 2.
The external HDDs are as follows:
WD My Book 1TB (USB 2.0) NTFS
Hitatchi Touro Desk Pro 2TB (USB 3.0) NTFS
Neither appear in File Explorer but they are correctly identified in Devices and Printers. They also appear in Disk Management but are listed as “unknown” and “not initialised”. I get an I/O device error if try to initialize them using MBR or a “disk is not convertible because the size is less the minimum size for GPT disks” error message if I choose GPT.
I have also tried plugging the external HDDs into different USB ports (both 2.0 and 3.0) and re-installing the "USB Attached SCSI (UAS) Mass Storage Device" driver in Device Manager but all to no avail.
I know both my external HDDs still work fine as they were recognized and readable when I tried them on a different Windows 7 machine. I am also fairly confident that the Windows 10 installation is OK on my target PC as I did a clean install from a bootable ISO file.
I read somewhere that Windows 10 may have an issue with external HDDs over a certain capacity, and sure enough, when I hooked up an aged 250MB external HDD it worked straight away, no problem.how I can get Windows 10 to recognize external HDDs with a higher capacity?

I was moving video files (AVI) from an external backup drive (WD Element) to another external backup drive (Seagate expansion) after having moved another video file from my laptop (Acer) to that Seagate external drive. The night before I had moved some video files from the WD to the Seagate with no problem but using a different laptop (Sony). These video files are all rather large and I can tell that the space is still being allocated on the Seagate because while the folder cannot be seen the space that was there is still being used by the Seagate because I am missing over 100GB which would be about the size of that now missing folder.
What happened was there was a message that the Seagate drive could not be recognized while the files were in the process of being moved to that drive from the WD. This is after I had already moved a video file of about 26GB with no problem into that now missing folder. When I saw the message I attempted several times to move files to that Seagate drive but I could not so I unplugged the Seagate drive from that laptop (Acer) then reinserted it into the usb port. I got a repair message that said it needed to be repaired because some files were corrupted and that no data would be lost but the drive would be unavailable during the repairs so I checked ok. It took only about 30 seconds and it said the repairs were completed and the drive was available but I noticed that the folder that I was moving the video files to was not gone.
As I stated there are more than 100GB of files in that folder some are video and others are audio recordings that were created by using the myrecording (audio and video) features of the Acer laptop and they are very important so I need to figure out if they can be retrieved from that Seagate drive. I have not copied anything else onto that Seagate drive but I have plugged it into the Acer computer to ensure it is being recognized. Both the external drives WD and Seagate are plug and play that are powered from the usb -- they have no power adapters.

Running powershell as Administrator or running the ISE as Administrator (which shows Admin at top of one of the two images) isn't returning what I am expecting for looking at tasks scheduled. What's up with the output in the images? I was running Windows 7 Home Premium and updated to Windows 10 end of July/early August. I have another thread on an issue that I haven't been able to resolve and was hoping maybe using Powershell would locate that issue (monitor turning on by itself after physically being turned off via power button at ~3am daily (probably 2:5x timeframe but it happens daily).

Yesterday I inserted a CD to install driver for my new headset. The CD-R open, close normally and I also heard the CD spinning. But not thing happened in my laptop at all. I checked This PC: no CD drive (before upgraded to win 10, I had installed win 8.1 and the CD dive was drive F). In Device Manager, there's no CD/DVD ROM section, even i had checked Show hidden device in View tab.I tryed every methods found online, but not fixed. Here's the details:
1. Try ALL METHODS in this link: [FIX] Optical Drives (CD/DVD) Icon Not Showing in My Computer Window - AskVG
-> nothing
2. Try to uninstall Channel 0 and 1 under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller. But as you can see in the picture above: there are no Channels under IDE...Controller. Tryed to uninstall Intel(R) 8 Series...Controller and rebooted, nothing happen
3. Try to update drivers using IOBit Drivers Booster PRO but all drivers are up-to-date.

