File Explorer Working Intermittently?
Aug 3, 2015
I upgraded to W10 on the 31st July and all well apart from intermittent stoppages in File Explorer.
There have been 4 stoppages over this period and an identical one at boot up this morning.
It is reported in Reliability Monitor although I have neither seen or experienced any problem in running File Explorer.
Reliability Monitor gives no error details and auto reports have been sent to Microsoft. I did do a restart in Task Manager yesterday but it occurred again this morning. However in Event Viewer I saw the following for this morning stoppage:
Explorer.EXE 10.0.10240.16405 55b4596f unknown 0.0.0.0 00000000 c0000005 00007fff3887000a acc 01d0cda6fd541180 C:WINDOWSExplorer.EXE unknown d2da1227-2059-41f4-b45b-8aa3ece9af18

I have three machines with Win10 Pro. Two behaving quite well, however one machine ABit IP35 Pro, 256 SSD, 1 TB hard drive, Nvidia 750 ti, 8 GB ram just intermittently just hangs up during operation. This is a very fast machine with a quad Intel Processor. This machine ran perfectly with all of same hardware on Win7 Pro. You can just move the cursor to send an email and we get the little blue circle and the machine is hung. It is not program dependant! Same thing can happen working in any browser.

Recently, I have observed the Search feature of the File Explorer does not work (e.g., No items match your search). The folders I'm searching are indexed. I've tried rebuilding the index. I can even drill down to a folder I know contains the sought file and entering a search word in the file's name and search returns nothing.
For example, D:UsersClayton is indexed with no exclusions (all subdirectories included). I can search from D:UsersClaytonBooks for 'code'. That folder has many subfolders with files containing 'code' in the filename/contents. Yet search returns nothing.
D:UsersClaytonBooks is shared to my HomeGroup. I thought perhaps that might be a factor. However, even if I stop sharing, the results are the same. Most of my existing shared folders exhibit this behavior. However, if I add a folder to my Homegroup, search seems to work.
I just don't get it. I have successfully performed searches like this in Windows 7 all the time. Is Windows 10 just broken?
UPDATE: From my laptop (also Win10), I can search the Books HomeGroup share and find matches. However, going back to the desktop machine where the share resides, the same search fails.
UPDATE 2: On my desktop, if I remove D:UsersClayton from my indexed locations, searches work. This is repeatable. When indexed, search fails. When not indexed, search works.

When I click on the Folder on the taskbar the only thing that happens is that the desktop goes off and right back on. It works in the Start Menu just fine. When I left click and drag the icon, it just show a list of the programs that are pinned to the taskbar.

Recently I posted a thread about control panel not working. Finally got it started by opening in file explorer. Once it started there it would open from any of the usual places. My problem now is that File Explorer is doing the same thing control panel was doing. Can't seem to start it from anywhere. I just get the "wait" circle for a second and then nothing.

The file explorer stopped working. I tried to start the sfc /scannow utility, however the dos cmd prompt for admin does not come up. I tried a regular dos command, but apparently does not have admin privileges. My computer account has admin privileges.

My desktop will no longer come up upon startup, it's just the blank wallpaper with no folders or shortcuts.
Sometimes it will reappear, and the Desktop setting Automatic Arrangement is checked, with all my files out of place.Another problem, the computer will not shut down. If I start a shutdown the screen goes blue and displays "Shutting Down" perpetually. I let it attempt to shut down all day and all night and there was still no change. (I have to flick the switch attached to the power supply at the back in order for it to turn off, I cringe every time) The start menu also doesn't work properly either, anytime I click the My Stuff tab on the search the start menu and taskbar freeze.
In the file explorer, when I right click on any file/folder windows explorer freezes.I have avast antivirus so I have done uncountable virus scans and it continues to say that malware isn't present
A friend of mine told me that upgrading to windows ten makes it way buggier than a fresh install, so I've tried many times to perform a backup(That way I could clear the hard drive, fresh install w10, and still have my files stored somewhere) but Windows backups nor file explorer will recognize my extra hard drive. I just tried to use Avast to make a rescue disc with my 500gb flash drive and it froze... like I literally just tried that while writing this and the application isn't responding... Neither will windows media creator work when i try to turn my flash drive into a bootable disc.
(P.S: I tried disabling smart shutdown in the power settings, it's already disabled and doesn't work either way)

When trying to copy and paste a file from File Explorer (or Desktop), my "Paste" operations remains disabled. As if the copy operation never actually copied the file. I also noticed that when I select "Cut" (file/icon becomes somewhat transparent), then moment I right click on the location where I would like to paste, the file/icon that the transparency stops, and once again the "Paste" function is not available.
The same goes for Ctrl+X/Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. This also does not work.
When I boot into safe mode the operation works however, and intermittently in "normal" mode the operation does work. It seems as if some service/driver/thing stops the functionality.

