Aug 5, 2015I have been told that it would be a good idea to "backup" my files before I upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. How can I go about doing this?

Aug 17, 2015I recently and I might say reluctantly, upgraded to Windows 10. The upgrade went fine, however I'm not able to create a backup of the system image or folder files. I have a 320 GB WD Blue drive for the backup. There was always more than enough space to do this under Windows 7. After failing a number of times I deleted the drive completely and re formatted it. I now have no backup.

Aug 17, 2015I am a noob when it comes to backup and restore. After many years and many iterations of Windows, I finally tried to backup my files and folders. They have been stored to an external HDD.
I ran into an issue with Win 10 that required a complete clean install of 7 and then upgrade to 10 again. The drive was completely cleaned.
Upon install, I can only see the backup I created after the new install.
From the backup drive, I can see many files when clicking on the drive to view content. The laptop has been renamed. How then can I restore the files from the old setup?

Apr 6, 2016My daughter backed up her computer on an external drive. I would like to extract some picture files that she saved on her computer for me several weeks ago, but I do not want the backup file to open up on my own computer. Her computer is being shipped in for repairs.
Is there a way that I can access the files without actually opening up that whole backup file? When I click on the image, it does not give me an option to "view files and folders".

Feb 23, 2016I have two backup tasks that appear in the "scheduled backups" tab, and they run on schedule, but they don't appear in the "backup definition files" tab.
This happened due to an uninstall and reinstall.
How can I get them back into the "backup definition files" tab?
I still have the reflect folder in my documents, with the xml files that define the backup tasks. But for some reason, that isn't enough to get those tasks to appear in the scheduled backups tab.
Another minor issue: when I boot from the MR recovery partition, in order to run a restore, it doesn't know where to look for my backup files. I have to add the folder manually, and then it forgets again the next time.

Oct 9, 2015I have been trying to setup a scheduled backup (Windows 7 Backup and restore) on Windows 10. I want to include a system image of the C: drive as part of the back up and save it to the D: drive. However Windows wont let me save the image on the D: drive, I think because I moved the location of my user files to the D: drive to save space on my SSD.
Any way to override or workaround this without having to move my files back to the C: drive?
File History Does Not Backup Desktop Or Files On Desktop?
Aug 30, 2015Some files get backed up by File History but not Desktop or files on Desktop. I have excluded Videos, Documents, Music and Pictures as I do not want these backed up with File History.
I have turned off File History and turned it back on again, reselected the backup drive F: and selected the only folder in File History...
However, Desktop is in my user profile...
What have I done incorrectly or not done correctly?

Sep 8, 2015After upgrading win 7 to win 10 I can't open downloaded .exe files. I keep getting errors (The extended attributes are inconsistent.) When I try to run system file checker that errors out also. This is the second time I reinstalled windows 10 hoping it would of fixed the problem but it didn't.

Will upgrading make two windows.old folders or replace the old one with a new one? And will that one have another windows.old folder inside of it? Should I just throw my windows.old file onto my external hdd and then do the upgrade?

Today I was fiddling around and customizing it, when I noticed that all of my files that were previously saved on my C: Drive were now on my D: drive, like my Program Files and, well, basically everything I ever downloaded.
Should I be worried? I've heard that things like Program files are MEANT to be on the C: Drive, whereas the D: drive is meant for windows files...

Nov 23, 2015I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10 over 4 days ago. After windows 10 was up, all the folders/files in my desktop were moved somewhere. I did a file search and moved them back to the desktop. I was on a general user admin account. Shortly after, I logged into my outlook account on windows 10. Could still see all the files/folders on my desktop.
But when I rebooted my pc for 1st time after upgrading to windows 10, all the desktop files/folders disappeared. File search could only find the icon links in ..../Recent folder. No physical files/folders exist for those icon links. Online MS techs had tried to look into my pc remotely but they could not find anything. One online tech suggested Office 365 could recover them since the files may be saved in Office app, but I used Office to search for the files with no success.
All other personal files/folders not saved on desktop are still OK. All was lost for the files/folders on desktop?
Installation :: Upgrade From 8.1 Fails At Copying Files (23%)
Jul 30, 2015I tried updating my Win8.1 to Win10 twice.
The first time, it hung at 26% total, 89% copying files. Then it bricked my system completely so I made a clean install of Windows 8.1. There was nothing else installed than Windows & Updates.
Tried to update it with a stick made by the Media Creation Tool --> Stuck at 23%, 77% copying files.
I tried everything: Disabled Network Adapter, pulled all Cables (only mouse left) out, I also detached my second HDD.
I am trying to install Win10 on my SSD (Samsung 830 Pro, 130GB). I am running a Z77 Chipset.
I'd love to install completely new with the Image but that doesn't work because of the activation later on..
I'm stuck with a fresh Windows 8.1 install now, that's not really what I wanted. I'd love to update to 10 since I had it as a Insider too.
Missing Files On C Drive - Cannot Locate After Upgrade
Sep 20, 2015I just upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1. I can see all my files must still be on my harddrive as my harddrive hasn't gained any extra space. However, when I go to the C:drive Windows.old I cannot locate my old files. I had a massive collection of music and video and want them all back. Am I missing something or looking in the wrong place? Inside Windows.old I have the following files Perflogs, Program Files, Program files (x86), Recovery, Users, WINDOWS. There is a file NTUSER.DAT.gu in the Windows.old-Users-Guest could all my files be in there?

Nov 29, 2015This is in regards to files disappearing and my desktop changing. I downloaded and installed Windows 10 last night but did not do any modifications until this morning. When I started my computer today, I couldn't find my files. I found them in my user profile. So I moved them to the desktop in a new folder. Also, the desktop was not my previous desktop in regards to shortcuts. Which was fine because I added them back.
I then changed the desktop theme to the flower theme. I then went to restart and selected Update and Restart. When the computer rebooted, my desktop them was gone, and now my old shortcuts from 8.1 were on there. AND the file folder I created with all my files is gone.
I have looked in the windows old folder, the new one, did a file search, what happened? I do not have more than one desktop in the virtual desktops.
Should I recover back to 8.1 to get my files or how do I find them? They can't be deleted but somehow hidden on that other desktop.
