View 3 RepliesOn my desktop computer, when I click on a .ods file in File Explorer, the splash screen for Open Office shows briefly but the file is not opened. Most other associations seem fine. If I check the association for an .ods file it shows Open Office Calc.
I would post this in an Open Office forum except I also have it on my laptop configured the same and the laptop opens .ods files fine.
Both computers are running the current verrsion of Windows 10. I feel like I may have a service turned off on my desktop but have been unable to find it.
I do not know what happened, but I lost some file associations, such as opening .torrent files and magnetic links with utorrent and text files (.ini, .txt etc.) with Notepad++. Additionally, Start Menu and tray options, such as volume slider and wi-fi menu are not opening anymore. Settings starts, though. I already tried to apply that CSSEmerg67758.diagcab fix, but it didn't work. I can't perform a system restore as well, I get this error: ....
View 6 RepliesMy PC updated Windows 10 yesterday afternoon ("Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3135173)". After rebooting, it completely screwed all my custom file associations (mostly for media files: photos, audio, and video).
A few minutes after the reboot, the Action Center started firing popups at me, one after the other, every few seconds:
"An app default was reset. An app caused a problem with the default setting for .avi files so it was reset to Films & TV."
with a different file extension for each popup (avi, bmp, mp4, and so on) . Even .pdf files were changed from Adobe Reader to Microsoft Edge. As well, all my custom context menu items for these same file types were also deleted. I spent a lot of time setting these associations up and now they were all obliterated. I'd backed them all up in a .reg file but running it didn't do anything. So with a heavy (and angry) sigh I started manually changing the associations back to the way I had them. However, each time I finished making a change within seconds the Action Center would fire the same message as before at me for the file type I'd just changed and it would be reset back to the MS default again.
Finally in exasperation, I just used System Restore to go back before the updates and that solved the problem. Now, the Action Center keeps nagging me to set a time to reinstall this same update. I know I can't block it indefinitely, and there are probably important security patches in it I should have. So the question is: How can I stop it from f'ing up my file associations again?
Every time I reboot, the file associations for images (jpg/png), media (mp3/wav/mp4/mkv) revert back to the default Microsoft apps. I prefer to use VLC for videos, Winamp for audio and Irfanview for images, and it's getting really annoying having to set all my file associations every time I boot up. This never happened on Win7 or 8.
View 9 RepliesI want 'List', not 'Details'.
I could keep it at 'List' view in Windows 7, but I don't see a setting for that option any more?
Also, I downloaded a program called Explorer Plus Plus, which I love. Is there any way in Windows 10 to make IT my default Folder opener?
In W7 I could refresh the file list after deleting files using the view menu and the refresh option. W10 does not remove deleted files from view at once nor does it have a way of doing it manually that I can find. I can't believe it no longer exists.
View 1 RepliesMy brother upgraded to win 10 then had great problems with drivers which I am trying to sort out for him but at the moment he has rolled back to win 7. The only problem he has now is that he can't download pictures from his camera either by connecting via usb cable or putting the sd card in a slot on his laptop. We can view them but not copy, paste or download them to the computer. we have re-installed the programme that came with the camera which always worked fine with Win 7 before. All we are getting every time we try to transfer the images no matter what method we use is a pop up saying you do not have permission to do this action. he is logged in as an administrator. I have tried logging in as a user, logging as a different adminstrator but am now running out of options ....

View 3 RepliesOne productivity feature I really miss from OS X is the column view in Finder. It can be a real headache to parse through root and subfolders in File Explorer without being able to see your path clearly. There are third-party programs such as UltraExplorer that allow this functionality. Is there any word of Microsoft providing a native solution in future builds?
View 1 RepliesAt the first after I upgraded my notebook from windows 8 to windows 10, I just realize that 1 of my 3 user account is not exist anymore (the Guest account is not there just after I upgrade it into windows 10). As I tried to make the new Guest account and still didnt work (I dont want to follow such a complex email registration required by windows 10 to make a new user account), I thought to delete my secondary user account. However, I just realize that there is a file that I saved in the Desktop under my secondary user account. Is there a way to restore this desktop file that is saved in my deleted user account?
I have opened C:Users but I cant find the folder with the name of my deleted user account. It's very important yet big file (around 2 GB).
I can set an alias in the hosts file on a win7 machine and access it just fine but doing the same in Win10 prompts for creds that never work even when entered correctly. What did win10 change?
hosts file entry:
127.0.0.1 hostname alias
ip - works fine
hostname -works fine
alias - Prompts for creds and creds don't work
I have gone to the extent of fully disabling UAC from reg, same outcome. Network and file sharing is set to password access and not homegroup. Simple file sharing is off.
Something to note. I always disable ipv6 form the adapter but when I ping my hostname it shows the ipv6 loopback. Why is that? When I ping the alias it returns 127.0.0.1 ipv4 loopback that was entered in the hostname.
Under the Network tab of File Explorer, I can see three entries, one of which is my router (with attached Hard Drive) and two computers, each running Windows 10. When I expand the router entry, I can see my hard drive files. I can also see my Users icons when I expand one of the computer's tabs. However, when I click on the other computer's name to search for users, all I see is a message that "This folder is empty". In fact, the folder is not empty, as there are two users on the computer. How I can get this computer to show users, etc.?