I got a 128GB Flash Drive which I proceeded to install a portable, bootable Fedora install on. Of course, naturally, since Fedora is light weight, I had all sorts of other room left over. However, when I plug the USB drive back into the main Desktop, it no longer asks me what I want to do with the USB drive, even with AutoPlay stuff disabled. It's as if the USB Drive doesn't exist.
However, I checked quickly on one of my laptops that has never seen the drive and the AutoPlay on that device immediately popped in. When I selected "view files and folders", voila, I could see the Flash Drive with a folder for the Fedora install and plenty of other open space. How can I force my computer to see this Flash Drive all over again? it's doing the same thing with the storage on my fiance's iPhone. since I can't see her phone anymore when I plug it in (even iTunes doesn't see it).

Error message says module not installed. After upgrading i was supposed to receive KB3051704 update to correct this problem. Is that what's wrong or something else. I need to be able to use the dvd drive. I never received the update.

I have installed Win 10 with some problems but most of it is settling down now. I noticed that my FreeAgent desktop external drive is not recognized by the system. My original 2008 was replaced in 2012 with model ST305004FDAIEI-RK. I don't find this model# on the Win10 compatibility list but there are some very similar. I downloaded the Seagate software but when I run the program it tells me that no external drive has been located. There is no device driver and I don't know how to get one.

After altering some of my account settings i now find my password is now not recognised. I know the password is correct. Unfortunately i didn't make a password recovery disc. There are no other options on the login screen i am completely locked out. Surely there must be some way of getting back in short of re-installing.

I am running windows 10 on my desktop and I have it hooked up to a TV to have two displays. I am using an HDMI splitter (2 Port HDMI Video Splitter from StarTech.com) but my Windows 10 is not recognizing the second display. The TV displays the same screen as my monitor but will not allow me to "extend" because not second screen is being recognized. What could be the issue?

I noticed recently on Teamspeak that I've got some packet loss, up to 10% at a time. This has shown itself in games as well, most notably League of Legends where my ping will be stable, yet I lose control of my character for up to five seconds at a time. I tried doing a test on pingtest.net but it says that Java doesn't seem to be installed on my browser, why? I've un-installed and re-installed Java but it still says this message: "Pingtest.net requires Java for packet loss testing, but it does not appear to be installed in your browser. Click here for assistance."

I have a pre-built laptop with official W7 on it. The HD had a failure last year and since I was too busy to take care of it I gave it to a friend who just cloned it. Result, now Windows is not recognized as legit and no system feature works (including system restore, the search function, Windows updates). I still used it without problems but now I built one for myself and I'm giving the laptop to my father, and thought the best way to clean all that mess was to use the free Windows 10 upgrade to format everything and do a clean install with that.
Is there any way I can "trick" my system in thinking it's legit again so that I can get the free Windows 10 upgrade?

I installed Windows 10 as an upgrade to Windows 8. My Dell laptop does not see the DVD drive. I had no success getting the drive to work in Windows 8 and (maybe of course) it doesnt see it now. This seems to be a common problem I have tried numerous fixes but have not had success. What is the latest and greatest solution?

It really isn't my day. I recently upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 and previously my DVD/CD Drive was working perfectly. Now, nowhere on my PC, and I mean nowhere, is my DVD/CD drive recognised as existing. There is no DVD drive showing in Device Manager or in Settings>Devices.
I have taken the side panel off my PC and all cables are properly plugged in.
I have not tampered with the BIOS at all.

I am trying to restore a Windows 10 system image with no luck. Here is what led up to this situation:
1. Upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 when it became available the end of July.
2. Made a System Image (ssd m.2 mounted on the motherboard) after I was to a point where everything seemed to be working fine on 8/12/15 and saved the image to a separate hard drive on my system (E: drive).
3. Updated the bios from 2012 to 2501 yesterday and I was no longer able to boot from the ssd drive. Windows would start to load and then give me an error that no operating system was available. Tried everything I could to get Windows 10 to boot from the ssd drive with no luck (after the initial boot manager reached the point where the operating system should begin to load, all drive activity stopped)
4. Performed a System Restore saving all personal data because I could not see the system image I had created or access the original ssd partition the had original Windows 10 on it in a command prompt from within Windows RE (the drive did not exist).
5. Windows 10 now loads less all the programs I had installed.
6. When I attempt to restore the system image from advanced options in Windows 10 RE, it gets to the point of showing me available images for which there are none showing. I copied the image from the original hard drive to a USB hard drive and to a network location. Windows does not recognize the image in any of the locations.
I read in a thread somewhere that in Windows 10, the only way to restore a system with a windows system image was with the actual OS that created it. Since I did the Restore from the original system image from the recovery partition and not the one I had made the image with I am assuming that is why Windows is not showing any image to restore.
I have a custom built system:
Asus P97 Pro mobo
Intel i7-4790 3.6GHz
32 GB RAM
64 bit Windows 10
SSD - Crucial CT500MX200SSD4
Hard Drives x2 - Toshiba DT01ACA300
How to get Windows 10 to recognize the image. I am going to give it about another hour of research and then do a clean install.

