Freezing / Locking Up Laptop When Idle
Sep 18, 2015
When I have my webcam security software running all day (12-hours), the laptop runs fine. But when I shut the software down and then leave the laptop idle, it locks up.
It also happens when I start the laptop up and just leave it sit idle. So far, there's no specific amount of time where the laptop will lock up. Sometimes it's been within 30 minutes or it could be several hours (maybe update is running). But it freezes every single day when just sitting idle.
This isn't the kind of lockup other people are reporting where they're still able to move the cursor, etc. I'm talking complete lockup. Time, mouse, keyboard. The entire screen is completely froze and the only thing that resolves it is a restart.
I have this laptop:
Amazon.com : Dell Inspiron 11.6-Inch 2 in 1 Convertible Touchscreen Laptop, i3147-3750sLV : Computers Accessories
I've checked my power options and I'm running in performance mode with everything disabled. That means nothing is slowed down or shut down while the laptop is running.
I've also checked every event in Event Viewer and there's nothing anywhere in there that would point to a possible cause.

This has been going on for months, I've even reinstalled Windows 10 a couple of times, the the issue still persists.
Windows 10 64 bit, Radeon HD 7970 Ghz Ed 6gb x2 [crossfire is usually disabled and makes no difference either way], i7 3770, nothing is overclocked, all power settings are disabled and should never sleep or shut down, I'm using a wired internet connection and all wireless is already disabled, I have a SSD that is set to not power down ever, and all HW monitors [CPUz, Open Hardware Monitor, Sapphire Trixx, HWinfo] show everything is running well within acceptable temps and running smoothly with no spikes or issues.
Windows 10 keeps freezing hard on me, but only if I leave it alone for a few minutes. This happens without fail every time I leave the PC alone for more than 10-15 minutes or so.
It will run fine for days, as long as I'm right in front of it and actively doing something on it, playing a game, watching a video, browsing the internet, whatever. As long as there's some kind of active input, it works fine and doesn't freeze.
I step away for a few minutes, and it freezes hard. No input works, not the mouse, not ctrl-alt-del, nothing. I have to hard reset the stupid thing. I go make something to eat and leave the PC running, take the dog out, or go to the bathroom and I come back to a locked up hard frozen PC every time. It never happens when I'm sitting right in front of it and using it, only when I step away for a few minutes to do something and don't make it back within a few minutes.
I've tried all sorts of fixes. Nothing is overclocked, and my GPU driver has had several new versions while this has been going on. This has been a persistent problem for months and I've spent quite a few hours over that time trying to find a fix. I've seen various threads that refer to this issue, and some of them claim to have fixed it, but none of the solutions work for me. Sometimes it'll get better for a short time, the freezes will be less frequent or take a slightly longer time to hit me, but eventually it just goes right back to this behavior again without fail.
I've adjusted all the power settings several different ways, including setting it so everything never shuts down, made sure the HDD is set to not shut down, clean booted with only the essential bare bones Windows programs running at Startup, checked and rechecked every disk using command prompt commands, run in safe mode, scanned for viruses, malware, and adware repeatedly, disabled the wireless card, unplugged every piece of extra hardware, tried several different keyboards and mice, adjusted the Bios settings in various ways having to do with power and the HDD, uninstalled and reinstalled every driver, rolled them back, used administrator privileges to disable and enable various things, disabled and enabled my AV and firewall, uninstalled my AV, reinstalled it again, adjusted every startup option and tweaked the task manager all sorts of different ways, isolated my PC away from the network and internet, my page file is set up properly for a SSD and I've tweaked it several different ways, nothing works.
It still freezes if I step away from it for more than a few minutes no matter what I do, but only if I step away. I can also prevent it from doing so by playing a video and letting it run while I'm away.
If I pause a game or leave one running while I step away from the PC, it freezes as well. Only video seems to prevent it from crashing like this for some reason, Youtube or a video player running an MP4 or MKV file will keep the PC running if I have something playing and step away, but that's the only reliable way I've found to keep it from locking up.
I shouldn't have to do that though, and I inevitably forget and come back to a frozen PC often losing posts, progress, and it's super annoying. I can't figure out what the hell the issue is despite months of on again off again troubleshooting. Playing with the power settings made it get better briefly, but it never fixed the issue and the PC eventually went right back to behaving the same way regardless of how I set my power settings.
This has been going on for months, so it's not hardware failure. If that had been the issue, whatever it was would have long since died. Everything runs perfectly fine while I'm actively using the PC as well.
Near as I can tell, Windows 10 is ignoring some sort of power setting and trying to go into some sort of sleep mode or something even though I have it set to never do that, and it's causing a hard freeze. That's my best guess here given that it only ever happens when the PC is idle and I'm away from it.
I am currently using an older version of CCC for my GPU, but I am aware of it. I have an Oculus Rift DK2 and the latest drivers do not work with it. They are intentionally rolled back currently and I have already tried the newest drivers. They don't change anything and the PC still freezes if left alone even with the newest Crimson Drivers from AMD.
This is super frustrating and I'm at a bit of a loss here about what to do. Nothing has worked, not even a clean install of Windows 10 with everything wiped from the drive. It persists and refuses to stay running if left idle too long no matter what I do. My PC works, but I can't leave it to download anything over a long period of time or pause a game to go do something.
DXdiag attached ....