I have a quite good PC (i7, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA Quadro K600 graphics and on-board Intel HD Graphics 4600, newest drivers). I used 1920x1200 monitor without any issues. Now I have UHD monitor (DELL P2715Q) which works perfect but I have one strange issue - File Explorer stopped working. When I try to start File Explorer nothing happens for few seconds (PC's fans work louder for a while) and then Windows Explorer restarts. And that's all. It's the same on both graphic cards. New monitor is connected via DisplayPort, for old one I used DVI connection.
When I connect my old monitor File Explorer works as usual (without restarting the PC, just switching monitors).

Under the Network tab of File Explorer, I can see three entries, one of which is my router (with attached Hard Drive) and two computers, each running Windows 10. When I expand the router entry, I can see my hard drive files. I can also see my Users icons when I expand one of the computer's tabs. However, when I click on the other computer's name to search for users, all I see is a message that "This folder is empty". In fact, the folder is not empty, as there are two users on the computer. How I can get this computer to show users, etc.?

Using Win10 Pro x64. I would like to disable windows showing .zip files in explorer as a folder...When you highlight it the contents inside the .zip are shown in the right pane view. I've scoured the net and found ways for Win7(which I did disable .zip folders on my other Win7 machine) and Vista, perhaps 8 too but I don't want to risk trying a method for older versions of windows. Any solution/reg hack or whatever to disable .zip folder?

I just installed Windows 10. Not sure if I like it, but I'm trying hard.
Problem: When I go to File Explorer, in the left panel, when I click on a folder name, the contents of that folder (both sub-folders and files) show in the right panel.
In the left panel, when I click on ">" beside a folder name, it will expand in the left panel showing the sub-folders, but not "loose files".
I could have sworn that in earlier versions of Windows the files also showed.
Is there a option setting somewhere to change this behavior and to show the files also in the left panel?

When I edit a .mkv file (rename, delete or copy/move) on one of my partitions, file explorer freezes and I need to restart it with taskmanager.
I haven't encountered any other files that cause the same freeze as this one (yet..).
I already searched on google and tried editing from a webbrowser and the drive is defragmented automatically, so I don't know what to do.

I can set an alias in the hosts file on a win7 machine and access it just fine but doing the same in Win10 prompts for creds that never work even when entered correctly. What did win10 change?
hosts file entry:
127.0.0.1 hostname alias
ip - works fine
hostname -works fine
alias - Prompts for creds and creds don't work
I have gone to the extent of fully disabling UAC from reg, same outcome. Network and file sharing is set to password access and not homegroup. Simple file sharing is off.
Something to note. I always disable ipv6 form the adapter but when I ping my hostname it shows the ipv6 loopback. Why is that? When I ping the alias it returns 127.0.0.1 ipv4 loopback that was entered in the hostname.

My power scheme is set to lock the screen after 4 minutes, turn display off after 5, sleep (S3) after 10 (hybrid sleep disabled). Auto-sleep usually works a few times after reboot, but then fails: no screen lock, no display off, no sleep. No new apps have been launched in the meantime. Then, perhaps an hour later, auto-sleep starts to work again for a few times, then fails again. (Manually suspending or resuming the PC always works properly.)
Powercfg /requests consistently lists nothing in any category. Powercfg /lastwake just shows the keyboard activity that I used to wake the computer from its last sleep. The network adapter's wake-this-computer box is deselected in the device manager. Media streaming is not enabled. There is no homegroup. Dism scanhealth and checkhealth show no errors. Checking the system drive and all data drive shows no errors.
I've tried restoring the default power settings for all plans, then reestablishing my own settings, but the problem persists.
Manually putting the PC to sleep is not a viable workaround, in part because the PC wakes for some scheduled tasks (especially overnight) and needs to go back to sleep (which it isn't doing).
Latest updates, drivers, and BIOS are all installed. Motherboard is ASRock Z77 Extreme4.
There are tools to show what keeps a PC from sleeping when idle (powercfg /request), and to show what wakes an idle PC (powercfg /lastwake). But are there any tools to show what keeps an idle PC from being recognized as idle?

Roughly every hour I get a Cmd window popup that lasts a couple tenths of a second. Some text appears line after line in the window and, as I said, it vanishes. I checked the event log right after the last one and found a appropriately time stamped event in the Security log. Here is the data from the log.
A security-enabled local group membership was enumerated.

