How do I get File Explorer to open in the last used folder? NOT quick access, just in the normal list of directories. (file folders).. I hate 'quick access', it slows everything down so much and makes all other folders invisible - I just want the normal file list visible and file explorer to open in the same folder as I was using before, in that list. Is this at all possible?
View 9 RepliesQuite often (60% of the time) clicking on Windows Explorer results in no action whether from the tool bar or from the Windows screen for a very long period of time. There is nothing showing to determine if there is a background program causing Explorer to wait. When it eventually opens, more than one screen comes up because the impatient among us have clicked more than once (personal problem). I often start by going to Explorer for a file I was working on so this is a real pain.

What's worse, if I click the New Folder button under the File Explorer top menu, there is no response. In the end, I can only create new folders using command lines but not by the usual shortcuts.

View 1 RepliesIn File Explorer I right-click a folder and select Properties. In the Customise tab, under Choose a file to show on this folder icon, I select Choose file. I navigate to my Pictures folder and select an image and then click on Apply and OK. And nothing happens, the folder is unchanged and has no picture on it.

I have certain folders I must refer to frequently and I'd like to create a shortcut which would pop one open in a new window without having to wade through the whole drive's folder structure. This was normal on my last pc running XP but I can't seem to duplicate in Win10.
When I open Windows 10 File Explorer from the Task Bar and choose Home, Share or View, the resulting ribbon covers the top few lines of the opened folder or files. How can I cause the ribbon to "bump" down the folder so that I can see the top few lines?
View 2 RepliesI recently got a new gaming laptop and it's been working like a charm, especially since I upgraded it to 10. I am having a problem with my libraries however - this laptop essentially has 3 drives; the (C:) SSD for OS and a few games, and two other normal drives (D: E:) ... one for my games, the other for documents and such.
Due to this, whenever I am in the file explorer and need the quick access to get to say, music, it goes directly the the file on the C: drive rather than where my music folder is actually at, and how to actually change it. My save location was changed to this drive, as well as manually going into the libraries folder in %appdata% and changing the settings to my E: drive, but this hasn't changed anything. This is both under quick access (which can be changed with the pins I believe), but also the drop-down for This PC. Right-clicking these folders for properties does show the folders under C:User[Name], but no way to change.
I tried to move my Documents folder to another partition, but stupidly specified E: instead of E:Documents. I moved it back to the default location and fixed the Quick Access link but can't fix the folder link in "This PC".
The icon is E: instead of Documents, and it points to the E: folder.
How can I fix this? I assume I need the correct registry entries. I tried the tutorial to remove/restore the folder, but the hacks only hide or show the folder in "This PC". I don't want to remove/hide it anyway.
In Windows 7 I could specify the start folder for Explorer by entering its path in the Target field of the Properties/Shortcut. This is now not possible as this filed is now grey (= read only) and cannot be modified.
View 2 RepliesAbout a week after Clean Installing Windows 10 from an upgraded version on my laptop, I noticed that i wasn't able to Create a New Folder anywhere, from Desktop to File Explorer Directories. Nothing! Even when i try clicking the "New Folder" Button in the Ribbon or pressing Ctrl+Shift+N it still won't work. In the Context Menu (Right Click), I can't find the "New" Button too. Is this normal for Windows 10 after being installed? Do i have to install something (maybe an update) for the "New" to appear in the Context Menu?

View 2 RepliesI Just received my new desktop PC a few days ago with a clean windows 10 install. After just a 2-3 days im suddenly unable to open any folders/file explorer.
Yesterday I formatted and reinstalled windows. And after just 10-12 hours I can no longer open any folders, again.