I recently upgraded to win 10. I found 2 which are related to when you close the lid of your laptop.
1. If you close the lid when the laptop is unlocked, and then open it up again after it has went to sleep, it will not lock the laptop but re show whatever you were doing.
2. If you close the lid when it is locked, it goes into a deep sleep. This sometimes causes me to press the power button so that it wakes up but then it reboots itself I think and shows the lock screen again.

I've had a problem on my laptop.
When I'm reading pdf files using adobe reader, the screen locks itself after 3 minutes as it is supposed to when I'm not using the pc. But I am using the pc and I'm scrolling through the pdf file using the touchpad and yet the screen still locks itself after 3 minutes. This doesn't happen if I'm watching a video or working with documents
Laptop running windows 10, build 10586 November official release. Problem existed before 10586.

I've just upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. I have an HP Pavilion 15 Notebook PC. This happened twice: when I left my laptop and came back after an hour or so, the screen was black (as usually), but the laptop was completely unresponsive. I couldn't wake it up neither by moving/clicking my mouse nor by hitting any key on the keyboard (both external and embedded mice/keyboards). Furthermore, the LED of my laptop on/off h/w switch button was constantly on, instead of blinking.

My laptop keeps freezing and nothing responds. I start task manager and nothing is running it reports! I can't even power off except fordoing ctrl alt delete and restart it. It's becoming an everyday occurrence. I am thinking in going back to windows 7. I wish Microsoft would have used 7 as a model to make another OS. In my opinion 7 is the best OS that Windows has made since XP. Is there anything I can do before I do a full reinstall? Can I use an Acronis image of my old c drive on my old laptop? I think it's a definite no, but I won't know until I ask.

Yesterday my laptop running windows 10 started freezing randomly. Everything seems to be normal when suddenly computer doesn't react any more for few minutes, then works perfectly well again. It's quite hard to find the cause. Only thing I have noticed that when it freezes, disk usage is very high. Could this be my cramped desktop (basically no space left) ? I haven't installed or downloaded any torrents lately. This week my laptop was mainly used for heavy browsing and projecting continuosly for hours, some powerpoint and audiocity usage. Also my windows partition is low on space (20GB left).

I have a new laptop (came with Windows 10 Pro installed). I have installed Office 2010 and everything is working fine except for Access. When I attempt to filer by pressing just a letter to get to the names starting with "C" (for example), Access locks up and never responds. I have to shut down the program. This worked fine in Windows 7 and Windows 8.

I recently installed a new motherboard, cpu and ram and evert since then i have been getting some very strange lock ups. They never happen when i am using the PC. It will only lock up after i have left it on overnight. When i wake up the screen is frozen and the keyboard and mouse are non responsive. I have ran extensive tests on the new ram/cpu and i have yet to find an error or cause a crash from stress testing. I have also stressed the GPU and still no crashing. I have went through the even/reliability logs and they dont really seem to have anything showing up at the time of the crash. I guess the nice thing about this crash is since the screen freezes the clock gives me a nice time stamp of when it happened. software that can monitor crashes.