In Windows 7 when I open Windows Explorer it comes up with a very simple window that has very basic tabs, Organise, Share With Burn, New Folder. Organise then has a very basic drop down menu.
When I use File Explorer in Windows 10 it comes up with a much more detailed menu that offers four menus, File, Home, Share, View.
Is there any way I can use a window similar to Windows 7? I'm sure it is there somewhere as when you attempt to open a file in an application a window identical to what I want comes up to allow the selection.

After months of ignoring your apps for upgrading to Windows 10. I finally said ok and download it to my computer. Now it keeps shutting down intermittently. Even when I am doing important work it shuts down right in the middle. It also keeps telling me that 70% of my drivers are outdated.

I've never had this message appear on Windows 8 and I did go and disable anything I felt I wasn't using sufficiently. But my Windows 10 is freezing intermittently and I'm getting a message about low memory.
What gives? I have 4GB RAM and that's all my PC will hold, unfortunately. Is Windows 10 gobbling up memory?

I've had an ongoing problem since upgrading to Windows 10. And I'd like to stress that I never had this problem on Windows 7, only on Windows 10. Basically, my left mouse button works fine, but my right mouse button works only intermittently. This is very noticeable in while gaming, in particular with Skyrim, where when I hold down the RMB it seems to stutter or start and restart. I also have the issue with having to right click multiple times in programs like Microsoft Word to bring up the context menu and when right clicking on the desktop I get the near endless loading pointer.
Troubleshooting steps I've taken are listed below:
Related Hardware:
-Windows 10
-Razer Naga Epic
Things I've Tried
-Restarting computer
-Uninstalling/reinstalling mouse drivers
-Deep antivirus scan
-Restarting Windows Explorer

After upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, my file explorer simply keeps crashing when navigating in folders.
Example: I go to "This PC" and the window that pops up show all my drives but not how much storage they have/have left. When I try open a drive or folder the window and taskbar closes down and reopen after a few seconds. I haven't had this problem even a single time before I upgraded to Windows 10 but now it happens almost every time I try open a folder.

This is the second time I have posted about the same problem. I can't move file explorer to the task bar. I tried to move it by right clicking on start, then left click on file explorer the menu I get that way just says "pin to start" and more, when I click on more all that is there is don't show with this list, if I left click the start button and then left click file explorer the menu only says "pin to start". I am at a loss, I have had one problem after another with Windows 10 and considering going back to Windows 7. I have tried to revert back to windows 7 from windows 10 but that failed, the only other option I have is to format the hard drive and reload Windows 7. I understand by doing that I will get the Windows 10 10 upgrade icon in the right hand corner of the task bar. How do I get rid of that?

What I don't understand is why with administrator rights, I can't access or delete files or even save files to the Windows folder.
I also don't have the option if I right click to run File Explorer with Administrator rights.
If I Right Click on another Application I get to run as Administrator
Here are File Explorer properties; as you can see the olption to run as Administrator is grayed out

As the title says I am unable to "see" my NAS in windows explorer. I was able to use explorer to view/add/delete files on my NAS a few weeks ago but now now cannot even see the NAS in the network section. Funny thing is that I am able to ping the server and even login to the GUI via IE and firefox. But i can't get the media files.
I am currently running the evaluation copy of Windows 10: Details:
- Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview
- version 1511
- OS build 10565.41737
- 64Bit
- Intel i&-2600 CPU with 24GB of RAM
I have tried the follow to correct the issue with no success:
- Rebooted windows 10 machine (several times)
- Rebooted Router (Actiontec V2000H)
- Rebooted NAS (FreeNAS 9.3)
- ipconfig /flushdns
- change from using PIN to password
- Change from password to PIN
- using regedit added the AllowInsecureGuestAuth = 1 to the registry.
Notes on NAS: using Freenas 9.3, ZFS volume, enabled CIFS shares. do not require login to access media files (or any files). The server only has media files on it so no password required or enabled.
Notes on Network:
- The network is hardwired with Cat 5e cable (except for wireless printer)
- Windows 10 explorer is able to "see" other windows machines (windows 7 and 8), an Linus Ubuntu 14.04 machine, router (Actiontec V2000H, printer (wireless), AV receiver,
- the windows 7/8 machines are able to access the media files on the NAS with no issues and are able to see the windows 10 machine.
- the ubuntu 14.04 machine is able to access the media files on the NAS with no issues and is able to see the windows 10//8/7 machines on the network.
I like windows 10 but it will be a show stopper if I cannot access my NAS from this Windows 10 machine.
