Windows Search REFUSES To Index Anything On Particular Hard Drive
Sep 10, 2015I recently clean-installed Windows 10 after having some issues. I gave an expansion drive the letter A:, and after some investigation read that it was likely that assigning a drive letter A or B would preclude Windows from indexing anything on that drive (really, MS?).
So I reassigned it to D: and then G:, and Windows 10 still won't index ANYTHING on the drive. I've checked all permissions and properties to make sure they match those of other drives that Windows 10 successfully indexes. Especially, I made sure that the user "SYSTEM" had full control of the drive root and everything beneath. The only difference I see and cannot change is that the other drives are marked "ACTIVE" and presumably have a MBR from previous installations. My offending drive cannot be marked active, and I don't think this would affect indexing.
I've rebuilt the index, deleted the index, and rebooted, all many many times. I even copied a folder from the offending hard drive to another drive and Windows 10 spontaneously indexed the new files right away.
I'd rather not have to offload this large drive and reformat it.

Thing is, if I go to Indexing Options, it clearly says "Indexing complete." and there's no HDD activity (and it's had ages to rebuild the index)... and I rebuilt the index (~500,000 files).
The best workaround I've found is switching off Indexing (which reveals files in Google Drive folder, but now searching the whole computer takes forever)
Antivirus :: Windows Defender Scan Type Index
Jan 5, 2016I found out how to see the event logs for Windows Defender scans from a thread on eightforums ("Windows Defender - where are the Scan Results?"). I just ran a full scan, but Windows Defender apparently ran a quick scan afterwards, so there is no confirmation on the WD user interface that the full scan completed. So following the advice in that other thread, I looked at the WD log in the Event Viewer. I see in the Operational listing two events with Event ID 1000, which seems to correspond to a scan starting, and two with Event ID 1001, which corresponds to a scan finishing (see below). The two 1000 events and the two 1001 events differ from each other in the "Scan Type Index" visible in the Details view of each event, which is "1" for one pair of 1000 and 1001 and "2" for the other. The times are consistent with the 1000/1001 pair for Scan Type Index 2 being the full scan and the pair with Scan Type Index 1 being the subsequent quick scan. Am I correct that Scan Type Index 1 is a quick scan and Scan Type Index 2 is a full scan? Is there some place where the various event type codes, etc are described?

Customization :: Customize Taskbar Search And Folder Explorer (Default View)
Sep 7, 2015I have a large number of research articles on my laptop (via dropbox). One thing I loved about Windows 7 was that I could just hit the Start button, type a keyword into the search box and a results window would pop up that listed every matching document on my computer. I was also able to customize this so that it always came up in "Details" view.
I can't seem to get that same thing with Windows 10. When I type something into the search field on the task bar, I have to first select that I want it to search my stuff and not the web. After I do that it will only bring up a limited amount of results. I have to click again to see the whole set of hits--and then if I hit "Folder Explorer" at the bottom of the menu, it brings up the results in "Tile" view.
First, I can't figure out how to set the Folder Explorer default view to "Details".
Also, is there a way I search directly into Folder Explorer via the task bar search box?
Next, I don't mind that the taskbar offers me the option of websearch
Windows Start Search (We Are Getting Search Ready) Forever

Oct 20, 2015Win 10 Enterprise. Worked fine for a couple of days, but now I cannot seem to bring up the start menu and start typing anything. It will not search. I also tried in the search box or spyglass... I just click on it and nothing happens. It is a major inconvenience. I don't want to do a restore and keep my files, because there is a HUGE list of applications I will then need to restore. I also tried to click on Cortana, but clicking the app does nothing, doesn't even bring it up.
I tried re-indexing search items, I tried the search troubleshooter. I have rebooted, I have installed all updates. Someone on another forum said kill the Cortana task... well there isn't one running.
Settings Not Appearing When Search For Them In Search Bar
Aug 28, 2015I Just bought a new XPS 13 (lowest end model) that came with Microsoft 10 pre-installed (bought it from Microsoft store). my problem is that I cannot search for settings in the main search bar or even the settings search bar, the settings search bar simply doesn't work at all, and to double check that this wasn't a windows 10 issue I tried it out on a friend's Laptop and it worked fine. I took screenshots of both my Laptop and my friend's.

