Jan 22, 2016The firm in which I work has a Lenovo PC with Windows 10 installed. There are two user profiles on the computer, the admin and another normal account without administration rights. We have only the password of the account without administrator rights.
The network administrator had left the company surprisingly in without giving the administrator password of the PC and we cannot contact him anymore.
Now we want to install another programme and we cannot do this without an administrator account.
I disabled secure boot and have tried to boot the PC with an Linux USB Stick, but it do not boot from the stick.
how I either can reset the password of the administrator account or create an new account with administrator rights.

Feb 23, 2016Basically, when I setup my system I run my primary user as an admin to install and set everything the way I like it. After a week or so I remove my primary user from the Administrators group. I then use the default Admin account (usually Administrator) to do any other major changes or installs.
I understand that he default administrator account is disabled by Windows and needs to be enabled, but my gripe is that windows has allowed my only active user, which happen to be in the local admin group, to remove it's own Administrative privilege.
Now I have a PC with one standard user and no way to enable my admin, or otherwise do any administrative actions.
HOW CAN I ENABLE ADMIN WHEN MY ONLY USER ISN'T AN ADMIN?
WHY WOULD WINDOWS ALLOW THIS TO OCCUR?
I've attached a couple screen shots showing my list of users, which will show the only active user and the other 3 disabled (icon shows down arrow); as well as my Administrator group showing the disabled Administrator user...which is disabled.
And I know I *should* have enabled the Administrator account BEFORE I removed my own admin...but I'm here now and need a fix.

Jul 30, 2015I just upgraded my Win 7 Laptop to Win 10, but I seem to have lost my admin rights to certain folders and actions.
I am getting "You don't have permission to save in this location" messages when trying to look at the Local Users and Groups console or save files.I can not download/ save (do not get the save dialog at the bottom of Edge (or IE for that matter)).Also I am not able to do the "Sign in with a Microsoft account instead" procedure in the "Your account" window. Nothing happens when I fill in my email and click.
I want my control back, of the Laptop. How do I solve this?

Oct 4, 2015My brother has lost all admin privileges and would like to get them back, how this happened he was doing a virus scan and it was taking an excessive amount of time and he wanted to stop it but it would not stop so he just turned off his computer when he restarted it booted in what he says was OTS mode with no admin rights. Is there a way he can recover admin rights?

Sep 27, 2015I am running a multiboot W7-pro and W10-pro with several harddisks build in the computer to discover that after W10 used a disk W7 wants to check it to find no errors. Beside that I am not allowed to delete some folders I created in W7 after using them in W10 and they are set to free for use for everybody.
W7 now askes me to get permission from that everybody. I think they mean the W10-everybody. Understand that security is important nowadays but this is becoming a disaster! Also discovered that running the backupapplication Cobian (that always did a perfect job in W7) now is not allowd to acces lots of files in W7 anymore after W10 did ?????something??????.
Another example: I have two SATA backup 1 Tb Disks I switch every few weeks. W10 refused to see the new one after the first switch. Had to go deep into settings to carefully trying to open its content again as W10 told me zero bytes were used. In the end the 900 Gb data was there again but I have forgotten all the steps needed to fix it.
My best guess is that beside Microsoft is messing around with accounts and rights to get full control of your computer. They do not want you to be in control yourself anymore and you have to (must) only use W10 in the future. I am starting to feel a big fool that upgraded to W10 as I am loosing control over my PC's and home-network day by day!!!!

Sep 30, 2015I didn't encounter this problem until subscribing to a new outlook email alias. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. I have one account to log into on bootup, when my computer goes to sleep and I attempt to log back in there is an option to switch user. I only have the one admin acct listed under users. Not sure as to what would be causing this problem. When I switch user it only shows the same windows live login name I use when I initially turn it on.