I have a Dell XPS435 (about 5 years old, I think) that is acting up. Sometimes on boot up,it will just freeze, forcing me to hard-boot. Lately, it just won't even boot up and if it does, it will just shut down sometime shortly thereafter (30 mins or so). I'm looking at speccy specs right now and the temp is pretty high, but I don't know what the median temp is (never had to before now ) I'm guessing the fan is going out?
the system specs are below:
Operating System
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67GHz144 °F
Bloomfield 45nm Technology
RAM 8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 531MHz (7-7-7-20)

I attempted an install of Win10 when I first got the go-ahead several weeks ago, it went through the entire install (which took an eternity) and then decided it was incompatible as windows updater encountered errors, it reverted back to 7. Last week I tried again and the pre-install launcher came up with an obscure windows update error, which fixed after downloading and installing the auto-tool for windows updater, but then came up with yet another different error with winupdate.
I restarted, Rand the tool again, and although the window still showed a red X and the same second error , it allowed me to click "retry" which then just force launched the windows 10 migration. I figured might as well, didn't prompt me with any warnings about the potential error so anyways long story short after going ahead, it now freezes on the new logo immediately when it tries to boot the OS, after a couple turns of the progress wheel. Don't know where to go from here and it doesn't seem to be reading any peripherals. Have disconnected and reconnected power and had to force shut down nearly half a dozen times.

I have searched and can't seem to find anything on the subject, but I have I user that occasionally locks his screen late at night (at home) with programs open (word, excel). When he checks his computer the next morning, many of the apps will have closed. No error messages are displayed, it does not appear to have restarted, and reliability doesn't indicate any issues. He is running Win 10 Education on a Lenovo Helix 2 with office 2016 installed, I can dig up his build info if needed.

I've been working on my new computer. I really enjoyed picking out the parts and putting it together, but I'm not enjoying the enormous amount of troubleshooting I'm having to do.I installed Windows 10 on my PC. It froze on set-up, so I reinstalled it. I was then able to use it for a short amount of time and then it froze again. I decided to totally format the drive and reinstall it yet again, and after several attempts (it froze during the set up process several times) I was able to get it installed. Yet, it still freezes.
Normally Windows 10 would freeze in the first few minutes of use, but when I boot Windows 10 through safe mode, it doesn't seem to freeze. My guess is that some kind of software issue is causing this (drivers?) - but I don't know.(Let me clarify that I am able to boot into and use the BIOS just fine. I don't think it's a hardware issue, but I could be wrong.) Is there something that I could do to prevent this from happening? I don't have my drivers installed yet. I also noticed a few errors in the device manger. I'll list them below:
Device Manager > Other Devices
*Base System Device
*PCI DATA Aquisition and Signical Processing Controller
*PCI DATA Aquisition and Signical Processing Controller
*PCI Memory Controller
*PCI Simple Communications Controller
*SM Bus Controller
*Unknown device
They have a yellow triangle next to them. Could my freezing problem be related to this?

When I lock windows (win + L) and relog back on any application I had running when I locked the account will be muted (browsers aren't affected). The application doesn't appear in windows volume mixer and the only way ive found to get my sound back is to restart the application.
For example, I`m playing fallout 4 I need to leave my computer so I lock it (for a variety of reasons) then I return a minute later and my sound is gone. The only way to get it back is to restart the game. This is pretty annoying for me because I have to somewhat frequently lock my windows while I`m doing things.

My computer has been locking up recently. It seems fine until I start to put strain onto the system. This is usually done by me playing games. At first I thought it was heat and noticed my processor getting up there in temp. I went out and bought a new case and a new liquid cooling system (Something that needed to be done anyway). As I monitored over the next few days the freezing didn't stop, but my temperatures were a lot better. I did a complete reinstall of windows onto my HDD's to make sure it wasn't a driver. I did HDD's checks and nothing showed up. My next step was checking the ram. After running for 8 hours on each stick, then together, nothing showed up as an issue. I pulled out each piece to test everything, but like I said it only happens when I seem to put strain on the system. I tested both my graphics cards and I thought one was causing the issue, but it freezes on both. At this point I am at a lose as to what it could be. My thought is it might be the motherboard, but I am not sure. So I ask to you all, why is my computer locking up?
My system specs :
Motherboard- Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
Processor - AMD 9590
Ram- Corsair Vengeance 8GB x 2
GPU - AMD R9 290x x2
Power Supply - Rosewill Lightening 1300w
Liquid CPU Cooler - Corsair Hydro H100i GTX
HDD- Wester Digital 1TB
Wester Digital 2TB
SDD- Sandisk 120GB
Case- Cooler Master HAF X
Wireless Card - TP link WDN4800
More about : computer locking wrong
I looked in my event viewer and am seeing a lot of errors.