I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 from 2011. Windows 10 is installed and working, Using it right now but with an external monitor. Found several posts about booting into a black screen but they seem to only be the case when there is a cursor floating round as well.
My problem is that when I boot up the laptop I get the windows 10 loading screen. Then it goes black and stays black. The screen is definitely on but not showing anything. And I've left it for an hour and nothing happens. But when I plug in a second monitor it works on there and seems to detect this second monitor as the only one. Once this monitor is attached, the laptop screen turns itself off and cannot be turned back on, not even to the state it was in before of just being black.
Checked and all drivers are up to date. If I change the settings, by hitting windows key and p, to extend the screen then i can drag the mouse from the second monitor into apparently nothing so I really can't tell if the computer knows about its own screen or not. Also sound is working through the laptop.

I recently re-installed Windows 10 on my Asus X205TA notebook using the ISO on a USB stick. It installed without a problem, but when I boot the computer now (first boot after installation), the OS does not recognise the keyboard and the mouse, so I cannot enter the required data to proceed to the next screen..
Seems like the required drivers are missing, and I am thinking a re-install may be necessary, but how to get the keyboard and mouse drivers included (inserted?) in the installation process?

I just installed Windows 10 upgrade to my HP laptop over Win 7. Every thing is fine but some thing strange happened.
All other WiFi connections in and around my apartment can be seen by Windows 10, except my WiFi network !! I can see a lot of SSDs in my area but can't see mine!
I can access my WiFi network from my desktop and my phone, but not from my HP laptop. Device Manager shows that my network adapter is Intel Centrino. There is, however, an exclamation mark over "Unknown Device" which needs a driver that Win 10 could not provide.

I have downloaded Win10 onto my laptop. The DVD is: UltraNote Series: 8x SATA DVD-R/RW/Dual Layer (+ 24x CD-RW)
I thought that everything was fine after I had re loaded Norton which had disappeared. All other icons and programmes were intact. I then attempted to load another program via a disc but found that win 10 doesn't know that the drive exists.
I am using my PC with win 7 to type this info.

For some unknown reason I am now receiving a black warning banner that pops in and out ever second or three appearing just above the clock telling me that the last USB device connected was not recognized by Windows. I should reconnect and try again or go on line a find a solution, or word to that effect.
This VERY frequent popping out banner and the associated sound drives me crazy and hide a very important part of the screen where other messages from the associated links appear.
I have opened Settings and turned off the Notification button and from the control panel under sounds removed the annoying sound......I did this after a test I tried by disconnecting all the USB cables including the mouse from the PC and then rebooting, but still the same results. I cannot identify to which USB the banner refers to.
My OS 10 is a Win 7upgrade and up until now, for the past 6 months this problem has not existed.
Just as a point in passing, this problem made it's self know just after a momentary power outage. My PC turned off but I have it set so that I have to manually reboot.
I have had power outages before without any problem. In one occasion I even had a lightening strike somewhere down the line as it blew the fuse-box breaker out necessitating a replacement purchase.
Just as a point, when I swap my Win OS 10 HD from the caddie and replace it with my Win 7 OS, there is no problem at all.
I have tried several Restores to different dates to no effect.
Now here is the bad part. I actually Ghosted this Win 10 HD back to the beginning of November last year when I know I never had this problem, and yet there it is.