Move Documents Folder From Doctor Web Folder
Jan 13, 2016My 'documents' folder suddenly got moved into another folder named 'Doctor Web.' Looking into this, I find that Doctor Web is a piece of security software originating in Russia, apparently quite respectable, but it's not something I ever installed. According to its properties, the Doctor Web folder was created in 2014, but it wasn't on my computer two days ago when a backup I ran had no errors. Today, it choked on the new folder. I'm attaching a screen grab to illustrate the situation.
My question is, is there some method by which I can move the 'documents' folder from the 'Doctor Web' folder. put it back where it belongs and delete the 'Doctor Web' folder? I have access to all my documents, but I am not at all happy with them being spontaneously moved like this. Al
Double Click Folder Opens New Folder
Oct 2, 2015I have a fresh installation of Windows 10 Pro and for some reason when I double click a folder, it opens a new folder. Also the the folders that show in the left side pane, if I click on eg music, it opens a new folder. I have 2 drives and when I open a folder from each and cioy from ssd to secondary hdd, the hdd folder instantly closes. Jul 31, 2015I tried to take screenshots via the WinKey+PrtSc and the Fn+WinKey+PrtSc method. As expected, the screen briefly dimmed and then reestablished normal illumination as you would expect when taking a screenshot with previous Windows OS-es. (No functionality at all apparent via Ctrl+ WinKey+ PrtSc.) When I went to locate the screenshots in C:Users*****Pictures, there was no "Screenshots" folder. I tried searching for the folder and for the screenshots to no avail (though my search skills are rather novice, so I may have missed some obvious way to locate the missing folder). Screenshots will save to the clipboard through the two operable methods above and can be pasted to Paint. I tried visually searching numerous folders and hidden folders for the screenshots, to no avail.
So, I looked in the registry and found:

The ScreenshotIndex DWORD value is "3".In Win8, from what I have found trying to understand and solve this issue, you would also find an expandable string at this location: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUserShellFolders.It required value data which pointed to the pictures folder (%USERPROFILE%PicturesScreenshots).There was no such expandable string value present in my User Shell Folders location. I never had this problem in Windows 8/8.1 and I realize things may be done very differently in Windows 10, so I didn't add the expandable string that the tutorial I was reading referenced in order to to fix this problem in Windows 8.
When Boot Up PC Cannot Search In Search Bar
Oct 10, 2015Sometimes when I boot my PC I cannot search in the Search Bar, I have to restart the system then it usually works fine again until the next reboot.I have decided to rebuild the index to just the things I use regularly (I know how to navigate through the system so I don't usually need to search for much, it's purely ease).
These are the things which have been excluded: $SysReset; AMD; Fraps; history; inetpub; Intel; MSOCache; NPE; Perflogs; Program Files (x64); Program Files; ProgramData; Appdata; Appdata; WindowsIt has currently (after 1 hour) indexed 4,000 items. Do any of these things need to be indexed, Program Files for example? If they do not need to be then I probably will exclude them.
No Search Everywhere Box?

Can't Connect To Web Search
Oct 23, 2015Computer: HP Elite 8000 C2D E8400 Win 10 64 Bit 4GB RAM .Windows 10 upgrade from Win7 installed. Have installed Office 10 and Chrome. Microsoft edge default browser.
Problem: When I click the "Search the web and Windows " box I get "We can't connect to web search right now but you can still search your stuff. Make sure you are currently connected to the internet."
I am connected to the internet and if I type a "web question" into the box it opens Edge and give me the answer. Edge stopped working so I reset it with "Reset_Microsoft_Edge" from this forum, now it is working again, but I have this new problem.

Aug 20, 2015I'm not tech savvy nor do I pretend to understand much of the content in this forum; however, I'm trying really hard to like Windows 10 (Edge) and think I'm missing something. I came from Win7 and have spent the last three days using Windows 10. I do a lot of research and loved the fact I could highlight a word or phrase, RC on search "Google" and have instant results. In addition, if I wanted to save something to the desktop....RC and save to desktop...very simple. Am I correct in thinking I now need several convoluted steps to get the same things done if I can do them at all? I know I can use a different search engine and get the job done but Edge is reputed to be faster.

Cannot Type In Search Box Now
Aug 8, 2015I have updated to Windows 10 and all went well. Looks great.
However, since yesterday, I have not been able to type in the search bar. One clicks the mag glass or search box but nothing happens.
I tried, such as:
SFC/scannow
Windows powershell key "Get -AppXPacjkage -Allusers......."
DSIM /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth......"
Checked for any more Windows updates
None of this worked.
I then created a new user to find that it works with a new profile. It seems we are at the mercy of a user profile that could become corrupt at any moment and the only solution is to create another user.
Search Isn't Working?
Jan 11, 2016I'm talking about pressing <Windows> and typing in a shortcut name that lives in C:Users<name>AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms.
Simply put, it doesn't find the shortcut. And I don't feel like rebuilding the entire index, since I doubt it will solve the problem. This was broken on 7, 8.1, and now 10. You'd think they could index a particular set of files from a particular folder.