My computer has been having a problem with locking up randomly. Hard reset is the only way to recover. I ran stress test on CPU, GPU, memory checker, Sea gate tools was never able to recreate the problem or find any issues with any hardware. I also swapped out video cards and still had the same issue. I also monitored temperatures and never had it get hot. But if i reboot into safe mode with networking windows never locks up.

Why Windows 10 use 1gb of ram at idle (32bit)? Can I turn of something? Thats too much. Windows 8.1 used below 500mb.
Also my part of the screen on the left is black. I have radeon 4650, windows found drivers but probably I will need drivers from radeon but on the web there isnt for windows 10 yet, only 8. Should I use them?

This is not an issue but more a curiosity. I have the old Windows cup / ram monitor running as a gadget on Windows 10. When the PC is idle for a few minutes I notice the cup usage always spikes to around 10-13% and stays around that mark. As soon as I touch mouse and move it it then plummets to 0 or 1%. Is this normal? I wonder what it could be doing. It's not as if I can use task manager to see because as soon as I move the mouse or go to use the PC the usage returns to 0 or 1? I presume Windows is doing housekeeping stuff and it's a non issue?

I've just upgraded my win 7 installation to win 10. The power and sleep setting was carried over, turn off screen after 5 minutes, but the monitors stay on forever. I checked the network adapters in the device manager (BT personal area network, BT RFCOMM, Realtek PCIe GBE family controller) but none of them had power options or anything related to waking up the computer.

After leaving my computer alone for a few minutes my computer restarts with a REGISTRY_ERROR BSOD. I have disabled ".NET Framework NGEN v4.0.30319 Critical" and ".NET Framework NGEN v4.0.30319 64 Critical" and also ran sfc/scannow with no integrity violation. I uninstalled and reinstalled my graphics drivers and also reseated the card.

This is a machine I built from scratch about six months ago. Upgraded to Windows 10 about two months ago. I keep getting very random crashes, sometimes once a week, some times more. Yesterday it happened twice.
It seems to only happen when the computer is unattended for a while. I'll have it on overnight and in the morning I have a black screen, sometimes with only the mouse cursor present.
As kind of a side issue, when turn it off then reboot, I have to hit F2 to get into the ASUS BIOS. Somehow the BIOS seems to change on it's own and drops the Patriot Blaze SSD from the boot path, so I have to hit F8, highlight Patriot Blaze, then it boots normally. In the past, I thought I fixed this boot issue by flashing the latest BIOS. It worked for a while and boots off the SSD, then after a week or two suddenly the SSD is dropped from the boot path.
There weren't any minidump files, so I am attaching the text of the Windows MEMORY file, which I got using Windows WinDbg (X64).

I've recently built my new pc and it's been running fine for a week. Although recently it's been running incredibly slow. After looking around for what it might be I realised my Memory usage is 96% with nothing open.
I've looked through all the processes, there's nothing unusual everything is working fine. It's a hidden process taking up my 7.6gbs of 8gbs of Ram. I've looked around for solutions and nothings worked. Ran a simple avg virus check. Nothing.

I upgraded to Windows 10 from 8.1 and for some strange reason if i leave windows idle for no more than 10 minutes it decides to freeze hang. I had problem prior to this such as freezing/Hanging/blue screens after waking the PC from sleep, but now it happens during idle. I hope its not my CPU or Mobo. Everything else i should be able to replace easily in time.

First off my computer has always worked fine when going idle, the computer would go into sleep mode after an hour or hibernation mode which ever one, when the computer seems to be off when its not and power light blinks. About three days ago my computer started acting weird when i let it go idle instead of it cutting off after sitting the monitor will say no signal but the computer will still be running fans on and everything, if i click on the mouse or press buttons on keyboard nothing happens only thing i can do is cut off the computer or press the reset button on the case. I don't know why it started this all of a sudden but I don't like having to turn off and on by the power button when it does this.

It has been a few days that, everytime i go to sleep or afk, the time stops and I have to set it back when I'm back !
For instance, yesterday i left at 0:12am and today the time was stuck at 00:50 or something like that. So what I did is go to time settings to uncheck then check again the "set automatically" button.
I don't know what to do, I already tried to completely reset my pc but it didn't change anything to that problem ..