As you can see the screen flashes briefly and then all the icons rearrange on the desktop.
Programs i have installed:
- Some Blizzard games
- Office 2010
- Dropbox
I always like to have my Windows positioned in a certain way on my desktop, and even though some programs remain, a lot don't (i.e. 'This PC' & 'Documents' folder) never stay in the same place. It's always random when opened. Not a major issue I know. But annoying all the same. Is there a fix or workaround?
View 3 RepliesRecently a change occured (after an update?). I have a folder containing only 6 shortcuts, linking to devices or to drives, connected to devices, in my home network. Opening this folder takes about 30 sec. It has to do with those shortcuts that link to drives, connected to devices, which are off.
Apparently, file explorer, when trying to present the shortcuts, also tries to get some info from those drives. After failing, file explorer nevertheless decides to present the shortcut after long waiting time. This effect has come recently in W10. In most cases, the effect is there, but in a few cases, the map is opening normally.
I'm used to working with quite a few libraries in W8.1 and would like file explorer in W10 to directly go to the libraries view if possible rather than the 'quick access' screen.
View 9 RepliesAbout a week ago Windows 10 started working in an abnormal manner on my PC: I wasn't able to open File Explorer or Control Panel, whether from the start menu or from basically any application that calls for those (file explorer or control panel).
I tried running command prompt (admin) sfc /scannow, DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth commands several times but that doesn't fix the problem at all. As a last resort I downloaded a brand new Windows 10 ISO file from the Microsoft site and performed a clean installation formatting my HDD. Things were OK the first minutes, but then the problem starts again with the each new installation of Windows. I don't know what is causing File Explorer and control panel to crash, maybe its a faulty driver or windows update itself. I have installed Windows 10 from that ISO file several times and every time after a few minutes of me doing nothing with the computer, it fails again.
The first driver I update to be able to use my monitor is the nVidia driver (361.43).
Weird issue with Acer CB280HK 4k Monitor
So, I was lucky enough to get a new monitor and new pc the other day; a dell xps 8700, and for purposes of this discussion, the video card set up is a intel hd graphics 4600 board, and a Nvidia GTX745, with 4 gigs of ram. The monitor is a 4k capable monitor, and to get the full res, its plugged in via a display port connector, into the intel board, since the nvidia card does NOT have a display port connector, only hdmi, which would limit the res to 1920x1080.
Problem is, ever since connecting it, for some crazy reason, I can NOT get my control panel to open, my file explorer to open, or adjust some of my desktop properties...EVERYTHING else works great, but those things no longer work..
Weird thing is, if I downres to 1920x1080, I can get the file explorer to work, but thats about it..
I ended up downloading MulitCommander Pro, which is an alternative file manager, and it works just fine. I am on windows version 10547, Home version..
All these things worked perfectly with my old monitor, connected via hdmi@1920x1080, so I dont think anything serious is wrong, but I cant figure out why these built in windows core items wont open up when the res is at 3840X2160.
Click on file generates an OPEN WITH window - eg an .xlsx file shows Excel as main option If I check 'always open with this app' & then OK - nothing happens
View 4 RepliesI don't know if it is a pure coincidence, but yesterday I tried to upload some photos from my Smartphone and this is what's happened! It is very frustrating and I have googled the problem umpteen times with various wording and tried a few of the suggestions (Windows main support page included) but the probem persists. I'm ready to either go down the very tedious route of a clean install of W7 (which I would loathe to do) or chucking my computer out the window which would be even worse!

I am not able to open the file explorer through the option on the start menu, or by clicking on the file explorer pinned to the task bar. When I click the pinned file explorer the window that pops up says "Windows cannot find ''. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I am able to navigate through to my files by going to the start menu file explorer's jump list (clicking the arrow to the right of the file explorer option on the start menu).
All of these issues began after I had been messing around with custom themes. I ran UltraUXThemePatcher_3.0.4 and then I changed the following files (themeui.dll,uxinit.dll, and uxtheme.dll). Next, I ran a registry editor file that made it so I can take ownership via right click. I also followed these steps in this article: [Windows 10 Tip] Remove Icons from Navigation Pane of This PC - AskVG up to the end of "Part 2: Remove Quick Access Icon From Navigation Pane of This PC". The last thing I did was install a custom icon pack.
New Skylake based build with Windows 10 Pro on a 250GB Samsung SSD. After initial startup I decided to format the drive to repartition it and did a clean install of Win10. Shortly after, the wireless connection to the router kept failing every few minutes and I would have to repair it. Then suddenly for no reason I could find I couldn't open the control panel. Clicking the taskbar icon would cause the screen to blink and all the taskbar icons would disappear and reappear. Decided to do a reset and that seemed to work until suddenly, again without warning or reason, I couldn't open the File Explorer and it did the same thing the Control Panel did and couldn't find a way to repair it.
Booted up from the Win10 install USB device and did another clean install of Win10. Got all of my programs reinstalled and running and all was well so I quickly did a system and partition backup with Todo. The wireless connection was working but suddenly I once again couldn't open the control panel. I had installed all Windows updates after doing the backups including the new version update but I don't know if there was anything in there that might have triggered the control panel issue. I booted up with the Todo emergency boot disc and did a partition restore. Everything is once again functional and I'm delaying running any Windows updates. Ran NOD32 virus scans and SFC /SCANNOW and neither found any problems or issues.
I'm just cruising along at the moment waiting for another incidence to occur. Is it possible I have a flaky SSD? Windows 10 seems to have a few issues with SSDs such as showing two instances of the same drive in File Explorer.
till yesterday everything was ok but today suddenly when I start windows File explorer open automatically without any command, I did restart system thrice but same was happening.
How do I remove this auto open of file explorer when I start windows.
Under the Network tab of File Explorer, I can see three entries, one of which is my router (with attached Hard Drive) and two computers, each running Windows 10. When I expand the router entry, I can see my hard drive files. I can also see my Users icons when I expand one of the computer's tabs. However, when I click on the other computer's name to search for users, all I see is a message that "This folder is empty". In fact, the folder is not empty, as there are two users on the computer. How I can get this computer to show users, etc.?