View 6 RepliesI'm trying to copy a ripped movie file (iso) from my G drive to desktop. The file is 45GB. It gets to 99% then a message comes up saying the process can't complete because the System has the file open. I have nothing running and can't find anything where the System is accessing/linking to this file.
I thought it might be a permissions issue, so I wanted to download the Reg edit to add a "take ownership" command but the TenFourms link is not working. Take Ownership - Add to Context Menu in Windows 10 <<<< won't open web page.
I ran sfc /scannow and there are some errors reported that could not be fixed. There is a CBS.log file but I have not looked at it yet.
I also ran the DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (I forget the full command line now) and it came back saying it could not find the files "online".
Using Win10 Pro x64. I would like to disable windows showing .zip files in explorer as a folder...When you highlight it the contents inside the .zip are shown in the right pane view. I've scoured the net and found ways for Win7(which I did disable .zip folders on my other Win7 machine) and Vista, perhaps 8 too but I don't want to risk trying a method for older versions of windows. Any solution/reg hack or whatever to disable .zip folder?
View 5 RepliesI just installed Windows 10. Not sure if I like it, but I'm trying hard.
Problem: When I go to File Explorer, in the left panel, when I click on a folder name, the contents of that folder (both sub-folders and files) show in the right panel.
In the left panel, when I click on ">" beside a folder name, it will expand in the left panel showing the sub-folders, but not "loose files".
I could have sworn that in earlier versions of Windows the files also showed.
Is there a option setting somewhere to change this behavior and to show the files also in the left panel?
I use Notepad++ to edit Python files which have the file extension .py such as "sample.py"
I would like to set Notepad++ as the default program to open .py files.
When I open a .py file I get the popup asking me which file I want to use to open. But I do not get the choice to set the default program to open this extension.
When I go to Settings|Choose Default Apps By File Type the .py extension is not listed.
Looking through the registry I see that there is no .py handler.
Q: What is the method to manually add a file extension and associate it with a program?
When I edit a .mkv file (rename, delete or copy/move) on one of my partitions, file explorer freezes and I need to restart it with taskmanager.
I haven't encountered any other files that cause the same freeze as this one (yet..).
I already searched on google and tried editing from a webbrowser and the drive is defragmented automatically, so I don't know what to do.
I can't open some of the PDF ffiles on my client's server. an error message come on stating that the ' file name is too long'. I can open other files with short name without any problem. I have tried to copy and paste the file on my desktop so I can rename the file but without success. Also tried to right click on the file and open it with fox-it or MS PDF reader but this did't work either. if tried to rename the file or open it with another software the page goes simply closed and and desktop opened.
View 4 RepliesIt seems windows keeps deleting random files, uninstalls programs , resets file associations...
In the past few weeks I have had stuff just dispear from my computer everything from important documents to programs being uninstalled without permission Shortcuts and file association...
I have done several scans for virus, malware and general crapware using Sybot S&D AdAware, Avast!, Avira, Norton, McAffee, MalwareBytes, and they all come up clean for that crap....
Windows 10 is a very nice OS... But it sure has some annoying stuff... Well at least on my machine... Maybe I have a Registry setting that is set wrong... Here is what is happening...
I use a lot of txt files... But this is really ticking me off... I did not want to use the word I was thinking about...
I search for a fiIe, I find it, I click on it then and get the"What do you want to open this file" window, I pick notepad and open it, get what I need and close it...
A minute later I need to open the same file again and I click on it and the "What do you want to open this file" window opens again... Windows 10 can't remember what I used to open the file a minute earlier...
I made the txt file with notepad to begin with you would think it would know to open a file with the program that made it... If I want to open it with something else I would right click on the file and click "open with"...
But windows 10 gives you the same window when you double click the txt file or right click and click open with... I don't remember windows xp or 7 doing this...
When I boot up, reboot, Windows Notepad opens automatically with an error box "! Access Denied" - when I ok that it leaves a Notepad blank screen open. I close that and boot up is complete and I can work normally.
Cannot see anything in startup.
Since upgrading to Win 10, I have a couple of issues. Note Pad...it fills the entire screen and it won't resize. Whole screen or minimized....that's the extent of Note Pad. The calculator is the same...full screen only. I worked around that by downloading the win 7 calculator.

I hate Windows feature that enforces installing localized software - e.g. I live in Poland so if I set my location as "Poland" many apps will be installed with Polish interface, which I don't want to.
Therefore I've installed my OS in en-US version and left US as my location. Now it's all nice in terms of apps interface, as it's always English. Most programs cause no problems with one exception - Notepad...
Whenever I open a txt file with Polish national characters, I see "bushes" instead of them. I tried to open them as UFT-8 encoded, but it hasn't worked. I've changed Notepad default font into CE encoding - no effect.
I tend to believe the default Notepad encoding is set to westerns somewhere, but I can't figure where to look for the appropriate setting - how to change it, so txt files displayed correctly?
Have Auto correct spelling set to Highlight and it does nothing in notepad?