Jan 13, 2016I decided to give new Windows 10 (it picked Home Edition by itself) a try. Previous version was Windows 7. After a flawless install I have seen that something on my C: partition is using a lot of disk space. It was Windows.old file which I have successfully deleted by using Disk Cleanup. But last night I see Windows.old has reappeared back, which is quite a surprise, so I wanted to delete it again.
But now UAC blocks my every effort because User Account "doesn't have Administrator permission". The Yes button in the UAC is greyed out, I can only click No which leaves me where I was. The Account is reduced to what appears to be Guest. Naturally, I ended up more or less completely cut off from making any serious alteration to anything. I can't delete folders of importance, change account status (back to Admin), nothing.I can only use the computer.Another issue is that my otherwise empty D: partition has 3 files (one of them is named "WindowsImageBackup"), they together take more than 100G of hard disk space. As a Guest it's impossible to open or access them to see what's in them, let alone delete them.
I know that Win 10 is supposed to delete Windows.old by itself after 30 days (I hope "WindowsImageBackup" too), but is there any way for me to solve the issue of account status - to return to Admin - and do it by myself alone as soon as possible? It all seems like some bug or something, it's quite frustrating and I tried to do a Repair Install, but as a Guest you're pretty much stuck.
Login Screen Comes Up And Only User Account (admin) Listed - No Option To Enter Password
Apr 3, 2015I just upgraded a new laptop to Windows 10 with the latest build. Everything was great until I rebooted after uninstalling some bloatware and now I can't get back into Windows. The login screen comes up and the only user account (admin) is listed, but there is no where to enter the password. This has be baffled.
I've been trying to get into safe mode, but the HP Envy 15 that I'm using doesn't seem to want to let me do that.

I used Control Panel to go to Users, but there seemed to be no way to change the name back to the original. It's the only account on the computer. Surely changing the name is possible, but how? Will I have to create a new administrator account and delete the old one?

Should Change User Accounts To Desktops?
Nov 8, 2015Possibly in Windows XP when it was installed, in order to have several desktops, dealing with various subjects, I simply created a whole bunch of User Accounts. So, I changed user accounts to get to the desktop I wanted.
Now that I have Windows10, is there an advantage to using the New Desktop feature? I'd just have one user account then.
I'm using Fences to sort my desktops.
Also, my data, which shows up in my desktops is stored on a separate partition from C drive.

Nov 15, 2015my issue is that I set up my Microsoft account on my Win10 laptop back when Win10 first released. At the time it was associated with an older email account that I have since changed to a new gmail account. I was able to go into my Microsoft account settings online and set the new email as an alias, as well as the primary for the account. My desktop (the system I am typing this on) is on this account with the new gmail address attached to the user account (as a Microsoft account).
My laptop, however, still shows my old email as the account name. I contacted Microsoft directly and they connected to my laptop through a remote connection to try and fix it, but they were unable to figure out how to change the account name.
I have since performed an in-place upgrade to refresh the Win10 install, which prompted for my Microsoft account credentials. I was able to connect successfully, but the account name is still stuck on my old email address. Under User settings in the control panel, there is no option to simply change account name like the local accounts do, and the OS is the home edition, so I have no access to the group policy editor settings. I have seen a few references to registry edits, but I'd rather avoid messing with that because I realize changing the account name might mess up directory addresses (since the 'user' directory is linked to account name).

Dec 9, 2015Since the latest major Windows 10 update (fall 2015), Internet Explorer has been refusing to log me into SSL-protected (https:) websites without me having to alter the recorded user name.
Windows changes my user name to MicrosoftAccountmy.email@address.com, even though the original user name was a short plaintext one. Windows does remember the correct password, so all I have to do is change the user name back to the correct one.I log into the site, however, the user name is back to the MicrosoftAccount one.

Open Control Panel. Open User Accounts applet. On the left there's a link that says Change my environment variables.
Clicking on that link... does nothing (!!!). The link is simply dead.
What on Earth is going on??? How are we supposed to change environment variables in non-Administrator accounts now? This Change my environment variables link in User Accounts was provided specifically for that purpose. There's no other natural way to do it.
I know that there are workarounds for this (all ugly), but... WTH? Did they do even basic testing on this 1511 release???
P.S. Just confirmed that pre-1511 Windows 10 works normally in that regard. This damage was done specifically by 1511 update.

I'm running three drives and one of them has two partitions so that brings it up to four mapped drives... I'm always moving stuff around,downloading, adding plug-ins to my software and so on...
Below are the settings I have set to keep the prompt from popping up but as I said it shows up on occasion...

Windows Smart Screen is turned "OFF"
Security Options ... Accounts: Administrator account status "Enabled"
All the drives have full control "Enabled"
